• What's new in Servlet 3.1 ? - Java EE 7 moving forward

  Servlet 3.0 was released as part of Java EE 6 and made huge changes focused at ease-of-use. The idea was to leverage the latest language features such as annotations and generics and modernize how Servlets can be written. The web.xml was made as optional as possible. Servet 3.1 (JSR 340), scheduled to be part of Java EE 7, is an incremental release focusing on couple of key features and some clarifications in the specification. The main features of Servlet 3.1 are explained below: Non-blocking I/O - Servlet 3.0 allowed asynchronous request processing but only traditional I/O was permitted. This can restrict scalability of your applications. Non-blocking I/O allow to build scalable applications. TOTD #188 provide more details about how non-blocking I/O can be done using Servlet 3.1. HTTP protocol upgrade mechanism - Section 14.42 in the HTTP 1.1 specification (RFC 2616) defines an upgrade mechanism that allows to transition from HTTP 1.1 to some other, incompatible protocol. The capabilities and nature of the application-layer communication after the protocol change is entirely dependent upon the new protocol chosen. After an upgrade is negotiated between the client and the server, the subsequent requests use the new chosen protocol for message exchanges. A typical example is how WebSocket protocol is upgraded from HTTP as described in Opening Handshake section of RFC 6455. The decision to upgrade is made in Servlet.service method. This is achieved by adding a new method: HttpServletRequest.upgrade and two new interfaces: javax.servlet.http.HttpUpgradeHandler and javax.servlet.http.WebConnection. TyrusHttpUpgradeHandler shows how WebSocket protocol upgrade is done in Tyrus (Reference Implementation for Java API for WebSocket). Security enhancements Applying run-as security roles to #init and #destroy methods Session fixation attack by adding HttpServletRequest.changeSessionId and a new interface HttpSessionIdListener. You can listen for any session id changes using these methods. Default security semantic for non-specified HTTP method in <security-constraint> Clarifying the semantics if a parameter is specified in the URI and payload Miscellaneous ServletResponse.reset clears any data that exists in the buffer as well as the status code, headers. In addition, Servlet 3.1 will also clears the state of calling getServletOutputStream or getWriter. ServletResponse.setCharacterEncoding: Sets the character encoding (MIME charset) of the response being sent to the client, for example, to UTF-8. Relative protocol URL can be specified in HttpServletResponse.sendRedirect. This will allow a URL to be specified without a scheme. That means instead of specifying "http://anotherhost.com/foo/bar.jsp" as a redirect address, "//anotherhost.com/foo/bar.jsp" can be specified. In this case the scheme of the corresponding request will be used. Clarification in HttpServletRequest.getPart and .getParts without multipart configuration. Clarification that ServletContainerInitializer is independent of metadata-complete and is instantiated per web application. • I thought the new AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE in Oracle Database 11g looked at all the rows in a table so why do I see a very small sample size on some tables?

  I recently got asked this question and thought it was worth a quick blog post to explain in a little more detail what is going on with the new AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE in Oracle Database 11g and what you should expect to see in the dictionary views. Let’s take the SH.CUSTOMERS table as an example.  There are 55,500 rows in the SH.CUSTOMERS tables. If we gather statistics on the SH.CUSTOMERS using the new AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE but without collecting histogram we can check what sample size was used by looking in the USER_TABLES and USER_TAB_COL_STATISTICS dictionary views. The sample sized shown in the USER_TABLES is 55,500 rows or the entire table as expected. In USER_TAB_COL_STATISTICS most columns show 55,500 rows as the sample size except for four columns (CUST_SRC_ID, CUST_EFF_TO, CUST_MARTIAL_STATUS, CUST_INCOME_LEVEL ). The CUST_SRC_ID and CUST_EFF_TO columns have no sample size listed because there are only NULL values in these columns and the statistics gathering procedure skips NULL values. The CUST_MARTIAL_STATUS (38,072) and the CUST_INCOME_LEVEL (55,459) columns show less than 55,500 rows as their sample size because of the presence of NULL values in these columns. In the SH.CUSTOMERS table 17,428 rows have a NULL as the value for CUST_MARTIAL_STATUS column (17428+38072 = 55500), while 41 rows have a NULL values for the CUST_INCOME_LEVEL column (41+55459 = 55500). So we can confirm that the new AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE algorithm will use all non-NULL values when gathering basic table and column level statistics. Now we have clear understanding of what sample size to expect lets include histogram creation as part of the statistics gathering. Again we can look in the USER_TABLES and USER_TAB_COL_STATISTICS dictionary views to find the sample size used. The sample size seen in USER_TABLES is 55,500 rows but if we look at the column statistics we see that it is same as in previous case except  for columns  CUST_POSTAL_CODE and  CUST_CITY_ID. You will also notice that these columns now have histograms created on them. The sample size shown for these columns is not the sample size used to gather the basic column statistics. AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE still uses all the rows in the table - the NULL rows to gather the basic column statistics (55,500 rows in this case). The size shown is the sample size used to create the histogram on the column. When we create a histogram we try to build it on a sample that has approximately 5,500 non-null values for the column.  Typically all of the histograms required for a table are built from the same sample. In our example the histograms created on CUST_POSTAL_CODE and the CUST_CITY_ID were built on a single sample of ~5,500 (5,450 rows) as these columns contained only non-null values. However, if one or more of the columns that requires a histogram has null values then the sample size maybe increased in order to achieve a sample of 5,500 non-null values for those columns. n addition, if the difference between the number of nulls in the columns varies greatly, we may create multiple samples, one for the columns that have a low number of null values and one for the columns with a high number of null values.  This scheme enables us to get close to 5,500 non-null values for each column. +Maria Colgan

• Django - no module named app

  Hi, I have been trying to get an application written in django working - but it is not working at all. I have been working on for some time too - and it is working on dev-server perfectly. But I am unable to put in the production env (apahce). My project name is apstat and the app name is basic. But: A) if this module is invoked for non-asp.net application, then how or why would HttpApplication object still be created, since non-asp.net apps don’t run in the context of CLR ( and thus Asp.Net runtime also won’t run )? b) Assuming HttpApplication object is also created for non-asp.net apps, why then does the code inside Init() event handler have to check for whether HttpApplication object actually exists? Why wouldn’t it exist? Isn’t this HttpApplication object which actually instantiates Http module instance?   I am currently programming a Visual C# service to receive emails from various sources then I take certain info and organize it in a database using Regex to retrieve the deferent cell values (such as header, body, problem, cost, etc.etc.). My problem is that I am currently using a Hotmail account to email the service which the service then extracts data and writes it to a csv file; however this is all going fine an dandy except for the fact that the text is formated so when there is a "\n" or something of the sort, the program decides to not input the data that follows that into the cell. • Why shouldn't I always use nullable types in C#.

  I've been searching for some good guidance on this since the concept was introduced in .net 2.0. Why would I ever want to use non-nullable data types in c#? (A better question is why wouldn't I choose nullable types by default, and only use non-nullable types when that explicitly makes sense.) Is there a 'significant' performance hit to choosing a nullable data type over its non-nullable peer? I much prefer to check my values against null instead of Guid.empty, string.empty, DateTime.MinValue,<= 0, etc, and to work with nullable types in general. And the only reason I don't choose nullable types more often is the itchy feeling in the back of my head that makes me feel like it's more than backwards compatibility that forces that extra '?' character to explicitly allow a null value. Is there anybody out there that always (most always) chooses nullable types rather than non-nullable types? Thanks for your time,

  Note that this question is solely about the volatile keyword and the volatile guarantees: it is not about the synchronized keyword (so please don't answer "you must use synchronize" for I don't have any issue to solve: I simply want to understand the volatile guarantees (or lack of guarantees) regarding out-of-order execution). Say we have an object containing two volatile String references that are initialized to null by the constructor and that we have only one way to modify the two String: by calling setBoth(...) and that we can only set their references afterwards to non-null reference (only the constructor is allowed to set them to null). For example (it's just an example, there's no question yet): public class SO { private volatile String a; private volatile String b; public SO() { a = null; b = null; } public void setBoth( @NotNull final String one, @NotNull final String two ) { a = one; b = two; } public String getA() { return a; } public String getB() { return b; } } In setBoth(...), the line assigning the non-null parameter "a" appears before the line assigning the non-null parameter "b". Then if I do this (once again, there's no question, the question is coming next): if ( so.getB() != null ) { System.out.println( so.getA().length ); } Am I correct in my understanding that due to out-of-order execution I can get a NullPointerException? In other words: there's no guarantee that because I read a non-null "b" I'll read a non-null "a"? Because due to out-of-order (multi)processor and the way volatile works "b" could be assigned before "a"? volatile guarantees that reads subsequent to a write shall always see the last written value, but here there's an out-of-order "issue" right? (once again, the "issue" is made on purpose to try to understand the semantics of the volatile keyword and the Java Memory Model, not to solve a problem).

• My linux server takes more than an hour to boot. Suggestions?

  I am building a CentOS 5.4 system that boots off a compact flash card using a card reader that emulates an IDE drive. It literally takes about an hour to boot. The ultra-slow part occurs when Grub is loading the kernel. Once that's done, the rest of the boot process only takes about a minute to get to a login prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions? I suspect that it may have to do with UDMA. Everything IDE-related in my BIOS seems to checkout. The read performance hdparm is telling me 1.77 MB/s. Ouch! This is hash partitioned using UserId. Currently it has 2 indexes UserId : non-clustered time: clustered This table has about 20 million records. I now want to make UserId as clustered index and time as non-clustered index. is it correct to user alter index to change from clustered to non-clustered or do i drop index and recreate. does the fact that userId is used in hash partitioning have any implications to this? To me alter seems way to go but I have not yet tried this.

Then I these part are arranged in columns and the need for these columns look about the same height. Another condition: Tags you can break (I mean that if the tag "p" contains a lot of text, it can be divided into two parts, to bring in another column). I think this is a monumental task, I shall be grateful for any help.

• How to minimize total cost of shortest path tree

  I have a directed acyclic graph with positive edge-weights. It has a single source and a set of targets (vertices furthest from the source). I find the shortest paths from the source to each target. Some of these paths overlap. What I want is a shortest path tree which minimizes the total sum of weights over all edges. For example, consider two of the targets. Given all edge weights equal, if they share a single shortest path for most of their length, then that is preferable to two mostly non-overlapping shortest paths (fewer edges in the tree equals lower overall cost). Another example: two paths are non-overlapping for a small part of their length, with high cost for the non-overlapping paths, but low cost for the long shared path (low combined cost). On the other hand, two paths are non-overlapping for most of their length, with low costs for the non-overlapping paths, but high cost for the short shared path (also, low combined cost). There are many combinations. I want to find solutions with the lowest overall cost, given all the shortest paths from source to target. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Can anyone point me to relevant algorithms or analogous applications? Cheers!

• What's the best way to refactor this Rails controller?

  I'd like some advice on how to best refactor this controller. The controller builds a page of zones and modules. Page has_many zones, zone has_many modules. So zones are just a cluster of modules wrapped in a container. The problem I'm having is that some modules may have some specific queries that I don't want executed on every page, so I've had to add conditions. The conditions just test if the module is on the page, if it is the query is executed. One of the problems with this is if I add a hundred special module queries, the controller has to iterate through each one. I think I would like to see these module condition moved out of the controller as well as all the additional custom actions. • Request Multiple Maya Floating Server Licenses for extra Satellite clients

  Hello all: I am currently setting up a 'render farm' for Maya 2008 Unlimited. One Maya workstation license comes with the ability to render on eight satellite nodes. It works perfect, the remote rendering works like a charm. However, we have additional boxes to set up as satellite rendering nodes, and we have extra Maya workstation licenses. Ideally, the workstation can take two licenses and thus render on 16 nodes, but I haven't been able to figure it out, or determine if it is actually possible. It's a big project, where rendering the entire thing is in the scope of weeks, so the speed up would be worth it. Any thoughts?

• ASP.NET MVC Paging/Sorting/Filtering using the MVCContrib Grid and Pager

  This post walks you through creating a UI for paging, sorting and filtering a list of data items. It makes use of the excellent MVCContrib Grid and Pager Html UI helpers. A sample project is attached at the bottom. Our UI will eventually look like this. The application will make use of the Northwind database. The top portion of the page has a filter area region. The filter region is enclosed in a form tag. The select lists are wired up with jQuery to auto post back the form. The page has a pager region at the top and bottom of the product list. The product list has a link to display more details about a given product. The column headings are clickable for sorting and an icon shows the sort direction. Strongly Typed View Models The views are written to expect strongly typed objects. We suffix these strongly typed objects with ViewModel since they are designed specifically for passing data down to the view.  The following listing shows the ProductViewModel. This class will be used to hold information about a Product. We use attributes to specify if the property should be hidden and what its heading in the table should be. This metadata will be used by the MvcContrib Grid to render the table. You convert any IEnumerable<T> into an IPagination<T> by calling the AsPagination extension method in the MvcContrib library. It also creates a paged set of type ProductViewModel. The ProductFilterViewModel class will hold information about the different select lists and the ProductName being searched on. It will also hold state of any previously selected item in the lists and the previous search criteria (you will recall that this type of state information was stored in Viewstate when working with WebForms). With MVC there is no state storage and so all state has to be fetched and passed back to the view. The GridSortOptions is a type defined in the MvcContrib library and is used by the Grid to determine the current column being sorted on and the current sort direction. The following shows the view and partial views used to render our UI. This view is repeated twice since we want the pager UI to be available at the top and bottom of the product list. The Pager partial view is located in the Shared directory so that it can be reused across Views. The partial view “SearchResults” uses the ProductListContainer model. This partial view contains the MvcContrib Grid which needs both the ProdctPagedList and GridSortOptions to render itself. • Calling Web Service Functions Asynchronously from a Web Page

  Over on the Asp.Net forums where I moderate, a user had a problem calling a Web Service from a web page asynchronously. I tried his code on my machine and was able to reproduce the problem. I was able to solve his problem, but only after taking the long scenic route through some of the more perplexing nuances of Web Services and Proxies. Here is the fascinating story of that journey. Start with a simple Web Service     public class Service1 : System.Web.Services.WebService    {        [WebMethod]        public string HelloWorld()        {            // sleep 10 seconds            System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10 * 1000);            return "Hello World";        }    } The 10 second delay is added to make calling an asynchronous function more apparent. If you don't call the function asynchronously, it takes about 10 seconds for the page to be rendered back to the client. If the call is made from a Windows Forms application, the application freezes for about 10 seconds. Add the web service to a web site. Right-click the project and select "Add Web Reference…" Next, create a web page to call the Web Service. Note: An asp.net web page that calls an 'Async' method must have the Async property set to true in the page's header: <%@ Page Language="C#"          AutoEventWireup="true"          CodeFile="Default.aspx.cs"          Inherits="_Default"           Async='true'  %> Here is the code to create the Web Service proxy and connect the event handler. Rather than include the library it is part of, I included it in the source file to keep this example simple. Fire up the project, open up a debug output window, press the button and we get this in the debug output window: 11:29:37.94 Pre HelloWorldAsync... 11:29:37.94 Post HelloWorldAsync 11:29:48.94 EventHandler 11:29:48.94 Hello World   Sweet. The asynchronous call was made and returned immediately. About 10 seconds later, the event handler fires and we get the result. Perfect….right? Not so fast cowboy. Watch the browser during the call: What the heck? The page is waiting for 10 seconds. Even though the asynchronous call returned immediately, Asp.Net is waiting for the event to fire before it renders the page. This is NOT what we wanted. I experimented with several techniques to work around this issue. Some may erroneously describe my behavior as 'hacking' but, since no ingesting of Twinkies was involved, I do not believe hacking is the appropriate term. If you examine the proxy that was automatically created, you will find a synchronous call to HelloWorld along with an additional set of methods to make asynchronous calls. I tried the other asynchronous method supplied in the proxy:     // ---- Begin and CallBack ----------------------------------     protected void ButtonBeginHelloWorld_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        ODS("Pre BeginHelloWorld...");        MyService.BeginHelloWorld(AsyncCallback, null);        ODS("Post BeginHelloWorld");    }    public void AsyncCallback(IAsyncResult ar)    {        String Result = MyService.EndHelloWorld(ar);         ODS("AsyncCallback");        ODS("    " + Result);    } The BeginHelloWorld function in the proxy requires a callback function as a parameter. I tested it and the debug output window looked like this: 04:40:58.57 Pre BeginHelloWorld... 04:40:58.57 Post BeginHelloWorld 04:41:08.58 AsyncCallback 04:41:08.58 Hello World It works the same as before except for one critical difference: The page rendered immediately after the function call. I was worried the page object would be disposed after rendering the page but the system was smart enough to keep the page object in memory to handle the callback. Both techniques have a use: Delayed Render: Say you want to verify a credit card, look up shipping costs and confirm if an item is in stock. You could have three web service calls running in parallel and not render the page until all were finished. Nice. You can send information back to the client as part of the rendered page when all the services are finished. Immediate Render: Say you just want to start a service running and return to the client. You can do that too. However, the page gets sent to the client before the service has finished running so you will not be able to update parts of the page when the service finishes running. Summary: YourFunctionAsync() and an EventHandler will not render the page until the handler fires. BeginYourFunction() and a CallBack function will render the page as soon as possible. I found all this to be quite interesting and did a lot of searching and researching for documentation on this subject….but there isn't a lot out there. The biggest clues are the parameters that can be sent to the WSDL.exe program: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7h3ystb6(VS.100).aspx Two parameters are oldAsync and newAsync. OldAsync will create the Begin/End functions; newAsync will create the Async/Event functions. Caveat: I haven't tried this but it was stated in this article. I'll leave confirming this as an exercise for the student J. Included Code: I'm including the complete test project I created to verify the findings. The project was created with VS 2008 SP1. There is a solution file with 3 projects, the 3 projects are: Web Service Asp.Net Application Windows Forms Application To decide which program runs, you right-click a project and select "Set as Startup Project". I created and played with the Windows Forms application to see if it would reveal any secrets. I found that in the Windows Forms application, the generated proxy did NOT include the Begin/Callback functions. Those functions are only generated for Asp.Net pages. Probably for the reasons discussed earlier. Maybe those Microsoft boys and girls know what they are doing. I hope someone finds this useful. Steve Wellens
