  I've just built a new PostgreSQL server for my employers, which is happily replicating using WALs. I'm now left with the problem of verifying its performance. One nice way which came up in conversation is to break replication with the slave caught up and then direct all production traffic to both servers, discarding the responses from the new server and returning those from the current one to the clients. Once we're sure performance is OK, we re-sync the slave and can fail over with confidence. Bliss. This would require a TCP proxy capable of opening two outgoing connections for each incoming one, and discarding the data returned from one of them, which is a tricky thing to google for, it seems. Do the assembled brains know of such a thing, before I dive into libevent and write one?

• FTP error 425 failed to establish connection

  Getting "ftp error 425 failed to establish connection" when trying to connect to ftp server. Tried 2 ftp clients on 3 machines on same network and none work. However FTP works from home / mobile broadband. No ip blocks on ftp sever. Other ftp servers(differrent ip/hosts) work okay. firewall setup correct, no ports blocked. Is it possible to use a proxy for ftp a i think it's something with the ISP but taking too long to fix?

• High availability for Windows Service under Windows Server 2003

  Hi. I have a following situation: I need to deploy a windows service that listens for incoming request on tcp port (basically WCF service). I have a High Availability requirement - the service must be deployed on two servers and if the service stops (only the service, not the whole server) on one server, all the requests must be redirected to the second one. For me it looks like a basic failover scenario. How can I achieve this on Windows Server 2003? Should I use Microsoft Cluster Service or Network Load Balancing? The important part is that the process of swapping the servers should not concern the clients (the client must see only single address / single host or domain name). Thanks in advance for help.

• How secure is Windows IPSec VPN?

  I know the answer is, depends on how you configure it... But bare with me - our IPSec Site-to-Site VPN is configured by one of the most trusted hosting companies. One of our clients expressed concerns that "Windows Server 2008 Server IPSEC is not ICSA certified and lacks some of the common features for maintaining VPN stability" (they refer to the lack of "auto keep live" feature). They also are saying that "Windows platforms are not recommended as VPN endpoints due to security concerns and this is one reason that the ICSA testing labs will not certify it as a valid IPSEC solution" (I couldn't find a proof to this one) Are there any whitepapers or references that can prove the security of Windows IPSec implementation? • cPanel webmail roundcube direct login

  I have a small web hosting that I offer along my web development/design services. I run cent os with cPanel on it and I'd like to have my clients use roundcube by default without ever seeing cpanels page for picking webmail app (squirrel/horde/roundcube). I manage everything on the server so they don't need access to additional features that can be found on that page. So basically, how can I make www.somepage.com/webmail go directly to roundcube for every single account on my server. I know how to do it manually for each account, but that's a pain to do. Thanks!

• Windows/Samba connection error

  I have a Linux fileserver serving up /home for linux and windows users. I was able to connect from my windows client, but not from a DC. Then suddenly I could connect from the DC too. The linux servers run Centrify clients, and as such are part of the domain. All on same subnet. This is what the the log.smbd says, repeatedly: [2010/02/11 11:25:57, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(534) read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.200.3. Error = Connection reset by peer On Windows it appeared as an "unknown error". EDIT: the error code is "0x80004005". We are developing a system depended on the samba share, and are worried this will appear again. It would be nice to pin point the root of this. Any ideas what this might be? Places to look?

• DNS and IPs - Does DNS send the IP back to the client?

  I ran across a site that talked about routing all cients requesting by IP to a "dead end." The clients accessing the site via ip it claimed were typically automated exploit tools and bots. Legitimate users type in the web address by it's domain question. With this context in mind, I don't really understand how DNS really works. I thought it worked by sending an IP back to a client for the requested DNS (like a phone book.) The client then uses the IP to access the site.   Scenario: I have a main server that is used for pagebuilding/storing master data, and is accessed by a few clients on site. This company also has multiple branches with their own server that that connect to locally, but need to work with all the same data, and have it synchronized across all servers in real (or close) time. Is there a way/specific server OS that can sync live data across all of these servers? These servers would also need to be able to: Configure AFP, FTP, CIFS, SMB Continue to host their web server and database server in a Microsoft environment, but move the file server off to commodity hardware Just wondering if this is even possible.

  Is it possible to trick the GoGo Inflight WiFi on airlines into thinking that you have a mobile device instead of a laptop? It seems like most airlines that offer in flight wireless these days use GoGo. They offer different pricing for mobile and laptops. It seems like they are checking the browser's user agent. Out of curiosity, is it possible to use a Firefox extension like this one to spoof the user-agent and allow a laptop to access the internet under a GoGo mobile plan? How would GoGo handle something like an IMAP email client, like Thunderbird. Do IMAP clients have a user-agent field as well that would normally identify whether the mail client is running on a laptop or mobile device?

  I have searched through all the redirects posted buy others and cant quite find the answer to my problem. I have a website with over 3000 pages and we are getting duplication issues within google. We want to keep everything in the parent directory to be http except our contact.php and login.php page. We then have 3 folders that must be secured. admin, clients, customers I have tried using the following code in seperate .htaccess files for each folder, but I keep getting a conflict when I try and I am still trying to find a good solution for the home directory. • Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

  Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers... • Right Clicking Network File Very Slow Over VPN

  I am having real troubles with a VPN connection. The VPN connection is not used for a internet connection just for file browsing. File browsing is slow, taking about 3-4 seconds to bring up a list of folders. I can live with this, however the problem is when I right click on a file. Sometimes the right click menu comes up instantly but sometimes it brings up the wait icon for anywhere between 30 seconds to a few minutes before displaying the menu. I ran speedtest.net and the results were: 3.08 Down/0.13 Up (Mbps) 0.13Mbps = 16kbps upload. So I am not experiencing miracles with opening files. A 120kb file can take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds. Sometimes transfering/opening files happens as expected other times its slow but the real issue is with the right click as mentioned. Anyone have any ideas? Using PPTP Clients are all windows 7 pro

  I've got haproxy set up with keepalived for load balancing and ip failover of a percona cluster, and since it works great I'd like to use the same lb / failover for another service/daemon. I've configured haproxy this way: listen my_service 0.0.0.0:4567 mode tcp balance leastconn option tcpka contimeout 500000 clitimeout 500000 srvtimeout 500000 server host1 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1:4567 check port 4567 inter 5000 rise 3 fall 3 server host2 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx2:4567 check port 4567 inter 5000 rise 3 fall 3 The load balancing works fine, but the service sees the IP of the load balancer instead of the actual IPs of the clients. In http mode it's quite easy to have haproxy pass along the remote IP, but how do I do in tcp mode? This is critical due to the nature of the service I need to load balance. Thanks! Vito

  Hi, I am installing the following on a low memory system: vnc4server xinetd xterm openbox obconf I will only occasionally be logging into the vncs for some admin work. My question is: 1) Does xinetd take memory / cpu even when vncserver is not running? If so, can I "run" xinetd on demand (how)? And if no, any idea how much memory it will take when vncserver is not running? 2) Does vncserver take substantial memory when no clients are connected? 3) Do openbox/obconf take memory when vncserver is running but no client are connected? 4) Do openbox/obconf take memory when no vncserver is running? thanks JP

• Wrong DNS for just one site on development machine

  www.superyoink.de is my clients' website. I can access it from any machine except my development one. If I ping it on my development machine, I get 80.67.28.107 - this is wrong. My laptop, next to me, is able to resolve it correctly. I have tried putting correct address into hosts like so: 93.187.232.191 www.superyoink.de Still resolves to wrong address. I can enter bogus DNS server addresses so nothing works. But www.superyoink.de still resolves to 80.67.28.107. Rebooted, did ipconfig /flushdns nothing seems to work. I run 32 bit Vista. My impression is that it has stored the wrong dns resolution somewhere and is not even trying the DNS servers. But where? Help please!

  I have installed 2 DC's on my network (W2K8 R2) both serve as a replicate DC on my domain. On one of them (DC1) there is also a DHCP server running. On both I have a DNS server running. I am trying to understand the difference in the settings within the DHCP of Server Options and Scope Options. As I understand it: On the server options, I should put an external DNS for system (lets say 8.8.8.8 - google) And on the scope options, I should put both my internal dc1 and dc2 IP's as the server. - which are than distributed to my domain clients. Is that correct? Is there a better way? Do I need to add loopback address as well?

  I have configured a couple of VLANs on a Cisco Catalyst switch, i will put all the ports that clients is connected to, into these VLANs. I want to configure the native VLAN [vlan 1] as management VLAN so i can use a telnet client to connect to the switch. How can i block all but one specific IP-address to telnet into the switch? As i understand vlan 1 has many task regarding different protocols and i do not want to break that but only allow one specific IP-address to connect to the switch with a telnet client [actually the gateway ip address of the switch].

As described in "Manually publish the CRL": Clients that have a cached copy of the previously-published CRL or delta CRL will continue using it until its validity period has expired, even though a new CRL has been published. Manually publishing a CRL does not affect cached copies of CRLs that are still valid; it only makes a new CRL available for systems that do not have a valid CRL.

  I am developing an application which uses embedded tomcat server 7, and deploys a web application on embedded server. My application accesses the embedded webapp through Rest APIs, but my clients are getting Connection Timed Out exceptions and port is also not blocked. I never gets this exception when I install this application on my local machine. Some points: IP address is used in the host name part (They are able to access this IP address on other port) Port is not blocked We are using Apache HttpClient library to access the URL Timeout interval seems not to be an issue. What are the possible reasons for this exception Connection Timed Out? or How can I simulate this problem on my local machine? Any pointers would be helpful.

  I am trying to get all users of particular notebooks to make the users h drive offline. i know you can do it manually but is there a way to set this value somewhere so that users dont have to do it themselves? I am running 2008r2 domain controllers and windows 7 clients. I have folder redirection enabled but i want to make the users h: available to them when they are offline. I know the group policies are located in the computer configurationPoliciesadministrative templatesNetwork but there doesnt seem to be any place to select which folders/drives will be offline files without a users input. • FTP transfer timeouts while uploading small files

  I have this problem that when I need to transfer some files (mostly small files < 100KB) the connections time out. Well actually it uploads one file and it fails on the next until my client reconnects to the server and the same thing happens over and over again. I googled the problem and some said that switching from passive mode to active mode could solve the it but it didn't work for me. Even continuously pinging the server to keep the connection alive was to no avail. P.S. I have root access to the server. Update: I'm running ProFTPD on a CentOS vps. I tried a few clients (FireFTP, FileZilla) all having the same problem.

• Remote support via VPN without split tunnel

  my title might not be very clear, but I'll explain my setup in more detail now. We have several customers (companies) that need to be remotely supported. At these customers we have servers running with our software that needs to be serviced. These servers are (almost) never connected to the internet. For this we have multiple PC's running VPN clients. These PC's run a VNC server so our service engineers can login from their home laptop remotely to these PC's and connect from there to our customer via the VPN connection on the PC. The problem is however that several customers do not allow split tunneling. That means that when we connect via VPN to such a customer the VNC connection drops. Our current workaround is using a Citrix VM which we control via XenCenter console, but it's quite slow. Are there common solutions to handle this?

  What issues have people encountered with older OS's (2000, XP) and olders versions of Microsoft Office (2000, XP, 2003) with the 'Microsoft Office Compitibility Pack'? I have a couple of Windows 2000 client PC's encountering different errors when attempting to open .docx or .xlsx documents, some with Office XP and the others with Office 2003. Reading through forums it appears that the different versions of the compatibility pack, not all were compatible with Windows 2000 (versions 3 & 4 are not). There are also Service Packs for the Compatibility Pack. With these Windows 2000 clients, it seems i need the Compatibility Pack version 2, then to install the Service Packs, yet i'm unable to find a link for version 2 of it. First error message: "This is a pre-release version of the Compatibilty Pack and can open pre-release Office 2007 files only." Is solved below. Second error message: "The converter failed to open the file." Is still on going.

• how to connect public web server to internal LAN

  I have a VPS which is my public web server for all my clients. It's running server 2008 and I would like to have it connect via secure connection to my internal LAN. I would like this to be a route so access is bi-derectional. Have read about Server & Domain isolation, but am concerned this may prevent public views to the webs sites on the server. I currently have a PPTP tunnel, but I'm wanting better security (IPSec or SSL etc) and it's not given my bi derectional access. (In fact my backups aren't copying accross but this could be an acl issue) The goal is to provide easy/automated backups of data & sql db's to my internal LAN, as well as a means to provision new sites & db's from a workflow occuring internally. Internal lan is windows based with ISA 2006 at the perimeter. Thanks
