• Solutions for exporting a remote desktop app (display and audio)

  I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to export a desktop app running on a server to a client machine. The server is ideally Linux, the desktop is Windows (+Mac for icing on the cake). The export should be encrypted and I need to support multiple clients from one server. I only want to export an individual app, not a whole desktop, and ideally am looking for open source solutions. The obvious, cheapest, simplest choice is to use X tunnelled over ssh (e.g using Xming on the desktop) but X doesn't support audio. What are the alternatives? Or is there a way to support audio using X or in parallel to X? Thanks

  I have files with naming convention st009_out.abc1.dat st009_out.abc2.dat st009_out.abc3.dat .................. .................. I am writing Python code where I want to use data from the file to perform a math function and need to extract the second column from the file. I have tried it this way: for k in range(1,10): file1=open('st009_out.abc'+str(k)+'.dat','r') ........... os.system("awk '{print $2}' st009_out.abc${k}.pmf > raj.dat") but this is not working as it is not taking the value of k in the shell command. How do I progress?

Sorry if this voids the rules of conduct on this website! I'm very new to using unix. I have a program that converts a ".evt" file to an .rq1, which is used for data analysis. The command to do so is simple, for example: Convert data.evt (this outputs data.rq1). This program, let's say, is located in directory /A and I have a data file that I want to convert in directory /B. How would I go about executing this program without moving the convert program to directory B?

• Does Exchange have ability to run hidden mailboxes?

  Hello, Title of my question may sound a little bit odd but I was thinking if Exchange 2010 or 2007 or any program that would work in conjunction with Exchange has ability to create this structure: Users having their normal mailboxes connected and using them as everyone would in Outlook 2003/2007/2010. Users having additional mailboxes (from old Exchange 2003) attached but hidden on demand of Administrator. For example administrator could easy disable them just like they never been attached making them invisible to users and everyone else. Would be good if such mailboxes could be easily removed out of system (lets say on external drive) by simple step not manual job for 100 mailboxes. Users without ability to copy/move their mails to outside storage (like a local .pst file)? Do you guys have any suggestions on this? I was thinking maybe using public folders but this seems like overkill and not really suited for this. And please don't ask me why I need this type of security (it's not something I requested).

• Configuring Vmware virtual machines to run under different IPs and PC specs

  Right now I'm using a simple VmWare virtual machine with preinstalled Win 7. The IP is assigned automatically (it's the same as main OS IP). Is it possible to create several virtual machines that have different hardware specifications and different IP addresses? Here is what I mean regarding these issues: Specs: Certainly, you can easily change some specifications in the Settings menu (RAM size, HDD size), but what about advanced settings? For example: advanced settings for the Processor: is it AMD (2500+,4000+, etc.. ) or Intel (core 2, Pentium, etc..) Ram - is it Corsair 4 Gb 1333 Mhz or Kingston 2 x 2 Gb 866Mhz or something else? Hdd - Is it Seagate Barracuda 80 gb 5400 Rpm or is it Samsung 500Gb 7200 Rpm or some random SSD? Programs that work under a Virtual Machine shouldn't have a clue if that's a VmWare or not. IPs: Every program that's launched under main OS use the real IP: 93.56.xx.xx All programs that are launched under virtual machine A use IP 1: 74.78.xx.xx All programs that are launched under virtual machine B use IP 2: 84.159.xx.xx I believe that you have to use either VPN or Proxy to solve this problem. The Sum Up: The idea is to create 2-3 independent virtual machines with different hardware specifications and IP addresses. Programs that work under a certain Virtual Machine shouldn't have a clue if that's a VmWare or the real PC. Any ideas/tips or experience regarding configuration will be appreciated!

• s3cmd run on command line not on cron

  Many have said that the problem is with environment but I still can't seem to solve this problem. BTW I am using Ubuntu 9.10 login as user, then sudo -s using this command: s3cmd put file s3://bucket worked! now here is the simple script intended for testing: #! /bin/bash env >/tmp/cronjob.log s3cmd put file s3://bucket issuing the command crontab -e * * * * * /opt/script 2>&1 | logger Then using tail to syslogs Dec 3 23:22:01 ubuntu CRON[10795]: (root) CMD (/opt/script 2&1 | logger) But by verifying it on s3Fox Organizer, the file is not uploaded. (I tried changing the #! /bin/sh (no effect), putting crons on /etc/crontab (no effect), setting HOME=/home/user (no effect) What are other options to try? Or other ways to debug this problem.   I need to send a large volume of emails, roughly 60.000 per week. At the moment we outsource this service to a third party, and we expect to double our volume within the next 6 months. Since the service is starting to be too expensive, I was thinking about setting up our own MTA. Our own SysAdmin told us it is not difficult at all to have our own MTA, but I'm afraid he might have oversimplified this. Is it difficult to handle a MTA? Should I be afraid that my MTA will lose the company mails? Should I stay with a third party service? p.s: The emails have been collected respecting the local legislation on privacy, so no spam.

• How to run a process and completely detach it of its parent shell

  I'm running a program on a linux server that will take days to complete. I'm launching it from my workstation from an SSH terminal, as this program is command-line only. I want to be able to do all of these : launch that program, redirect standard outputs to files, exit my SSH session without making this terminate the process. I thought about $ ./MyProg.csh -params -foo -bar </dev/null 1>~/out.log 2>~/err.log & However, the process is terminated the moment I close my SSH session. My workstation is running Windows XP, and I cannot guarantee its uptime over several days, which is required for the processing of my data on the Linux server. As you may have noted, my program requires to be launched from CSH. Is it possible to do this ? Thanks.

• Can't run monitor at native 1080p resolution on Windows 7

  I have a 24" ViewSonic VX2453 monitor that supports 1920x1080p, connected using HDMI. However at that resolution, the desktop goes off the screen. Using the Nvidia control panel, I have to set it to a custom resolution of 1804x1014 to display correctly. The monitor has its drivers properly installed (the correct model name shows up in control panel after installing the drivers), and I'm running 64 bit Win7 Ultimate. I have a GeForce 560 Ti card, if that helps. Why does this happen?

• Unable to run Microsoft Office 2010 install file

  This problem began when I noticed that the icons in the Windows 7 task bar for MS Word and Outlook were generic. I rebuilt the icon cache. Still not the right icons, but not the generic "document" icons either, and both are identical (to each other). The two programs seem to be working OK. So then I tried to repair MS Office. I ran the setup file. It extracts the files, I get the splash screen, and then the message, "Setup has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." with a "Close program" button. Microsoft does not notify me about a solution. What I have tried: 1. running two other copies of the setup program; 2. doing an in-place re-install of Windows 7.

• PHP processes run one at a time, always taking 100% of one core

  We have seven websites written in PHP running on a Windows 2008 server with IIS 7.5. They are all very slow right now. When I look in Task Manager, I see around 10 php-cgi.exe processes, and they are all taking 0% of the CPU, except one, which is taking 25%. It's a quad-core server, so it's taking 100% of one core. If I watch for a few seconds, the process taking 25% will go to 0%, and a different php-cgi.exe process will jump to 25%. So all the php-cgi.exe processes are just lined up, waiting on a single core, and each process uses 100% of the processor when it can. Each of the 7 sites is in its own application pool in IIS, and we're using FastCGI. The PHP version is 5.3. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Stop application windows hiding when app loses focus

  How can I stop windows on my mac (Mac OS Snow Leopard) from hiding when the app that owns the window loses focus. Not all apps on the mac do this, but Photoshop and Transmission are perfect examples of apps that exhibit this behaviour. It's frustrating when you want to type notes in another app (e.g. word processor), but refer to the contents of the window that hides when you focus the word processor to start typing your notes! There must be an option (or hack) to disable this? I always thought Apple were supposed to be the masters of UI design, but allowing apps to do this seems wrong.

• I want to run a script when known bluetooth device connects/disconnects to WinXP

  I have a laptop on my desk at work. I have screensaver timer enabled, so if I'm not using the computer for ten minutes, it will start the screensaver. I also have "On resume, password protect" option checked. This is useful and I want it to be so. However, sometimes I just sit at my cubicle and read some documents without touching the computer. During that time I want my computer to know that I'm there and that there is no need to start the screensaver. I have a mobile phone that is bluetooth paired with the laptop for synchronizing calendars. Is there some way for a script or a program to know that any (or specified) paired device is connected? While typing this out I thought that there might be some registry entries for this. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? -Rope

• Cannot navigate Microsoft store after app install / update

  Every time i go to the store and install a new app or update an existing one, I go back to the main screen of Store after a few screen refreshes. And then oddly, scrolling doesn't work and neither do the buttons, although the Tiles are fine. I then have to close the app and then re-open it and things are back to normal. I don't know if this is a weird bug or just the way it is. Could anyone please confirm and / or give a possible explanation?

• Can I remotely monitor printf results of a C program?

  I have a long running C program in which I've started from the Terminal.app using: gdb program_name gdb run I'm using many printf statements to monitor the progress of the program. Unfortunately, the screen of the computer has been frozen since yesterday, but the process is still running. My question is, can I watch the progress of the program (i.e. the results of the printf statements) remotely? I'm not that familiar with the terminal, but I know how to ssh and do some simple terminal tasks. The OS of the machine with the frozen screen is Mac OS 10.6.

  I have a uWSGI setup where I run dynamic mode and add applications to it. All applications are working off the same codebase, but each have their own settings file. Its working beautifully. Say for instance, i want to change a setting for one app that has already been loaded. Is there a way I can get uwsgi to reload the app, rather than restarting the whole uwsgi server? In emperor mode I could just touch the config file. How do I achieve the equivalent result in dynamic mode?

  Hi All, I know this question has been asked already but I either didn't understand the answer or it didn't apply to me. I have a php script that I am calling every 1 minute using CPanel to set up the Cron Job. The nature of the script means that it could overrun for just over the minute so I need to know how to stop the next one running if the first one hasn't completed. I have a VPS running CENTOS 5.5 and have access to WHM and CPanel. I have never used Linux before (only just got the server yesterday) so I have no idea what I am doing and would appreciate some help if possible.   I'm working on moving my current server setup to newer hardware, and migrating from ubuntu karmic koala to lucid lynx. Currently i'm using gw6c (compiled from the gogo6 website, as opposed to the version from the repositories) to get ipv6 access for my systems. On the karmic koala system, i used simple init.d script to get the ipv6 client started #! /bin/sh /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c -f /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c.conf I figured since this runs at any runlevel, it should translate to respawn console none start on startup stop on shutdown script exec /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c -f /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c.conf emit free6_ipv6_started end script this works fine started from initctrl, but it apparently fails to start when it boots. - its status being stop/waiting. It works fine (and respawns) when started otherwise.Any ideas on where i'm going wrong, and what would be the appropriate 'start on' arguement? EDIT: the exact error is 'init: gw6c main process (xxx) ended with status 8' followed by the process respawning , with xxx being a PID i suspect. I'm also half suspecting this is cause gw6c starts before networking does, and i need my eth0 up before gw6c is

• Outlook 2007 inbox message grouping like the Web App

  The Outlook Web App has this nice, default, conversation grouping. It hides all earlier messages in a conversation from the message list. When I click a mail, it shows the conversation thread in the reading pane. In Outlook 2007 I have tried grouping on received date, but it groups by minutes and not days. I've also tried grouping by conversation, but then I get this ugly tree in the list pane and I loose the "today", "yesterday", and vice versa groups. So how do I make Outlook 2007 look like the Outlook Web App? Illustration
