• Multi-monitor setup: one widescreen monitor, one regular (4:3) monitor; is this usually possible?

  I'm trying to find out whether it's generally possible to have a multi-monitor setup with both a widescreen monitor and a regular monitor (ie. one with a 4:3 picture ratio). I'd like to run them in Extended Desktop mode on a Windows Vista machine. The computer is a Dell notebook with an onboard Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset. While I know that this notebook is capable of driving multiple monitors, I don't know if it is also able to drive monitors with varying resolutions. Does anyone know if differing screen resolutions is generally a problem?

• Touchpad button assignments don't persist with Lenovo T400 on WinXP

  I have a Lenovo T400 notebook with Windows XP on it. I usually use the TrackPoint, and almost never use the TouchPad. I do a look of work on Linux over VNC, in my setup the middle mouse button is mapped to "paste". Considering that the notebook doesn't really have a middle button (it's only a scrolling button) I mapped the unused left button of the TouchPad to be a middle button. However, when I send the computer to Standby and bring it out, the left button reverts to being a left button, not a middle one. How can I make sure that the mapping persists?

• What is a good custom MAC address? [closed]

  My new notebook has been dropping the WiFi connection infrequently. The reason was, that my PS3 had the same MAC address. I changed the MAC address of my notebook and the WiFi is now stable. At first I just reduced the address' last block by 1, which happened to be the MAC address of another device. I reduced it again and for now it's fine. In order to avoid conflicts in the future, is there an address range that is safe to use for custom/non-vendor MAC addresses?

• Unable to boot from SATA II and vista

  Trying to use a SATA II hard drive on toshiba satellite notebook. The hard drive has vista installed on it from another notebook. After inserting the hard drive, the boot starts.. shows "Microsoft windows" the progress bar, and reboots, in a loop. The existing hard drive is SATA with xp on it. The replacement one is SATA II with vista on it. I wanna troubleshoot. But, don't know where to start. Any help is much appreciated!!

• Does a Samsung G3 Station external hard drive stop working when power supply is too high?

  I have a Samsung G3 Station 2TB external hard drive (link to PDF specs here). It was working perfectly when I accidentally plugged it in my notebook's power source. The notebook's power source is 19V/3.42A. The hard drive's is 12V/2A and I know that, inside its case, there is regular 2TB SATA drive, along with some sort of adapter. Does this adapter has some kind of power protection? I opened the case and the hard drive board smells bad. Does my data is forever lost or can I replace its board?

• Secondary Monitor won't Display at Full Resolution with Primary Display Disconnected

  I have had a bad day. Among today's events, the LCD display on my Dell E6500 notebook failed. It had been working with a secondary monitor connected through a VGA cable at 1600x900 resolution until I removed the LCD from my notebook for repair. Now the max resolution available on the secondary display is 1024x768. If I reconnect the burned out primary display, the secondary monitor is again available at 1600x900. The video card is an onboard Mobil Intel 4. How can I maintain the secondary display at 1600x900 with the primary display disconnected (for repair)? Edit: I just noticed that when Windows boots, it displays at the correct resolution and I can see my desktop in all its glory for a couple seconds then reverts to 1024x768.

• Increase performance of Samsung 830 256GB SSD

  I have a Samsung 830 SSD in my notebook connected to a SATA interface. This is a rather old HP notebook nc8430 which means SATA is SATA I and not II or even III that disk supports. But SATA I still supports speeds up to 150MB/s so I expected at least double values as per image below. CrystalDiskMark shows rather slow performance: I've been using this SSD for over a year now and I would like to know what to do to make it blazingly fast as other reports say it should be? • In general, do 3rd-party laptop AC adapters / chargers work reliably?

  The AC adapters for my 2 dell laptops wore out very quickly. One supplies power but won't charge the battery (it's about 3 years old, the other is a bit newer). Both have worn through to the shielding around the notebook connector and look like they'll be unusable soon. Checking user reviews of the replacement adapter on Dell's own website, it appears they usually fail this fast. Apparently Dell does this deliberately to make money (their adapters sell for about 10-15 times what they cost to make). Same with replacement batteries. I can see there are plenty of much cheaper ($50 less) compatible AC adapters on eBay. Does anyone have experience with these? Naturally I'm nervous a crappy knock-off could fry my notebook, but has this ever actually happened to anyone recently? Has anyone had a good experience? Can anyone recommend a good online seller (who doesn't charge nonsensical shipping costs to Australia, preferably?)

• Why is the server performance so poor? What can be done to improve the speed of the server?

  Very slow processing using Windows Server2008 R2 Standard with Service Pack One. Situation: Read a text file using the text data to populate a series of MS Sql tables. The converted data is used to generate monthly PDF invoice files; the PDF files are saved directly to the hard drive. The application is multi-threading with one thread used for the text conversion and three threads for PDF invoice generation. The text conversion is occurring concurrently with the invoice generation. Application Software: C# using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. Crystal Report Writer 2011 with runtime 13_0_3 64 bit version. Targeted platform is x64; also tested as x86, and Any CPU with similar results. Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. Microsoft Sql 2008 Issue: The software is running very slowly. The conversion of the text file is approximately six hundred fifty records per second and generation of the PDF files is approximately twelve invoices per minute. The text file to be converted is six hundred Meg with seven thousand invoices to be generated. The software was installed on three different machines from the same distribution files. The same text file was converted on each machine. The user executing the application was an administrator on each machine. The only variances were the machine and operating system. • Why can't connect with second computer in same LAN and settings?

  I'm trying to connect to WLAN with notebook. The notebook works fine with other WLANs. It can authenticate, signal is "very good" but it says "can't access internet". (On Windows it's small yellow exclamation mark on the signal). With other computer exactly in the same location, with the same settings, it's possible to connect. Both are configurated to get IP dynamically. One difference is that the other computer is using "Ralink wireless" instead normal windows client to connect. But does this make a difference? the settings are the same. What could be the reason?

• What did Emolator do with My Laptop?

  I played SEGA with my KEGA.exe (Sega Emulator) and it made my right key to be malfunctioned. Befor that day, I had played it, too in my notebook with fullscreen mode, and suddenly my ACER Aspire One notebook restarted during that emulator was running and before the screen was black (boot), my screen was blue with many words but I couldn't read them, but I remember that there was a word like 000000 x 0000000 x 000000 and bla bla bla. And when I played without fullscreen mode, It didn't happened but it made my right key to be malfunctioned until when I went to Bot setup, my right key doesn't work. Do U know what is the problem of my emulator? Can U explain me for that?

• Disadvantages of enabling AHCI after Win7 install

  I've formatted my notebook that has a 5400RPM HDD with ~500GB capacity. After installing Windows 7 and about half the drivers (including chipset) I began to doubt whether to go for IDE or AHCI mode for my hard drive. There used to be a lot of discussion on the internet which is better and so far I understood it was particularly helpful on SSDs. Now the general consensus seems to be that AHCI mode is best for most hard drives. I have thus enabled AHCI in the middle of configuring my notebook (rest of the drivers, necessary software etc...) Two questions: considering my HDD's spec above, should I leave it on? Is there any disadvantage of enabling it after Windows 7 and chipset drivers installation? Windows 7 version is 64 bit Home Premium.

  I'm diagnosing some issue with Oracle virtual box where virtual machine sometimes perform terribly slow (much slower then notebook with worse configuration): Notebook i7 (2 cores with HT = 4 logical CPUs), 4GB RAM, 5400 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit Virtual machine (Oracle Virtual Box) Host: i7 (4 cores with HT = 8 logical CPUs, 12 GB RAM, system runs from SSD, virtual machine from 7200 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit) Virtual machine: 4 cores assigned, 8 GB RAM assigned, Win 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) Virtual machine uses bridge to separate network interface (machine has two) VPN for network communication No other virtual machine runs on the host Host has installed ESET Smart Security All SW is updated with last version. My question is if anti-virus on the host machine can somehow affect performance of the virtual machine and if so how can I turn it off without turning the anti-virus itself?

• How to change hybrid disk to basic disk in windows 7?

  I created a partition E and then deleted the partition. After that I extended my partition C (where OS was installed) to take the space. My partition C became hybrid drive. My hp notebook does not have DVD rom and the notebook only came with an recovery image (I also have a paragon disc image). My computer has some problems now and I want to recover it by either the factory format or the paragon disc image. However, none of them works. I know it is because my disc has become hybrid disk. My question is how to fix the dynamic disk problem?

  I have router Draytek Vigor 2100VG at home almost in the center of it. The farthest point at my home is my balcony, ~12m from it. I have constant wifi signal range problems with some of my devices, but not with others. Notebook Lenovo W510 - no problems Nokia Home Music - always on 10m - no problems Sony PS3 - always on 7m - no problems Sony tablet S - problems around 6m Sony PSP - problems around 8m Sony PS Vita - problems around 8m Nokia E63 - problems around 8m I'm curious why my Notebook don't have any problems even on the balcony? I guess it has better hardware or uses more power for transmission. This information is really important when you want to buy new device/computer, so my real question is: Can device wifi range can somehow be found/suggested from official hardware technical specification? If not Is there some web page with wifi range reviews?

• TrueCrypt with blank password

  This might sound like an odd question, but please hear me out. I want to setup my laptop to use TrueCrypt, but without a password. My wife doesn't travel much with her notebook. There are occasions where we will have to travel and bring the notebook with us. This is when we would like the have the encryption. The time it takes to to change the unlock pass-phrase is considerably less than it takes to encrypt the drive. My thoughts are to leave the disk encrypted but with no password. Then when it's time to pack for a trip and bring the laptop, we would then change the pass-phrase and create a rescue disk.

• WordPress and EverNote integration, any existing solutions?

  Actually the tag and category system in WordPress and EverNote are very similar, almost exactly the same. We can create a notebook/notebook group in EverNote, its counterpart in Wordpress is Category/Sub Category We can mutiple tag any note in EverNote, similarly we can tag any post in Wordpress as well! Since the two are so similar to each other in categorizing the article, I am wondering whether there is a existing solution to automatically convert between the two. Like one click to post my EverNote note to WordPress under the same category and same tag. Or pull down my WordPress article to my EverNote account under the same category and same tag. • How to increase the volume gain when viewing online flash video?

  When watching online Flash videos on Youtube, Dailymotion, etc... sometimes the videos are recorded at low volume. The thing is that, I have a HP Notebook with good enough audio volume, but when I watch these "low volume" videos the sound level is really low, even when I have the volume at 100%. So I am looking for a way to increase the volume gain (like VLC player where you can increase it to 200%), BUT while watching it live on Youtube... that is, I don't want to download the video on my PC. Is there a software that can do that? Maybe an advanced flash video player that integrates to browser? or some other software to increase the volume gain overall on my laptop? • Windows 7 unidentified network (or limited access) after hibernate.

  My windows 7 network will show limited access or unidentified network after coming up from hibernation. In the office I normally use LAN connection, I turn-off my wireless card (DELL Latitude has on/off switch for the wireless card). When I back at home I will turn on the wireless card, but it will take about 15 seconds to detect my home WIFI and then show limited access. I will have to restart the notebook and it will be able to connect to my WIFI and internet. The problem will be solved if I restart the notebook, but that defeats the purpose of hibernation doesn't it? I have tried uninstalling the wireless card driver but still does not solve it. I also tried updating my network card driver but windows says I am using the latest driver. On support.dell.com also showing I am using the latest driver.

• New Kingson SSD drive fails after 1 week

  I upgraded the hard disk in my notebook to a 128GB Kingston SSD V100. Everything worked fine for about a week then out of the blue the notebook would not boot up any more. A black dos-like screen was shown with the options to try and boot normally or attempt to repair windows. Neither option would do anything. When I removed the drive and tested it in an external usb case no other computers are able to access the drive either. Is there anything I can try to fix it myself? The drive is partitioned into three drives and when it's connected through an external usb case to another computer I can see the partitions, just can't access anything on them. Does this mean the drive might be recoverable?

• How to make sysctl network bridge settings persist after a reboot?

  I am setting up a notebook for software demo purpose. The machine has 8GB RAM, a Core i7 Intel CPU, a 128GB SSD, and runs Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit. The notebook is used as a KVM host and runs a few KVM guests. All such guests use the virbr0 default bridge. To enable them to communicate with each other using multicast, I added the following to the host's /etc/sysctl.conf, as shown below net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 Afterwards, following man sysctl(8), I issued the following: sudo /sbin/sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf My understanding is that this should make these settings persist over reboots. I tested it, and was surprised to find out the following: root@sdn1 :/proc/sys/net/bridge# more *tables :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-arptables :::::::::::::: 1 :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-ip6tables :::::::::::::: 1 :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-iptables :::::::::::::: 1 All defaults are coming back! Yes. I can use some kludgy "get arounds" such as putting a /sbin/sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf into the host's /etc/rc.local but I would rather "do it right".
