  • How to add another OS entry in Wubi grub

    - by Amey Jah
I am trying to install another linux distro besides ubuntu. However, I want to retain my existing windows based loader. Currently, as per my knowledge, MsDos loads grub which then loads Ubuntu (with loop back trick). Now, I have a new linux distro installed on /dev/sda8 (/boot for new distro) where as /root for that OS is installed on /dev/sda9. I tried following steps 1. Add entry into 40_custom of ubuntu grub 2. update grub But upon booting via that entry, it is not able to load the new OS and shows me blank screen. What could be the problem? Additional data: grub.cfg file of ubuntu menuentry 'Ubuntu' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-simple-fc296be2-8c59-4f21-a3f8-47c38cd0d537' { gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode insmod gzio insmod ntfs set root='hd0,msdos5' if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; • Inside Red Gate - Be Reasonable!

    - by simonc
As I discussed in my previous posts, divisions and project teams within Red Gate are allowed a lot of autonomy to manage themselves. It's not just the teams though, there's an awful lot of freedom given to individual employees within the company as well. Reasonableness How Red Gate treats it's employees is embodied in the phrase 'You will be reasonable with us, and we will be reasonable with you'. As an employee, you are trusted to do your job to the best of you ability. There's no one looking over your shoulder, no one clocking you in and out each day. Everyone is working at the company because they want to, and one of the core ideas of Red Gate is that the company exists to 'let people do the best work of their lives'. Everything is geared towards that. To help you do your job, office services and the IT department are there. If you need something to help you work better (a third or fourth monitor, footrests, or a new keyboard) then ask people in Information Systems (IS) or Office Services and you will be given it, no questions asked. Everyone has administrator access to their own machines, and you can install whatever you want on it. If there's a particular bit of software you need, then ask IS and they will buy it. As an example, last year I wanted to replace my main hard drive with an SSD; I had a summer job at school working in a computer repair shop, so knew what to do. I went to IS and asked for 'an SSD, a SATA cable, and a screwdriver'. And I got it there and then, even the screwdriver. Awesome. I screwed it in myself, copied all my main drive files across, and I was good to go. Of course, if you're not happy doing that yourself, then IS will sort it all out for you, no problems. If you need something that the company doesn't have (say, a book off Amazon, or you need some specifications printing off & bound), then everyone has a expense limit of £100 that you can use without any sign-off needed from your managers. If you need a company credit card for whatever reason, then you can get it. This freedom extends to working hours and holiday; you're expected to be in the office 11am-3pm each day, but outside those times you can work whenever you want. If you need a half-day holiday on a days notice, or even the same day, then you'll get it, unless there's a good reason you're needed that day. If you need to work from home for a day or so for whatever reason, then you can. If it's reasonable, then it's allowed. Trust issues? A lot of trust, and a lot of leeway, is given to all the people in Red Gate. Everyone is expected to work hard, do their jobs to the best of their ability, and there will be a minimum of bureaucratic obstacles that stop you doing your work. What happens if you abuse this trust? Well, an example is company trip expenses. You're free to expense what you like; food, drink, transport, etc, but if you expenses are not reasonable, then you will never travel with the company again. Simple as that. Everyone knows when they're abusing the system, so simply don't do it. Along with reasonableness, another phrase used is 'Don't be an a**hole'. If you act like an a**hole, and abuse any of the trust placed in you, even if you're the best tester, salesperson, dev, or manager in the company, then you won't be a part of the company any more. From what I know about other companies, employee trust is highly variable between companies, all the way up to CCTV trained on employee's monitors. As a dev, I want to produce well-written & useful code that solves people's problems. Being able to get whatever I need - install whatever tools I need, get time off when I need to, obtain reference books within a day - all let me do my job, and so let Red Gate help other people do their own jobs through the tools we produce. Plus, I don't think I would like working for a company that doesn't allow admin access to your own machine and blocks Facebook! Cross posted from Simple Talk.

  • Store a long string into mult array

    - by QLiu
Hello All, I have a long string arrays, which looks like that var callinfo_data=new Array( "1300 135 604#<b>Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. AEST</b>", //Australia .. "0844000040#<b>lunedì-venerdì ore 10:00 - 17:00 CET</b>", //Switzerland (it) "212 356 9707#<b>Hafta içi her gün: 10:00 - 18:00</b>", //Turkey "08451610009#<b>Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. GMT</b>", //UK "866 486 6866#<b>Monday - Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. EST</b><br />Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST", //USA "+31208501004#<b>Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. GMT+1</b>", //other countries " # "); As you see, it contact Phone number and open time. I can use split to separet them into info=callinfo_data[n].split("#"); two sections, And then i can represent them in HTML like "<div id ='phoneNumber'>"+info[0]+"</div><div id='openTime'>"+info[1]+"</div>" But my display phone number function will read the cookie variables, and then select the right contact info to display. Like, phone=callinfo_data[2].split("#"); if (locale == 'UK') details = phone[0]+ build_dropdown(locale); else if (locale == 'fr') details = 'French Contact Details<br>'+build_dropdown(locale); else if (locale == 'be') details = 'Belgian Contact Details<br>'+ build_dropdown(locale); else details = 'Unknown Contact Detail'; writeContactInfo(details); My questions are how I can build a function to load phone number and time based on my cookie variables, UK in a smart way. I can hard code everything, but i think it is too silly. I have to write a long code like: phone1= allinfo_data[0].split("#"); phone1= allinfo_data[1].split("#"); ... etc Second questions, how can I load this long arrays into easy access multi arrays? Thank you Regards, Qing

  • Complex relationship between tables in NHibernate

    - by Ilya Kogan
Hi all, I'm writing a Fluent NHibernate mapping for a legacy Oracle database. The challenge is that the tables have composite primary keys. If I were at total freedom, I would redesign the relationships and auto-generate primary keys, but other applications must write to the same database and read from it, so I cannot do it. These are the two tables I'll focus on: Example data Trips table: 1, 10:00, 11:00 ... 1, 12:00, 15:00 ... 1, 16:00, 19:00 ... 2, 12:00, 13:00 ... 3, 9:00, 18:00 ... Faults table: 1, 13:00 ... 1, 23:00 ... 2, 12:30 ... In this case, vehicle 1 made three trips and has two faults. The first fault happened during the second trip, and the second fault happened while the vehicle was resting. Vehicle 2 had one trip, during which a fault happened. Constraints Trips of the same vehicle never overlap. So the tables have an optional one-to-many relationship, because every fault either happens during a trip or it doesn't. If I wanted to join them in SQL, I would write: select ... from Faults left outer join Trips on Faults.VehicleId = Trips.VehicleId and Faults.FaultTime between Trips.TripStartTime and Trips.TripEndTime and then I'd get a dataset where every fault appears exactly once (one-to-many as I said). Note that there is no Vehicles table, and I don't need one. But I did create a view that contains all VehicleIds from both tables, so I can use it as a junction table. What am I actually looking for? The tables are huge because they cover years of data, and every time I only need to fetch a range of a few hours. So I need a mapping and a criteria that will run something like the following SQL underneath: select ... from Faults left outer join Trips on Faults.VehicleId = Trips.VehicleId and Faults.FaultTime between Trips.TripStartTime and Trips.TripEndTime where Faults.FaultTime between :p0 and :p1 Do you have any ideas how to achieve it? Note 1: Currently the application shouldn't write to the database, so persistence is not a must, although if the mapping supports persistence, it may help at some point in the future. Note 2: I know it's a tough one, so if you give me a great answer, you will be properly rewarded :) Thank you for reading this long question, and now I only hope for the best :)

  • MySQL Query to find consecutive available times of variable lenth

    - by Armaconn
    I have an events table that has user_id, date ('2013-10-01'), time ('04:15:00'), and status_id; What I am looking to find is a solution similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2665574/find-consecutive-rows-calculate-duration but I need I need two additional components: 1) Take date into consideration, so 10/1/2013 at 11:00 PM - 10/2/2013 at 3:00AM. Feel free to just put in a fake date range (like '2013-10-01' to '2013-10-31') 2) Limit output to only include when there are 4+ consecutive times (each event is 15 minutes and I want it to display minimum blocks of an hour, but would also like to be able to switch this restriction to 1.5 hours or some other duration if possible). SUMMARY - Looking for a query that provides the start and end times for a set of events that have the same user_id, status_id, and are in a continuous series based on date and time. For which I can restrict results based on date range and minimum series duration. So the output should have: user_id, date_start, time_start, date_end, time_end, status_id, duration CREATE TABLE `events` ( `event_id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment COMMENT 'ID', `user_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `date` date NOT NULL, `time` time NOT NULL, `status_id` int(11) default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`event_id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 AUTO_INCREMENT=1568 ; INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(1, 101, '2013-08-14', '23:00:00', 2); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(2, 101, '2013-08-14', '23:15:00', 2); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(3, 101, '2013-08-14', '23:30:00', 2); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(4, 101, '2013-08-14', '23:45:00', 2); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(5, 101, '2013-08-15', '00:00:00', 2); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(6, 101, '2013-08-15', '00:15:00', 1); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(7, 500, '2013-08-14', '23:45:00', 1); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(8, 500, '2013-08-15', '00:00:00', 1); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(9, 500, '2013-08-15', '00:15:00', 2); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(10, 500, '2013-08-15', '00:30:00', 2); INSERT INTO `events` VALUES(11, 500, '2013-08-15', '00:45:00', 1); Desired output row |user_id | date_start | time_start | date_end | time_end | status_id | duration 1 |101 |'2013-08-14'| '23:00:00' |'2013-08-15'|'00:15:00'| 2 | 5 2 |101 |'2013-08-15'| '00:00:15' |'2013-08-15'|'00:30:00'| 1 | 1 3 |500 |'2013-08-14'| '00:23:45' |'2013-08-15'|'00:15:00'| 1 | 2 4 |500 |'2013-08-15'| '00:00:15' |'2013-08-15'|'00:45:00'| 2 | 2 5 |500 |'2013-08-15'| '00:00:45' |'2013-08-15'|'01:00:00'| 2 | 1 *except that rows 2 and 5 wouldn't appear if duration had to be greater than 30 minutes Thanks for any help that you can provide! • Calendar Day View in PHP

    - by JamesArmes
I'm working on adding a day view option to an existing calendar solution. Like many people implementing their own calendars, I am trying to model Google Calendars. They have an excellent calendar solution and their day view provides a lot of flexibility. For most part, the implementation is going well; however, I'm having issues when it comes to conflicting events. Essentially, I want the events to share the same space, side by side. Events that start at the same time should have the longest event first. In the example data set I'm working with, I have four events: A: 10:30 - 11:30 B: 13:30 - 14:30 C: 10:30 - 11:00 D: 10:45 - 14:00 I can handle A, C, and D just fine, the problem comes with D. A should be left of C which should be left of D; each taking one third of the width (it's fixed width so I can do simple math to figure that out). The problem is that B should be under A and C, to the left of D. Ideally, B would take up the same amount of space as A and C (two thirds width), but I would even settle for it only taking up only one third width. My array of events looks similar to the following: $events = array( '1030' => array( 'uniqueID1' => array( 'start_time' => '1030', 'end_time' => '1130', ), 'uniqueID2' => array( 'start_time' => '1030', 'end_time' => '1100', ), ), '1045' => array( 'uniqueID3' => array( 'start_time' => '1045', 'end_time' => '1400', ), ), '1330' => array( 'uniqueID3' => array( 'start_time' => '1330', 'end_time' => '1430', ), ), ); My plan is to add some indexes to each event that include how many events it conflicts with (so I can calculate the width) and which position in that series it should be (so I can calculate the left value). However, that doesn't help the B. I'm thinking I might need an algorithm that uses some basic geometry and matrices, but I'm not sure where to begin. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • How can I use $(this) in a function called by the onClick event?

    - by tepkenvannkorn
    I want to set the current state to selected when clicking on each link. I can do this by: <ul class="places"> <li class="selected"> <a href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="myClick(0);"> <span class="date">Saturday November 2, 2013</span> <span class="time">10am – 12pm</span> <span class="location">Western Sydney Parklands</span> </a> </li> <li> <a href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="myClick(1);"> <span class="date">Saturday November 9, 2013</span> <span class="time">10am – 12pm</span> <span class="location">Bankstown High School</span> </a> </li> <li> <a href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="myClick(2);"> <span class="date">Tuesday November 12, 2013</span> <span class="time">9am – 11am</span> <span class="location">Greystanes Park</span> </a> </li> </ul> $(document).ready( function() { $('.places li a').click( function() { $('.places li').removeClass('selected'); $(this).parent().addClass('selected'); }); }); But this will double triggering onclick event an each link because the calling function myClick() is called to push data to map. Then I decided to implement these in the myClick() function: function myClick( id ) { google.maps.event.trigger(markers[id], 'click'); $('.places li').removeClass('selected'); $(this).parent().addClass('selected'); } The problem is that I cannot use $(this) to add class to its parent li. See what I have tried here. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

  • BSOD & System Failure after trying to install a new RAM

    - by Praveen Kumar
I have updated the question with sections, so that people won't find it difficult to read. Basic System Information Let me give a basic introduction on my system. I have a system of following configuration: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40GHz RAM: Corsair Vengeance - 4GB Single Module DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9) x 2 OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, SP1 Build 7601 HDD: 1 TB Seagate 7200 RPM The Problem It was working fine for about an year. Yesterday I planned to increase my RAM to 16 GB by putting another set of two Corsair Vengeance - 4GB Single Module DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9). I got it from an authorized reseller and also, the RAM was fitted by a service engineer only. After the RAM was fit (all the four), the system failed to start, with an error code of 0x000000f4. The complete information of it is: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 16393 Additional information about the problem: BCCode: f4 BCP1: 0000000000000003 BCP2: FFFFFA8008A39060 BCP3: FFFFFA8008A39340 BCP4: FFFFF800037C8510 OS Version: 6_1_7601 Service Pack: 1_0 Product: 256_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\093012-13041-01.dmp C:\Users\Praveen Kumar\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-30716-0.sysdata.xml Read our privacy statement online: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=104288&clcid=0x0409 If the online privacy statement is not available, please read our privacy statement offline: C:\Windows\system32\en-US\erofflps.txt Another Problem We first thought that it was the RAM, which caused the issue. So I returned the RAMs and now my computer configuration is exactly how it was the previous day. But, following the removal of the RAM, I also had several crashes after that. One suspicious thing was with an error code c0000134: STOP: c0000135 The program can’t start because %hs is missing from your computer . Try resintalling the program to fix this problem. After reading contents from this, this and this, which were never my case, they didn't help me. But I didn't receive any more STOP c0000134 messages. But this 0x000000f4 keeps on coming. I am writing from the same system and it allows me to work for say, half an hour max. Then I hear a device disconnect sound, the one you hear in Windows 7, when a USB Mass Storage Device is plugged out. Immediately following that, my screen goes blank and I get 0x000000f4 blue screen. Okay, now I am really concerned about my Hard Disk data, but I have no clue if there is a problem with the HDD. My Question What all files do I need to submit for your reference? Can this issue be fixed? I am getting more time if I remove my RAM, clean it and then put it back. Weird! Hope I have given the necessary information to help you guys. Thanks in advance. Minidumps I have uploaded all the Minidump DMP files from C:\Windows\Minidump folder here: http://www.praveen-kumar.com/Minidumps.zip Let me know if you face any issues in accessing it. Will be able to share elsewhere. Updates 30-Sep-2012 10:15 AM IST: When I keep the system cover opened, pressed the HDD Cable well, it is allowing me to be on for about half an hour, I guess? Also, I feel that the CPU fan speed is kind of slow. It rotates at around 900 RPM, but the CPU Temperature is not more than 70° C. 30-Sep-2012 10:30 AM IST: My Modem (Beetel 220BX ADSL2+ Router) failed. I have no idea how it is related to this issue, but I thought that I need to document this too. I really have a bad day here. 30-Sep-2012 11:00 AM IST: System still running fine, with the cabinet cover open, now for about an hour. 30-Sep-2012 12:00 PM IST: I shut down the system and closed the cabinet. Started the system, and it hung after giving the password. After a few minutes, got the same 0x000000f4 error. So, while it is in the upright position, fixed the Hard Disk cable and now it is booting fine. Waiting for more observations and answers.

  • overriding new ubuntu installation

    - by tkoomzaaskz
I've got a ubuntu 11.10 which has lost its support in May 2013, now I'd like to reintall up to the most up-to-date LTS, which is 12.04. My question is regarding my current partitions and doing backups. Is there a safe way to backup my data on some local partitions instead of copying files into DVDs/external drives (this is very uncormortable in my situation). Following are system commands shoing my disk: $ lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO MOUNTPOINT sda 8:0 0 232,9G 0 +-sda1 8:1 0 48,8G 0 +-sda2 8:2 0 63G 0 +-sda3 8:3 0 1K 0 +-sda4 8:4 0 53,7G 0 / +-sda5 8:5 0 18,6G 0 +-sda6 8:6 0 25,5G 0 +-sda7 8:7 0 23,3G 0 [SWAP] sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 and $ sudo fdisk -l [sudo] password for xyz: Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes glowic: 255, sektorów/sciezke: 63, cylindrów: 30401, w sumie sektorów: 488397168 Jednostka = sektorów, czyli 1 * 512 = 512 bajtów Rozmiar sektora (logiczny/fizyczny) w bajtach: 512 / 512 Rozmiar we/wy (minimalny/optymalny) w bajtach: 512 / 512 Identyfikator dysku: 0xc3ffc3ff Device Boot Beginning End Blocks ID System /dev/sda1 * 2048 102402047 51200000 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda2 215044096 347080703 66018304 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda3 347082750 488392064 70654657+ 5 Extended /dev/sda4 102402048 215042047 56320000 83 Linux /dev/sda5 395905923 434975939 19535008+ 83 Linux /dev/sda6 434976003 488392064 26708031 83 Linux /dev/sda7 347082752 395905023 24411136 82 Linux swap / Solaris In the beginning I had Windows Vista pre-installed with the machine when it was bought (damn!) and I installed linux (the one I have now). The windows-program in master boot record has been overriden by grub and now I can boot with both Windows and Linux. This is list of mounted devices: $ mount /dev/sda4 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro,commit=0) proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw) none on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw) none on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw) udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620) tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,size=10%,mode=0755) none on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=5242880) none on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev) binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/tomasz/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid, nodev, user=tomasz) It's strange (I don't remember such thing) that my current linux uses only one partition (/dev/sda4). But, anyway, it seems like that. My final question is: am I able to use one of the existing linux partitions for a backup and install ubuntu 12.04 without removing neither windows nor ubuntu 11.04? I mean - will grub automatically accept both old windows vista and 2 linuxes (old 11.10 and "new" 12.04)? Is there any hidden operation done while installation that could harm my custom-backup-partition while installing? my fstab file: proc /proc proc nodev, noexec, nosuid 0 0 # / was on /dev/sda4 during installation UUID=d44e89f5-9da2-48eb-83b3-887652ec95d2 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1 # swap was on /dev/sda7 during installation UUID=bbe50535-ba57-434a-9272-211d859f0e00 none swap sw 0 0 sda5 and sda6 are trash partitions created during unsuccessful linux installation (this was linux installation before my current installation), I didn't delete these partitions, but I have access to them (and I can use them as backup partitions). edit: second question is: why does lsblk show /dev/sda having 232,9G while fdisk shows that it has 250.1GB? Where does the difference come from?

  • Ubuntu server loses exactly 5 minutes once in a while

    - by Harold Smith
    I noticed that my server, an Ubuntu server 12.04, was losing time. I figured the hardware clock was off or maybe dying due to a faulty CMOS battery. I installed NTP to ensure the drift would be corrected, but to no avail. During a day it would lose 20 minutes or so. To debug, I created a small cron job to check against a remote servers time, which I knew to be correct. The script calculates the difference in seconds between local and remote time. The result was interesting. It seems to be losing exactly 5 minutes several times during the day. Look at this log (difference from remote server noted in seconds): Tue Oct 23 03:30:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 03:35:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 03:40:01 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 03:45:02 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 03:50:02 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 03:55:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 04:00:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 04:05:01 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 04:10:01 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 04:15:02 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:30:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:35:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:40:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:45:02 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:05:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:10:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:15:02 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:30:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:35:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:40:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:05:03 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:15:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 06:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:30:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:45:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 06:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:55:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 07:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:05:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:30:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 07:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:00:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 08:05:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:30:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 08:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:05:03 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:30:01 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:00:01 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:05:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:10:07 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:20:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:25:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:30:02 CEST 2012: 883 Tue Oct 23 10:35:01 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:40:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:45:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:50:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:55:02 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:00:02 CEST 2012: 1183 Tue Oct 23 11:05:01 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:10:02 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:15:02 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:20:02 CEST 2012: 1184 This does not seem to be faulty CMOS battery in my opinion. But what do you think?

  • Can't re-mount existing RAID10 on Ubuntu

    - by Zoran
I saw similar questions, but didn't find what solution to my problem. After power-cut, one of RAID10 (4 disks were) appears to be malfunctioning. I make tha array active one, but can not mount it. Always the same error: mount: you must specify the filesystem type So, here is what I have when type mdadm --detail /dev/md0 /dev/md0: Version : 00.90.03 Creation Time : Tue Sep 1 11:00:40 2009 Raid Level : raid10 Array Size : 1465148928 (1397.27 GiB 1500.31 GB) Used Dev Size : 732574464 (698.64 GiB 750.16 GB) Raid Devices : 4 Total Devices : 3 Preferred Minor : 0 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Mon Jun 11 09:54:27 2012 State : clean, degraded Active Devices : 3 Working Devices : 3 Failed Devices : 0 Spare Devices : 0 Layout : near=2, far=1 Chunk Size : 64K UUID : 1a02e789:c34377a1:2e29483d:f114274d Events : 0.166 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 8 16 0 active sync /dev/sdb 1 0 0 1 removed 2 8 48 2 active sync /dev/sdd 3 8 64 3 active sync /dev/sde At the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf I have by default, scan all partitions (/proc/partitions) for MD superblocks. alternatively, specify devices to scan, using wildcards if desired. • What's going on with my server? High load, lots of idle CPU time, low disk utilization

    - by Jonathan
I run a web site and send a legitimate opt-in, daily email newsletter to subscribers. Both the web hosting and email sending are done by the same machine. I have about 100,000 subscribers who have opted in to my daily email newsletter. My PHP script did a pretty good job sending mail to all of them until fairly recently, but as the list has grown I can't keep up. When I run top, I have very high load--usually at least 6 or 7, sometimes as high as 15--even though I only have two CPUs. However, when I run sar, my CPU is idle an average of about 30% of the time. So, it seems I'm not CPU bound. When I run iostat, it seems as though I'm not disk bound because my %util for each device is very low (no more than 5%). • Keeping track of File System Utilization in Ops Center 12c

    - by S Stelting
Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c provides significant monitoring capabilities, combined with very flexible incident management. These capabilities even extend to monitoring the file systems associated with Solaris or Linux assets. Depending on your needs you can monitor and manage incidents, or you can fine tune alert monitoring rules to specific file systems. This article will show you how to use Ops Center 12c to Track file system utilization Adjust file system monitoring rules Disable file system rules Create custom monitoring rules If you're interested in this topic, please join us for a WebEx presentation! Date: Thursday, November 8, 2012 Time: 11:00 am, Eastern Standard Time (New York, GMT-05:00) Meeting Number: 598 796 842 Meeting Password: oracle123 To join the online meeting ------------------------------------------------------- 1. This tab shows you the local file system associated with the instance and any shared storage libraries mounted by Ops Center. More detailed information about file system storage is available under the Analytics tab under the sub-tab named Charts. Here, you can select and display the individual mount points of an OS, and export the utilization data if desired: In this example, the OS instance has a basic root file partition and several NFS directories. Each file system mount point can be independently chosen for display in the Ops Center chart. File Systems and Incident  Reporting Every asset managed by Ops Center has a "monitoring policy", which determines what represents a reportable issue with the asset. The policy is made up of a bunch of monitoring rules, where each rule describes An attribute to monitor The conditions which represent an issue The level or levels of severity for the issue When the conditions are met, Ops Center sends a notification and creates an incident. By default, OS instances have three monitoring rules associated with file systems: File System Reachability: Triggers an incident if a file system is not reachable NAS Library Status: Triggers an incident for a value of "WARNING" or "DEGRADED" for a NAS-based file system File System Used Space Percentage: Triggers an incident when file system utilization grows beyond defined thresholds You can view these rules in the Monitoring tab for an OS: Of course, the default monitoring rules is that they apply to every file system associated with an OS instance. As a result, any issue with NAS accessibility or disk utilization will trigger an incident. This can cause incidents for file systems to be reported multiple times if the same shared storage is used by many assets, as shown in this screen shot: Depending on the level of control you'd like, there are a number of ways to fine tune incident reporting. Note that any changes to an asset's monitoring policy will detach it from the default, creating a new monitoring policy for the asset. If you'd like, you can extract a monitoring policy from an asset, which allows you to save it and apply the customized monitoring profile to other OS assets. Solution #1: Modify the Reporting Thresholds In some cases, you may want to modify the basic conditions for incident reporting in your file system. The changes you make to a default monitoring rule will apply to all of the file systems associated with your operating system. Selecting the File Systems Used Space Percentage entry and clicking the "Edit Alert Monitoring Rule Parameters" button opens a pop-up dialog which allows you to modify the rule. The first screen lets you decide when you will check for file system usage, and how long you will wait before opening an incident in Ops Center. By default, Ops Center monitors continuously and reports disk utilization issues which exist for more than 15 minutes. The second screen lets you define actual threshold values. By default, Ops Center opens a Warning level incident is utilization rises above 80%, and a Critical level incident for utilization above 95% Solution #2: Disable Incident Reporting for File System If you'd rather not report file system incidents, you can disable the monitoring rules altogether. In this case, you can select the monitoring rules and click the "Disable Alert Monitoring Rule(s)" button to open the pop-up confirmation dialog. Like the first solution, this option affects all file system monitoring. It allows you to completely disable incident reporting for NAS library status or file system space consumption. Solution #3: Create New Monitoring Rules for Specific File Systems If you'd like to have the greatest flexibility when monitoring file systems, you can create entirely new rules. Clicking the "Add Alert Monitoring Rule" (the icon with the green plus sign) opens a wizard which allows you to define a new rule.  This rule will be based on a threshold, and will be used to monitor operating system assets. We'd like to add a rule to track disk utilization for a specific file system - the /nfs-guest directory. To do this, we specify the following attribute FileSystemUsages.name=/nfs-guest.usedSpacePercentage The value of name in the attribute allows us to define a specific NFS shared directory or file system... in the case of this OS, we could have chosen any of the values shown in the File Systems Utilization chart at the beginning of this article. usedSpacePercentage lets us define a threshold based on the percentage of total disk space used. There are a number of other values that we could use for threshold-based monitoring of FileSystemUsages, including freeSpace freeSpacePercentage totalSpace usedSpace usedSpacePercentage The final sections of the screen allow us to determine when to monitor for disk usage, and how long to wait after utilization reaches a threshold before creating an incident. The next screen lets us define the threshold values and severity levels for the monitoring rule: If historical data is available, Ops Center will display it in the screen. Clicking the Apply button will create the new monitoring rule and active it in your monitoring policy. If you combine this with one of the previous solutions, you can precisely define which file systems will generate incidents and notifications. For example, this monitoring policy has the default "File System Used Space Percentage" rule disabled, but the new rule reports ONLY on utilization for the /nfs-guest directory. • OS Analytics - Deep Dive Into Your OS

    - by Eran_Steiner
Enterprise Manager Ops Center provides a feature called "OS Analytics". This feature allows you to get a better understanding of how the Operating System is being utilized. You can research the historical usage as well as real time data. This post will show how you can benefit from OS Analytics and how it works behind the scenes. We will have a call to discuss this blog - please join us!Date: Thursday, November 1, 2012Time: 11:00 am, Eastern Daylight Time (New York, GMT-04:00)1. If a password is required, enter the meeting password: oracle1234. Click "Join". You can see the CPU utilization, Memory utilization and Network utilization, along with the current real time top 5 processes in each category (click the image to see a larger version):  In the above screen, you can click each of the top 5 processes to see a more detailed view of that process. Here is an example of one of the processes: One of the cool things is that you can see the process tree for this process along with some port binding and open file descriptors. On Solaris machines with zones, you get an extra level of tabs, allowing you to get more information on the different zones: This is a good way to see the busiest zones. For example, one zone may not take a lot of CPU but it can consume a lot of memory, or perhaps network bandwidth. To see the detailed Analytics for each of the zones, simply click each of the zones in the tree and go to its Analytics tab. Next, click the "Processes" tab to see real time information of all the processes on the machine: An interesting column is the "Target" column. If you configured Ops Center to work with Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, then the two products will talk to each other and Ops Center will display the correlated target from Cloud Control in this table. If you are only using Ops Center - this column will remain empty. Next, if you view a Solaris machine, you will have a "Services" tab: By default, all services will be displayed, but you can choose to display only certain states, for example, those in maintenance or the degraded ones. You can highlight a service and choose to view the details, where you can see the Dependencies, Dependents and also the location of the service log file (not shown in the picture as you need to scroll down to see the log file). The "Threshold" tab is particularly helpful - you can view historical trends of different monitored values and based on the graph - determine what the monitoring values should be: You can ask Ops Center to suggest monitoring levels based on the historical values or you can set your own. The different colors in the graph represent the current set levels: Red for critical, Yellow for warning and Blue for Information, allowing you to quickly see how they're positioned against real data. It's important to note that when looking at longer periods, Ops Center smooths out the data and uses averages. So when looking at values such as CPU Usage, try shorter time frames which are more detailed, such as one hour or one day. Applying new monitoring values When first applying new values to monitored attributes - a popup will come up asking if it's OK to get you out of the current Monitoring Policy. This is OK if you want to either have custom monitoring for a specific machine, or if you want to use this current machine as a "Gold image" and extract a Monitoring Policy from it. You can later apply the new Monitoring Policy to other machines and also set it as a default Monitoring Profile. Once you're done with applying the different monitoring values, you can review and change them in the "Monitoring" tab. You can also click the "Extract a Monitoring Policy" in the actions pane on the right to save all the new values to a new Monitoring Policy, which can then be found under "Plan Management" -> "Monitoring Policies". Visiting the past Under the "History" tab you can "go back in time". This is very helpful when you know that a machine was busy a few hours ago (perhaps in the middle of the night?), but you were not around to take a look at it in real time. Here's a view into yesterday's data on one of the machines: You can see an interesting CPU spike happening at around 3:30 am along with some memory use. In the bottom table you can see the top 5 CPU and Memory consumers at the requested time. Very quickly you can see that this spike is related to the Solaris 11 IPS repository synchronization process using the "pkgrecv" command. The "time machine" doesn't stop here - you can also view historical data to determine which of the zones was the busiest at a given time: Under the hood The data collected is stored on each of the agents under /var/opt/sun/xvm/analytics/historical/ An "os.zip" file exists for the main OS. Inside you will find many small text files, named after the Epoch time stamp in which they were taken If you have any zones, there will be a file called "guests.zip" containing the same small files for all the zones, as well as a folder with the name of the zone along with "os.zip" in it If this is the Enterprise Controller or the Proxy Controller, you will have folders called "proxy" and "sat" in which you will find the "os.zip" for that controller The actual script collecting the data can be viewed for debugging purposes as well: On Linux, the location is: /opt/sun/xvmoc/private/os_analytics/collect On Solaris, the location is /opt/SUNWxvmoc/private/os_analytics/collect If you would like to redirect all the standard error into a file for debugging, touch the following file and the output will go into it: # touch /tmp/.collect.stderr   The temporary data is collected under /var/opt/sun/xvm/analytics/.collectdb until it is zipped. If you would like to review the properties for the Analytics, you can view those per each agent in /opt/sun/n1gc/lib/XVM.properties. Find the section "Analytics configurable properties for OS and VSC" to view the Analytics specific values. I hope you find this helpful! Please post questions in the comments below. Eran Steiner

  • WCF .svc Accessible Over HTTP But Accessing WSDL Causes "Connection Was Reset"

    - by Wolfwyrd
I have a WCF service which is hosted on IIS6 on a Win2003 SP2 machine. The WCF service is hosting correctly and is visible over HTTP giving the usual "To test this service, you will need to create a client and use it to call the service" message. However accessing the .svc?WSDL link causes the connection to be reset. The server itself is returning a 200 in the logs for the WSDL request, an example of which is shown here, the first call gets a connection reset, the second is a successful call for the .svc file. 2010-04-09 11:00:21 W3SVC6 MACHINENAME 10.79.42.115 GET /IntegrationService.svc wsdl 80 - 10.75.33.71 HTTP/1.1 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+7.0;+Windows+NT+5.1;+.NET+CLR+2.0.50727;+.NET+CLR+1.1.4322;+.NET+CLR+1.0.3705;+InfoPath.1;+.NET+CLR+3.0.04506.30;+MS-RTC+LM+8;+.NET+CLR+3.0.4506.2152;+.NET+CLR+3.5.30729;) - - devsitename.mydevdomain.com 200 0 0 0 696 3827 2010-04-09 11:04:10 W3SVC6 MACHINENAME 10.79.42.115 GET /IntegrationService.svc - 80 - 10.75.33.71 HTTP/1.1 Mozilla/5.0+(Windows;+U;+Windows+NT+5.1;+en-GB;+rv:1.9.1.9)+Gecko/20100315+Firefox/3.5.9+(.NET+CLR+3.5.30729) - - devsitename.mydevdomain.com 200 0 0 3144 457 265 My Web.Config looks like: <system.serviceModel> <serviceHostingEnvironment > <baseAddressPrefixFilters> <add prefix="http://devsitename.mydevdomain.com" /> </baseAddressPrefixFilters> </serviceHostingEnvironment> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="My.Service.IntegrationServiceBehavior"> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true" /> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="false" /> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <services> <service behaviorConfiguration="My.Service.IntegrationServiceBehavior" name="My.Service.IntegrationService"> <endpoint address="" binding="wsHttpBinding" contract="My.Service.Interfaces.IIntegrationService" bindingConfiguration="NoSecurityConfig" /> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> </service> </services> <bindings> <wsHttpBinding> <binding name="NoSecurityConfig"> <security mode="None" /> </binding> </wsHttpBinding> </bindings> </system.serviceModel> I'm pretty much stumped by this one. It works fine through the local dev server in VS2008 but fails after deployment. For further information, the targeted machine does not have a firewall (it's on the internal network) and the logs show the site thinks it's fine with 200 OK responses. I've also tried updating the endpoint with the full URL to my service however it still makes no difference. I have looked into some of the other options - creating a separate WSDL manually and exposing it through the metadata properties (really don't want to do that due to the maintenance issues). If anyone can offer any thoughts on this or any other workarounds it would be greatly appreciated.

  • retrieving value from database in java

    - by Akcire Atienza
I am making AGAIN another program that retrieves the inputted data/values of fields from the database I created. but this time, my inputted value will be coming from the JtextField I created. I wonder what's wrong in here bec when I'm running it the output is always null. in this program i will convert the inputted value of my JTextField into int. here it is: public class ButtonHandler implements ActionListener { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { if(e.getSource() == extendB) { ExtensionForm extend = new ExtensionForm(); extend.setVisible(true); } else if(e.getSource()== searchB) { //get text from the textField String guest = guestIDTF.getText(); //parse the string to integer for retrieving of data int id = Integer.parseInt(guest); GuestsInfo guestInfo = new GuestsInfo(id); Room roomInfo = new Room(id); String labels[] = {guestInfo.getFirstName()+" "+guestInfo.getLastName(),""+roomInfo.getRoomNo(),roomInfo.getRoomType(),guestInfo.getTime(),"11:00"}; for(int z = 0; z<labels.length; z++) { labelDisplay[z].setText(labels[z]); } in my second class it retrieves the inputted values of fields from the database I created here's the code: import java.sql.*; public class Room { private String roomType; private int guestID, roomNo; private Connection con; private PreparedStatement statement; public Room(){ try { Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"); con = DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/3moronsdb","root",""); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public Room(int guestsID) { this(); try{ statement = con.prepareStatement("SELECT * FROM guest WHERE guestID=?"); statement.setInt(1, guestID); ResultSet rs = statement.executeQuery(); while(rs.next()){ this.guestID = rs.getInt(1); this.roomType = rs.getString(2); this.roomNo = rs.getInt(3); } }catch(Exception e){ System.out.print(e); } } //Constructor for setting rate public Room(String roomType, int roomNo) { this(); try { statement = con.prepareStatement("Insert into room(roomType, roomNo) values(?,?)"); statement.setString(1, roomType); statement.setInt(2, roomNo); statement.executeUpdate(); } catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); return; } } //getting roomType public String getRoomType(){ return roomType; } //getting roomNo public int getRoomNo(){ return roomNo; } //getting guestID public int getGuestId(){ return guestID; } } i already insert some values in my 3moronsdb which are ( 1, Classic , 103). here's my TEST main class: public class TestMain { public static void main(String [] a){ GuestsInfo guest = new GuestsInfo(1); //note that this instantiation is the other class which i just ask the other day.. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12762835/retrieving-values-from-database-in-java) Room rum = new Room(1); System.out.print(rum.getRoomType()+" "+ guest.getFirstName()); } } when i'm running it it only gives me null output for the Room class but i am getting the output of the GuestsInfo class which is 'Ericka'. Can you help me guys? I know I ask this kind of problem yesterday but i really don't know what's wrong in here now..

  • Time Warp

    - by Jesse
It’s no secret that daylight savings time can wreak havoc on systems that rely heavily on dates. The system I work on is centered around recording dates and times, so naturally my co-workers and I have seen our fair share of date-related bugs. From time to time, however, we come across something that we haven’t seen before. A few weeks ago the following error message started showing up in our logs: “The supplied DateTime represents an invalid time. For example, when the clock is adjusted forward, any time in the period that is skipped is invalid.” This seemed very cryptic, especially since it was coming from areas of our application that are typically only concerned with capturing date-only (no explicit time component) from the user, like reports that take a “start date” and “end date” parameter. For these types of parameters we just leave off the time component when capturing the date values, so midnight is used as a “placeholder” time. How is midnight an “invalid time”? Globalization Is Hard Over the last couple of years our software has been rolled out to users in several countries outside of the United States, including Brazil. Brazil begins and ends daylight savings time at midnight on pre-determined days of the year. On October 16, 2011 at midnight many areas in Brazil began observing daylight savings time at which time their clocks were set forward one hour. This means that at the instant it became midnight on October 16, it actually became 1:00 AM, so any time between 12:00 AM and 12:59:59 AM never actually happened. Because we store all date values in the database in UTC, always adjust any “local” dates provided by a user to UTC before using them as filters in a query. The error we saw was thrown by .NET when trying to convert the Brazilian local time of 2011-10-16 12:00 AM to UTC since that local time never actually existed. We hadn’t experienced this same issue with any of our US customers because the daylight savings time changes in the US occur at 2:00 AM which doesn’t conflict with our “placeholder” time of midnight. Detecting Invalid Times In .NET you might use code similar to the following for converting a local time to UTC: var localDate = new DateTime(2011, 10, 16); //2011-10-16 @ midnight const string timeZoneId = "E. South America Standard Time"; //Windows system timezone Id for "Brasilia" timezone. var localTimeZone = TimeZoneInfo.FindSystemTimeZoneById(timeZoneId); var convertedDate = TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTimeToUtc(localDate, localTimeZone); The code above throws the “invalid time” exception referenced above. We could try to detect whether or not the local time is invalid with something like this: var localDate = new DateTime(2011, 10, 16); //2011-10-16 @ midnight const string timeZoneId = "E. South America Standard Time"; //Windows system timezone Id for "Brasilia" timezone. var localTimeZone = TimeZoneInfo.FindSystemTimeZoneById(timeZoneId); if (localTimeZone.IsInvalidTime(localDate)) localDate = localDate.AddHours(1); var convertedDate = TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTimeToUtc(localDate, localTimeZone); This code works in this particular scenario, but it hardly seems robust. It also does nothing to address the issue that can arise when dealing with the ambiguous times that fall around the end of daylight savings. When we roll the clocks back an hour they record the same hour on the same day twice in a row. To continue on with our Brazil example, on February 19, 2012 at 12:00 AM, it will immediately become February 18, 2012 at 11:00 PM all over again. In this scenario, how should we interpret February 18, 2011 11:30 PM? Enter Noda Time I heard about Noda Time, the .NET port of the Java library Joda Time, a little while back and filed it away in the back of my mind under the “sounds-like-it-might-be-useful-someday” category.  Let’s see how we might deal with the issue of invalid and ambiguous local times using Noda Time (note that as of this writing the samples below will only work using the latest code available from the Noda Time repo on Google Code. The NuGet package version 0.1.0 published 2011-08-19 will incorrectly report unambiguous times as being ambiguous) : var localDateTime = new LocalDateTime(2011, 10, 16, 0, 0); const string timeZoneId = "Brazil/East"; var timezone = DateTimeZone.ForId(timeZoneId); var localDateTimeMaping = timezone.MapLocalDateTime(localDateTime); ZonedDateTime unambiguousLocalDateTime; switch (localDateTimeMaping.Type) { case ZoneLocalMapping.ResultType.Unambiguous: unambiguousLocalDateTime = localDateTimeMaping.UnambiguousMapping; break; case ZoneLocalMapping.ResultType.Ambiguous: unambiguousLocalDateTime = localDateTimeMaping.EarlierMapping; break; case ZoneLocalMapping.ResultType.Skipped: unambiguousLocalDateTime = new ZonedDateTime( localDateTimeMaping.ZoneIntervalAfterTransition.Start, timezone); break; default: throw new InvalidOperationException(string.Format("Unexpected mapping result type: {0}", localDateTimeMaping.Type)); } var convertedDateTime = unambiguousLocalDateTime.ToInstant().ToDateTimeUtc(); Let’s break this sample down: I’m using the Noda Time ‘LocalDateTime’ object to represent the local date and time. I’ve provided the year, month, day, hour, and minute (zeros for the hour and minute here represent midnight). You can think of a ‘LocalDateTime’ as an “invalidated” date and time; there is no information available about the time zone that this date and time belong to, so Noda Time can’t make any guarantees about its ambiguity. The ‘timeZoneId’ in this sample is different than the ones above. In order to use the .NET TimeZoneInfo class we need to provide Windows time zone ids. Noda Time expects an Olson (tz / zoneinfo) time zone identifier and does not currently offer any means of mapping the Windows time zones to their Olson counterparts, though project owner Jon Skeet has said that some sort of mapping will be publicly accessible at some point in the future. I’m making use of the Noda Time ‘DateTimeZone.MapLocalDateTime’ method to disambiguate the original local date time value. This method returns an instance of the Noda Time object ‘ZoneLocalMapping’ containing information about the provided local date time maps to the provided time zone.  The disambiguated local date and time value will be stored in the ‘unambiguousLocalDateTime’ variable as an instance of the Noda Time ‘ZonedDateTime’ object. An instance of this object represents a completely unambiguous point in time and is comprised of a local date and time, a time zone, and an offset from UTC. Instances of ZonedDateTime can only be created from within the Noda Time assembly (the constructor is ‘internal’) to ensure to callers that each instance represents an unambiguous point in time. The value of the ‘unambiguousLocalDateTime’ might vary depending upon the ‘ResultType’ returned by the ‘MapLocalDateTime’ method. There are three possible outcomes: If the provided local date time is unambiguous in the provided time zone I can immediately set the ‘unambiguousLocalDateTime’ variable from the ‘Unambiguous Mapping’ property of the mapping returned by the ‘MapLocalDateTime’ method. If the provided local date time is ambiguous in the provided time zone (i.e. it falls in an hour that was repeated when moving clocks backward from Daylight Savings to Standard Time), I can use the ‘EarlierMapping’ property to get the earlier of the two possible local dates to define the unambiguous local date and time that I need. I could have also opted to use the ‘LaterMapping’ property in this case, or even returned an error and asked the user to specify the proper choice. The important thing to note here is that as the programmer I’ve been forced to deal with what appears to be an ambiguous date and time. If the provided local date time represents a skipped time (i.e. it falls in an hour that was skipped when moving clocks forward from Standard Time to Daylight Savings Time),  I have access to the time intervals that fell immediately before and immediately after the point in time that caused my date to be skipped. In this case I have opted to disambiguate my local date and time by moving it forward to the beginning of the interval immediately following the skipped period. Again, I could opt to use the end of the interval immediately preceding the skipped period, or raise an error depending on the needs of the application. The point of this code is to convert a local date and time to a UTC date and time for use in a SQL Server database, so the final ‘convertedDate’  variable (typed as a plain old .NET DateTime) has its value set from a Noda Time ‘Instant’. An 'Instant’ represents a number of ticks since 1970-01-01 at midnight (Unix epoch) and can easily be converted to a .NET DateTime in the UTC time zone using the ‘ToDateTimeUtc()’ method. This sample is admittedly contrived and could certainly use some refactoring, but I think it captures the general approach needed to take a local date and time and convert it to UTC with Noda Time. At first glance it might seem that Noda Time makes this “simple” code more complicated and verbose because it forces you to explicitly deal with the local date disambiguation, but I feel that the length and complexity of the Noda Time sample is proportionate to the complexity of the problem. Using TimeZoneInfo leaves you susceptible to overlooking ambiguous and skipped times that could result in run-time errors or (even worse) run-time data corruption in the form of a local date and time being adjusted to UTC incorrectly. I should point out that this research is my first look at Noda Time and I know that I’ve only scratched the surface of its full capabilities. I also think it’s safe to say that it’s still beta software for the time being so I’m not rushing out to use it production systems just yet, but I will definitely be tinkering with it more and keeping an eye on it as it progresses.

  • Server randomly freezes

    - by PsySkeletor
Im facing a very strange issue, my debian squeeze freezes up always at night (Berlin, time). Here is what i get from a time and after doing this a few times, it becomes frozen and must be hard-reset. But its strange that the message not able to connect to the server is not coming and its keep connecting... for infinite time. Here is the screenshot. • How can I create a weekly calendar view for an Android Honeycomb application?

    - by BVB
I am working on an Android (v3.0) application that has a requirement of mimicking the weekly calendar layout found on Google Calendar: The events will be based on external requests through the Google Calendar API (I already have this part working). Using the API, I can obtain a list of events for the week, with each event having a starting and and ending datetime. I would like to use this data to show the scheduled events to the application's users in a view similar to the one above. Here's what I have so far: The XML appears below: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="800dp" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:orientation="vertical" > <TextView android:id="@+id/textView1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Calendar Title" android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" /> <RelativeLayout android:id="@+id/relativeLayout1" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" > <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/linearLayout1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentLeft="true" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" > <TextView android:id="@+id/textView2" android:layout_width="0dp" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="180dp" android:layout_marginTop="340dp" android:text="Some Event" /> </RelativeLayout> </LinearLayout> </RelativeLayout> </LinearLayout> </RelativeLayout> </ScrollView> </LinearLayout> My approach was to make 40dp equal to 1 hr of time. Thus, whenever I would like to add an event that has a duration of 1.5 hours, I will make an 60dp button that I will place at the exact location that the time begins (12am = 0dp from the top, 1pm = 40dp from the top, 2pm = 80d from the top, etc). My questions are: Is there a better way of doing this? How can I convert my XML to be stand-alone view that could be added to any Android project? (I plan on perhaps making a blog post about the end product) Thank you!
