• 500.50 error using URL Rewrite

  I ran into a 500.50 error yesterday, which wasnt very descriptive initially, so I thought I would provide some details on what it could be. First, off, if you hit the page remotely, its going to hide the real details.  It will look something like this: Server Error 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. Checking the IIS logs will show that its a 500.50 error in this case. • Cannot sleep/standby in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop i386 on my netbook (HP Mini 311c). I am unable to use the sleep mode. When I press the suspend button (or do sudo pm-suspend), the screen flickers but the computer does not power off. Even worse, the screen comes back up and I'm back where I left off. Hibernating does work (although it is not available in Power Management). I have to use pm-hibernate to make that work. I'm using the 3.2.0.20 kernel and Gnome 3.3.92 (Unity, especially compiz, is a resource hog). Before Ubuntu 12.04, I was using Mint Linux 12 with the 3.0 kernel and everything worked fine back then. Any help is much appreciated because this is driving me crazy.

• Using Resources the Right Way

  It’s an interesting time in computing technology. At one point there was a dearth of information available for solving a given problem, or educating ourselves on broader topics so that we can solve problems in the future. With dozens, perhaps hundreds or thousands of web sites and content available (for free, in many cases) from vendors, peers, even colleges and universities, it seems like there is actually too much information. Who has the time to absorb all this information and training? Even if you had the inclination, where to start? In fact, it seems so overwhelming that I often hear people saying that they can’t find the training they need, or that vendor X or Y “doesn’t help their users”. On questioning these folks, however, I often find that they – and sometimes I - haven’t put in the effort to learn what resources we have. That’s where blogs, like this one, can help. If you follow a blog, either by checking it often or perhaps subscribing to the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, you’ll be able to spread out the search or create a mental filter for the information you need. But it’s not enough just read a blog or a web page. The creators need real feedback – what doesn’t work, and what does. Yes, you’re allowed to tell a vendor or writer “This helped me because…” so that you reinforce the positives. To be sure, bring up what doesn’t work as well –  that’s fine. But be specific, and be constructive. You’d be surprised at how much it matters. I know for a fact at Microsoft we listen – there is a real live person that reads your comments. I’m sure this is true of other vendors, and I also know that most blog authors – yours truly most especially – wants to know what you think.   In this blog entry I’d to call your attention to three resources you have at your disposal, and how you can use them to help. I’ll try to bring up things like this from time to time that I find useful, and cover in them in more depth like this. Think of this as a synopsis of a longer set of resources that you can use to filter whether you want to research further, bookmark, or forward on to a circle of friends where you think it might help them.   Data Driven Design Concepts http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/jj156154 I’ll start with a great site that walks you through the process of designing a solution from a data-first perspective. As you know, I believe all computing is merely re-arranging data. If you follow that logic as well, you’ll realize that whenever you create a solution, you should start at the data-end of the application. This resource helps you do that. Even if you don’t use the specific technologies the instructions use, the concepts hold for almost any other technology that deals with data. This should be a definite bookmark for a developer, DBA, or Data Architect. When I mentioned my admiration for this resource here at Microsoft, the team that created it contacted me and asked if I’d share an e-mail address to my readers so that you can comment on it. You’re guaranteed to be heard – you can suggest changes, talk about how useful – or not – it is, and so on. I also like having ready-made, live, functional demos that show the completed solution at work. It’s a stock-trading simulator, and you can get everything from the design to the code itself, or you can just play with the application. It’s running on Windows Azure, the actual production servers we use for everything else.   Possible Duplicate: What should I be focusing on when building a development PC? I am a Microsoft Developer on Sharepoint and ASP.NET. I am tring to buy a new laptop since the one that I have is an old one. From my point of view, Microsoft Development tools are becomming more and more resource-consuming (I don't find a suitable reason for it though). So I thought I would go for a Lenovo U260 i-7.   Addressing the strong demand for Java in the embedded market, Oracle is hosting a new Java Embedded @ JavaOne event in San Francisco October 3-4. The event allows decision makers to attend the Java Embedded @ JavaOne business-focused program, while their IT/development staff can attend the technically-focused JavaOne conference. [Obligatory comment about suits & ties vs. jeans & T-shirts removed.] The two-day event includes keynotes, sessions and demonstrations. In his keynote this morning, Judson Althoff, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Alliances and Channels and Embedded Sales, Oracle explained  Devices are all around us - on 24x7, connected all the time. The explosion of devices is the next IT revolution. Java is the right solution for this space. Java embedded solutions provide a framework to  provision, manage, and secure devices.  Java embedded solutions also provide the ability to aggregate, process and analyze multitude of data.  Java is one platform to program them all. Terrance Barr, Java Evangelist and Java ME expert is enthusiastic about the huge opportunity, "It's the right time and right place for Java Embedded," he said, "Oracle is looking for partners who want to take advantage of this next wave in IT." • Use hotplug and turn on/off PCI device for replacing NIC

  How can I turn off the PCI slots and change the device (especially NIC) without shutting the server down? I found a similar question (How do I turn off PCI devices?) but there are no /sys/bus/pci/slot and no files in /sys/bus/pci/slots. • Render a 3D scene in multiple windows - extended panoramic view

  Is there any resource location on how to view a 3D scene from an application or a game on multiple windows or monitors? Each window should continue drawing from where the neighbouring one left off (in the end, the result should be a mosaic of the scene). My idea is to use a camera for each window and have a reference position and orientation for a meta-camera object that is used to correctly offset the other camera. Since there are quite some elements to consider (window specs, viewport properties, position-orientation of each render camera), what is the correct way to update the individual cameras considering the position and orientation of the central, meta-camera? I currently cannot make the cameras present the scene contiguously (and I am reluctant in working out the transformations without checking whether this is the actual way of doing things).

I wonder the same thing: how is a Codeing Dojo organized? What is the structure of a meeting? How would one pick Katas? What do you plan ahead of time? • Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. • Recommended 2D Game Engine for prototyping

  What high-level game engine would you recommend to develop a 2D game prototype on windows? (or mac/linux if you wish) The kind of things I mean by "high-level" includes (but is definitely not limited to): not having to manage low-level stuff like screen buffers, graphics contexts having an API to draw geometric shapes well, I was going to omit it but I guess being based on an actual "high-level" language is a plus (automatic resource management and the existence a reasonable set of data structures in the standard library come to mind). It seems to me that Flash is the proverbial elephant in the room for this query but I'd very much like to see different answers based on all kinds of languages or SDKs.

• How do you off load work from the database?

  In at least the web development field, web servers are everywhere but are backed by very few database servers. As web servers get hit with requests they execute large queries on the database, putting the server under heavy load. While web servers are very easy to scale, db servers are much harder (at least from what I know), making them a precious resource. One way I've heard from some answers here to take load off the database is to offload the work to the web server. Easy, until you realize that now you've got a ton of traffic internally as a web server tries to run SELECT TOP 3000 (presumably to crunch the results on its own), which still slows things down. What are other ways to take load off the database?

• Where to start? (3D Modeling)

  I'm looking for a good resource to start learning 3d modeling. I'm looking for something that starts with the basics (e.g. terminology; what are quads, triangles etc.) before/while going into the actual modeling. Book, website, video, anything will do. I'm only concerned with the quality of the tutorials, how thorough they are. I have experience with texturing, level design and so on - but I've never created anything more than simple shapes/editing existing assets.

• How should I practice web server administration?

  Security students can practice their skills with software like OWASP's webgoat or something similar to "hackthissite". Students interested in Operating Systems can study MINIX and PintOS, write shell scripts or study POSIX system calls. What would be the best course of action in order to practice Server Administration? Is there any such software/resource available, teaching you such skills with small lessons, or it is totally up to you? I've practiced live FreeBSD server administration and management of VMs (CentOS, Gentoo, Debian) under VirtualBox, but I always feel that this isn't enough and I must push myself harder. So, what would you recommend? What has worked for you?

  What system specifications would a game need if it was: Total players per planet: ~20000 Total players per team:~1M Total players per map(small volume of space or small surface over a planet): ~2000 Total players: ~10M(world has more players than this amount i think) Two of the players are commanders of opposite quadrants(from HUD of a strategy game). Lots of players use space-crafts as a captain(like 3d fps and rts). Many many players control consoles in those space-crafts as under command of captains.(fps ) Some players are still in stone-age trying to reinvent wheel in some planet. Players design and construct any vehicles they have. With good physics engine Has puzzles inside. Everyone get experience by doing stuff(RPG). Commerce, income or totally different resource-based group(like starcraft) Player classes(primitive: cunning and strong, wrapped: healthy, wealthy) Arcade top-down style firing with ships when people get bored very low chance of miraculous things.(mediclorians, wormholes, bugs) Different game-modes: persistent(living world), resetted periodically(a new chance for noobs), instant(pre-built space + hack&slash) I suspect this would need 128GB ram and 2048 cores.
