    Looking at running pfSense on an old P3 866Mhz. It's noisy, I'd like to passively-cool it, downclocking is ok as this is more than enough horsepower for my needs at home. Obviously I'm cheaping out here: wonder if I bigger heatsink will do and how much case flow I need (it's in a standard mid-tower ATX case).

  • compile Passenger statically into Apache httpd?

    I prefer to disable httpd dynamic module loading on my production server. I've been using mod_jk linked statically into httpd for quite a long time and it proved to be stable. Now I would like to add Ruby Passenger (mod_rails/mod_rack) to my httpd. I wonder if it is possible to link it statically into Apache httpd the same way too? (without producing a huge httpd) If it is, are there any potential pitfalls, safety or performance concerns having both mod_jk and mod_rails within the same executable? Thanks

    Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10sek. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessarry boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sek I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program? Thanks

I am setting up a BizTalk 2009 Server production environment and I wonder if this tutorial: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc558972(BTS.10).aspx is still fairly accurate for an installation on all the latest platform software (Hyper-V, Windows Server 2008, BizTalk Server 2009, SQL Server 2008)?     I have one monitor and a projector connecting to my computer, while the screen keep flashing after every 10 seconds, it seems the resolution keeps changing. The project is the a dual display for the monitor. They displays the same content. My current resolution is 1024*768, while after 10 seconds around, the resolution goes to something big, then after a few seconds, it goes back to 1024*768. I wonder if this is a problem about the resolution, or it's about the compatible of screen display?

    I have a Dell Vostro 1000 which uses ATI RS480 mainboard. Specification says that the front bus of such mainboard is 1Ghz. However, the default RAM came with mainboard is PC4200 (533Mhz). I wonder if I can replace them with PC6400 (800Mhz) or at least PC5300 (667Mhz)?

    I bought an used CPU (Intel "Core 2" E4700) on eBay and it came with the underside dirty with something that seems it´s thermal paste. Before I send it back, I wonder if it could it still work without cleaning this dirt because the seller supposedly "tested" it to be fully working.     Hi, I wonder if the following things can be done with the HTML notes pane of freemind: Is it possible on the layout view to decrease the separation between lines? The panel is horizontal, is it possible to setup a vertical view? (I have a big, horizontal-like monitor) By the way, when I move the mouse pointer over a node, i can see the HTLM note associated with it, but its view (as a yellow square) only lasts for some seconds.     Looking to install php on a 08 box already holding iis/sql box. I've tried the webinstaller a couple times but the installer locks before completion or managing to echo any sort of error message. Before hunting down a manual install how-to i wonder if the box is trying to tell me something i should be paying attention to. PHP running alongside IIS _must be supported or one would expect that error message to be kinda high on the list. any gochas to beware of? thx

  • Is it possible that solid state drives (or any faster drive) will make common applications faster even if they are cached?

    I assumed that solid state drives are insignificant after, say, Firefox is fully brought up and no important disk activity after that is going on. However, I wonder if some kind of 'cached from the disk to the CPU' activity is going on that may make solid state drives (or any faster drive) better. Then again, I suspect that may be depended only on the Bus (or some kind of cache memory drives have). Hrm..
