• Installing gnome on Linode with Ubuntu 9.10 x64 - remote VNC/RDP

  Hi, I'm a self confessed Linux newbie, having lived and worked mostly within the Windows world for most of my life. I'm making the effort to try moving my virtual host from a Windows box to a Linode instance to try and better learn Linux, and one of the uses I occasionally have with my current Windows VPS is to RDP into it and browse the internet. I'm aware that this is probably not best practice (from either performance or security), and most of the time I will be learning from the shell, but I do occasionally need to boot into a GUI. • ssh tunnel error "ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host"

  I'm trying to use an ssh tunnel from my office machine to my home machine, and get an error when I try to use it. What I'm doing is starting one shell like so: ssh -gL 12345:my.home.domain:22 my.home.domain This is giving me a proper shell, no problem. What I normally do then is ssh to my home machine through this office machine, like so: ssh -p 12345 127.0.0.1 This has always worked for me, until last week, when I set up a new system on my home machine (switching from Ubuntu to Debian). Now I get an error. I can still open up my initial ssh connection, but when I try to use that tunnel, I get (on the office machine) this error: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host Also, when that happens, the open shell that I have the tunnelling set up through gets this line spat out at it: channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection timed out At which point, I'm at a loss. If any more info is needed, I'll be happy to post it. ============= further to that ============== After fiddling around further, I've found that I'm getting a different response from the server (my home machine that is) when I try to telnet in on the various ports. If I try: telnet my.home.domain 22 I get this back: Trying <my ip address>... Connected to <my domain>. Escape character is '^]'. SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.5p1 Debian-6+squeeze2 Which is what I would expect. After setting up the tunnel though, and then telnetting to that, I see this response: Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to 127.0.0.1.   I know it has been asked before, but I would like it to happen in real time and transparently (without the need to open a separate FTP client such as FileZilla). For example, if I edit a text file in the local folder and then save it, it should immediately detect it and push the changes to the remote folder. It can be unidirectional (changes made on the local folder has to be pushed to the remote folder but the reverse is not necessary). It should also be able to specify some excluded files/folders which do not need to be in sync. Is there such an application that you know of?

• Unknown protocol when trying to connect to remote host wit stunnel

  I'm trying to set up a stunnel for WebDav on Windows. I want to connect 80 port on my local interface to 443 on another machine in my network. I can ping the machine remote machine. However when I use the tunnel, I'm getting this error all the time SSL state (accept): before/accept initialization SSL_accept: 140760FC: error:140760FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_CLIENT_HELLO:unknown protocol There is nothing in the logs on the other machine and here's my stunnel connection config [https] accept = 127.0.0.2:80 connect = 10.0.0.60:443 verify = 0 I've set it up to accept all certificates so this shouldn't be a problem with a self-signed certificate remote host uses. Does anyone knows what might be the problem that this connection cannot be eastablished?

• Question about Remote WAN IP on NetGear FVS336G VPN setup

  I wanted to be able to have a VPN connection to my home network so I purchased the FVS336G because the reviews said it was easy set up. I am sure it is for someone that knows what needs to be entered it is easy, but I am a little confused. Using the VPN wizard I choose VPN Client as the tunnel connection, enter key, etc... but then I get to the "What is the remote WAN's IP or Internet Name" and "What is the local WAN's IP address or Internet Name" I am lost. I am probably being really dumb, but I am not sure what I need to put in here. Is the remote WAN ip the ip from the outside world to my cable modem? Is the local ip the ip to my FVS336G? Any help would be appreciated.

  I have Eclipse projects and ".project" file in them, the directory structure looks like 'myProject/.project'. I want to copy these '.project' files to another directory, but I want the enclosing directory name to be preserved. Let's say I have 'a/myProject/.project', I want to copy 'myProject/.project' to 'b', so it be 'b/myProject/.project', but 'b/myProject' doesn't exist. When I try in a: cp -r ./myProject/.project ../b it copies only '.project' file itself, without 'myProject' directory. Please advise.

  I'm getting the below error message while trying to browse to a local share on a Windows Server 2003 machine: Windows cannot find ### this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an Association in the folder options control panel The server is on the network, has an assigned IP address, can access the internet and is otherwise functioning normally. I realise this message can occur when opening a document or file which has no application associated with it, but I'm trying to access a share. What's going on here?

• IIS SmtpSVC - Adding remote domains on the fly

  Since I am using SMTPSVC from IIS to send all mail out I have noticed some domains that reject mail regarding LFs and similar SMTP day to day basis problems. So I mostly re route these domains by using smarthosts. Now I aslo read that on IIS7 or most of them when you add a remote domain to domains you must restart SMTPSVC to take effect. I also enabled METABASE editing. So I also hoped that this will help me add remote domains on the fly. But it's not working. Should I use another SMTP: -hmailserver or similar to route DOMAINS by smarthost. We used a smarthost configuration before but ISP smarthost gets a lot on RBL Blacklist so mail comes back. Since DNS MX direct sending is more work because of troublesome domains now I got more work to monitor SMTP logs. Thank you in advance.

I have images that is on my supplier’s remote server and my site is on Host Gator the only way to get the images show up on my site is to connect to their server using links to the images (per agreement). They tell me that ZenCart PHP does not allow you to serve images from a remote host.   OK, I'm a C# programmer that is trying to streamline the deployment of a custom windows form app I inherited and built an installer for with WiX (this app will need to be reinstalled regularly as I'm making changes to it). I'm not really used to admin type things (or vbs, or WMI, or terminal servers, or Citrix, and even WiX and MSI are not things I usually deal with) but so far I put together some vbs and have an end goal in mind. The msi does work, and I've installed it from the mapped O: drive on my dev machine and while RDP'd to a citrix machine. • Run a batch file before user logs into Windows 2003 R2?

  I have an Amazon EC2 machine (Windows Server 2003 R2) where I want to run a script (.bat file) when the Windows Server 2003 R2 machine boots up. This need to run BEFORE any user logs in. Ideally I'd like to extend the same work-around on my Windows Server 2008 R2 instances too - but Windows Server 2003 R2 is critical for me as of now. Purely as FYI, the .bat file updates the DDNS records so the EC2 machine doesn't need to consume static IPs.
