• Which free PHP based forum is the easiest to extend or customize? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Content Management System (CMS) should I use? I am looking to start a new forum, with a traditional forum layout (like webhostingtalk, for example). In this space, I know phpBB and SMF are strong contenders. I do not know for sure the names of other great forum software that might exist... My most important need is that it should be easy to modify the display area, at the least, without having to dig too much into the core. Drupal excels in this area with its templating system, but the forum module doesn't look like the forum interface most people are used to... It would be a great plus if the software has alternative Captchas like question based or invisible Captcha. If it doesn't, I would like to be able to code it in without much trouble (that is, the software exposes a good API)

• how do I set up a double domain?

  I would like to set up a server similar to Google's. Their domain acts like a double domain, like you can use these URLS, "play.Google.com" or "apps.Google.com", to go to different sites.. For example, my domain would now be "my_domain.com" but i would like another one to be "domain2.my_domain.com". My question is,what is this officially called and how do i set it up? I'm not sure if you need two servers or just 1;

• Download images and other documents from external websites

  We're running a website which enables users to download documents about our company, such as: -wallpapers with the company logo. -company logos in various flavours. -media kits in pdf format. Since these files are quite big in size (some reach 1MB), we no longer want them to be downloaded from our website directly as it's consuming our bandwidth. Accordingly we've been looking into document sharing services. For instance we found Scribd which could allow us to share pdf files, but not our wallpapers and logos which are in png format. Is there a free service we can use for our users to reliably download any type of files we want to host? (ideally on a service which allows users to easily browse through our files).

• Google Analytics Funnel Step Regular Expression Not Working

  The first step in a funnel is going to have a dynamic ending fragment. Examples: http://mysite.com/invite/tickle-party http://mysite.com/invite/pajama-party http://mysite.com/invite/puppy-party To allow for such dynamism, I provided this url for step one: \invite(.*) My goals work but the funnel visualization report shows 0 for everything. I know this problem is due to the regex in the funnel step because I copied this entire goal except I replaced \invite(.*) with /invite/puppy-party When I hardcoded /invite/puppy-party the funnel worked as expected. Why is my funnel report not working with my original funnel step url parameter?

• Phishing alert but file never existed

  I got an alert from Google Webmasters. They say the following file was present in my host: example.com/~jhostgop/identity.php I checked my files and it never existed at all. I've experience this problem in two different host and domains but the file never existed in my file system. It appears somebody out there is linking a random domain and it prefixes the link with /~jhostgop/identity.php. Now Google may have indexed them so now I get those false phishing alerts. Anyone experienced this? Is it possible to prevent this?

• Can't get lines around table borders/cells [migrated]

  I have several web pages containing tables, for which I'd like to have line-borders around the tables and the cells. In fact, some of these pages existed for several years already, and rendered acceptly in IE6, IE7. We switched about 6 months ago to a completely different set of style sheets to change our site look and feel. We also switched to "modern" browsers such as IE8 (and because I couldn't stop Vista) to IE9. Now the borders don't render at all. I spent a day fighting with this about a month ago, and failed to fix it. It seemed that I could reduce the page down to just the barest table and IE8 would still not render the border. I think I decided IE8 was just buggy, but I'm not an HTML expert so it is more likely that I'm buggy. (I'm just getting back to this; I'll go see if I can find that reduced page). • What is a generalized form creator that runs on .NET / Windows?

  At the institution that I'm at, we've been looking for web applications that enable users to create and deploy their own forms. Similar applications are Wufoo, and google forms. Unfortunately, those solutions will not work for us, because we are required to host all data and information on our own servers. I've found a few solutions that are written in PHP, but at this point, it doesn't appear that this is acceptable. I've tried searching for ".net form creator" but unfortunately, when you search for ".net forms" you get a lot of results relating to created asp.net webforms, which is not what we're looking for at all. I've been told that finding a solution that runs on .NET and windows servers with either Oracle or MSSQL databases would be much more acceptable. I've found a few, but they are open source, and the IS Security people are not kind to those solutions, despite my attempts to show otherwise. If anyone knows of some solution out there, I would greatly appreciate you passing on the names of those applications!

• Lightning fast forum based around metadata / tags? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What Forum Software should I use? I wonder if anything like this exists. I'd like to add a forum to my site, but instead of the usual forum/subforum/sub-subforum structure, I'd like to use a metadata/tag approach where everything exists as a single directory, and where there's a search field at the top which instantly (<0.5 sec) filters the threads to a particular keyword or keywords. Also, as the admin, I would be able to add highly visible buttons at the top, which can be clicked on for the main categories I choose for the forum (nevertheless, users can also add tags to their own threads outside of these default main tags I supply if they wish). This approach, if done properly, is more powerful, efficient, maintenance free, scalable and friendly than a standard forum, so I was hoping someone had the same idea and made something out of it. It couldn't be that hard. I'd want the speed to be up to (or near) the standard of this: http://forum.dlang.org/ Other forums (e.g.: phpBB) are orders of magnitude worse than that in terms of latency (posting or browsing), and I think that is wrong, even in principle ;)

  Hi folks, is it better to have seperate country specific domains (which costs more money) or subdomains which define the country, for better SEO? eg. stackoverflow.com stackoverflow.com.au stackoverflow.co.uk vs stackoverflow.com au.stackoverflow.com uk.stackoverflow.com Assumption: int the search engine web master tools, each subdomain are associated to a country. eg. au.stackoverflow.com is associated to the country Australia. cheers! Is there such a small SEO difference between them? Is the first method way way way better than the second with getting better SEO results? But a number of SEO mates have suggested that this is a valuable waste of folder level space. Er.. how can i explain. Ok, it's been suggested by some SEO experts that if the number of levels or folders in the domain exceeds 5 then the page drops dramatically in importance. Basically, you don't want to make it deep. As such, adding the country as the first level can be considered a waste, especially when it can be handled by the domain OR subdomain - hence the question :) So, any more thoughts on this? • Tweet count just shot up

  On our homepage we have a tweet button and counter: http://www.scirra.com This was around 600 until overnight it suddenly doubled to 1,200. It's been continuing to rise at a normal rate since. Has Twitter changed what counts as a Tweet for that counter? I've noticed competitors counts have dropped significantly. We don't buy tweets or followers, and I haven't found any spam tweets about us nor have we had any significant recent press.

• Should I add a "nofollow" attribute to download links, or disallow the URLs in robots.txt?

  I have a download link very similar to Opera's one - it's just a script that sends the file. It doesn't have an extension and there's no obvious way to tell that it's actually a download link. So since I don't want robots to crawl this link, do I need to add it to robots.txt or maybe add a "nofollow" attribute to it? I see that on Opera's website they didn't do either of this, so perhaps it's not necessary?

• host and share files in my hosting

  I currently have a domain+hosting with unlimited hosting space for our website. On the other hand, I use Dropbox to share our organizational files and photos between about 10 users. The thing is that sharing photos uses too much space for what a free Dropbox account offers. So I am thinking of taking advantage of my hosting space, but using FTP seems not to be ideal for users who are not too skilled with computers. In addition, it doesn't handle versions in case some user makes a mess of it. And using a public FTP to upload and giving them only download permission doesn't seem a good idea as I am only the CTO. So what I want is basically to implement a local Dropbox for a few users, but I'd prefer something that is not too complex to install/mantain. Thank you a lot.

• multiple godaddy domains to home router then reverse proxy to multiple internal servers [closed]

  I need someone to steer me correctly... advising on all required components. I have multiple domains with godaddy, say site1.com , site2.com, site3.net I have multiple home LAMP servers... one on say, lampsrv1 = 192.168.0.2:8080 (windows) and lampsrv2 = 192.168.0.3:9080 (linux srv2) I would like to have server1.site1.com point to lampsrv1 and server2.site1.com point to lampsrv2 . I may also want server1.site2.com also point to my lampsrv1 as an option. My thinking is - I have a dedicated linux srv1 with a reverse proxy server behind the router, ie Apache or NGINX or equivalent directing to appropriate LAMP server. It's the godaddy subdomains, cnames or redirections, etc I'm having a challenge with for starters... I have tested apache with virtual servers but can't get proxying to work based on host header info... seems to go to one address making me think its actually the apache reverse proxying that's not quite working. Finally to add to this, my router has a dynamic IP but does lease for quite a while but that would be my final piece. So, I'm sure this might be a popular question but can't seem to piece this together. I need someone who has actually configured this scenario to advise but will take other suggestions.... please indicate if you have successfully configured this.

  Been trying to install openVPN on a VPS but come into a few problems when trying to start the openvpn server. So my question is, is it possible for me to update my modules on a VPS and if so how would I do this, or is this something I'll need to try get my host to do? Thanks in advance.

• How can I find unused/unapplied CSS rules in a stylesheet?

  Hello, I've got a huge CSS file and an HTML file. I'd like to find out which rules are not used while displaying a HTML file. Are there tools for this? The CSS file has evolved over few years and from what I know no one has ever removed anything from it--people just wrote new overriding rules again and again. EDIT: It was suggested to use Dust-Me Selectors or Chrome's Web Page Performance tool. But they both work on level of selectors, and not individual rules. I've got lots of cases where a rule inside a selector is always overridden--and this is what I mostly want to get rid of. For example: body { color: white; padding: 10em; } h1 { color: black; } p { color: black; } ... ul { color: black; } All the text in my HTML is inside some wrapper element, so it is never white. body's padding always works, so of course the whole body selector cannot be removed. And I'd like to get rid of such useless rules too. EDIT: And another case of useless rule: when it duplicates existing one without changing anything: a { margin-left: 5px; color: blue; } a:hover { margin-left: 5px; color: red; } I'd happily get rid of the second margin-left... again it seems to me that those tools does not find such things. • MODX based site has been compromised, and tagged by Google as malware

  I'm the webmaster (inherited the site from the developer) for a site called kenbrook.org. The site is currently being tagged as malware infected by Google, and gives the following details: http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=kenbrook.org Sadly, this is the second time it has occurred. I posted the issue when it happened last year originally on Stackoverflow on this post, shortly after I inherited the site. At the time the fix was a simple removal of a few lines of code from a .js file, but I never did discover or resolve the vulnerability. The site is built on MODX, which neither I, nor the original builder, have any familiarity with. I've tried to check for security updates from MODX, but updating that software has been a real pain also. Sooo...what's my next step to getting this whole issue resolved? Or steps?
