• Can DVI look different?

  I have a desktop with an nVidia GT 9500 which has two DVI slots. I have a 24" TN-Panel TFT on that and it looks pretty good. Then I hooked it onto the DisplayPort of my ThinkPad with the Intel HD 3000 card with an DP-DVI adapter and I think that the fonts look even clearer. Both computers run Kubuntu 12.04, although the ThinkPad is freshly set up, while the desktop is migrated from the previous release. Is this a hardware thing or is it just some setting in the anti-aliasing or sub-pixel-hinting?

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • If I double my ram on a x86 processor, does that double the ram I can use for each individual process?

  I don't understand how 32-Bit OS's use RAM on a per process basis. I've read the max RAM my x86 processor running a 32-bit OS can use is 2^32 = 4gb; but that's just for one process, right? 3DS Max keeps crashing, but it typically can never use more than 2GB of RAM before it crashes, if I increase my RAM from 4-8GB, would that double how much RAM I can use for each individual process or actually cause no change in my performance? Also would increasing my VRAM and getting a better graphics card increase the extent to which individual programs can preform? Lastly, is there any way to upgrade a 86-bit processor to be able to run a 64-bit OS? I feel like it would be ridiculous to sell modern processors that are capped at 4GB of RAM? Thanks.   My datacenter says that each rack has primary and backup power on each rack. I assume this means there is a UPS for each server. Therefore, do I have any need of getting a BBU for the following setup? Intel Cherry 520 SSD x 4 RAID 10 LSI-9260 with WRITEBACK CACHE ENABLED I have heard that without a BBU the data in the cache could be lost. Since my needs aren't mission-critical, I can afford to lose some data. But would the rest of the data on the HD be corrupted?

I want to ask, if I buy motherboard which is compatible with i7 processor (any) and compatible with graphic card Nvidia gtx 780, does it mean that this mother board will be compatible with processors (from intel) which will be released next year? Same for graphic cards? The point is that I'd like to avoid situation where I buy motherboard let's say now, and in couple of months there will be new graphic card/processor which will not be compatible with my mother board?   I am sick of the driver issues of Linux. So I am planning to switch to Windows 7 as a host and virtualize my Linux into it. My laptop has integrated Intel graphics and supports VT-d. For speed reasons I would like to assign that card to Linux. Now, Parallels could do it but this page says Note: If you have only one PCIe video adapter, its name will be grayed out in the PCI Devices list and you will not be able to allocate it to your virtual machines. I would be perfectly fine with a headless Windows 7 (I can remotely admin from other computers or just the Linux guest) -- is there any VM software that doesn't have this restriction?

• Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

  I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.

• Virtualbox, slow upload speed using nat

  Im running Virtualbox on a Ubuntu 12.04 server (host) and I'm running a Windows 7 as guest os. Im using the (virtual) Intel PRO/1000 MT network card. I get good network performance for download using both nat and bridged network settings but upload speed is really slow using nat. I have tied this on tow different servers, one brand new, and one a several years old, both gave the same result. If you can explain this behavior or have ideas of further test I can perform please let me know.

• Poor TCP loopback throughput on Windows

  I measured the throughput of a locally bound TCP socket connection on my computer (Intel Q9550, 64 GB RAM, Windows XP 64 bit) using iperf. I got dissatisfying results (around 1.6 Gbit/s) each time, no matter how I tweaked the TCP settings (buffer length, window size, max segment size, no delay). I got similar results when I tried netperf. Now, I understand (from sources like these) that the average throughput of a loopback connection should be around 5 Gbit/s. What could be the reasons for such poor performance?

• Recommendations for SSD for server and database use?

  SSDs are a new technology and they are constantly improving. A lot of the posts here were posted in 2009 when SSDs where less mature and not as fast. What was recommend back then is probably out of date today because of better options. The SSD is used to hold SQL Server databases. Size is probably 128G. The database is used with a CMS and web server so web pages need to get their data and render as fast as possible. Which modern SSD is recommended for such a use? Is there an SSD better than Intel X-25 E/M in terms of performance/cost? (I am also evaluating cost between : RAM + UPS (semi persistent) vs SSD for same amount of gigabytes. No RAID is involved)

  TrueCrypt - "Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0" error message on boot. When i start my laptop (Acer TravelMate 2410). after the starting memory check, the screen goes full black, and a message appears for about 3 seconds: Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0 and after that, disappears, and next message comes out: Operating System Not Found and all stops here. Windows Xp was installed on it, before this came. TrueCrypt cd (witch was made during the process of full encryption) is not working, not in restoring MBR, no even in decrypting my drive - completely useless. Note: I detected some short of boot sector errors (i dont know the amount) on my drive before this happened. Please, i would greatfully thank every comment, or suggestion, because my computer is unusable now. The HDD is a Samsung HDD, 160Gb. Other preferences: Acer TravelMate 2410 Notebook, 2 Gb RAM, 1500 Mhz Intel Celeron M processor. Regards

  linux lubuntu HD4000 intel ivy-bridge 8gb 1600 ram. I am getting a duplicate entry error message from synaptic package manager and it says the problem is there. I am wondering a few things: What this directory is. Whether it safe to simply delete the offending duplicates from there. Whether this is a useful new discovery... Is this where all the packages I have no use for end up and something I can edit to suit my fancy in the long run? It would be nice to be able to reduce the clutter in my package manager. Especially find a way to get rid of all the 32 bit stuff or older versions of programs I have downloaded manually elsewhere. I had meant to post this in linux! So if this is wrong place let me know and I will move it there!

• Dual 9500GT video cards, one works

  I have two video cards, both are PCIe 512MB Nvidia 9500GTs. One is an Evga and the other is another brand. If I put them both in, the one in the top slot will work (either card). The one in the lower slot says Code 12, not enough resources to use this device. I've tried disabling Firewire and a few other things in an attempt to get more "resources". Intel DP45SG motherboard. 4G Ram. 64bit Vista. Q8200 CPU. I do not have the SLI connector.

  My motherboard is Intel D865GVHZ I m using 512 mb ram and recently i purchased a 512 mb ram of same company same speed(333) and same manufacturer. but my pc is not booting in dual dynamic paging mode . It is not at all booting and the screen freezes on windows logo screen at start up. i checked installing individual rams one by one and the pc is working with either of the ram installed individually. But wen i install both the pc is not working. One more point i found is my one ram has 8 chips on both sides while the other ram has 4 chips on both sides.   I'd like to install Gentoo Linux on my Macbook Pro by keeping my current OS X installation. I currently have OS X installed on a RAID 0 on two 160GB Intel SSDs and I'd like to create a new partition for Gentoo alongside OS X without losing the RAID setup but, from what I read on the net, Apple's software RAID is poorly (read "not at all") supported: BootCamp refuses to create a windows partition on a RAID volume rEFIt is not able to boot an OS from a software RAID even Apple's recovery partition for Lion can't be created on a RAID volume Is there a way to dual boot my Macbook while keeping the RAID solution?

• Occasional HDD Related Hangs

  I have an issue that seems to be disk related. Occasionally my system will block for 30 or so seconds and is mostly unresponsive. Those things already in memory requiring no disk access continue to function but those things requiring disk access (even small) hang. 30 seconds later everything is back to normal. I have 2 Samsung drives in RAID 0. I have 1 WD drive (has pagefile) I have an SSD used for caching (Intel Smart Response). This is a new install of Windows and the drives were fine in my old PC (~1 month ago). Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any suggestions to solve this one? Thanks in advance.

  for best laptop for programming after reading here looks like its Mac vs Lenovo (tablet, because tablet is only why I would choose it over Mac). I do crave that tablet but low speed processor scares me. Intel Core i5 or i7 in Sony Vaio sounds more attractive (2,26 - 3GHz for lower price). Yes, Lenovo can be fast, like x201, but with good specifications its over $2,000 its a little too much. For a lot of development I just don't want to wait every time while program compiles and builds during debugging. I want it fairly fast and smooth. Can anyone advice their experience with Lenovo's tablets?

  I'm going to be upgrading my Dell Inspiron 530 (2.0 Ghz Intel Dual Core CPU, 3 GB RAM) to windows 7 soon, and rather than backup and reformat my existing drive, I'm planning on getting a 2nd drive to replace my current primary, and moving it to a secondary. Thus, this seems like an excellent time to get a solid-state drive, if its going to be worth it. As far as I can tell this machine has a SATA-I controller, and I'm unsure if I'll see a noticeable performance increase with an SSD without going to SATA-II. So I have a three part question here given all that: Will spending the money on a SSD be worth it if hook it into a SATA-I controller? Is it reasonable to upgrade the controller on this machine to a SATA-II controller? Given that this PC is kind of old to begin with, am I better off performance wise to just stick with a faster HDD?

  I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?
