• C# LINQ: Join and Group

  I have two tables TableA aId aValue TableB bId aId bValue I want to join these two tables via aId, and from there, group them by bValue var result = from a in db.TableA join b in db.TableB on a.aId equals b.aId group b by b.bValue into x select new {x}; My code doesn't recognize the join after the group. In other words, the grouping works, but the join doesn't (or at least I can't figure out how to access all of the data after the join). Any help would be appreciated. I'm a n00b.

• Will this safely delete my record?

  I hate these three tables that. Two tables have a many to many relationship and as such it generates a third table. I'm using Linq-to-SQL and in the .dbml file I've dragged all the folder there to the graphic surface. Here is the method I'm using to delete an Area safely. Remember that documents are associated to an Area, so I can't just delete it and leave documents hanging. • How to improve INSERT INTO ... SELECT locking behavior

  In our production database, we ran the following pseudo-code SQL batch query running every hour: INSERT INTO TemporaryTable (SELECT FROM HighlyContentiousTableInInnoDb WHERE allKindsOfComplexConditions are true) Now this query itself does not need to be fast, but I noticed it was locking up HighlyContentiousTableInInnoDb, even though it was just reading from it. Which was making some other very simple queries take ~25 seconds (that's how long that other query takes). Then I discovered that InnoDB tables in such a case are actually locked by a SELECT! http://www.mysqlperformanceblog.com/2006/07/12/insert-into-select-performance-with-innodb-tables/ But I don't really like the solution in the article of selecting into an OUTFILE, it seems like a hack (temporary files on filesystem seem sucky). Any other ideas? Is there a way to make a full copy of an InnoDB table without locking it in this way during the copy. Then I could just copy the HighlyContentiousTable to another table and do the query there.

  I do have single database and near about 11 tables. while my web page is opening informations from these 11 tables will be accessed same time. according to my current settings what I did now is for each table database is opening and closing. say I had given username and password to open databse for each table and close after retrieving information from that table. Is this the right way to do it?? I feel because of this the database is opeing and closing 11 times!!!! Am I right?? is this the right way to do that?? THanks Mathew

• Microsoft Sync Framework - Local DB and Remote DB have to have the same schema?

  When using MSF, is it implied in the technology that the sync tables are supposed to be 1-1? The reason I'm wondering is that if I'm synching from a SQL2005 database to a SQLCE, I might want the CE one to be a little more flattened out so I can get data out with a simpler SELECT statement (as CE does not support sprocs). For example, I might have a tblCustomer, tblOrder, and tblCustomerOrder in the central database, but in the local databases one table with all the data might be preferred. Of course I'd still want the updates to reflect back and forth between the two databases. Does MSF make this possible, or does the local DB have to have the same tables as the central?

• What ports does Advantage Database Server need?

  I have an application which uses ADS and I am attempting to deploy it in a Windows network environment with a rather restrictive firewall. I am having a problem configuring firewall ports appropriately. ADS lives on \server, and it's listening on port 1234. When \client tries to connect to \server\tables, I get Error 6420 (Discovery process failed). When \client tries to connect to \server:1234\tables, I get error 6097, bad IP address specified in the connection path. \server is pingable from \client, and I can telnet to \server:1234. If I try to connect from a client machine inside the firewall, either connection path works fine. It seems there must be something else I need to open in the firewall. Any ideas? Thanks, Aaron.

What does the free space of 31GB mean? If the maximum RAM can be allocated to innodb_buffer_pool_size is 1GB, is it possible to specify which tables to loaded into memory while keep others always read from disk? Thanks in advance.

  I’m trying to design a database to use with ASP.net MVC application. Here is the scenario: There are three entities and users can post their comments for each of these different entities. I just wonder how just put one table for Comments and link all other entities to it. Obviously, Comments table needs 3 references (foreign key) to those tables but as you know these foreign keys can’t be null and just one of them can be filled for each row. Is there any better way than implementing three different tables for each entity’s comments? Cheers Ethan

  this is probably a simple question, but i have been unable to find a solution online, any help would be much appreciated. I'm trying to create an SQL query in PHP and would like to somehow apply a wild card to the TABLE filter... something perhaps like.... select * from %table%. However, I have only so far been able to see filters for column values not table names. as an example i would have tables such as: jan_table_1 feb_table_1 jan_table_2 feb_table_2 and would want to say, select only tables with a "jan" prefix... or "1" suffix. Is there a quick and easy solution to this that I have not seen? Thanks in advance!

  I need to build some sort of a custom CMS for a client of ours. These are some of the functional requirements: Must be able to manage the list of Pages in the site Each Page can contain a number of ColumnGroups A ColumnGroup is nothing more than a list of Columns in a certain ColumnGroupLayout. For example: "one column taking up the entire width of the page", "two columns each taking up half of the width", ... Each Column can contain a number ContentBlocks Examples of a ContentBlock are: TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ... ContentBlocks can be given a certain sorting within a Column A ContentBlock can be put in different Columns so that content can be reused without having to be duplicated. My first quick draft of how this could look like in C# code (we're using ASP.NET 4.0 to develop the CMS) can be found at the bottom of my question. One of the technical requirements is that it must be as easy as possible to add new types of ContentBlocks to the CMS. So I would like model everything as flexible as possible. Unfortunately, I'm already stuck at trying to figure out how the database should look like. One of the problems I'm having has to do with sorting different types of ContentBlocks in a Column. I guess each type of ContentBlock (like TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ...) should have it's own table in the database because each has it's own different fields. A TextBlock might only have a field called Text whereas a NewsBlock might have fields for the Text, the Summary, the PublicationDate, ... Since one Column can have ContentBlocks located in different tables, I guess I'll have to create a many-to-many association for each type of ContentBlock. For example: ColumnTextBlocks, ColumnNewsBlocks and ColumnPictureBlocks. The problem I have with this setup is the sorting of the different ContentBlocks in a column. This could be something like this: TextBlock NewsBlock TextBlock TextBlock PictureBlock Where do I store the sorting number? If I store them in the associaton tables, I'll have to update a lot of tables when changing the sorting order of ContentBlocks in a Column. Is this a good approach to the problem? Basically, my question is: What is the best way to model this keeping in mind that it should be easy to add new types of ContentBlocks? My next question is: What ORM can deal with that kind of modeling? To be honest, we are ORM-virgins at work. I have been reading a bit about Linq-to-SQL and NHibernate, but we have no experience with them. Because of the IList in the Column class (see code below) I think we can rule out Linq-to-SQL, right? Can NHibernate handle the mapping of data from many different tables to one IList? Also keep in mind that this is just a very small portion of the domain. Other parts are Users belonging to a certain UserGroup having certain Permissions on Pages, ColumnGroups, Columns and ContentBlocks. • Do MyISAM holes get filled in automatically?

  When you run a delete on a MyISAM table, it leaves a hole in the table until the table is optimized. This affects concurrent inserts. On the default setting, concurrent_inserts only work for tables without holes. However, in the documentation for MyISAM, under the concurrent_insert section it says: Enables concurrent inserts for all MyISAM tables, even those that have holes. For a table with a hole, new rows are inserted at the end of the table if it is in use by another thread. Otherwise, MySQL acquires a normal write lock and inserts the row into the hole. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-system-variables.html#sysvar_concurrent_insert Does that mean MyISAM automatically fills in holes whenever a new row is insert into the table? Previously I thought the holes would not be fixed until you OPTIMIZE a table.

• Trac & Sqlite PK problem

  I create my trac enviromnets using a sqlite database, it works very well. Now i want to get some information directly from the database and i'm using C# to do it using System.Data.SQLite. The problem i have is an error in the designer cause the tables don't have primary keys. After get this error i went and noticed that all tables that have more than one primary key defined in the schema were not 'converted' to sqlite, that information is lost. I believe the problem is in sqlite_backend.py but python isn't my speciality and i'm in a hurry so if you can guide me to a quick fix. thank you.

• SaaS Architecture Question from Newbie

  I have developed a number of departmental client-server applications, and am now ready to begin working on moving one of these applications to a SaaS model. I have done some basic web development, but I'm a newbie when it comes to SaaS architectures. One of the first questions that comes to mind as I try to design the architecture is the question of single vs. multi tenancy. The pros and cons of each vary significantly depending on the type of application and scale required, so I'd like to describe my application and scale needs below, and hope others can comment on how I should get started with the architecture. The client-server application currently consists of a Firebird database and a Windows application. The database contains about 20 tables containing a few thousand records in 4 primary tables, and a few hundred records in various lookup and related tables. Although the number of records is small, the size can get large, as the database can contain large BLOBS. Each customer sets up their own database and has a handful of users within the organization connected to it. When I update the db schema, a new windows application is released, and it checks the db schema and then applies the updates as needed. For the SaaS application, I am designing for 100's (not 1000's or millions) of new customers per year. My first thought was to go with a multi tenancy model to make updates easy (shut down apply the updates to one database, and then start up). On the other hand, a single tenancy model would provide a means to roll updates out to a group of customers at a time, and spread the risk of data corruption - i.e. if something goes wrong with a database, it will impact one customer instead of all customers. With this idea, I was thinking of having a single web front-end which would connect to a single customer database upon login. Thus, when a new customer creates an account, a new database would be created (each customer would have their own db with multiple users as needed for the customer). In this model, a db update would require either a process to go through each db to apply schema changes, or a trigger upon logging in to initiate a schema update similar to the client-server model currently in use. Can anyone point me to information for similar applications which have been ported from client-server to SaaS? Or provide any pointers to consider? Basically I'm looking for architecture examples of taking a departmental application and making it available as a self service website for multiple customers. • Problem with autocommit in ANT SQL task

  I have an SQL script and want to apply it witn ANT task. This script clears out schema, creates new tables and views. The ANT defined task as follows: <sql driver="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" url="jdbc:mysql://host:3306/smth" userid="smth" password="smth" expandProperties="false" autocommit="true" src="all.sql" > </sql> When this task launches, it shows in log that tables are cleared and created. But when it tries to create first view, it fails with: Failed to execute: CREATE VIEW component... AS SELECT component_raw.id AS MySQLSyntaxErrorException: Table 'component_raw' doesn't exist I have no idea why it fails here. Running this all.sql from MySQL query browser gives no errors. When I launched ANT with -v option, I didn't see any "COMMIT" messages.. Please, help to resolve the problem.

  I have 3 tables(Roles,Actions and RoleActionLinks). Roles table has few columns(RoleID,RoleName,Desc). Actions table has few colums(ActionID,ActionName,Desc). In RoleActionLink is created for store the association between Roles and Actions and this table has the columns such as RoleID,ActionID When I created the data model(edmx). it shows only Role and Action as entity. i did not find RoleActionLink table. but even there is no direct relation between Roles and Actions table, both tables are automatically related using RoleActionLink table. When i create the new Action, a action record should be populated in Action table(this is works fine). At the same time, i need to populate record in RoleActionLinks table. But i dont have the entity to populate. Please tell me how to accomplish my needs.

• Java works under Firefox but not under Internet Explorer

  Java works under Firefox but not under IE. Java applet activated in security settings, activated in add-ons, activated in advanced tab; that's the advice they usually give in forums... I've also deleted my temporary internet files, reinstalled IE8 and it is also set as the default java for IE through the control panel. IE version: 8.0.6001.18702 Java version: 1.7.0_03. Windows XP SP3. Any advice? Thanks :)

• Script or Batch File to Automate Logon from Welcome Screen

  Is there a script or batch file to automate the log-on process from the XP Welcome screen? As all details are the same Username, Password, and Domain in a room of 30 machines. The reason I don't use Windows AutoAdminLogon is I only want to logon temporary at different times as a user to run such things as online test for a class of high school students without the students logging on individually first, also it would be useful for admin tasks if I can change/specify the user details.

• ActiveRecord fundamentally incompatible with composite keys?

  I have been attempting to use subsonic for a project on which I'm working. All was going quite well until I encountered a link table with a composite primary key. That is a key made up of the primary keys of the two tables it joins. Subsonic failed to recognize both keys which was problematic. I was going to adjust subsonic to support compound keys but I stopped and though "Maybe there is a reason for this". Normally active record relies on a single primary key field for every record, even in link tables. But is this necessary? Should I just give up on active record for this project or continue with my modifications?

  To make story short, i'm building self-learning banner management system. Users will be able to insert these banners to their site when banners will be shown based on sales/impressions ratio. I have 4 tables Banners bannerID int bannerImage varchar.... SmartBanners smartBannerID int smartBannerArrayID int bannerID int impressionsCount int visibility tinyint (percents) SmartBannerArrays smartBannerArrayID int userID int Statistics bannerID int saleAmountPerDay decimal... Each night i need to generate new "visibility" for each SmartBanner based on whole SmartBannerArray that same user has. So i need to get sum of impressions and sales for each bannerID in SmartBannerArray. All comes to my mind is to use double cursor, one will loop thought SmartBannerArrays get needed values for sum of impressions and sales and then inner loop which will access each SmartBanner and change it's "visibility" percentage based on (sales/impressions)/(sumOfSales/sumOfImpressions)*100 Hope you get the picture... Is there any other way to design better tables or not to use double cursor to avoid server overload ?

• SQL Server 2005 RIGHT OUTER JOIN not working

  I'm looking up access logs for specific courses. I need to show all the courses even if they don't exist in the logs table. Hence the outer join.... but after trying (presumably) all of the variations of LEFT OUTER, RIGHT OUTER, INNER and placement of the tables within the SQL code, I couldn't get my result. Is it the way I'm joining the tables? Again, in short, I want all course_id's regardless of their existence in lsn_logs.

  DOMPDF does not support floats. However I am listing many tables, and they are mainly key & value pairs. I would like 2 of these tables to appear side by side. i.e. if I could use floats HTML <table id="stuff"> ... </table> <table id="other-stuff"> ... </table> CSS table#stuff { float: left; } table#other-stuff { float: right; } What sort of workaround can I do to support this? Or is it impossible?

• Setting up a SQL Membership Provider and attaching the MDF file in Visual Studio 2008

  I'm trying to set up a SQL Membership Provider for an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 and I'm having problems setting up the tables and stored procedures in the database. I've tried attaching both the applications current database and a blank database to my local SQLEXPRESS instance (using SSEUtil) and then running the aspnet_regsql wizard against them. When I detach the mdf file and try to load it in Visual Studio 2008, the data connection in the server explorer shows that the database has no tables or stored procedures. Am I missing a step or something here? I've been having a heap of trouble with compatibility between Visual Studio and SQLEXPRESS.
