• Do all Mac OS X applications require Admin permissions to 'install'?

  I'm new to the whole Mac OS X operating system. I'm trying to learn and I've got myself a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I've created a test user that can not administrate so that I can test out permissions and I've found that I can not do anything in the Applications folder, which includes 'installing' applications (even those drag 'n' drop ones) and creating folders, without entering an Admin name and password. However, I was under the impression that this wasn't the case and you only needed Admin permissions to write to somewhere like Preferences, so can somebody please clarify why it is asking for Admin when I try to drag 'n' drop applications into the Applications folder.

  Hi I need to schedule a task to eject a USB modem immediately when the power fail. I had searched in EventLog and found the EventID for power Failure, put it in the Triggers,but in the Action I didn't know how to put what will eject the modem. Can anybody please help me on this, I need it urgently, because my system crash on the power failure because of the USB modem. I have a UPS but I have no suitable power cable for the modem ( couldn't find one in my country ). I run win7 Ultimate

• What device can create wireless network while connecting to an ethernet router

  Hi, I have access to an ethernet port of a wireless router. I simply connect my laptop to it via an ethernet cable. There are a total of four such ports on the wireless router. Now I want to connect a device (a wireless access point? wireless bridge? wireless switch?) via an ethernet cable to one of the other ethernet ports of the router. I want this device to act as a kind of wireless switch - it should "split" the ethernet connection coming from the router to two or more computers that connect to this device via a wireless. Basically, I have a wireless router with its wireless function switched off. I don't know the password for that router so can't activate the wireless function. Don't know the password of the ISP either. The only thing I can do is to connect via ethernet cable to the wireless router and this does not require a password. Now I want to use that connection and build a wireless upon it. What kind of device do I need? I am not really very well informed about network management and find the descriptions "wireless access point", "wireless bridge", "wireless switch" confusing. I know what an ethernet switch is - what I need is a device which would do the same but by allowing the clients to connect to it via a wireless. What kind of device would do that? Any recommendations about specific products?

• How do I remove the Conduit toolbar that comes with µTorrent?

  I have recently installed µTorrent in my computer and unfortunately the Conduit adware came bundled with it. Basically, it installs a toolbar on all browsers and replaces the default search and initial homepage to that of Conduit. I have tried to run AdAware and MalwareBytes but both were unable to remove it. Search results on Google tell me to remove the Conduit software in the Control Panel → Remove Programs, but it's not listed there. Other suggestions involved going into the extensions configuration in Chrome, but it's not listed there as well. Anybody had the same problem?

• Getting back to Dreamweaver CS4?

  My problem is that I want to assign a keyboardshortcut for Dreamweaver CS4 and I have it like this: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS4\Dreamweaver.exe" Thats ok so far. But when I press the key it doesn't place itself infront of everything else like Outlook and Visual Studio does for example, instead it blinks in the taskbar, and I have to click there anyway to get back to Dreamweaver. Is there any switch or something I can assign for Dreamweaver to get back AND have it "popup?"

• gparted installed on OpenSuse shows all file system types as greyed out except for hfs

  I have had this problem before and fixed it, but I don't recall how I did it and I did not record it (sadness :( ) I have all the requisite commands installed on OpenSuse to support gparted's efforts in creating any of the supported file systems. I recall that the problem was that gparted could not find the commands, in any event all the file systems are greyed out in the context menu except for the legacy hfs partition which only supports < 2gb. Even extfs2-extfs4 are greyed out. How do I fix this?

  Telligent Community combines blogs, wikis, forums, and file-sharing capabilities into a single product with single sign-on, using all Microsoft technologies. Is there an equivalent offering that runs on Unix/Linux? Or would I have to pick and choose individual product offerings and figure out another option for single sign-on across them? Are there plug-ins for something like WordPress or MovableType that might add the necessary functionality? A friend of mine is looking to add a "members-only" area to her company's website, and since they're hosted on Dreamhost (and can't afford StackExchange pricing yet), I'm trying to find other options for them.

• PC hangs and reboots from time to time

  Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. Could this difference maybe be a problem? Here is a list of my components. I hope that anybody find something I didn't think about yet.   Alight, my website has some issues that I'm not sure what's causing them. Visit this page http://online-file-sharing.net/tos.html and click one of the bottom footer links... it redirects you to your localhost in the address bar. I have no idea why it does this. I'm hosting this website on my own server, which is this computer, and using Xampp. If this information helps. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm also using DYNDNS as my nameservers.

• Full screen flash lags on Windows 7

  I have been experiencing an issue since I've up upgraded to Windows 7 where all flash videos have horrible frame rates when run in full screen mode. I have tried multiple browsers and i have the latest version of flash and video drivers. I have tried re-installing flash and disabling hardware acceleration. The problem occurs on youtube and hulu. This is a clean install on a Core 2 duo with 4GB RAM and an Nvidia 8400M GS.

• Networked Parallel Port in Linux / KVM / QEMU

  What I want to use is the "-parallel" tcp or udp option from KVM / QEMU, but I don't seem to find any server for this client. I don't serve a printer but a hardware dongle. I checked ser2net, which does provide "/dev/lp0" sharing, but it doesn't seem to work for KVM / QEMU. I suspect KVM / QEMU requires "/dev/parport0". I did rmmod lp, modprobe ppdev, linked ser2net to parport0, but it didn't work out. Perhaps ser2net is not suited for this. I tried socat as well, and I tried netcat. No success. Does anyone know any KVM / QEMU compatible parallel port server? Or did any of netcat, socat or ser2net work for you?

• Migrating Windows XP BOOT.INI Settings to Windows 7 Boot-loader

  Two months ago my motherboard died, so I bought a used computer that came with Windows 7. I have since installed my old hard-drive, which had Windows XP on it, in this system. What I am trying to do now is to figure out a way to migrate the settings from XP's BOOT.INI into 7's boot-loader. Below is the BOOT.INI I used in XP (I have reduced the strings and updated the disks to point to the new location of the old HD. Oh and I am not clear on the drive letters. In XP, I could boot the recovery console or MS-DOS from a file in C:\ that contains the boot-sector. I am not sure what drive letter it would be called now—I had to manually change all the drive letters of the old partitions in Windows 7 because it auto-assigned them all wrong/differently). From the tech spec only, these versions seem outdated in many aspects - mainly drivers and installed software versions. • Windows 8 unable to connect to WPA2 AES Wireless Network

  I'm running Windows 8 and am unable to connect to my home wireless network. I've tried restarting the router, patching the drivers to the next version, patching the drivers to the last version, running windows update and patching the chipset drivers to the latest version. So far nothing has worked. My computer can get on the internet via USB tethering on my phone or an open WiFi connection, but it is unable to connect to my home WPA2 AES secured wireless network. It sees the network, attempts to connect, gets a limited connection and then drops the connection. All the other wireless devices in my household have no problems. I have the new Dell XPS 12, running Windows 8 using an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 wireless adapter. I've refreshed windows twice now to try different driver configurations. I've tried uninstalling all the Dell software, I've tried uninstalling all the Intel software and reinstalling just the drivers. I've tried turning switching the ability for the Wireless driver to turn the computer off or on. I've tried setting up the connection manually from desktop mode. I've tried switching it on and off using the wireless button on the keyboard and in the software. So far nothing has allowed me to connect to the secured network. It just keeps getting a limited connection, dropping the connection and retrying. It's driving me crazy, any ideas, anything I missed? Thanks.

• Java file manager won't load in Firefox

  I am using Webmin and I can't get the file manager to load in Firefox. It is a simple, Java based file manager. When I try to load it I get the following error: This module requires java to function, but your browser does not support java Internet Explorer works fine and I have yet to try on Chrome. Java is installed and I have the same problem on Windows and Linux. Java seems to work fine with everything else, with the exception of webcams. Any advice on the issue would be appreciated. Edit: I just checked and it doesn't work in Chrome either.

• How should I fix problems with file permissions while restoring from Time Machine?

What's the safest way to deal with this? • Deluge through a socks proxy server

  To use deluge I use a socks proxy server. Everything was working perfectly till now. I use the following code to create the socks server: ssh -D 1080 user@remote-server In the proxy settings of Deluge I put the host as 127.0.0.1 and port as 1080 and use socks v4 (for some reason it didn't work with socks v5). This setup was working perfectly till now. Now suddenly I cannot download any torrents. The error I get is connection timed out. I checked the remote server and it seems it is not even being used. What can the error be ?

• Is there a good XP like windows explorer for windows Vista?

  I'm still refusing to go to Windows Vista and now Windows 7 mainly due to the windows explorer, I find it cumbersome and hard to use exclusively with a keyboard. I use XP file explorer in the most basic view, the address bar at the top and files always in list view underneath. The reason I do this is because I'm almost blind and do everything from the keyboard and don't touch the mouse whilst navigating through files, this is because I can type "L[ENTER]D[Enter]B[Enter]" and know that I'm in "c:\documents and settings\Brett Ryan", and I can hit [Tab] once to go to the address bar to type in a folder. Can anyone suggest a replacement for windows explorer that brings back this basic navigational behavior?
