  • Lubuntu LiveCD disabling auto-mount.

    In cooperation with my IT teacher we want to boot all PC's in IT class with Lubuntu. I've successfully set up PXE server, but there is one thing that worries us. Harddrives shouldn't be accessible from booted Lubuntu(normal user only). Would adding to fstab something like: /dev/sda1 /Idk/What auto noauto work? I'd like to add that I can uncompress squashfs livecd filesystem. If no, what other solution is there, to block auto-mounting /dev/sda drive?

  • Mac Finder: WD My Passport won't mount

    I really need your help. I have a WD My Passport 650GB (with Firewire and USB). I'm using it for almost a year now and it always worked fine. While underway I simply plug it in via Firewire - at home I connect it to my Airport Extreme to have it available as a network storage. Today I connected the hd to my macbookpro (via firewire) and NOTHING. The hd is starting (clearly making a sound and the power-indicator is flashing) but it won't appear in Finder. I also tried it with USB - no sign. I ran Disk Utility and tried to repair the disk. At first try I got a red error line saying that something is wrong with the "headers". However the repair completed with a success message saying that everything is ok. I also verified the hd. Also with a success message. I did that a few times again and unplugged it in between. Never got the error with the headers again - it's always completing and saying everything is ok. However I can't mount the drive. That is what Disk Utility is showing. Any ideas on that? I really need the files on that hd. thank you in advance!

  • I've just set up FreeBSD 8.0 and can't login with ssh

    /etc/hosts.allow is set to allow any protocol from anywhere. I can "ssh localhost" and it works. I simply get "connection refused" from putty on another machine. Any ideas? Will try to get a copy of the sshd_server.conf file as soon as I can find a flash disk to copy it to, but I thought someone might know what you need to set initially to permit login. EDIT: I think I can see why it's not working now. If I telnet to the IP address of the server I'm seeing MGE UPS SYSTEMS SNMP Web/Agent configuration menu. Enter Password: Doh. Ok, so the IP address is assigned by DHCP, but it seems there is already a device statically assigned to that address. I'll put in a reservation and try again. ok, sorted now. It was an ip address conflict. Windows DHCP isn't smart enough to check if there is something listening on the address before first assigning it.

  • FFMPEG dropping frames while encoding JPEG sequence at color change

    I'm trying to put together a slide show using imagemagick and FFMPEG. I use imagemagick to expand a single photo into 30fps video (imagemagick also handles things like putting some text captions on the frames along the way). When I go to let ffmpeg digest it into a video it clips along nicely on the color parts of the video, but when it gets to a black and white section it reports "frame= 2030 fps=102 q=32766.0 Lsize= 5203kB time=00:01:07.60 bitrate= 630.5kbits/s dup=0 drop=703" and drops every frame of video until it hits something with color. As you can imagine this results in entire photos being removed from the slideshow.   • What are the advantages of OSPF vs nexthop self with iBGP?

    Assuming I have a fairly small network internally, but I have 4 routers each connected out to a different network. The routers are all sat next to each other connected via a switch. Each router uses BGP to speak to the outside networks. There is an iBGP mesh for each router to exchange the routes internally it knows about from each external network. The usual setup is to use OSPF to distribute the connected routes, as the routes via iBGP will still have the next hop set to their original value. What is the advantage of using OSPF in this scenario versus simply using 'set nexthop self' on the routes?

  • How can I automatically delete /tmp folder on shared drive?

    We have a /tmp folder that people use for temporary stuff. It can be anything and any file. We want to make it so that this automatically deletes (or preferably MOVES to another folder on the same shared drive) all the files that haven't been accessed in the last two weeks. This should happen weekly on a schedule that I don't have to manually do. Is there software out there that does this? Anyone have a script possibly? Server 2008R2

  • Why is Windows 7 announcing itself as an IPv6 router?

    I have a 6in4 ipv6 connection from a linux box to a broker. I use gogoc to establish the connection to the broker, and radvd to advertise the route to clients on the network. All this appears to work, the problem is that I have a Windows 7 machine on the same network, and it is advertising itself as a ipv6 router. Which it is not. If this service is stopped, the computer will not have the enhanced connectivity benefits that these technologies offer.) seems to be the culprit, as if it is stopped, I don't get the routes advertised. So my question is now more specifically "why is IP Helper announcing routes?".

  • Prevent a program from creating files in a users home directory

    I run an engineering program for class, Quartus 2. The issue i am having is that every time i launch the program, it creates 10 bitmap files in my home directory. This is not so much of a problem, it just makes my OCD hurt :( I can delete them without affecting anything, but every time the program is launched it recreates them, and there is nothing in the program (that i have found) that stops these files from being created. Is there anything i can do to prevent this program, or any profram from creating files like this in my home folder?

  • Office 365 domain federation conversion failed

    We're doing things backwards, we have an established o365 domain, with 400+ users, and are just now deploying local AD, and ADFS for SSO. Last night, after configuring my servers, I ran the powershell command convert-MSOLdomaintofederated to convert the xxx.com vanity domain to federated, it errored out with an unspecified error(Microsoft ADFS support said the error has to do with the default password settings being changed.) And when I run convert-MSOLdomaintostandard, it comes back with the domain is already standard. Also in the o365 portal it shows the domain as standard, however it is trying to process login attempts as if it were a federated domain. I've spent 5 hours total on the phone with Microsoft, and it has been escalated to their engineering department for resolution, sometime within the next few days... I need it yesterday. From what we can gather, the conversion process started, error out, changed some of the internal configurations to federated, but left the description as standard.(if that makes since). So its in a weird limbo, where its in both modes but neither at the same time. Currently, the only way to fix it is to remove the vanity domain, and re-add it. I need a way to dissociate the user accounts from xxx.com domain to allow its removal. Removal of all the users themselves is not an option.

    I have a 4 port Digium card in there, and have 4 lines running smoothly. Now, we added ANOTHER 4 port card and have 4 more analog lines coming into the Trixbox server. It still runs the 4 fine, but what do I need to do to add the additional 4 phone numbers/lines? I want it to act exactly as before, there's nothing special about the new lines. We just need more lines so that when we have 4 out of state customers call, we can have 4 more call and not get the busy signal. Trixbox CE 2.8

  • Method to integrate Powershell scripts with non-Windows workflow?

    I love the smell of new machines in the morning. I'm automating a machine creation workflow that involves several separate systems across my infrastructure, some of which involve 15 year old perl scripts on Solaris hosts, PXE Booting Linux systems, and Powershell on Windows Server 2008. I can script each of the individual parts, and integrating the Linux and Unix automation is fairly straightforward, but I'm at a loss as to how to reliably tie together the Powershell scripts to the rest of the processes. I would prefer if the process began on a Linux host, since I imagine that it will end up as a web application living on an Apache server, but if it needs to begin on Windows, I am hesitantly okay with that. I would ideally like something along the lines of psexec for Linux to run against Windows, but the answer in that direction appears to by Cygwin, and as much as I appreciate all of the hard work that they put in, it has never felt right, if you know what I mean. It's great for a desktop and gives a lot of functionality, but I feel like Windows servers should be treated like Windows servers and not bastardized Unix machines (which, incidentally, is my argument against OSX servers, too, and they're actually Unix). Anyway, I don't want to go with Cygwin unless that's the last and only option. So I guess what I'm asking is if there is a way to execute jobs on Windows machines from Linux. Without Cygwin. I'm open to ideas and suggestions, including "Look idiot, everyone uses Cygwin, so suck it up and deal with it". Thanks in advance!

  • Dell PowerEdge R720 - Corrupted RAID

    Apologies in advance for the lengthy question. We have a Dell PowerEdge R720 server with: 2 x 136GB SAS drives in RAID 1 for the OS (Ubuntu Server 12.04) 6 x 3TB SATA drives in RAID 5 for data A few days ago we were getting errors when trying to access files on the large RAID 5 partition. We rebooted the server and got a message about the raid controller has found a foriegn config. We've had this before, and just needed to use Dell's RAID configuration utility to import foreign config on the RAID. Last time this worked, but this time, it started doing a disk check then we got this: FSCK has returned the following: "/dev/sdb1 inode 364738 has a bad extended attribute block 7 /dev/sdb1 unexpected inconsistency run fsck manually (i.e without -a or -p options) MOUNTALL fsck /ourdatapartition [1019] terminated with status 4 MOUNTALL filesystem has errors /ourdatapartition errors where found while checking the disk drive for /ourdatapartition Press F to fix errors, I to Ignore or M for Manual Recovery" We pressed F to try and fix the errors, but it eventually errored with: Inode 275841084, i_blocks is 167080, should be 0. Fix? yes Inode 275841141 has an invalid extend node (blk 2206761006, lblk 0) Clear? yes Inode 275841141, i_blocks is 227872, should be 0. Fix? yes Inode 275842303 has an invalid extend node (blk 2206760975, lblk 0) Clear? yes .... Error storing directory block information (inode=275906766, block=0, num=2699516178): Memory allocation failed /dev/sdb1: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** e2fsck: aborted /dev/sdb1: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** mountall: fsck /ourdatapartition [1286] terminated with status 9 mountall: Unrecoverable fsck error: /ourdatapartition We noticed one of the drive lights was not lit at all, and thought this may have failed and be the problem. We replaced the drive with a spare, and tried "F" to repair it again, but we keep just getting the same error as above. In the RAID configuration utility, all drives show as "online" and "optimal". We do have this data on another replicated server, so we're not worried about "recovering" anything, we just want to get the system back online asap. The server has 64 or 32GB memory, can't remember off the top of my head, but either way, with a 14TB RAID, I think it may still not be enough.   • Re-downloading accidentally deleted podcasts in iTunes

    I deleted some previously deleted podcast episodes in iTunes 9 and I'd like to re-download them. (I don't want to manually re-download them because then they won't show up in the podcast's list in the iTunes Podcast section.) I've read http://blog.krisgielen.be/archives/54 as well as Way to get old podcasts in iTunes where the suggestion is to delete the iTunes entries for the podcasts I'd like to recover, then hold shift while re-opening that podcast's little triangle icon. Here's the problem though: holding shift and re-opening the triangle tells iTunes to refresh the RSS feed, and it's possible that the RSS feed no longer contains the item you want. What I'm really looking for is a means of getting the "Get" button (that normally appears on un-downloaded podcasts) to reappear on the episodes I've previously downloaded but deleted.

  • What happens when you add a Graphics card to a i7 with build in graphics (e.g. HD 4000)

    I'm thinking of upgrading my computer from an AMD Phenom II X4 955BE with a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Graphics card (not integrated) to using a Intel Core i7 3770. As I have no knowledge of integrated graphics, my question is, what happens to the computing power when not using the HD4000 integrated graphics of the CPU (does it mean the CPU will run faster then it would if I relied on it?) Also what is better the CPUs inbuilt HD4000 or my Radeon Graphics card? I am mostly interested in terms of content creation: Using Adobe After Effects, 3D Rendering etc. Not too bothered about gaming performance. I will be using the spare parts of this build and older systems to make a second computer for network renders so what will be the advantages of keeping the Radeon with the current system for that?

  • Get Used rather than Provisioned space in PowerCLI

    I'm trying to run a capacity report, and when I run the Get-HardDisk cmdlet in PowerCLI, the value it returns for CapacityKB is the Provisioned space. For example, let's say I've thin provisioned a 200GB disk, which is currently using say 30GB, it returns the 200GB value. Is there any way I can get the other value? I need to know how much disk space is actually being used on the LUN by the vmdk file. My PowerCLI version is 5.0.1.

    My university provides a public_html file in each student's Linux directory so tat each student can have a webpage. I want to put all my PHP scripts into that file and place the index in a sub-directory called webroot. I'm trying to work out a way to have an .htaccess file in the public_html that will redirect ALL requests in that folder to be redirected. There's lots of advice on redirecting any file that doesn't exists but I want to redirect regardless of the existence of a file. Can I use something like RewriteCond TRUE?

  • Ubuntu Chromium bookmark icons blank

    Ever so often I load Chromium and it refuses to load my profile. Now that doesn't happen any more but since then it refuses to load the icons for my bookmarks which, if you look at the attached pic, is my only way of identifying which icons do what (other than hover for tool-tip, or actually pressing the icon button). The other possible variable is that the bookmarks are meant to sync with Google sync - I'm not sure if that is a factor. How do I restore the icons to my bookmark bar? Chromium version: Version 20.0.1132.47 Ubuntu 12.04 (144678)
