• Automating Firefox configuration settings

  Hi All, During web development work, I need to be able to quickly switch various config settings in Firefox. In particular I need to be able to: 1) Switch off cookies 2) Switch off javascript 3) Switch my user agent (I have the user-agent switcher add-on installed) and then back again. Instead of doing this manually, it would be great if i could add a "macro" button to my toolbar that I could simply click to toggle the three settings above. Anyone know if this is possible? Btw - Firefox Profiles doesn't really cut it. You can't dynamically switch profiles within a specific Firefox instance, which I need to be able to do. Btw2 - I got excited when i saw Greasemonkey, Chicken Foot, but it looks like these can only automate browsing/DOM tasks, and not with firefox configuration settings. Thanks Richard.

• Using JS script for "raining images". Can't seem to hide pre-loaded image

  I am trying to hide an image in a script pre-loading on the page. Below script makes images "rain" down the screen onClick. It functions well, but it displays the pre-loaded image itself on the page before the button is clicked. I'm trying to hide the image until the button is pressed. • How to use $.get data to replace certain elements in a webpage?

  I'm using jQuery 1.4.2 to navigate smoothly between similar webpages (in ff3). When clicking on a link, a javascript script should load the new html, filter out the right elements and replace them on the current page. It looks like the $(htmlcode) does not do the thing I expected. The actions below work when loading the page directly, but when using the $.get I have the following problems: the find function seems only to look inside a div element called id="page", which is inside the body element one of the elements has <script>...</script>, but the <script>...</script> is not present in the DOM of $(htmlcode). • C++ AMP, for loops to parallel_for_each loop

  I'm converting an algorithm to make use of the massive acceleration that C++ AMP provides. The stage I'm at is putting the for loops into the known parallel_for_each loop. Normally this should be a straightforward task to do but it appears more complex then I first thought. It's a nested loop which I increment using steps of 4 per iterations: for(int j = 0; j < height; j += 4, data += width * 4 * 4) { for(int i = 0; i < width; i += 4) { The trouble I'm having is the use of the index. I can't seem to find a way to properly fit this into the parallel_for_each loop. Using an index of rank 2 is the way to go but manipulating it via branching will do harm to the performance gain. • How to declare and use the name of a function from a json object?

  Hello, I have a json object collection of geo locations that I build in the server. Each of those objects has two properties: "marker" and "onClick". Marker is for storing a Google Maps marker object and the onClick stores the name of the function to be called when that marker is clicked on the map. When I'm pushing the location objects into an array using javascript in the client side, I create the markers and assign them to each location object within the array. My problem is that when I bind the marker with the onClick property, the function won't be found in the DOM and get an error. Is there a way to declare a property in a json object for using it on an event binding? Hope I could explain it clearly, if not, please let me know. Thanks!

  Hi, I need to take data from external file and format it, the problem is, i want to have that data stored into a variable. Load method works for me, because i need to load not the whole document, but just a part of it, but then again, i want to load to variable and not to some dom element. $.get can do this, but it doesn't support selectors. Is there any way I could make this? Now examples: Mine external file consists of a table, which has format like this: <table><tr><td><img /></td></tr><tr><td><a></a></td><td><span></span></td></tr></table> I need to extract img, a and span tags because I need them to be displayed in different order than they're now. In order to write a complete test script that branches the flow based on the some presence of some content in the popup window, I need to write a simple if condition that does something like if document.getElementById("xyz").value - that will run on the popup window and not the parent window. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? currently, the condition fails because it runs on the parent window. Also, how to extract some text from the dom and spit it out to a file at the end of the test?

• MVC design pattern in complex iPad app: is one fat controller acceptable?

  I am building a complex iPad application; think of it as a scrapbook. For the purpose of this question, let's consider a page with two images over it. My main view displays my doc data rendered as a single UIImage; this because I need to do some global manipulation over them. This is my DisplayView. When editing I need to instantiate an EditorView with my two images as subviews; this way I can interact with a single image, (rotate it, scale it, move it). When editing is triggered, I hide my DisplayView and show my EditorView. In a iPhone app, I'd associate each main view (that is, a view filling the screen) to a view controller. The problem is here there is just one view controller; I've considered passing the EditorView via a modal view controller, but it's not an option (there a complex layout with a mask covering everything and palettes over it; rebuilding it in the EditorView would create duplicate code). Presently the EditorView incorporates some logic (loads data from the model, invokes some subviews for fine editing, saves data back to the model); EditorView subviews also incorporate some logic (I manipulate images and pass them back to the main EditorView). I feel this logic belongs more to a controller. On the other hand, I am not sure making my only view controller so fat a good idea. What is the best, cocoa-ish implementation of such a class structure? Feel free to ask for clarifications. Cheers.

• Prototype Element.remove() not working in IE

  Hi there. I have a javascript function that gets a DIV by an ID and makes a clone.   Before you say "oh no, not again" here I'm stating my case. I'm parsing part of HTML output and the only thing I'm interested in is name and value attributes of each <input/ tag. HTML is actually HTML fragment, may not be well-formed. I don't have DOM or HTML parser and I don't try to parse nested elements anyway. The problem is that I don't know the order or number of attributes so it could be <input name="foo" value="boo"/> or <input type="hidden" name=foo> or <input id=blah value='boo' src="image.png" name="foo" type="img"/>. Is there a single regular expression that would get me values of name and value attribute in predictable order? I wouldn't have asked the question if I could assume that name attribute always precedes value but unfortunately this is not the case

• IE 7 can't bind event (using .live()) to dynamically created element using .load()

  Hi All - I'm having trouble getting IE7 to keep a click event bound to an element that is added to the DOM using .load(). Here's some code: $('.mybtn').live('click', function(e){ e.preventDefault(); $('#mypage').load('load-this-page.htm'); }); And here's the html <div id="mypage"> <a href="#" class="mybtn">clickme</a> // stuff goes here </div> On page load the click works but once the div is loaded via the clickme link the click stops working in IE7. The clickme link is within the div on load and also within the load() loaded html file that's why I'm using live(). This code works in FF 3.6, fyi. Anyone have any idea what's up (besides the fact the IE sucks balls)? Thanks!

• HTML5: Rendering absolute images using canvas

  I am experimenting with canvas as part of my HTML5 introduction. This constitutes as assignment work, but I am not asking for any help on the actual coursework at all. I am trying to write a rendering engine, but having no luck because once the image is drawn on canvas it looks very distorted, and not at the right dimensions of the image itself. I have made a animation engine that loads images into an array, and then iterates through them at a certain speed. This is not the problem, and I assume is not causing the issue as this was happening when I drawn an image to the canvas. I think this is natural behaviour for images to be scaled/skewed when the window is resized, so I conquered that by simply redrawing the whole thing once the window is resized. The images I am using are isometric, and drawn at a pixel level. Would this cause the distortion? It seems setting the dimensions on the drawImage() function are not working are all. I am using JavaScript for the manipulation and rendering of the canvas. I would normally try and work it out myself, but I do not have any time to ponder why because I have no idea why it is even scaling/skewing the image once it is drawn on the canvas. I cannot share the code for obvious reasons. I should also mention, the canvas's dimension is the total width of the viewport, as I am developing a game. My question is: Has anyone encountered this and how would I correct it? Thanks for your help.

• Custom stream wrappers, what could they be useful for in web applications?

  I suppose the concept is language agnostic, but I don't know what it's called in other languages. In PHP they're Stream Wrappers. In short, a wrapper class that allows manipulation of a streamable resource (resource that can be read to/written to/seek into, such as a file, a db, an url). For example, in a template engine (a view), upon including a template file such as: include "view.wrapper://path/to/my/template/file.phtml"; my custom wrapper, declared elsewhere and associated with "view.wrapper", would first intercepts the file to replace such things as short tags (<?=) with a more verbose counterpart (<?php echo). This allows developers to use short tags in views, even if the server isn't set to allow it. It can also be applied to the preprocessing of views pseudo syntax such as {@myVar} (e.g. replacing it with $this->myVar). This is only one application of custom stream wrappers, but the feature seems powerful enough to make me think that there are others that could make life a lot simpler for developers. What have you built, or thought about building, custom stream wrappers for? where have you seen some interesting implementations? I'm particularly interested in their applications in web development.

  I have tried to find a way to implement cross browser path normalizer. There IS a native way which is described here and functional example is here, but it works only in newest Opera (but not in IE, FF, Safari, Chrome). The native way uses pathElm.normalizedPathSegList and it converts all relative coordinates to absolute ones and represents all path segment types as a following subset of types: M,L,C,z. I have found only one javascript code and jsfiddled functional example of it, but it works only in IE and FF. Chrome gives "Uncaught Error: INDEX_SIZE_ERR: DOM Exception 1". How this could be fixed to work also in Opera, Safari and Chrome or is there any other way for normalizing SVG paths?

• Set timeout on third-party file request with jQuery

  I'm trying to integrate a script file hosted by a third party into a new web site. Currently, I'm adding a SCRIPT tag to the DOM for that third-party script file on document ready: $(document).ready( function() { var extScript = document.createElement('script'); extScript.type = 'text/javascript'; extScript.src = 'http://third-party.com/scriptfile.js'; $('head').append(extScript); }); function extScriptCallback() { $('#extWidgetContainer').show(); } But sometimes that third-party script file request times out or takes a long time to respond. So, for the sake of best practice, I want to provide alternative content if the external script takes longer than e.g. 10 seconds to load. How do I achieve this? I've looked at JavaScript's native setTimeout(), as well as jQuery's delay() function, but I'm not sure which I should use--or how. Grateful for any suggestions.

• jQuery/JavaScript: Trigger when preloaded

  Hello there, jQuery has the .ready() function, but I am unsure whether this is what I need: I set a default background image in CSS (imange 1 out of 4), once document is loaded (images and all, not only DOM); I want to start preloading background image 2 out of 4. Once that is loaded, I want to fade image 1 into image 2. Then I want to preload the next image (3 out of 4), once that is loaded, I want to fade from background image 2 into image 3, and finally preload image 4. Once image 4 is loaded, i would like to fade image 3 into image 4. After that, I want to cycle between the images with a set time interval. What strategy would I use to solve this? .load() function? • Is there a way to optimise finding text items on a page (not regex)

  After seeing several threads rubbishing the regexp method of finding a term to match within an HTML document, I've used the Simple HTML DOM PHP parser (http://simplehtmldom.sourceforge.net/) to get the bits of text I'm after, but I want to know if my code is optimal. It feels like I'm looping too many times. Is there a way to optimise the following loop? //Get the HTML and look at the text nodes $html = str_get_html($buffer); //First we match the <body> tag as we don't want to change the <head> items foreach($html->find('body') as $body) { //Then we get the text nodes, rather than any HTML foreach($body->find('text') as $text) { //Then we match each term foreach ($terms as $term) { //Match to the terms within the text nodes $text->outertext = str_replace($term, '<span class="highlight">'.$term.'</span>', $text->outertext); } } } For example, would it make a difference to determine check if I have any matches before I start the loop maybe?
