  • Would Ubuntu support this Avell G1711?

    I just bought a gaming notebook (model G1711) from a local brand in Brazil named Avell. Its configuration is quite advanced and this is the reason for my purchase. However, all of their official support relies on Windows 7 or 8, actually. So would Ubuntu work on this machine? It is an i5 Haswell, Chipset Intel HM87, Nvidia Geforce GTX 765M, sound with THX TruStudio Pro, Blu-ray writer, US layout keybord 101/102, USB 2 and 3.0, eSata port, 9 in one memory card reader.

In particular, the issue was about how unusable the tools are on the 1366x768 resolution notebooks that now seem to be the most common.   • USB 3.0 controller is not recognized by Ubuntu 12.04

    I have a Thinkpad E430 notebook, and the intel's USB 3.0 controller can not be recognized by Ubuntu 12.04. The LED on my USB-HDD is white instead of blue (And in Windows 7, it is blue when connected to USB 3.0 port, and is white when connected to 2.0). And the transfer speed is around 25MB/s instead of 65MB/s in Windows 7. I'm not familiar with Linux systems, so I've no clue about what's going wrong. I've searched the web, but got no solution.

    I try to mount my secure webdav on my Ubuntu notebook, I've added the following to my fstab: https://[URL] /mnt/[folder] davfs user,auto,uid=wouter0100,file_mode=600,dir_mode=700 0 1 But when I run the command sudo mount -a I keep getting: /sbin/mount.davfs: Mounting failed. Server certificate verification failed: issuer is not trusted I've tried very much different things, but I couldn't get it working.. It's signed by Comodo and valid (when I load it in Chrome it's okay).

  • How do I make Ubuntu aware of plugging in and out a second monitor ?

    Usually, when I plug in a second monitor and I want my computer to be aware of it, I have to go to 'System' - 'Preferences' - 'Monitors'. Then, without clicking anywhere, my desktop knows it has to adapt itself (by cloning the screen or broadening the virtual desktop). How can I make this happen automatically ? For more information, my computer is an Acer Extensa 5636 notebook plugged to a Compaq CQ1859s monitor, using a VGA cable.

    i do have a 12.04 ubuntu on my notebook , but i do have a problem with it. I cannot boot , if i dont press anything then there is a black screen , and it does not boot. If i press the space button , or any other key , for mutlitples times , like 20 or 25 times or more then it's boot in seconds , and normally. How can i resolve this? Thanks Ps:I do not have a problem with bios as it's already booting on first for the hard drive

    I have a problem with maverick when resuming from hibernate. Here's a screenshot: Also I'm getting the following errors before the screen appears: *ERROR* render ring head not reset to zero ctl 00... *ERROR* render ring head forced to zero ctl 00000... I tried upgrading to PPA kernel to 2.5.36 and 2.5.37 beta but the problem persists. I have a vaio notebook with an intel graphics card 4500mhd. Anyone knows of a fix?

    I'm installing ubuntu 12.04 on my asus A43S notebook, but couldn't see any other partition under the 'Go' menu. I tried 'sudo fdisk -l' seems fine, it displays all partition. I also installed ubuntu 12.04 on my PC but there were no problems, all partition are listed under the 'Go' menu, and automaticly mounted when I clicked on them. question is, how to display all partition just like on my PC does, I don't want to mount via terminal each time I need to access them. thanks.

    just got HP DV6-6145dx Notebook: - AMD Quad-Core A8-3500M Accelerated Processor - 8GB DDR3 SDRAM - AMD Radeon HD 6620G well i removed every thing that related to windows " system, hidden partitions " so that i wont need them. so, i tried to install ubuntu 12.04 64bit and i got a lot of error and crashes -- gives me that ubuntu has an error "executable bath" from the beginning after boot -- other one that said ubuntu installation process crashed and some times the words converted to squares and can't continuing the installation process at all on the other hand i tried the 32bit version, and every thing went smoothly need your help thanks

  • Laptop freezes and seems to crash, but continues working after waiting for a few minutes [closed]

    I've had this old notebook laying around and because i was missing a second machine (My wife usually steals the first ;) ) I considered installing Linux. As a php developer I work with Linux servers (usually fedora) on a daily basis and because its an older machine that I want to use for development, linux seemed the best option. Speedwise I expected a good experience, better than Windows 7 on the same machine. The results where terrible. I tried ubuntu 12.04. The shell never got past showing the background. The system doesn't freeze since the mouse still works and I can use ctrl+alt+f2 etc to enter terminal mode. I expected hardware problems en even exchanged the harddisk en Ram memory. No luck though, so I started over and tried 11.10 Same results so I tried 10.04.4 which did install properly. Not sure if unity was the problem, but it seems likely. But then I tried simply things like surfing on the net, the system frooze and I thought it crashed so after a few minutes I pulled the plug and rebooted. But it happened again and I waited. After a few minutes the system came back to life like nothing happened. Long story short. Besides the fact that the entire interface is very sluggish, any and all graphical functions freezes the system. The more elaborate the animation would be, the longer it freezes. I switch chromium from window to fullscreenmode and had to wait 15 minutes to continue. I don't see the animation that's probably supposed to be in between. It just freezes and then after unfreezing its fullscreen. I don't think its a bug. I suspect the problem is with my graphics card. Like I said, its and old system. So old that I can't even find the original Ati drivers anywere. (I'll post the details of my system at the end of my post) I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I tried other Distro's. So far only dreamlinux works normally. Linux Mint won't start as a live CD. I think I simply need a driver update but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone have the same experience ?     I previously installed Ubuntu on a computer that had Windows XP on it and got it successfully to run alongside it. (access both OS systems) Now I installed Ubuntu again on my MSI notebook with Windows 8.1, and I cannot access the GRUB without hitting escape on startup, and even then, I can no longer open windows. Before all of this, I created a recovery point, file history and saved a back up on a external hard drive incase I did anything wrong. Now how can I revert my computer back to it's state before installation.

    I am really disappointed with Logitech. My first cordless wireless mouse was from them and it lasted like 5 years. I returned it under warranty and got a new one now 4-6 month later it is on the verge of breaking again.... You pay like $50 for this mouse and it lasts like 6 months that sad. I just lost faith in Logitech mice as I remember my bro also had a logitech mouse too and it broke after like 6 months. But almost all the mice I looked at at futureshop.ca or staples are labeled notebook mice or mobile mice. So not sure what mice would be right for me. I don't want a corded one though. I really liked the LX6 design alot but it can't last more than 6 months. Thanks

    I am setting up a notebook for software demo purpose. The machine has 8GB RAM, a Core i7 Intel CPU, a 128GB SSD, and runs Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit. The notebook is used as a KVM host and runs a few KVM guests. All such guests use the virbr0 default bridge. To enable them to communicate with each other using multicast, I added the following to the host's /etc/sysctl.conf, as shown below net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 Afterwards, following man sysctl(8), I issued the following: sudo /sbin/sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf My understanding is that this should make these settings persist over reboots. I tested it, and was surprised to find out the following: root@sdn1 :/proc/sys/net/bridge# more *tables :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-arptables :::::::::::::: 1 :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-ip6tables :::::::::::::: 1 :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-iptables :::::::::::::: 1 All defaults are coming back! Yes. I can use some kludgy "get arounds" such as putting a /sbin/sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf into the host's /etc/rc.local but I would rather "do it right".   • ReadyBoost in Windows 7

    I've bought an SD card today for my phot frame, but when I inserted it into my notebook I saw I could use it for ReadyBoost. Some background I'm a .net developer, using VMs and developing web applications (and Sharepoint). I use an HP notebook machine with Core 2 Duo 2GHz + 4GB RAM + 320 7200 HD. I simultaneously run Visual Studio 2010 with some plugins SQL Server Firefox with at least 10 tabs Chrome with about 5 tabs IIS VM with Server 2008 machine Sharepoint and occasionally also Photoshop and some InDesign as well. So I don't let my machine have a break. :D Question If I buy myself some really fast SDHC card (like SanDisk 16GB Extreme 30MB/s - is there anything faster) and use it with my Windows 7 ReadyBoost, will I see any performance gain? Is it going to work something similar to Seagate's HybridDrive Momentus with 4GB of solid state drive? What could I actually expect if I do put this card into my machine? And what would be recommended size? Observations I guess redirecting page file to it would speed up the system. Some VM machines on it would probably run faster as well because they could run parallel to HD host system I guess. Am I right or wrong?

  • How to run the CPU at something like 75%?

    My notebook is too old for me to invest into a new fan (it will simply be replaced by a new one when the final heat death occurs), but when it runs on full speed I feel like sitting in front of a vacuum cleaner with integrated cooking... I'm currently using NHC, the Max Battery mode of which let's the CPU run at 50% (~800 MHz). That's fine for most applications, and both temperature and noise remain low. However, on some occasions I need a bit more speed, more around 75% maybe. Can I set the power saving settings somehow so that the CPU won't surpass 75% of it's capability so that an acceptable compromise between power and noise is achieved? I can't set the CPU frequency in the BIOS and since on rare occasions I'd like to be able to switch to 100% without much hassling, hardware solutions like setting jumpers are no option. This answer to a similar (linux!) question mentions NHC should be able to offer these options, but for me they are all greyed out: The notebook is an Asus Z9200K, I guess NHC doesn't support its chipset enough for these advanced options.

  • SATA Blu-Ray drive not detected via USB adapter

    I'm using an SATA blu-ray drive (Lite-On IHOS104), connected via a USB adapter to my Windows 7 (32-bit) notebook. The first time I plugged the adapter in, it worked perfectly. The drive appeared in Explorer, and my player software was able to play an encrypted Blu-Ray disc just fine. After the first reboot, it never worked again. Now it shows up as "removable media" with a size of 0 bytes, irregardless of whether a disk is inserted or not. The drive does not show up under the green "eject USB device" icon in the taskbar. The adapter is powered using a separate power adapter. I have tried: disconnecting all other USB devices testing with a DVD instead of a Blu-Ray disc letting Windows search for updated drivers for the drive - there are none using the same drive and adapter on another Win7 (but x64) computer. They work perfectly. using other USB ports on the same notebook - tried them all. using a different SATA/USB-adapter What else can I do to diagnose this problem?
