• Using my System as the server- need advice

  We are deploying my web application in my system in jboss. And I am planning to use my system as the server as well. There are no html pages or jsp pages deployed. The client requests for resources and the server provides the resources in the form of objects. We are also using databases(Postgresql-15 tables) as the database server(this will also reside in my machine). My system configuration is Windows Vista, 2.3 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 32 bit. There can be many requests coming in at the same time. So is this configuration enough? Should we go with a different Operating System like Windows Server? I have never used Windows Server OS. How will it be different from other windows operating systems? Or if you feel please some other OS will be good in this situation, please suggest.

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • VPS hosting for a social network

  Hi, I've developed a social network and I've been using shared hosting for that since it was launched. With that I wasn't able to send emails in bulk in cases like "newsletters" and "invitations to join my site". Plus most importantly most of the mails I send ended up in user's SPAM list.I'm planning to move into VPS as it may not have limits added. I'm wondering what's the cheapest VPS host available. I'm not pretty much familiar with Linux commands and seeking cPanel to do the work for me. • Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated ...) (tried to allocate ... bytes) not due to memory_limit setting

  Since a few days, I get the following error on my server: Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 262144) (tried to allocate 393216 bytes) Usually this error is due to a memory consumption that is exceeding the configured memory_limit, but in my case there is no relation. The memory_limit is set to 128MB, and in this case, we not even reach 1MB. Also the server does not have a big load, in fact it is an intranet server, and there are just a few people conected to it. System: Windows Server 2003, 1Go RAM, only 600 MB used. Apache 2.2.4 PHP 5.2.3 This error is appearing randomly. The memory limit reached also is randomly between a few kB to a few MB. Sometimes restarting Apache is required to get rid of the error, sometimes it disapears itself. Restarting Apache or the entire server helps temporarily. Where could this problem come from ? How could I narrow down the error source ?

  Im trying to move my exchange mailbox store to a new partition and i keep running into an error message saying: "cannot copy insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." The server is a Dell Poweredge 2850 with Dual Xeon Processors @ 3.00GHz and 4GB of ram. Running Win Server 2K3 R2 SP2 with Exchange 2K3 Standard. The Store is around 55GB any ideas. I want to get exchange on its on partition since I need to free up some space on the partition its currently on.

• Restoring files from blueprint on command

  I am setting up a server. I already have rented a machine running centOS 6 but I have run into a bit of a technical problem with configuring the server software: The server will have some files that it will try to read/write to them but what I need is a way to have a blueprint of these files and everytime the server restarts the files that it used get deleted and replaced by the blueprints. I have heared of a RAM disks or Virtual File Systems but didnt quite understand how they work or how to set them up. The server software is written in java which means bash commands can be run from it. I cannot modify what happens when the server shuts down entirely what I can do is run a command before the server runs the final shutdown save

• Terminal Server 2003 Performance Troubleshooting

  Let me get your thoughts on terminal server performance problems. The server hosts average 25 users which, after running some numbers, on average use 600MB memory with their main applications running (web browser, adobe reader, IP phone client). All users are on the same LAN as server. We constantly experience slow response and short session lockups. Combined CPU usage is on average 10%. What appears strange to me is that the system shows 29GB physical memory with 25GB of it free. The page file usage is about 50% averaging 9GB used. Some server specs OS: Server 2003 32bit Enterprise with /PAE flag RAM: 32GB CPU: 2xQuad Core @ 2.27Ghz HD: RAID5 1.2GB After doing basic troubleshooting using performance monitor it leads me to believe that the performance problems are caused by the 32bit OS limitation in addressing full 32GB of physical memory even though the /PAE flag is used. Can anyone suggest something, troubleshooting steps that can lead to a more conclusive answer? Thanks

• ESXi 5.1 - Unable to register host

  I download and successfully installed ESXi 5.1. I am however unable to get the licence key I received installed. An error occurred when assigning the specified licence key: The system Memory is not satisfied with the 32 GB of Maximum memory limit. Current with 80.00 GB of Memory. Is there now way around this? A quick google revealed that this is a global problem with no real answer or resolution. The only workaround is to remove the physical RAM chips, but as this is in going to be in production I dont want to do that as it would mean down time when I have to reinsert the memory

• Will my RAID0 stay intact when I move it to a new computer?

  My primary drive is a 250GB WD SATA drive. So, I added 2x 500GB 7,200 RPM WD SATA drives into my Windows Vista box and created a 1TB RAID0. I then formatted the the primary drive and installed Windows 7. To my pleasant surprise when I booted into Windows 7 my RAID0 was still intact and I kept trotting along the same as I did before. Now I am replacing my motherboard, processor, and RAM and plan on formatting the primary 250GB drive again and using it to boot for a new clean install of Windows 7. My question is: if I move these two SATA drives which are setup for RAID0 into the new system, install Windows 7 again, will the RAID0 remain? Edit: Software RAID. I created it within Windows. The RAID0 does NOT contain the system boot partition.

• No display but video card fans spins

  Since I moved my computer there's no display when I plug my screen in the video card but works fine in the mother board. I tried reseting the cmos, but I still have the same problem. The fans are spining and there's a light from the card. I tried the DVI ports and the HDMI Here's my build. I have it for 2 months and everything was working fine. Do you think it's the video card? • How does one go about fixing a pixelation issue?

  I've been having a lot of trouble with pixelation and also in-game display driver crashes. At first I thought the problem may have been my graphics card (Sapphire 5750) but I have RMA'd it three times and I'm still having trouble. So what I think it might be is my PSU, its 650Watt but its made by Azza so it was cheap and not made by a necessarily good company. Or maybe it could be the CPU (AMD Phenom Black Edition 3.4Ghz) It runs hot (60C) but it passes Everest's test. Someone told me it could be the memory (8GB DDR3) but I don't really see how RAM has anything to do with my problem. So what are some of you suggestions?   I have a brand new HP Quad Core - 6GB Ram - running 64-bit Windows 7. Running Norton Internet 2010. I try copying music files from HD to 16 GB thumbdrive and get blue screen after a few files have transfered over to thumbdrive. Computer blinks once and boom - blue screen and then reboots. This is really aggravating. I stopped anti-virus, pulled other USB attached devices - still does same thing. Any solutions out there?

• PC Speaker sounds when machine locks up.

  What would cause my PC speaker to sound a low frequency continuous tone as my system locks up? Generally what will happen is I'll notice the application I'm using will stop responding but explorer will be partially responsive, then after a few more actions explorer stops responding, and the last click will cause the pc speaker to emit a low constant tone as the machine locks up completely. The only resolve at that point is to restart. Its not a thermal issue, I'm reading the cpu, and hdd temps with software and hardware monitors. AV and malware scans come up clean. I've swapped out my ram, reseated all my components. Used sfc with no results. chkdisk locks up at 3% and defragmenting does the same, but I can read the drive without trouble (I know this as I've done av/malware scans and I also backed everything up since this started happening) I'm mostly just interested to learn, if anyone knows, why the pc speaker would sound during the lock up. windows xp sp2

• Read ahead buffering while playing video file from optical disc

  I was wondering if there is a program for Windows 7 (64-bit), that reads ahead the file to be played back (usually MKV files in my case) to the RAM, so the disc that the video file resides in, won't spin for the entire duration of the playback, but only every time the cache is almost empty (with big enough cache so it won't need the drive for long periods). A program that I've used in the past (called DVDIdle), was doing that universally for every video player I wanted, but they've stopped updating it 6 years ago and now it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 (tried using compatibility mode too). The method I am using now, is to either have the drive wearing down and buzzing all the time or manually copy the entire file to HDD, SSD or RamDisk and play it from there. The closest thing I've found, is a software that slows down the drive's spin speed, but I was looking for something more convenient, automated, without waiting for an entire file to be copied before starting playback or needing any HDD space, like I've used to in the past.   I run Windows XP inside a virtual machine for some tasks. I attempted to use git to version the image for virtual box; however, it is about 6GB after all the service packs. I only have 6GB of ram and git bombs out saying it is out of memory. I would basically like to have snapshots of Windows so that I can simply blow away an image and start anew when I want to. I like to have something I can rollback to in the event that an upgrade doesn't work so I would prefer to use version control or snapshots if the filesystem supports it. Any ideas on what tools I can use to do that?

• Xen Disk Performence Issues

  I'm currently using Xen PV on CentOS 5 with my domU's as flat files running on a hardware RAID controlled (write cache enabled) formatted with XFS. On the dom0 I can get about 500MB/s in a 2GB dd write from /dev/zero however on the domU's I'm lucky if I get 10MB/s (it is usually around half that). I've tried changing the disk scheduling to NOOP on the domU's, changed some mount parameters and tweaked the performance allocations of both the dom0 (prioritize CPU) and domU's (increase RAM and VCPU allocations). None of these steps have produced any noticeable change in performance. My instinct here is that it is not a hardware problem, due to the solid performance of the dom0. Any ideas on what might be causing this problem? I'm considering moving to LVM based domU's.

Does this configuration make sense for a SmartOS HPC, or would you recommend an alternative? System Specs: 2x 8-core xeon 384 GB RAM 30 TB HDs with 2x512GB SSDs Uses: - zfs for serving data to different vms, and over the network; 1 SSD for L2ARC and 1 for ZIL - typically 1-2 ubuntu instances running R and custom C/C++ code My biggest concerns as a newbie to SmartOS and ZFS are: (1) will I get near-metal performance from ubuntu running on SmartOS if it is the only active vm? (2) how do I serve data from the global zfs pool to the containers and other network devices?

• File corruption

  Recently, almost every file I try to copy into my HDDs gets corrupted. When writing to the disk, some portion of the file is replaced by random bytes (Checked using Diff apps) There's no problem reading existing files. I'm pretty sure it's not the HDD, becasue I've tried another HDD (a brand new 1TB WD) and the problem still remains. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU, an ASUS M2NE motherboard, 2 WD SATA II HDDs (320GB + 1TB) and 3GB of Corsair RAM. My OS is Windows 7 (64 bit) Now, what could be the cause of this? If it's the motherboard, can it be fixed by using a PCI SATA card?

• Virtual MS Sql Server not consuming enough CPU

  We have a Win2008 server 32 bit running as a virtual machine under ESX server. It has 6 CPU cores of 2Gz each and 4GB ram. It's running MS Sql Server 2008 R2 only. Problem: The server is heavily loaded and responds slowly. From windows taskmanagers point of view, it really looks overloaded, CPU wise. However, our external "cloud manager" says it's only using 2.5GHz worth of CPU-cycles in the cluster. I/O times looks "good". We have already tried to set the SQL servers number of working threads from 0(auto) to 256, to no effect. How to tune the VM host, guest or SQL to use all of it's alotted resources? Does it sound possible att all?

• Outlook Express hangs when selecting multiple emails

  I'm using Outlook Express (6, I think) on Windows XP. Lately, it has been hanging. Sometimes this happens at startup (right after the main window with all the panes loads) and sometimes when selecting many emails (sometimes as low as three emails at once, sometimes at ten, it's not a fixed number). When this happens, msimn.exe starts to use 98-100% CPU and RAM usage shoots up very quickly, reaching hundreds of megabytes in half a minute. The message pane goes gray instead of showing the message contents. As I said, this sometimes happens right after the main window loads, sometimes when selecting many emails at once. I tried backing up everything, deleting the identities, creating a new one and restoring, but this still happens.

• Very slow Windows 7 on Thinkpad T61

  I have a very strange problem with my fresh install of Windows 7 Profesional, 64bits on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 : The overal performance is very slow, the disk is constantly spinning, even without any program running (after boot, no other programs installed). The boot process is very slow itself (4-5 minutes). I mention that the laptop was fine on XP until the upgrade. Thanks ! Additional info (as requested by the comments) : 2GB RAM Yes, I added all the manufacturer (Lenovo) drivers and updates (using the utility provided by Lenovo) Tried with both 32 and 64 bits editions. The 32 bits one is performing a little better, but not very usable either. The hdd has enough space (20 GB or so) The problem is still present on a fresh install, so no recycle bin emptying or unistall programs (there aren't any except plain 7) would help. I'm not a newbie, so no obvious causes are left unchecked

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?
