• Laptop runs HOT after 12.10 upgrade!

  I was running 12.04 for 6 months, my laptop ran almost silently and cool enough to hold on my lap. I updated to 12.10 and now my computer gets too hot to hold on my lap and the fan is constantly running on full blast. This is the output of sensors: acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +84.0°C (crit = +99.0°C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +84.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +74.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +72.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 2: +75.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 3: +84.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) radeon-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: +76.0°C I have an HP Pavilion dv6, i7, amd radeon graphics. Please let me know if you need additional information. What could be different between the two Ubuntu additions that caused such a drastic change? Edit 1: Per @Paul's suggestion, I ran htop to try to narrow down the problem. Here is the result! This is about 10 minutes after boot-up, htop, yakuake, and a chrome page with 1 tab opened to this question are all that I have manually opened. The most taxing program to the CPU is htop itself. I think that the problem must lie elsewhere; my temps are already up to ~65C for the CPU and ~69C for the GPU, with nearly 0% CPU usage.

  You've heard this a million times but the "tap to click" is a pain in the behind and I want to disable it. There is no touchpad in gpointing-device-settings and neither in mouse and touchpad in system settings. I've tried some commands in terminal but it's all crap. Dconf-editor doesn't react.   I can't make work the multitouch of the ALPS touchpad in my Dell Inspiron I15RN-3647BK with Ubuntu 11.10 x64, kernel 3.0.0-17-generic... • How can I configure the touchpad and keyboard settings on a Dell Inspiron 5110?

  I am using ubuntu 11.10. I want the following 3 things: I have dell inspiron 5110 laptop. There is button at the top right corner of laptop which can be used for turning the screen off. It works in windows but it does not work in ubuntu 11.10. Even in the manual of the laptop, it the button is supported only in windows. Is there a way to activate it in ubuntu 11.10? Some of the keys like: "break" etc. are missing. Can I use other keys (or combinations of other keys) to function as those missing keys? In the program, "mouse and touchpad", there is no tab for touchpad. I want to enable vertical and horizontal scrolling. How do I do that? • Firefox does not print flash content

  I am using Firefox 3.6.15 on a Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit Operating System, Intel Core i7 CPU, 3.33GHz, 10BG RAM, by Hewlett-Packard. Firefox does not print flash content, aka swf objects, nor does it show them in the print preview pane...I want to print out the entire web page with the flash content. I seem to only be able to see flash and html content together in print preview and to print in IE8. I have tried to google this issue, but could not find a solution. I was trying to print preview/print out the following site: http://www.discovertheponds.com/. Flash content will display in print preview and print in IE8, but neither print preview or print in Firefox. I have also updated the Java on my computer to the most recent update, and ran the firefox plug-in checker at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ . I do run Firebug and Web Developer, but have currently disabled them. Is this problem on my end, meaning some issue with my computer...or is this because of how the website was programmed in HTML/Flash...or is this a bug with Firefox? I am a website designer and am also concerned that others will not be able print sites I develop or have already developed that have flash content from Firefox. I used to think Firefox was better than IE at everything. What happened here? Was it some change in Firefox's version that caused this problem?

• Writing files in a sub folder of the web folder (apache security)

  I need to save session data for a dynamic web page script by writing to file. I have two questions: Are there any security preferences as to whether to save the data UNDER the web folder, or OUTSIDE the web folder? I attempted to write to the folder an (unsuprisingly), I had a 'file permission refused' type error. Should I set the folder ownership to the apache user (600, 640 or 644?) [[Edit]] core <- 'OUTSIDE' web folder (php script live here) data <- 'OUTSIDE' web folder (session data and other misc data resides here) web <- web root folder js <- any folder below is 'INSIDE' the web folder css html For example, in a php script (i.e. a dynamic PHP page), I can attempt to write to a file using something like fput('../data',data) yet (as I understand it) ../data should not be accessible - for security reasons. Could someone please provide a simple example that shows how to provide access to ../data/ in the example given above?. What are the actual SPECIFIC steps required? BTW, I am running on a LAMP stack.

• Can AJAX in a CMS slow down your server

  I am currently developing some plugins for WordPress, and I was wondering which route to take. Let's take an example, you want to display the last 3 tweets on your page. Option 1 You do things the normal way inside WordPress. Someone enters the website, while generating the page, you fetch the tweets in php via the twitter api, and just display them where you want. Now the small problem with this is, that you have to wait for the response from twitter. This takes a few ms. NO real problem, but this is question is just out of curiosity. Option 2 Here you don't do anything in WordPress on the initial load, but you do have the API inside. Now you just generate the page, and as soon as the page is done on the client side, you do a small AJAX call back to the server via a WordPress plugin, to fetch your latest tweets. Also called asynchronously. Now the problem with this IMO is that you have much more stress on your server. For starters you have two HTTP requests instead of one. Secondly the WordPress core has to load two times instead of one. Other options Now I know there are a lot of other options: 1) Getting the tweets directly via javascript, no stress on the server at all. 2) Cache the tweets so they are fetched from the DB instead of using the API every time. 3) Getting the tweets from an ajax call that is not a WordPress plugin. 4) Many more. My Question Now my question is if you only compare 1 and 2, which would be a better choice.

• Authentication system brainstorm

  Hi. We got multiple small websites (microsites) and one main high traffic one with big users base. Right now the requirement is to build authentication system which should allow users to loign with the same identity across the network. All website are running on different domains, powered by Drupal 6 CMS and have separate databases (so sharing tables with prefix is not an option + it creates a huge mess in the db). Here is the set of core requirements I came up with: Users should be able to login with the same credentials to all sites within the network User’s data sharing between Main site (storage) and all micro sites within the network Data synchronization across the network when user changes the data (update email or password for example) The login/registration process should be seamless and consistent Register on any of the sites across the network and use that identity to login later on. In the future there might be a need to add openid authentication options. Basically we are looking at something similar stackexchange does, but not sure if they have central users base on not. I was thinking about custom solution which will include 2 parts (modules), one will be stored on the Main site for users data storing and responding to requests from clients. Second part (module) will be placed on each microsite, which is going to send requests to the Master. Some kind of client - server setup. One of the complications I see right away is #3. Data Synhcronization across the network. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel and maybe some work is already done in this direction. Looking forward to your ideas on how to approach this project. • best way to host multiple wordpress site on single vps [migrated]

  Not sure if this is webmaster or a WordPress question, it's a bit half and half, sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. Without using Multi-Site or installing new WordPress CMS' in second-level domains, what's the best way to get multiple WordPress installs running on my VPS (running Linux powered CentOS 6 with WHM and cPanel)? It's currently working but only by setting the permalinks option to the default setting, so the URLs aren't human-friendly. I have come across something called WPSiteStack, though I'd really rather not go down this route. Long story short, I need the following: Seperate installs so one core / theme / plugin update doesn't affect all sites and increases security of all sites; 'Pretty' permalinks; Each WordPress install must be in the root of it's own domain to ensure that I can accurately measure my clients' quotas; It may also be worth noting that some functions within each install use the $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] and $_SERVER['HOST'] variables. I have already edited the httpd-vhosts.conf, httpd.conf and .htaccess files but this hasn't made any changes. So any ideas what I'm missing or doing wrong? Any help is much appreciated.

• Apache DVB http video Streaming bandwidth or priority problem

  I'm streaming few precompressed DVB videos from cloud. The streams are generated from VLC on "impossible" ports (such as 64085, 64086 etc) reverse proxed by Apache on port 80 and 8080. All the generated streams are listed in "http://95.110.164.61/indexv.html". From an ADSL connection with enough downlink bandwidth, recalling the stream generated by VLC (such as "http://95.110.164.61:64087/mpg2_6.4") it flows fluently. Recalling the same stream proxed by Apache ("http://95.110.164.61/mpg2_6.4") the stream stops and goes. The only situation in which the Apache proxed streams flow regularly is from a site connected through 64 Mbps warranted bandwith with RTT to the server less than 10 mseconds. Please note that streams below 2 Mbps are fluently proxed. The system is a single core xeon with windows 2008 R2 on 4 GB of RAM with 1 Gbps of network bandwidth. The drain of computational and bandwidth resources is negligeable, the RAM usage always lower than 50%. On the system I run many VLC streamers. Any of them drains a variable amount of RAM (from about 25 to 70 MB). On the contrary the couple of httpd.exe processes drain no more than 7 MB. Using Wireshark (on the server) I see that VLC directy send to the client much more packets than Apache, and the stream is framgmented on many frames. I'm not a programmer, a newby of Apache. Can anyone please address me to a specific portion of the Apache's huge documentation? Thank you. igino

• Google Analytics: How long does it take users to trigger an event

  I implemented Google Analytics event tracking on my currency conversion website. The typical user flow is: User lands on a page about two currencies. User enters an amount to be converted. The site shows the user the value in the other currency. The JavaScript sends Google Analytics an "converted" event when the currency conversion is done. Because most of the sessions on my site are single page, the event tracking is very important to me to be able to know if users find my page useful. I'm looking for a way to be able to figure out how long it typically takes users to enter a value in the form. I expect that this data would form a bell curve with around a specific amount of time after page load. If I can't get a graph, I could make do with a median value. I would like to be able to use this as a core metric around usability testing. Is there a way to get this information out of Google Analytics?

• Site experiencing low traffic volume between 8AM and 4PM BST

  There may be no definitive answer to this question but I thought peer review of the problem might stimulate some ideas on the topic. We have a boutique sales site that is experiencing low volumes of traffic (both UK and international) between 8AM and 4PM BST. This seems sort of strange since our target audience for the site is UK based, and this would seem to be when people are awake and online. We are in contact with another boutique site in the same sector who don't experience this issue, so it seems kinda strange. Later on in the day we are getting traffic from the UK, as well as a fair amount of international traffic, so I'm at a loss to figure this one out. The site is fairly well optimised including:- sitemap.xml Proper caching policies across the board google merchant dublin core microdata html5 pretty urls meta and content are reviewed as an ongoing concern we have decent sitelinks for direct queries thru google on the site name a decent amount of inbound links FB, Twitter, Google +1 Google maps listing [verified] site has been selling for ~4 months and is getting ~250 users per day. So I'm not entirely sure how to explain the mid day dip in our figures.... Any ideas at all would be useful. Cheers all!

• The very beggining research for web developing

  It is a general question to ask what would be the easiest way to start a website, however every one need a little boost up at the begging. There are content management systems, or admin panels, or some people have developed their own systems and many more diffirent things people use at the very beggining. Among others my way was looking for a very lightweight cms and develop a system on to it, unfortunately I couldn't find a good system to develop on, for example I decided to develop on snewscms (the lightest weight cms) but it is really hard to manage since it is not developed with object oriented programming standarts and I thought it would be a mistake to continue developing on to such a system. On the other hand starting to code from the core would be weak about security, and using a massive cms like joomla or drupal will not be good since there will be many things that are unused and moreover I will not feel well when I don't know what I am controlling since it is not easy to know every part of them. What I am asking is what would you do if you had lost all the files you are currently using today, where would you start from? What tool would you use? Or is there a lightweight and well coded tool to get start with?

• File Not Found error launching Guest OS in a non-administrator user account

  Hi, I am running Fusion 2.0.6 (196839) on an iMac running 10.6.2 with 3 user accounts (1 Administrator). I have Fusion set up to share the Guest OS, and it's been working splendidly for nearly a year. Within the Guest OS (Windows XP PRO), there are also 3 user accounts (1 Administrator). Last night I went to back up my VM to an external drive, and to minimize the file size and transfer time, I deleted all Snapshots but the most-recent one. I then backed up the VM externally (28.23 GB). Today, one of my users tried to launch the Guest OS from within her user account, and received the following error message: "File Not Found: Windows XP Pro-000006.vmdk "This file is required to power on this virtual machine. If this file was moved, please provide its new location." My two choices are Cancel and Browse. When I browse, I can locate the Windows XP Pro-000006.vmdk file, which appears to be contained within the VM file (Windows XP Pro.vmwarevm). However, it still won't launch from a non-Admin user account. If I view the package contents of the VM file from the user account, the above file is present and appears to be created upon each launch of the Guest OS. If I go back to my Administrator account on the Mac and then launch Fusion, the Guest OS works perfectly for all 3 user accounts within XP Pro. I have tried to delete the Guest OS from Fusion's Library within the problem user account, then re-connect it to that Library, but the result is the same. The Guest OS data integrity is 100% -- but is accessible only from the OS X Administrator account. This problem only surfaced after deleting several older Snapshots. Again, the data is there, the Guest OS powers up normally in the Mac's Administrator account, but persistently returns the above error when attempting to power on from a non-Admin account on the Mac. I'm not sure how this is affecting the error, but when I look at Hard Disk Settings, the "unable-to-locate" file is the filename of the virtual HD. I don't want to make any changes to my (working) VM without any advice from the knowledgeable people on this forum. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  I ran into the following error recently in Visual Studio 2010 while trying to port Phil Haack’s excellent T4CSS template which was originally built for Visual Studio 2008.   The Problem Error Compiling transformation: Metadata file 'dotless.Core' could not be found In “T4 speak”, this simply means that you have an Assembly directive in your T4 template but the T4 engine was not able to locate or load the referenced assembly. On a side note: The T4CSS template is a sweet little wrapper to allow you to use DotLessCss to generate static .css files from .less files rather than using their default HttpHandler or command-line tool.    If you haven't tried DotLessCSS yet, go check it out now!  In short, it is a tool that allows you to templatize and program your CSS files so that you can use variables, expressions, and mixins within your CSS which enables rapid changes and a lot of developer-flexibility as you evolve your CSS and UI. Back to our regularly scheduled program… Anyhow, this post isn't about DotLessCss, its about the T4 Templates and the errors I ran into when converting them from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. In VS2010, there were quite a few changes to the T4 Template Engine; most were excellent changes, but this one bit me with T4CSS: “Project assemblies are no longer used to resolve template assembly directives.” In VS2008, if you wanted to reference a custom assembly in your T4 Template (.tt file) you would simply right click on your project, choose Add Reference and select that assembly.  Afterwards you were allowed to use the following syntax in your T4 template to tell it to look at the local references: <#@ assembly name="dotless.Core.dll" #> This told the engine to look in the “usual place” for the assembly, which is your project references. However, this is exactly what they changed in VS2010.  They now basically sandbox the T4 Engine to keep your T4 assemblies separate from your project assemblies.  This can come in handy if you want to support different versions of an assembly referenced both by your T4 templates and your project. Who broke the build?  Oh, Microsoft Did! In our case, this change causes a problem since the templates are no longer compatible when upgrading to VS 2010 – thus its a breaking change.  So, how do we make this work in VS 2010? Luckily, Microsoft now offers several options for referencing assemblies from T4 Templates: GAC your assemblies and use Namespace Reference or Fully Qualified Type Name Use a hard-coded Fully Qualified UNC path Copy assembly to Visual Studio "Public Assemblies Folder" and use Namespace Reference or Fully Qualified Type Name.  Use or Define a Windows Environment Variable to build a Fully Qualified UNC path. Use a Visual Studio Macro to build a Fully Qualified UNC path. Option #1 & 2 were already supported in Visual Studio 2008, so if you want to keep your templates compatible with both Visual Studio versions, then you would have to adopt one of these approaches. Yakkety Yak, use the GAC! Option #1 requires an additional pre-build step to GAC the referenced assembly, which could be a pain.  But, if you go that route, then after you GAC, all you need is a simple type name or namespace reference such as: <#@ assembly name="dotless.Core" #> Hard Coding aint that hard! The other option of using hard-coded paths in Option #2 is pretty impractical in most situations since each developer would have to use the same local project folder paths, or modify this setting each time for their local machines as well as for production deployment.  However, if you want to go that route, simply use the following assembly directive style: <#@ assembly name="C:\Code\Lib\dotless.Core.dll" #> Lets go Public! Option #3, the Visual Studio Public Assemblies Folder, is the recommended place to put commonly used tools and libraries that are only needed for Visual Studio.  Think of it like a VS-only GAC.  This is likely the best place for something like dotLessCSS and is my preferred solution.  However, you will need to either use an installer or a pre-build action to copy the assembly to the right folder location.   Normally this is located at:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies Once you have copied your assembly there, you use the type name or namespace syntax again: <#@ assembly name="dotless.Core" #> Save the Environment! Option #4, using a Windows Environment Variable, is interesting for enterprise use where you may have standard locations for files, but less useful for demo-code, frameworks, and products where you don't have control over the local system.  The syntax for including a environment variable in your assembly directive looks like the following, just as you would expect: <#@ assembly name="%mypath%\dotless.Core.dll" #> “mypath” is a Windows environment variable you setup that points to some fully qualified UNC path on your system.  In the right situation this can be a great solution such as one where you use a msi installer for deployment, or where you have a pre-existing environment variable you can re-use. OMG Macros! Finally, Option #5 is a very nice option if you want to keep your T4 template’s assembly reference local and relative to the project or solution without muddying-up your dev environment or GAC with extra deployments.  An example looks like this: <#@ assembly name="$(SolutionDir)lib\dotless.Core.dll" #> In this example, I’m using the “SolutionDir” VS macro so I can reference an assembly in a “/lib” folder at the root of the solution.   This is just one of the many macros you can use.  If you are familiar with creating Pre/Post-build Event scripts, you can use its dialog to look at all of the different VS macros available. This option gives the best solution for local assemblies without the hassle of extra installers or other setup before the build.   However, its still not compatible with Visual Studio 2008, so if you have a T4 Template you want to use with both, then you may have to create multiple .tt files, one for each IDE version, or require the developer to set a value in the .tt file manually.   I’m not sure if T4 Templates support any form of compiler switches like “#if (VS2010)”  statements, but it would definitely be nice in this case to switch between this option and one of the ones more compatible with VS 2008. Conclusion As you can see, we went from 3 options with Visual Studio 2008, to 5 options (plus one problem) with Visual Studio 2010.  As a whole, I think the changes are great, but the short-term growing pains during the migration may be annoying until we get used to our new found power. Hopefully this all made sense and was helpful to you.  If nothing else, I’ll just use it as a reference the next time I need to port a T4 template to Visual Studio 2010.  Happy T4 templating, and “May the fourth be with you!”

• Web Platform Installer bundles for Visual Studio 2010 SP1 - and how you can build your own WebPI bundles

  Visual Studio SP1 is  now available via the Web Platform Installer, which means you've got three options: Download the 1.5 GB ISO image Run the 750KB Web Installer (which figures out what you need to download) Install via Web PI Note: I covered some tips for installing VS2010 SP1 last week - including some that apply to all of these, such as removing options you don't use prior to installing the service pack to decrease the installation time and download size. Two Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Web PI packages There are actually two WebPI packages for VS2010 SP1. There's the standard Visual Studio 2010 SP1 package [Web PI link], which includes (quoting ScottGu's post): VS2010 2010 SP1 ASP.NET MVC 3 (runtime + tools support) IIS 7.5 Express SQL Server Compact Edition 4.0 (runtime + tools support) Web Deployment 2.0 The notes on that package sum it up pretty well: Looking for the latest everything? Look no further. This will get you Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 and the RTM releases of ASP.NET MVC 3, IIS 7.5 Express, SQL Server Compact 4.0 with tooling, and Web Deploy 2.0. It's the value meal of Microsoft products. Tell your friends! Note: This bundle includes the Visual Studio 2010 SP1 web installer, which will dynamically determine the appropriate service pack components to download and install. This is typically in the range of 200-500 MB and will take 30-60 minutes to install, depending on your machine configuration. There is also a Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Core package [Web PI link], which only includes only the SP without any of the other goodies (MVC3, IIS Express, etc.). If you're doing any web development, I'd highly recommend the main pack since it the other installs are small, simple installs, but if you're working in another space, you might want the core package. Installing via the Web Platform Installer I generally like to go with the Web PI when possible since it simplifies most software installations due to things like: Smart dependency management - installing apps or tools which have software dependencies will automatically figure out which dependencies you don't have and add them to the list (which you can review before install) Simultaneous download and install - if your install includes more than one package, it will automatically pull the dependencies first and begin installing them while downloading the others Lists the latest downloads - no need to search around, as they're all listed based on a live feed Includes open source applications - a lot of popular open source applications are included as well as Microsoft software and tools No worries about reinstallation - WebPI installations detect what you've got installed, so for instance if you've got MVC 3 installed you don't need to worry about the VS2010 SP1 package install messing anything up In addition to the links I included above, you can install the WebPI from http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx, and if you have Web PI installed you can just tap the Windows key and type "Web Platform" to bring it up in the Start search list. You'll see Visual Studio SP1 listed in the spotlight list as shown below. That's the standard package, which includes MVC 3 / IIS 7.5 Express / SQL Compact / Web Deploy. If you just want the core install, you can use the search box in the upper right corner, typing in "Visual Studio SP1" as shown. Core Install: Use Web PI or the Visual Studio Web Installer? I think the big advantage of using Web PI to install VS 2010 SP1 is that it includes the other new bits. If you're going to install the SP1 core, I don't think there's as much advantage to using Web PI, as the Web PI Core install just downloads the Visual Studio Web Installer anyways. I think Web PI makes it a little easier to find the download, but not a lot. The Visual Studio Web Installer checks dependencies, so there's no big advantage there. If you do happen to hit any problems installing Visual Studio SP1 via Web PI, I'd recommend running the Visual Studio Web Installer, then running the Web PI VS 2010 SP1 package to get all the other goodies. I talked to one person who hit some random snag, recommended that, and it worked out. Custom Web Platform Installer bundles You can create links that will launch the Web Platform Installer with a custom list of tools. You can see an example of this by clicking through on the install button at http://asp.net/downloads (cancelling the installation dialog). You'll see this in the address bar: http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appsxml=&appid=MVC3;ASPNET;NETFramework4;SQLExpress;VWD Notice that the appid querystring parameter includes a semicolon delimited list, and you can make your own custom Web PI links with your own desired app list. I can think of a lot of cases where that would be handy: linking to a recommended software configuration from a software project or product, setting up a recommended / documented / supported install list for a software development team or IT shop, etc. For instance, here's a link that installs just VS2010 SP1 Core and the SQL CE tools: http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appsxml=&appid=VS2010SP1Core;SQLCETools Note: If you've already got all or some of the products installed, the display will reflect that. On my dev box which has the full SP1 package, here's what the above link gives me: Here's another example - on a fresh box I created a link to install MVC 3 and the Web Farm Framework (http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appsxml=&appid=MVC3;WebFarmFramework) and got the following items added to the cart: But where do I get the App ID's? Aha, that's the trick. You can link to a list of cool packages, but you need to know the App ID's to link to them. • Register Game Object Components in Game Subsystems? (Component-based Game Object design)

  I'm creating a component-based game object system. Some tips: GameObject is simply a list of Components. There are GameSubsystems. For example, rendering, physics etc. Each GameSubsystem contains pointers to some of Components. GameSubsystem is a very powerful and flexible abstraction: it represents any slice (or aspect) of the game world. There is a need in a mechanism of registering Components in GameSubsystems (when GameObject is created and composed). There are 4 approaches: 1: Chain of responsibility pattern. Every Component is offered to every GameSubsystem. GameSubsystem makes a decision which Components to register (and how to organize them). For example, GameSubsystemRender can register Renderable Components. pro. Components know nothing about how they are used. Low coupling. A. We can add new GameSubsystem. For example, let's add GameSubsystemTitles that registers all ComponentTitle and guarantees that every title is unique and provides interface to quering objects by title. Of course, ComponentTitle should not be rewrited or inherited in this case. B. We can reorganize existing GameSubsystems. For example, GameSubsystemAudio, GameSubsystemRender, GameSubsystemParticleEmmiter can be merged into GameSubsystemSpatial (to place all audio, emmiter, render Components in the same hierarchy and use parent-relative transforms). con. Every-to-every check. Very innefficient. con. Subsystems know about Components. 2: Each Subsystem searches for Components of specific types. pro. Better performance than in Approach 1. con. Subsystems still know about Components. 3: Component registers itself in GameSubsystem(s). We know at compile-time that there is a GameSubsystemRenderer, so let's ComponentImageRender will call something like GameSubsystemRenderer::register(ComponentRenderBase*). pro. Performance. No unnecessary checks as in Approach 1. con. Components are badly coupled with GameSubsystems. 4: Mediator pattern. GameState (that contains GameSubsystems) can implement registerComponent(Component*). pro. Components and GameSubystems know nothing about each other. con. In C++ it would look like ugly and slow typeid-switch. Questions: Which approach is better and mostly used in component-based design? What Practice says?
