• Software to cache a web application for use offline

  My boss quite regularly has to demo our web application to clients in a situation with no wifi available and sketchy 3G access, quite often the 3G lets him down. I have considered setting a copy of our server up in a virtual machine on his laptop so he could demo it offline, but I fear this will just introduce more headaches when he forgets how to boot the VM up. What I'd ideally like is an app that records you logging into a web app, saves copies of all the pages and ties the links and buttons you click up to offline copies of the pages it saves. So you could run through the demonstration you're going to give and have it cache the pages. When you then click the same buttons and links in offline mode it will present the relevant offline pages. Does such a thing exist? Can anyone recommend any alternative solutions to this problem? Thanks, Anthony

• What is the maximum number of TCP connections I can have in Windows Server 2008?

  I would like to have as many connections (single connections from many different clients) as humanly possible in a server running on Windows Server 2008, in order to support a Comet-style application. The application is written in C#. The connections will not be chatty, they just need to be open (and stay open). Buying boatloads of memory and fast CPUs are not a problem. As far as I can tell, I will be limited to 65k simultaneous open connections per NIC - the maximum number of ports. Is this accurate? Or can I go beyond 65k connections / NIC somehow? It seems like there are server products for Linux at least that support hundreds of thousands of connections. How do they do this?

• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again?   I have found a way to make reverse-proxy to an external IP. Here is how someone making a request will see it's request being passed: Clients sends request Request reaches the Datacenter one in some place That datacenter, acting as a reverse proxy will redirect the same exact request to another datacenter. The datacenter will then process the request Although, this only works with TCP/HTTP (Looking currently at HaProxy). I am hosting game servers at the other datacenter (where the proxy is not) that are using UDP protocol. Do you know how can I setup a reverse proxy using the UDP protocol.

• Sending large files - do any vendors sell their solution?

  We currently have an account with www.mailbigfile.com to allow us to send & receive files which exceed our client's email limits. In our industry, a 10MB limit is not unknown. Mailbigfile works fine for what it is but increasingly, our clients are starting to block it as a security risk. A solution would be for us to license the software and run it from our own web server which is far less likely to be blocked. Does anyone know of vendors in this market? We are looking at web collaboration systems but that's a much bigger project. The technology behind www.mailbigfile.com isn't that complex (http upload, email notification and then http download) so I'm hoping it won't be very expensive. Cheers, Rob.

• How can i set new domains to respond to my server

  I would like to create a page for new clients in my hosting. When someone register a domain, sometimes that person don't have a dns, or the hosting didn't created the account. So the page will not respond. Is there any way to set in my primary domain DNS to respond to all domains pointing to me, to a specific new page like home/resseler/public_html/soon.html ? Like a CNAME myserver.com/soon.html CNAME ~~all domains pointing to my ns1 and ns2. A normal default page for news domains pointed to my server without account creation.

• Replacing sick NTP server source and re-synching (with internal time currently 2 minutes late)

  One of the external NTP servers (the primary one--currently) we're using as source seems to not be responding to NTP calls. Unfortunately, on our core router (Cisco 6509), the NTP functionality hasn't switched to the secondary NTP external server as it was expected. As a result, our core router which is pretty much our main internal NTP source is 2 minutes late. I'm planning to fix the external router issue by making the external NTP source be the one currently working. I'm wondering, how much will a 2 minute change affect my users and services? Specially since these days, we're heavily relying on certificate-based authentication. We're a Windows/Cisco shop. • Is it still "wrong" to require TLS on incoming SMTP messages

  According to the STARTTLS Spec Section 5: A publicly-referenced SMTP server MUST NOT require use of the STARTTLS extension in order to deliver mail locally. This rule prevents the STARTTLS extension from damaging the interoperability of the Internet's SMTP infrastructure. A publicly-referenced SMTP server is an SMTP server which runs on port 25 of an Internet host listed in the MX record (or A record if an MX record is not present) for the domain name on the right hand side of an Internet mail address. However, this spec was written in 1999, and considering it's 2014, I'd expect most SMTP clients, servers, and relays to have some kind of implementation of STARTTLS. How much email can I expect to lose if I require TLS for incoming messages?

• How can I get pidgin to replace animations/graphics with their alt text?

  I have a few contacts who use annoying text-to-animation plugins in their clients, that do things like turn the word "hi" into an animation of Kermit the Frog waving at me, or other equally annoying non-sense. This is even more annoying when it does the conversion mid-word, like turning "This" into "T<Kermit waving>s". To get around this annoying behavior, I often find myself copying their text from pidgin, and pasting into a text editor, which always replaces the animations with their original text (presumably by way of some html ALT tag, or the moral equivalent). Obviously pidgin knows what the original text was, because it was able to provide that text to the copy buffer. So how can I get Pidgin to just show me the original text, as if there were no annoying animations in the first place?

• What Windows licenses are required to run additional terminal service sessions

  We need to build out a server running Windows 2008 R2 Standard that can allow up to 10 simultaneous RDP/Terminal Services connections and I'm a little confused about how the CAL licenses work. From one source I was told I needed 10 "server CALs" and an additional 10 "RDP CALs" (total of 20 CALs). From another, I was told I just needed the 10 "RDP CALs", which implicitly came with the server CAL. The Microsoft licensing website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-rds.aspx) seems to support scenario #1, but it is still not real clear what those server CALs are needed for. Also, can we use the 2 "built-in" RDP clients, meaning we only need to purchase 8 CALs to reach a total of 10?

  Hi, Friend of mine broke his Windows (doesn't boot). I will probably have to reinstall OS. I want to mount his hard drive in my OS to beck up some important files. He sad he uses Outlook express, but he Use Vista so I'm not sure it's Vistas Mail Client or Outlook. What files I have to copy to backup mail and adders book from Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail? Is it any good program for doing it automatically (for Linux or Windows)? If there are tools or special procedures for other mail clients (for example Thunderbird) you can also name them to make this question more generic.

  I am using sshd, and allow logins with public key authentication. I want to allow select users to log in with a PAM two-factor authentication module. Is there any way I can allow PAM two-factor authentication for a specifc user? I don't want users - By the same token - I only want to enable password authentication for specific accounts. I want my SSH daemon to reject the password authentication attempts to thwart would-be hackers into thinking that I will not accept password authentication - except for the case in which someone knows my heavily guarded secret account, which is password enabled. I want to do this for cases in which my SSH clients will not let me do either secret key, or two-factor authentication.

• Looking for something like Google's Picasa [closed]

  I almost like Picasa, but there are two issues that irk me and I wondered if anyone knew of an application that does what Picasa does but without the following problems: Network drives. Picasa is hopeless with network drives. Ideally, I'd like photos to be stored remotely and thumbnail databases to be stored locally with a client-server set-up to update client databases. The main aim is to get updates propagated to clients efficently, reduce network bandwidth and have quick browsing on the client. It needs to be snappy when used over a wireless network. This is just a minor point but the folder view looks awful, especially when it uses those tiny thumbnails. (Also, what is it with folders being drawn vertically. Having spent years looking at folders orientated horizontally, turning them on their side looks so wrong.)

  I'm working with Hosted SharePoint 2007 with Forms Server. I need to allow client access to submit HTML forms designed in Infopath. Problem is, I need to make sure the clients don't see the library. There is sensitive data that will be on these forms. I also need to have a repeated library that is based on the Internal Admin records and requirements. Outside of making a seperate library per customer, does anyone have any suggestions? My Goal: 1: Customers enter their requests through a link or provided page 2: Internally address the requests and perform required arrangements, add billing and payment fields 3: Have SharePoint metrics, reports, etc... based on the provided intormation and status. • httpd service keep restarting. after 15-20 mins

  I have recently purchased Dedicated Server which has 16bg ram and 1TB Harddisk. It has Cpanel and for firewall CSF Installd. I am mainly going to install it for File hosting service. Now the day i moved my httpd service keep restarting every 15-20 mins. It becomes unresponsive after that so have to manually restart it. • How to backup data on debian vps to dropbox?

  I have really simple private VPS with some webpages and music server. I want to backup some configs and some scripts to dropbox or similar service. Server has no gui (except simple ssh X forwarding, which is neither convenient for constant usage and does not provide full desktop) everything is controlled through ssh. So my question would is it possible to setup dropbox client for command line use? How? Is there any alternatives for dropbox, which would have command line clients? • How do large companies handle software updates for users without administrative rights?

  I just started working for a small-medium size company doing IT support. Maybe 150 or less users. Right now every user has administrative rights to their own machine. This allows them to install updates or whatever else they would like to. I'm tired of getting on user's machines that are bloated with crap they put on themselves. So my first thought would be to take away administrative rights to their computer. This would also have other advantages such as preventing a lot of drive-by malware on the web etc. The problem arises that users are unable to install updates. (Even though I find most ignore these anyway) How do large companies handle software updates on all client machines? EDIT: Windows environment. Most servers are Windows Server 2003 Enterprise. Clients are all Windows. Win XP, Vista, and 7.

• Hiding a HTTP Auth-Realm by sending 404 to non-known IPs?

  I have an Apache (2.2) serving a web-app on example.com. That web-app has a debug-page reachable via example.com/debug. /debug is currently protected with a HTTP basic auth. As there is only a very small user-base who has access to the debug-page, I would like to hide it based on IP address and return 404 to clients not accessing from our VPN. Serving a 404 based on IP-address only is easy and is described in http://serverfault.com/a/13071. But as soon I add authentication, the users see a 401 instead of a 404. • Looking for alternative to NetNewsWire and Google Reader

  I have used NetNewsWire on both Mac and iPhone for years, and have been reasonably happy. Unfortunately the latest version of NNW for Mac, which I just upgraded to, now matches Google Reader's policy of marking items read after 30 days. The older version I had been using did not do this. I regularly keep unread items for way longer than 30 days, and do eventually read them, so this is a major bummer for me. The iPhone version has behaved this way forever, but I was ok with that as long as I had the full list on my desktop. Keeping in sync between the iPhone and Mac is very important, so I need to find another online solution with clients available on both sides. I've done a little digging but haven't found much; it seems like Google has pretty much taken over this space. Any suggestions?

• How do I set zone priority in Microsoft DNS?

  I have a standard small network setup (20 users) on Active Directory. All Windows machines have a primary DNS server as the AD and a secondary DNS server as Google PDNS. I want to setup a DNS entry that exists in real DNS but set it up on our DC so that local requests would route this public domain to a local development machine on the network. I setup the zone in DNS which results in the clients resolving the public FQDN to our internal IP. However, sometimes it still resolves to the "real" value (I check by pinging it). Is there some way to give the zone definition in my DC DNS higher priority? Or will the client that has secondary public DNS always at sometimes have a competing entry for this zone?

• Using Folder Redirection GPO and Offline Files and Folders

  I want to use Folder Redirection to redirect user's My Documents to a network share. First question is: What is best practices for mapping the drive? Should I use the profile tab in AD with the %username% variable, or a net use logon script, or something else? Second question is: How do I deal with laptops and syncing the network with the local storage? I want to have 2-way syncing so if they manually map their networked home drive and edit it from a different computer, it will sync the newer version to their My Documents folder the next time they connect their normal work computer. I also want to be sure that if they edit a file offline on their laptop while away from the office, that the network version syncs the changes the next time they connect that laptop. Please advise best practices for this scenario in a 2008 R2/Win7 environment. I am also interested in Mac clients for this environment, and while I am very Mac savvy, I would like to hear what others consider to be best practices for Mac network homedirs in a Win environment.

• Solaris TCP/IP performance tuning

  I am trying to tune a high message traffic system running on Solaris. The architecture is a large number (600) of clients which connect via TCP to a big Solaris server and then send/receive relatively small messages (.5 to 1K payload) at high rates. The goal is to minimize the latency of each message processed. I suspect that the TCP stack of the server is getting overwhelmed by all the traffic. What are some commands/metrics that I can use to confirm this, and in case this is true, what is the best way to alleviate this bottleneck? PS I posted this on StackOverflow originally. One person suggested snoop and dtrace. dtrace seems pretty general - are there any additional pointers on how to use it to diagnose TCP issues?

  We use a Barracuda Spam Filter at work, and we also provide a mass emailing program to some of clients that send out newsletters. Lately one of them's been composing his latest company newsletter and has been trying to send preview messages to himself, but they've actually been quarantined by Barracuda as potential spam, even though they aren't. I can see the breakdown of the spam scoring headers in Barracuda, but I'm not sure what certain rules mean. Where do I find descriptions of these custom rules? And what does "images with 2000-2400 bytes of words" mean? Is that referring to the file size of the image, or something about the attributes on the <img> tag?

• IM and File Transfers Integrated With VoIP

  I have an Asterisk box serving an office of people. I'd like to provide instant messaging and file sharing capabilities alongside the voice and video capabilities provided by Asterisk (ala Windows Live Messenger, Skype etc). Asterisk does not seem to offer IM outside the context of a SIP call, nor am I aware that it provides file transferring capabilities whatsoever. The clients will be using Jitsi, so there are many protocols to choose from, but I'd like to provide as much integration as possible between the VoIP and IM/file transfer (ideally a single account that facilitates voice/video and IM/file transfer). Is this possible, and if not, what would be the most appropriate alternative? Thank you.
