  • Unattended Install of Zend Server license

    I have a Zend Server 5.6 development license and I wanted to know if there is a way to apply the license during install, rather than via the web interface after it has installed. I ask because I administer our server environment via Rightscale and have automated the creation of the server, however it still requires manual input for the license details. We regularly fire up a staging server to do final tests before pushing to production and it would be great if it were completely hands off.

  • Need to reformat SQL Cluster Disk. How do I recover my SQL installation?

    We need to reformat the SQL cluster disk in our SQL cluster. The drive contains the shared installation files for SQL as well as databases. My concern is how SQL/The Cluster will react to after we wipe the disk resource. Questions: Is there a defined procedure for this? How should we backup and restore the disk? Queries may be run on either of the two servers because they are both production sites, so the replication can't just work one way. It doesn't have to be in real-time, just fairly accurate so people don't notice a difference when they get switched to a different server.

  • Slash after domain in URL missing for Rails site

    After redirecting users in a Rails app, for some reason the slash after the domain is missing. Generated URLs are invalid and I'm forced to manually correct them. The problem only occurs on a subdomain. On a different primary domain (same server), everything works ok. For example, after logging out, the site is directing to https://www.sub.domain.comlogin/ rather than https://www.sub.domain.com/login I suspect the issue has something to do with the vhost setup, but I'm not sure.   • Debian or CentOS?

    I am looking at using either Debian or CentOS for a production server and I've heard mixed reviews of each one. I've heard CentOS performs better under load, however I am aware that Debian has a much larger package repository. Personally, I am partial to Debian since I am less familiar with Red Hat distros, but wanted to reach out on Server Fault to see which I really should be using. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • How to tune system settings for mongoDB on Linux?

    Trying to squeeze a lot out of one question here -- please bear with me. Although the MongoDB man pages make several useful recommendations about system settings like ulimit (http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/reference/ulimit/), and other production factors (http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/administration/production-notes/) they seem mysteriously silent on things like virtual memory and swap settings. The closest we get to a hint is that "...the operating system’s virtual memory subsystem manages MongoDB’s memory..." (http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/faq/fundamentals/#does-mongodb-require-a-lot-of-ram). Running the same job - high writes and high reads on about 10,000,000 records in a single collection -- on my 4-processor, 4GB RAM macbook and an 8-core ubuntu box with 64GB RAM I saw dramatically WORSE read performance on the linux box with factory settings, and could hear the disk constantly spinning, indicating high I/O and presumably swapping. Yes, other things were happening on the box, but there was plenty of free RAM, disk space, etc.; furthermore, I did not see evidence that Mongo was expanding to take advantage of all that free RAM as it is touted to do. Linux box default settings were as follows: vm.swappiness =60 vm.dirty_background_ratio = 10 vm.dirty_ratio = 20 vm.dirty_expire_centisecs =3000 vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs=500 I hazarded some guesses looking at docs and blogs for other types of databases (Oracle, MYSQL, etc.), experimented, and adjusted as below. vm.swappiness=10 vm.dirty_background_ratio=5 vm.dirty_ratio=5 vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs=250 vm.dirty_expire_centisecs=500 I saw some immediate apparent improvements in read time. However, when I ran my test jobs again, read performance continued to be painfully sluggish during heavy writes. Then, I REBUILT the collection from an available data source - and suddenly I can read at 1ms or less per record WHILE doing the write job! So the question is really two-fold: 1) What are appropriate VM settings for MongoDB on Linux? 2) (bonus) Does Mongo do some checking or optimization with the OS while data is being built? In other words, if I have built a large data set with suboptimal VM or I/O settings, does Mongo make assumptions during the memory-mapping process that will fail to take advantage of optimizations down the road? Obviously I don't fully grok memory mapping under the hood (I was hoping I wouldn't have to). Any help appreciated...thanks! -j

  • Get Remote Processes on Windows 2003 with cpu percentage

    I have a production server with it's cpu's running excessively high. Except in critical circumstances nobody is allowed to logon to servers during non maintenance times. I am looking for an application I can use to look at the processes on the remote server which include CPU % usage. An application like top. Windows native tasklist.exe doesn't show percentage, nor does sysinternals pslist.exe. Suggestions?

  • Event log message size 31885? Windows 2008

    We recently upgraded our production boxes to Windows 2008 from Windows 2003 servers. Everything works fine except the event logging. We log at max 32000 bytes of data for each message On 2008 servers, event logging fails if number of characters is greater than 31885. Is this new limit on Windows 2008 R2 servers? Any help appreciated. On Win 2003 servers, I am able to log 32000 bytes of data for each log entry.

  • Two DHCP Servers, Block Clients for one of them?

    I am building out a kickstart network that resides on a different VLAN uses its own DHCP server. For some reason, my kickstart clients kept getting assign IPs from my primary DHCP server. The way I have it set up is that I have a primary DHCP server on this router here: 192.168.15.1 Connected to that DHCP server is a switch with the IP of 192.168.15.2. My kickstart (Scientific Linux) server is connected to that switch on two ports: Port 2 - where the kickstart server communicates to the rest of the production network via eth0. The IP assigned to the server on that interface is 192.168.15.100 (on eth0). The details are: Interface: eth0 IP: 192.168.15.100 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.15.1 Port 7 - has it's own VLAN ID (along with port 8). The kickstart server is connected to that port with the IP of 172.16.15.100 (on eth1). Again, the details are: Interface: eth1 IP: 172.16.15.100 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: none The kickstart server runs its own DHCP server and assigns them over the eth1. Most of the kick starts are built over the kickstart VLAN through port 8. To prevent the kickstart DHCP server from assigning addresses over the production network, I have the route setup like so: route add -host 255.255.255.255 dev eth1 At this point, the clients kept getting assign IPs from the 192.168.15.1 DHCP server. I need to figure out a way to block client requests from reaching that DHCP. Its should be noted that but I also build KVM hosts on the kickstart server as well, so I need those KVMs to have the ability to get DHCP requests from the 192.168.15.1 DHCP server via the bridge network once I finish resolved this particular problem. (Currently, they communicate via NAT). So what would be done to resolve this? Through iptables or some sort of routing I need to put in?   • What is the best way to make a test duplicate of an AD DC?

I would like to make a duplicate of this machine with all setting the same, except the domain would be a slight variation of the current domain (think winnet to winnet2). Would it be easiest to try to clone the hard drive while the machine is running and change the domain on the clone in a different machine or export the data and import it on a different box?

    How do I edit an already-in-production .cmd script file, in order to have the script delete a certain registry key in the Windows registry? Firstly, is this even possible, and secondly (if that's not possible), could I create a .reg file and execute that file from with the .cmd file?
