• Understanding The Very Nature Of Linux - Becoming Core Programmer

  Well, I want to know how I should exactly start and get into the right path to become a core programmer and also get decent understanding of Linux infrastructure and fundamentals. I know my question may seem general or something but that's not because of my inability to ask a question.I'm just confused, I've programmed in a few languages and have got my hand dirty to code so I'm aware of the big picture of what the programmers actually do.Now, I want to get deeper and start my studies in a different level than I used to learn before, I want to become advanced core programmer and learn where it really start from.I'd like to know the bit by bit of what the today's operating systems like linux have been built on. I DO really need good references, books would be preferred for learning the fundamentals.If someone tell me the general path of what I'm supposed to do, it would be really appreciated.

• I attempted to install cuda drivers, and now almost everything is broken

  I tried to install CUDA tookit 5.0 on ubuntu 12.04 and the installation proceeded OK. After rebooting however, all I get is a terminal login. I've attempted to start the display manager with sudo start lightdm and it says all OK, but just hangs the prompt when it finishes loading without ever starting any display manager. sudo start gdm just flickers and goes back to the prompt. There is no network connection on the machine either. It usually connects to a wireless network with remembered credentials. What can I do to recover the machine?

• Weird y offset when using custom frag shader (Cocos2d-x)

  I'm trying to mask a sprite so I wrote a simple fragment shader that renders only the pixels that are not hidden under another texture (the mask). The problem is that it seems my texture has its y-coordinate offset after passing through the shader. Thanks :) EDIT It looks like after passing through the shader when I set the position of the sprite I set it in points, with (0,0) being in the top-right. Indeed, when I do sprite->setPosition(320, 480), the sprite is perfectly placed at the top of the screen.

• What software development process should I learn first for a solo project?

  I want to develop a project on my own (if it is sucessful more people might start working on it too). Also I want to apply some proper software engineering from the first until the last day. On one hand just to try it out and compare results with previous projects that were just about writing code quick and dirty, and on the other hand to learn! I know the proper answer to this question is "It depends very much on the project...", "There is no single correct answer...". But I just need someplace to start, somewhere where every step is written down and tells me what to do. If I'm not happy next time I'll try something else. So, how/where should I start? I would love to hear some book suggestions cause I'm all about books :-D.

• Google Webmaster Tools Data Highlighter says "Failed to load data, please try again later"

  I seem to be unable to access the data highlighter in Google Webmaster Tools since I attempted to start a new highlight on a page. Clicking the red Start Highlighting button to open the tagger did nothing, so I refreshed. Now, the page loads without the middle content section, then a few seconds later shows the following error: Failed to load data, please try again later. I can't get any of the middle section to load, even the list of current pages/page sets that have been highlighted—this error shows. I thought it may be a Google service outage, but other sites' data highlighters work fine. It also seems coincidental that it stopped working after I attempted to start highlighting—I was able to list the existing pages and page sets fine before that, and still am able to access the service on other sites. I've tried clearing browser data and have tried Google Chrome as well—same problem. What's happened?

Often, I’ve heard web managers say that their segments aren’t well understood yet, so they can’t really deliver personalized online experiences that are meaningful. This lack of complete understanding means that they don't really bother to try. But, I don’t think you necessarily need to have an elaborate segmentation and targeting strategy already in place to start delivering a more relevant online customer experience. Sometimes it helps to think of how segmentation and targeting might solve some of the challenges your sites visitors are currently experiencing on your web presence, rather than doing nothing and waiting until a fully baked segmentation strategy lands in your inbox.  For example, perhaps you have a broad and varied service offering that makes it difficult for site visitors to easily find the solutions that are most relevant for them.  How can segmentation and targeting help solve this problem?  Or maybe it’s like the airline I described in Monday’s post where the special deals featured on the home page are only relevant to site visitors from a couple of cities.  Couldn’t segmentation and targeting help them to highlight offers on their home page that are relevant to a larger share of their site visitors? Your early segmentation and targeting efforts do not need to be complicated.  There are simple ways to start delivering a more relevant online customer experience, even if you’re dealing with anonymous site visitors.  These include targeting content to site visitors based on: Referral: Deliver targeted content to your site visitors that is based on where they came from or the search term they used to find your site Behavior:  Deliver content to your site visitors that is related or similar to content they’ve clicked on already Location:  Deliver content your site visitors that is most relevant for their geographic location (this would solve that pesky airline home page problem described above) So as you can see, there really are some very simple ways in which you can start improving your online customer experience using very basic segmentation and targeting methods.  One thing to keep in mind as you start to define you segmentation and targeting strategy is that there are many different types of attributes or combinations of attributes upon which you can base your segmentation and targeting strategy.  In addition to referral, behavior and location, other attributes that you should consider are: Profile Information:  What profile information do you know about this customer already?  Perhaps they provided some information on their interests and preferences when they first registered with your site. Time:  What time is it and how does that impact what my site visitors are looking for or trying to do? Demographics: What are my site visitors’ ages, incomes or ethnicities? Which attributes you select to include in your segmentation strategy will depend on your unique business needs and objectives.  Attributes such as behavior or referral may not be the most important targeting criteria depending on your situation. For example, if you’re a newspaper you might know that certain visitors are sports fans based on their profile information.  You can create a segment for sports fans and target sports related content to that segment of your readership online.  Or perhaps, a reader is browsing stories that are related to politics; you can use that visitor’s behavior to assign him or her to a segment for those interested in politics. From there you can recommend more stories to that visitor based on their interest in politics. For an airline, the visitor’s location may be a more important attribute. By detecting the visitor’s location, you can assign them to an appropriate segment and then target special flights and offers to them based on their likely departure airport. As you can see, there are many practical ways that you can start improving the experience your customers receive on your web presence using fairly basic segmentation and targeting techniques.   My growing company has a team of developers working on a number of separate projects. Our developers depend on us to keep them working, and we depend on them to make our clients happy. Our projects have differing start and end dates, as you can imagine. The company's responsibility to the developers is to make sure we have clients waiting in the wings so that when one project ends, another can start. For now, finding clients is not a problem and not the topic of this question. What I'm trying to think through right now is, how can I best measure/view/evaluate the end dates of projects so that I know when I need to start courting the next client. Is there a tool that does this? If it's just a spreadsheet, what might it look like?

• Where can you find your first customers as a freelancer?

  I want to start doing freelance work, but no matter how I look at it, it seems like the best way to get customers and to have work most of the time, you have to already be in the freelancing game. Most freelancers I've talked to have had the same customers over the years or got new customers because their satisfied clients referred them. What I'd like to know from the successful people here that work as freelancers is how do you start doing business when you haven't yet set foot in freelancing? I want to start small, creating websites that won't require me to hire other people other than maybe a designer I already know. (I'd like to create desktop applications as well, but I think I should keep that for later when I'm more experienced) . I thought about localized Google ads or visiting companies and meeting the people in charge there, but I wouldn't know which kind of businesses to look for or if it's even a good way to approach this. Anyone care to share their personal startup experiences / advice that can help future freelancers?

• Rel = translation

  I can't find much online about rel="translation" We have tutorials and manual entries which we are going to get users to translate. If the original page in English is: http://www.scirra.com/tutorial/start And there are two translations: http://www.scirra.com/tutorial/es/start (spanish) http://www.scirra.com/tutorial/de/start (german) How would I correctly link all these up? I'm aware at the top of the page I would need to specify the correct IS639-1 code: <html lang="de"> But I'm more interested in letting Google know they are not duplicates but are translated.

• Server 11.04 Bind9 Failure

  After 3 weeks of trying to diagnose a failure of bind9, to start I have to admit I need assistance. Initially it was running correctly and when I made a modification to a bind file and re-run it an error msg came back rndc: 127.0.0.1#953 bind9 start fail It also fails to start on any other bind9 upgrade or required pkg. grep on mysql returns nothing now even if it is running, and dig on 127 only works when I have my phone connected as a modem. I don't have any more diagnostics that I know of, so some help would be appreciated as development has stopped.

• Why UFW has to be (re)started at boot time if it's only iptables rule manager?

  README from source package says: When installing ufw from source, you will also need to integrate it into your boot process for the firewall to start when you restart your system. Depending on your needs, this can be as simple as adding the following to a startup script (eg rc.local for systems that use it): # /lib/ufw/ufw-init start For systems that use SysV initscripts, an example script is provided in doc/initscript.example. See doc/upstart.example for an Upstart example. Consult your distribution's documentation for the proper way to modify your boot process. On my system I have this: # /etc/ufw/ufw.conf # # Set to yes to start on boot. If setting this remotely, be sure to add a rule # to allow your remote connection before starting ufw. Eg: 'ufw allow 22/tcp' ENABLED=yes So, why does simple iptables rule manager need to be started at boot time? Is there any secret to that, or it merely checks if all rules are in place ?

• How to organize continuous code reviews?

  We develop in branches. Before a branch gets merged into the main stream (master branch) we review the changes made, by creating a new "code review" in Crucible. Reviewers add their comments to the code review and the ticket/branch gets bounced back to the author, if it needs to be improved. After the improvements are made we get this branch/ticket again back to the code review. We again create a new code review in Crucible, loosing all previously made comments. We simply start from scratch. It's a big waste of time. Do you know any tools that support a continuous mode for reviews, where we don't need to start from scratch every time, but can pick up the comments already made (re-start the review, so to speak).

• permission denied errors while starting namenode in hadoop 2.2.0

  I recently installed hadoop2.2.0 on my desktop running : Linux livingstream 3.2.0-29-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:03:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Lin I am able to format the namenode just fine , however when I start the namenode using the following command: hadoop-daemon.sh start namenode I get the following permission errors , can anyone please help me with these errors: hduser@livingstream:/usr/local/hadoop$ hadoop-daemon.sh start namenode mkdir: cannot create directory `/var/run/hadoop': Permission denied starting namenode, logging to /var/log/hadoop/hduser/hadoop-hduser-namenode- livingstream.out /usr/sbin/hadoop-daemon.sh: line 138: /var/run/hadoop/hadoop-hduser-namenode.pid: No such file or directory Can you please help me with these errors. • Right mix of planning and programing on a new project

  I am about to start a new project (a game, but thats unimportant). The basic idea is in my head but not all the details. I don't want to start programming without planning, but I am seriously fighting my urge to just do it. I want some planning before to prevent refactoring the whole app just because a new feature I could think of requires it. On the other hand, I don't want to plan multiple months (spare time) and start that because I have some fear that I will lose my motivation in this time. What I am looking for is a way of combining both without one dominating the other. Should I realize the project in the way of scrum? Should I creating user stories and then realize them? Should I work feature driven? (I have some experience in scrum and the classic "specification to code" way.)

• Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx. But then when it tries to run, I get this error: [root@clark directra]# passenger start -a 127.0.0.1 -p 3001 -d --user dweb *** ERROR *** Could not start Passenger Nginx core: nginx: [alert] could not open error log file: open() "/tmp/passenger-standalone.16757/logs/error.log" failed (2: No such file or directory) nginx: [alert] Unable to start the Phusion Passenger watchdog (/var/lib/passenger-standalone/3.0.11-x86-ruby1.9.3-linux-gcc4.1.2-1002/support/ agents/PassengerWatchdog): Permission denied (13) (13: Permission denied) Stopping web server... done FWIW, /tmp is writeable. Any idea what's wrong?

• Network does not connect at boot

  I am on Ubuntu 12.04, fresh install. When I boot a machine, the boot screen says Connecting to network, later it is changed to something like Did not connect, trying for another 60s. However, the network does not connect at the boot. But I can then log in without a network connection, and if I start a network manager service manually from the terminal (sudo service network-manager start), the network is connected without any problems. Please, does anybody know where the problem could be? I don't want to wait more than two minutes every computer restart :-). I am new to Ubuntu (and also to upstart) so I am a bit lost. There is no /var/log/messages, in dmesg I found this record, though it may not be related: init: network-interface (eth1) pre-start process (492) terminated with status 1 init: network-interface (eth1) post-stop process (548) terminated with status 1 Thanks Daniel

• Finding "spare time" in a day from within a list of events

  I have a list of events which is always sorted chronologically. The start time is always followed by the end time. Times are strings formatted as 'HHmmss'. // list of events var events = [ '010000', // start '013000', // end... '053000', '060000', '161500', '184500'] // desired output var spares = [ '000000', // start '010000', // end... '013000', '053000', '060000', '161500', '184500', '235959'] How can I programmatically create a new list of "spare time" from 000000 to 235959? PS I'm trying to do this in Javascript, but any conceptual answer or pseudo code would be helpful too.

• Nagios3 crashes with SIGSEGV

  I installed nagios3 on ubuntu server 10.04.1. It was working fine. Today, I found it stopped and when I tried to start it using sudo /etc/init.d/nagios3 start, it did not start. I found this in the log file: Nagios 3.2.0 starting... (PID=11729) Local time is Wed Dec 22 14:15:31 2010 Caught SIGSEGV, shutting down... I tried to remove and re-install it without success. After googling, it seems that no one has a solution for this. I don't want to install it from source unless it is really the last hope.
