• Restore monitor detection to one only or restore start menu to bottom

  I have a co-worker that is no longer able to see his start menu. He used to have it pinned to the left edge of his screen. I tried to troubleshoot it a bit and discovered if we do Windows + R then "cmd" [enter] the command prompt opens (but we don't see the start menu or run box), meaning the start menu is somewhere, just off screen. Restarting doesn't help. Is there some way to force Windows to think it only has a single monitor? It seems to "think" it has two but there's only one and we can get the Start menu back. Or, is there a way to restore the start menu to the bottom? Additional info We are able to right-click the desktop for display settings, etc. We can also get into Windows Explorer (via Ctrl + E) so if we need any of that to restore settings we can do it.

• How to setup Hadoop cluster so that it accepts mapreduce jobs from remote computers?

  There is a computer I use for Hadoop map/reduce testing. This computer runs 4 Linux virtual machines (using Oracle virtual box). Each of them has Cloudera with Hadoop (distribution c3u4) installed and serves as a node of Hadoop cluster. One of those 4 nodes is master node running namenode and jobtracker, others are slave nodes. Normally I use this cluster from local network for testing. However when I try to access it from another network I cannot send any jobs to it. The computer running Hadoop cluster has public IP and can be reached over internet for another services. For example I am able to get HDFS (namenode) administration site and map/reduce (jobtracker) administration site (on ports 50070 and 50030 respectively) from remote network. Also it is possible to use Hue. Ports 8020 and 8021 are both allowed. What is blocking my map/reduce job submits from reaching the cluster? Is there some setting that I must change first in order to be able to submit map/reduce jobs remotely? • Can I install Microsoft Visual Web Developer w/o a SQL Server Express installation?

  When I attempt to install Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, it forces an installation of SQL Server 2008 Express, which is okay. However, it forces it to have the instance name SQLEXPRESS instead being the default instance. I tried installing SQL Server 2008 Express first, but the Web Platform Installer 3.0 still wants to download and install the named instance, which then I have to uninstall. I'm putting together a guide that several others in my group will follow, so I'd like to not have to tell them to "install, then uninstall". So, is there any reasonable way to either (1) install VWD w/o SS, or (2) install VWD but configure SS do use the default instance?

• Windows XP SP3 on Macbook Has Limited Disk Space

  Hi Guys, I setup Windows XP SP3 on a 40 GB partition using bootcamp (partition formatted for NTFS). For some reason, the hard drive properties only show ~3 GB of space available. Funny thing is though, I've hardly installed anything on the system... and if I open the windows explorer, select all directories, and check properties, it appears that I'm only using 11 GB of space. What gives? I thought there might be hidden files/folders so I enabled the option to show it but still nada. Has anyone come across this before? Any suggestions for how to proceed here?

• Thunderbird "undo send" feature (like in Gmail)?

  I was wondering if there exists a thunderbird addon that gives similar functionality as Google's "undo send" feature? This basically just delays the sent message for a few seconds allowing the user to cancel the send if desired. I find this very useful in Gmail and would love the option now that I started using thunderbird. I've seen the send later addon, but this isn't really what I want. I want something very similar to Google's feature where it automatically delays each message before sending with an easy to access option to cancel the send. Thanks!

• Make headphone output mono.

  my headphones are stereo but I would like the sound from the left and right to be combined then sent to both headphones. The reason is I'm watching a video where the people speaking are in the right ear as well as the music but they never speak in the left ear (it is not because they on the right side of the screen) If I take the right headphone off then I only hear the music in my left and there is no speaking.

• Setup LAN to serve webpages and voip and access to the web site from inside LAN with domain name

  I'd like to know if it will work: I have my domain and I´m serving a webpage in a nginx to the internet, but if I type my domain in my laptop inside LAN I access to my modem/router configuration, I cannot access to the web server unless I type the IP address. I would like to add a Bind server after the modem/router - (port forward, ports 80 and 5060), if the request is www.mydomain.com bind should resolve the nginx IP address and serve it, and if it is a voip request should address to the voip server and if I'd like to access to the website from inside LAN I'd like to type mydomain.com. Could I do it with this configuration? Do I need something else? Thanks in advace!

It doesn't happen on all of our clients either and it happens randomly on those who it does happen. • Persistent static routes fail on MacOS 10.6.5 startup!

  I'm unable to get static routes to persist a reboot on Mac OS 10.6.5. I've tried all of the methods prescribed in Google search results, and previous posts on this site. I've tried manually creating a launchd daemon, and used RouteSplit's launchd daemon to no avail. It's clear that the interface is not ready when these methods attempt to apply the route. This workstation in question is getting its IP from DHCP and probably hasn't gotten its DHCP lease when the command runs. We're able to apply the route by hand when logged in, but not through startup methods. Is there another way to apply this route by sneaking the command into something later, but before the login window appears to the user? Here is some relevant log info from system.log. I've tried adding extra "sleep" and "ipconfig waitall" statements later in the script but this doesn't fly. • How to consistently enable screen sharing with iChat

  I am unable to consistently get screen sharing in iChat to work. When I select an online buddy, under the Buddies menu the options "Share my screen with Bob" and "Ask to Share Bob's Screen" are disabled. Sometimes starting a chat with that person will enable the screen sharing but often not. Once its enabled it works fine but I have no idea what the key is to getting it enabled. It seems fairly random when it works. This is over the public internet using Google Talk. Both ends are running OSX 10.5.

• Why is Excel 2010/2013 taking 10 seconds open any file?

  I have a fast Windows 7 PC with two SSDs and 16GB of RAM, so I'm used to programs loading very fast. But recently, for no reason I can figure out, Excel has started taking way too long to open Excel files (of any size--even blank files). This is occurring with Excel 2010 and with Excel 2013 after I upgraded, hoping to solve the problem. Here a couple scenarios: If I start Excel directly, it opens almost instantly. No problem there. If I start Excel directly, and then open any Excel file (.xls or .xlsx), it loads almost instantly. Still no problem BUT if I attempt to open any Excel file directly, with Excel not running, it consistently takes 10-11 seconds for Excel to start. I get no error messages, just a spinning cursor for 10-11 seconds, and then the file opens. During the delay while Excel is trying to start, I'm not really seeing any discernible spike in CPU or memory usage, other than explorer.exe. This problem is only occurring with Excel, not Word or any other program I'm aware of. I've searched around quite a bit on this question and found various others who have experienced it, but the solutions that worked for them are not working for me. For a few people it was a problem with scanning network drives, but my problem is purely with local files; I have no network drives, and the problem persists even with all network connections disabled. Some people suggested worksheets with corrupted formulas or links, but I'm experiencing this with ANY Excel file: even blank worksheets. Others thought it was a problem with add-ins, but I have all Excel add-ins disabled (as far as I can tell). One person solved it by disabling a "clipboard manager" process that was running in the background, but I don't have that. I've disabled as many startup and background processes as I can, but the problem persists. I've run malware scans, disk cleanup, CCleaner, and installed Excel 2013. I've deleted temporary files, enabled SuperFetch, and edited registry keys. Still can't get rid of the problem. Any ideas? My system details: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit, Excel 2013 32-bit, 16GB RAM, all programs installed on SSD.

• MacBook Pro battery capacity 65K mAh

  I have a 15" MacBook Pro 3.1 (that is Late 2007 model AFAIR). I've bought it new a couple of years ago. Recently its on-battery power lifespan became very short (30 to 10 minutes). When my notebook turns itself off due to "low battery" and I press the small button on the battery itself, all LED lights are alight, indicating full charge. When I plug in the power adapter, my Mac displays that "battery is fully charged, finishing charging process" (I have a Russian OS X 10.5.7, so that is a rough translation), but the LEDs on battery itself display (seemingly accurate) status that there are one or two "LEDs still not charged". My battery have as few as 37 recharge cycles (yes, I've neglected calibration over the time I've used it). Battery info programs like iBatt2 report battery capacity of 65 337 mAh (with by-design capacity of 5600 mAh). I get it that something went wrong with battery electronics. I've tried resetting my Mac's PRAM and SMC, it did not changed anything. Now I'm trying to recalibrate the battery, but looks like it does not help as well. Will try to recalibrate it several times in a row. I'd buy a new battery if I knew if it is battery fault, not a notebook's. Any suggestions? Update: After recalibration, my battery status now displays battery capacity of 1500 mAh. But with every recalibration (or simply when I use notebook without power adapter plugged in) this number changes in the range from 200 mAh to 1700 mAh. LEDs on battery now are synchronous with what nodebook thinks on the charge level. Also I've noticed that cycle count changes rather slowly. It is now 39, it was 37 when I've started recalibration, and I went through the process at least ten times... So, the main question is: does it look like that replacing the battery would help me (or does it look like this is notebook's problem)? I guess I should try replacing the battery.

• Huawei E170 on Linux?

  Related to this question, I need to know if the specific combination of Ubuntu 9.10 + the Huawei E170 (HSDPA broadband modem USB stick) will work? Bonus points for a link to a webpage that decsribes exactly how it is done! Specifically, I'm in Austria and the telco is A1, but I hope that the setup would be the same regardless of location/provider. I have found these two pages that seem horribly complicated to a Linux noob. Is there a simpler way, or do I really need to dive into that? Your input is much appreciated! If I can get confirmation that it's supported, then I'd switch to Ubuntu Netbook Remix, because I'm already running Ubuntu on the main pc at home and I'd like to keep things simple.

• Performance of file operations on thousands of files on NTFS vs HFS, ext3, others

Feel free to close it if the question's too broad for superuser.] This is something I've been curious about for years, but I've never found any good discussions on the topic. Of course, my Google-fu might just be failing me... I often deal with projects involving thousands of relatively small files. This means that I'm frequently performing operations on all of those files or a large subset of them—copying the project folder elsewhere, deleting a bunch of temporary files, etc. Of all the machines I've worked on over the years, I've noticed that NTFS handles these tasks consistently slower than HFS on a Mac or ext3/ext4 on a Linux box. However, as far as I can tell, the raw throughput isn't actually slower on NTFS (at least not significantly), but the delay between each individual file is just a tiny bit longer. That little delay really adds up for thousands of files. (Side note: From what I've read, this is one of the reasons git is such a pain on Windows, since it relies so heavily on the file system for its object database.) Granted, my evidence is merely anecdotal—I don't currently have any real performance numbers, but it's something that I'd love to test further (perhaps with a Mac dual-booting into Windows). Still, my geekiness insists that someone out there already has. Can anyone explain this, or perhaps point me in the right direction to research it further myself?

• PC hangs and reboots from time to time

  Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. Could this difference maybe be a problem? Here is a list of my components. I hope that anybody find something I didn't think about yet. • How do I remove the Conduit toolbar that comes with µTorrent?

  I have recently installed µTorrent in my computer and unfortunately the Conduit adware came bundled with it. Basically, it installs a toolbar on all browsers and replaces the default search and initial homepage to that of Conduit. I have tried to run AdAware and MalwareBytes but both were unable to remove it. Search results on Google tell me to remove the Conduit software in the Control Panel → Remove Programs, but it's not listed there. Other suggestions involved going into the extensions configuration in Chrome, but it's not listed there as well. Anybody had the same problem?

  My problem is that I want to assign a keyboardshortcut for Dreamweaver CS4 and I have it like this: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS4\Dreamweaver.exe" Thats ok so far. But when I press the key it doesn't place itself infront of everything else like Outlook and Visual Studio does for example, instead it blinks in the taskbar, and I have to click there anyway to get back to Dreamweaver. Is there any switch or something I can assign for Dreamweaver to get back AND have it "popup?"

  Telligent Community combines blogs, wikis, forums, and file-sharing capabilities into a single product with single sign-on, using all Microsoft technologies. Is there an equivalent offering that runs on Unix/Linux? Or would I have to pick and choose individual product offerings and figure out another option for single sign-on across them? Are there plug-ins for something like WordPress or MovableType that might add the necessary functionality? A friend of mine is looking to add a "members-only" area to her company's website, and since they're hosted on Dreamhost (and can't afford StackExchange pricing yet), I'm trying to find other options for them.
