• Running an old version of some software

  I don't want to mingle in any backstory, but all that needs to be known is that I have a computer with Ubuntu on it and I am trying to install Windows 8 from an ISO. I am using the guide that can be found here which is a little more than four years old. Now, I've been able to accomplish everything up to Step 2, at which point I am stuck. I have downloaded the file found on that page, which can be found here, and have attempted to use it, as directed, quote; "right click the downloaded Unetbootin file, select Properties and on the "Permissions" tab, check the "Allow executing file as program" box. Then simply double click it and it should open." But, after having set checked the specified box and double clicking the file, nothing happens. Nothing is launched and nothing changes. I've been stuck here for several hours now, having failed to find a solution via Google.

• Where is a good spot to start when writing a LWJGL game engine?

  I'm starting work on a huge game and somewhere along my train of thought I decided it would be a good idea to write my own engine for the game. I was originally going to use JMonkeyEngine but there were some things about it that just didn't work well with me. I wanted full control over every aspect of the entire process. Where would a good place to start be when writing your own engine? I have no experience with LWJGL but I learn quick. Either advice or some place where there is good advice would be nice. Thanks!

• KnockoutJS 2.3.0 - Uncaught Error: You cannot apply bindings multiple times to the same element.

I had some dynamically added DOM elements and re-applying bindings worked before. It always seemed like a workaround/hack, but now Knockout is telling me that I shouldn’t do it. The quick way to fix this is to use ko.cleanNode($(‘#id’) and this works. A different/possibly better way, as suggested by x0n might be to use templates and Knockout’s template binding (<script type=’text/html’>…</script>).   Thanks again to the StackOverflow community for quickly providing me with the solution. • I want a trivial example of where MongoDB can scale but a relational database will have trouble

  I'm just learning to use MongoDB, and when discussing with other programmers would like a quick example of why NoSQL can be a good choice compared to a traditional RDBMS - however the scenarios I come up with and can find online seem pretty contrived. E.g. a blog with lots of traffic could be represented relationally, but will require some performance tuning and joins across tables (assuming full denormalization is being used). Whereas MongoDB would allow direct retrieval from one collection to the same effect. But the response I'm getting from other programmers is "why not just keep it relational and then add some trivial caching later?" Does anybody have a less contrived example where MongoDB will really shine and a relational db will fall over much quicker? The smaller the project/system the better, because it leaves less room for disagreement. Something along the lines of the complexity of the blog example would be really useful. Thanks.

• Is there a good way to get pixel-perfect collision detection in XNA?

  Is there a well-known way (or perhaps reusable bit of code) for pixel-perfect collision detection in XNA? I assume this would also use polygons (boxes/triangles/circles) for a first-pass, quick-test for collisions, and if that test indicated a collision, it would then search for a per-pixel collision. This can be complicated, because we have to account for scale, rotation, and transparency. WARNING: If you're using the sample code from the link from the answer below, be aware that the scaling of the matrix is commented out for good reason. You don't need to uncomment it out to get scaling to work.

• Best way to prevent UIPanGestureRecognizer from firing when moving sprites in cocos2d

  Im using UIPanGestureRecognizer in my cocos2d game to do drag and drop of sprites. I have a row of sprites and when I drag a sprite on top of another one, the sprite underneath it and any other sprites between should shift left or right out of the way to allow space to drop the currently selected sprite. This is working ok, however, if I am too quick at dragging the sprite around the screen, this triggers another round of the UIPanGestureRecognizer's callback method, and screws up the logic, as the sprites are in-between shifting. I need a way to freeze the callback from firing, whilst the other sprites are shifting, then once they have finished moving, re-enable the callback to fire. Whats the best way to do this?

• How can I optimise ext4 for reliability?

  As ext4 was introduced as more reliable than ext3 with block journals, is there any chance to suppose it 100% reliable? What if enabling block journaling on it, which is disabled by default? As friend's guide to explain my case in more detail: I have an embedded linux device, after installation keyboard and monitor is detached and it works standalone. My duty is to make sure it has reliable file-system so with errors there is no way for manual correct faults on device. I can't force my customer to use a ups with each device to ensure no fault by power-failure. What more can ext4 offer me besides block journaling? Thanks in advance.

• 81% of European Shoppers Willing to Pay More for Better Customer Experience

  Customer Experience provides strategic driver for business growth Research released today from Oracle has revealed that customer experience is now a key driver for revenue growth in Europe, and an effective channel for brand differentiation in a globalized economy where products and services are increasingly commoditized. The research report, “Why Customer Satisfaction is No Longer Good Enough,” reveals that 81% of consumers surveyed are willing to pay more for superior customer experience. With nearly half (44%) willing to pay a premium of more than 5%. Improvement of the overall customer experience (40%), providing quick access to information and making it easier for customers to ask questions (35%) were cited as key drivers for spending more with a brand. The pan-European research, carried out in June 2012 by independent research company Loudhouse, surveyed 1400 online shoppers (50% female, 50% male) who had made a complaint or enquiry to a customer service department in the last 12 months.   In many of articles I've read, finding a mentor is often suggested. One to who would guide, teach and more. (I wouldn't know the details, I don't have one, yet.) So, who was your mentor, if any? I have only had indirect mentors: professor at university, manager at work whom I've watched and learnt from the most. And otherwise, Twitter has been a great place to follow the professionals and discover more about the technologies that interest me. But I still wonder how I could find one because I can sense that I might be lacking in my experience. Ideas?

• Best language or tool for automating tedious manual tasks

  We all have tasks that come up from time to time that we think we'd be better off scripting or automating than doing manually. Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

• Anyone used Jenkins with Sparkle (the cocoa app update framework)?

  Pushing new Sparkle releases of our internal apps is a pain. I have to make the build, make the release notes file, sign the .zip with the private key, and add a new entry to the appcast file tying everything together. I'd love it if Jenkins could help: use the commit messages for the release notes, and automatically do the rest of it. Should I be looking at writing a new Jenkins plugin, or using shell scripting, or is there something already that will do what I want? (A quick Google didn't find anything.) I'm new to Jenkins, and am still trying to get a feel for what it can do. Do any other maintainers of Cocoa apps have any tips?

• What is the politically correct way of refactoring other's code?

  I'm currently working in a geographically distributed team in a big company. Everybody is just focused on today's tasks and getting things done, however this means sometimes things have to be done the quick way, and that causes problems... you know, same old, same old. I'm bumping into code with several smells such as: big functions pointless utility functions/methods (essentially just to save writing a word), overcomplicated algorithms, extremely big files that should be broken down into different files/classes (1,500+ lines), etc. What would be the best way of improving code without making other developers feel bad/wrong about any proposed improvements?

• How do I set up multi seat?

  Hi I was hoping to have a 2 seat setup. One will be for my TV just going to run Boxee. The other is for my main Desktop. I've been looking for a good guide to help me navigate this, I'd like to use ubuntu 10.10. I am assuming it's just a case of getting a box + 2 graphics adaptors and 2 usb mice and keyboards, one of which will be bluetooth for the TV. I can't seem to find much documentation on this idea. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also I am assuming that this is all possible with a standard ubuntu install, but with some additional configuration. • Why does a computer science degree matter to a professional programmer?

  I have a degree in computer science. It has been great for opening doors, getting a job. As far as helping me in the professional field of C# .NET programming (the most popular platform and language in the area I work if not the entire united states on hands down the most popular OS in the world) its hardly useful. Why do you think it helps you as a programmer in your professional career (outside spouting off to prims algorithm to impress some interviewer)? In today's world adaptation, a quick mind, strong communication, OO and fundamental design skills enable a developer to write software that a customer will accept. These skills are only skimmed over in the cs program. In my mind, reading a 500 page C# book by Wrox offers far more useable a skillset than 4 years of the comp sci math blaster courses. Many disagree. So, why does a computer science degree matter?

• Do leaderboard sets (in Game Center) allow 500 unique leaderboards?

  The Game Kit Programming Guide for iOS claims: The number of different leaderboards allowed increases to 500 leaderboards per game when leaderboard sets have been enabled...Leaderboard sets offer developers the ability to combine several leaderboards into a single group. But their example (see image below) implies that a single leaderboard is placed into multiple leaderboard sets. Is that the only way to be able to use the full 500 leaderboards? by combining the same leaderboard into multiple sets? I want to be able to have 500 unique leaderboards that are not duplicated between sets. Is this possible?

  Hello all, I've been trying to install MoinMoin -wiki on this webserver, where I have no root access. The server doesn't support wsgi, but it does support cgi/fcgi/etc. I've scoured google for a simple guide on how to accomplish this, but the only guides I found were from the year 2004 or so. Other guides always assumed that one has root access. So can anyone link a good tutorial for my question or just help me out here? Your help is appreciated :) P.S. • How to resize a /home partition in Kubuntu?

  I was distro hopping for awhile in the past few months, so in order to keep all of my files secure, I made a partition of around 50 GB named Files to store all of my files in, and still have them for quick and easy access. However, now that I've found a distribution I'm comfortable with (Kubuntu 11.10), I would like to remove this partition, and have all of my files in my /home folder, in order to more easily deal with these files. I've moved all of my files in the partition to my /home folder (and still have plenty of room to spare), and now I'm trying to delete the partition and use the space for my /home folder. I can delete the partition just fine, however, I can't extend the /home folder into the unallocated space. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. In order to change the size of the /home partition, I need to unmount it. But, I am unable to unmount it! How do I best extend the size of the partition?

• Configure firewall (Shorewall/UFW) to allow traffic for services on an Ubuntu Server

  I have an Ubuntu Server 11.04 x64 which I want to secure. The server will be open to Internet and I want to be able to SSH/SFTP into the machine and the SSH-server runs on a custom set port. I also want a web server accessible from the Internet. These tasks seems not to hard to perform but I also want SAMBA-shares to be accessible from within the local network and this seems to be a bit trickier. If possible I also want to be able to "stealth" the ports necessary to protect the server further but also allow the SAMBA-shares to be automatically found within the local network. I've never configured firewalls before except for a router and I always bump into a bunch of problem when doing it all by myself so I was hoping for some tips or preferably a guide on how to this. Thank you! Update: On second thought I'd could just as likely go with UFW if the same settings are achievable ("stealth" ports).

  Just a quick post, mainly to test out the new blog format but related to a question on the #sqlhelp hashtag. The question came from Justin Dearing (@zippy1981) as: So I take it database_id isn’t an ever incrementing value. #sqlhelp When a new database is created it is given the lowest available ID. This either is in a gap in IDs where a database has been dropped or the database ID is incremented by one from the highest current ID if there are no gaps to fill. To see this in action, connect to your sandbox server and try this: USE MASTER GO CREATE DATABASE cherry GO USE cherry GO SELECT DB_ID() GO CREATE DATABASE grape GO USE grape GO SELECT DB_ID() GO CREATE DATABASE melon GO USE melon GO SELECT DB_ID() GO USE MASTER GO DROP DATABASE grape GO CREATE DATABASE kiwi GO USE kiwi GO SELECT DB_ID() GO USE MASTER GO DROP DATABASE cherry DROP DATABASE melon DROP DATABASE kiwi You should get an incrementing series of database IDs as the databases are created until the last one where the new database gets allocated the ID that is missing because one was dropped.
