• How can I create a solid business case for upgrading our programmers to 256 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM?

  We have an environment based on Microsoft stack (VS2010, SQL Server, etc), and I firmly believe that we could improve productivity a little bit, having more RAM and a faster secondary SSD. What data do you advice to gather so I can solidify my request in such a way the advantages can be unbiasedly demonstrated? Currently we have only 6GB of RAM and slower HD drives, and at home I have a 128 GB SSD in my desktop and 16 GB of RAM (I also think is the max amount of memory supported by our workstations, if we could go bigger then better), so I can feel the difference and it's real. I also want to add that we are in an industry with plenty of money, so the issue actually is how to get a budget approval from management and spend it wisely to increase productivity.

• Gaining information from nodes of tree

  I am working with the tree data structure and trying to come up with a way to calculate information I can gain from the nodes of the tree. I am wondering if there are any existing techniques which can assign higher numerical importance to a node which appears less frequently at lower level (Distance from the root of the tree) than the same nodes appearance at higher level and high frequency. To give an example, I want to give more significance to node Book, at level 2 appearing once, then at level 3 appearing thrice. Someone found a game I made on the Internet, and expressed interest in buying it. We agreed upon a price, and, in the meantime, I removed the game's source from the Internet, just to be sure. Now, I'm wondering what to do next. These are the terms: He gets the game's source code, and only that, without the graphics (which weren't made by me). He gets the right to develop and sell the game. I get to keep the ownership of the original game, meaning that I can use it in my portfolio when applying for jobs, for example. The game gets to stay on its original site. But I am not sure how can I legally realize this. Which license can I use?

• Where can you find your first customers as a freelancer?

  I want to start doing freelance work, but no matter how I look at it, it seems like the best way to get customers and to have work most of the time, you have to already be in the freelancing game. Most freelancers I've talked to have had the same customers over the years or got new customers because their satisfied clients referred them. What I'd like to know from the successful people here that work as freelancers is how do you start doing business when you haven't yet set foot in freelancing? I want to start small, creating websites that won't require me to hire other people other than maybe a designer I already know. (I'd like to create desktop applications as well, but I think I should keep that for later when I'm more experienced) . I thought about localized Google ads or visiting companies and meeting the people in charge there, but I wouldn't know which kind of businesses to look for or if it's even a good way to approach this. Anyone care to share their personal startup experiences / advice that can help future freelancers?

• What are some easy techniques to scan books for new information?

  I find it irresistible to keep purchasing cheap programming and technical e-books in fields such as Drupal, PHP, etc., and also compulsively download free material made available such as those from Microsoft's developer blog... The main problem with the large library I've developed is that there are many chapters (especially the first few) in these books packed with information I already know, but with helpful tidbits hidden in between. The logical step would be to skip those chapters and read the ones I don't seem to know anything about, but I'm afraid I may lose out on really important information this way. But naturally it is tedious to have to read about variables, functions and objects all over again when you are trying to know more about the Registry pattern, for example. It's hard to research on the net for this, because my question itself seems vague and difficult to formulate into a single search query. I need people-advice - what do you do in this situation?

How can I do that manually, some good examples of WCF Systems (mostly on desktop applications over TCP). I'd like a book or documentation or anything else, that can give me advanced knowledge of WCF. After the initial data filling, google apps wishes me to prove the ownership of a domain, and has given me 4 choices: Add a DNS record to your domain's configuration Link to your Google Analytics account Upload an HTML file to your server Add a meta tag to your site's home page What is the differences between these, and how do I (if someone knows perhaps how to do it on Namecheap, it would be even better) complete this step in the process? • TreeMap randomly stops properly returning values

  I have the following TreeMap: TreeMap<String, Integer> distances = new TreeMap<String, Integer>(); and it contains both strings, "Face" and "Foo", with appropriate values, such that: System.out.println(distances); Yields: {Face=12, Foo=2} However, distances.get(Face) returns null, even though distances.get(Foo) properly returns 2. Previously, distances.get(Face) worked, but for some reason, it stopped working. Note I print out the map right before calling get() for both keys, so I haven't accidentally changed Face's value to null. Has anyone else ever encountered this problem? Is there anything I can do? I'm having a terrible time simply trying to figure out how to debug this problem.

• Is SharpDX mature enough to adopt yet or should I just start using SlimDX right now?

  I'm about to stop my game-project in XNA because from what I can gather it's development is coming to an end (and it's already behind current technology). Therefore, I need to adopt a new framework or API. I have just spent 2 days looking at C++ and decided it's really not for me - however I do find the raw access to DirectX appealing. SharpDX sounds like a good place to start, but it has no documentation and no code comments. I feel like it's not quite ready for use. I'm interested in the opinions of people that have used either or both of these frameworks, to help me decide for sure which one I should learn? Thanks for any advice.

• why not use unmanaged safe code in c#

  There is an option in c# to execute code unchecked. It's generally not advised to do so, as managed code is much safer and it overcomes a lot of problems. However I am wondering, if you're sure your code won't cause errors, and you know how to handle memory then why (if you like fast code) follow the general advice? I am wondering this since I wrote a program for a video camera, which required some extremely fast bitmap manipulation. I made some fast graphical algorithms myself, and they work excellent on the bitmaps using unmanaged code. Now I wonder in general, if you're sure you don't have memory leaks, or risks of crashes, why not use unmanaged code more often ? PS my background: I kinda rolled into this programming world and I work alone (I do so for a few years) and so I hope this software design question isn't that strange. I don't really have other people out there like a teacher to ask such things.

• Do you know a good html mailing list management software with admin levels?

  I'm basically looking for a program/app/script (can be commercial) which I can ideally install on a windows server (we can run asp, asp.net php mssql) we have different groups of people who send newsletters to web members, I want to bring it all into one app which I can monitor and control. Ideally it would be able to create html newsletters, (with some templates) track emails and click throughs. Manage email lists subscribe/unsubscribes. And importantly have different levels of admin, so a newsletter creator could log in and create and send off an email, it goes into a queue where a communications editor can have an overview of all newsletters and approve the sending of the emails or edit them before they are sent off. before I start coding something up myself I thought I'd ask if anyone has any advice! • Problem exporting SQL Server management Studio Express to Go Daddy

  I'm having a terrible time exporting SQL Server Management Studio Express tables to the Go Daddy webserver. Go Daddy support can't help either. I started by using Microsoft Database Publishing Wizard for SQL Server thinking it would be 'easy'....not! I ran into user/password errors even though I was using the user and password that was created for the SQL database in the Go Daddy site. I called help desk support at Go Daddy and went through several iterations of processes to get the thing working but it didn't. Finally, the support guy acted like his phone went on the blip and scuttled away. There has got to be someway to upload SQL Server to a webserver without a lot of drama. Any suggestions?

• Best way to address this Magento issue

  I am in need of some advice/pointers on how best to attack a problem I am faced with in Magento 1.4.0.1. Here is the scenario: Consider a product catalog of multiple thousands of products in which there are many and various retail markup percentages. There is a need to sell some of those products to other retailers, and I need a way to easily categorise them into percentrage markup groups, so that the other traders can easily purchase items from us without needing to call and confirm pricing. All products prices are added to the magento database including VAT - so the actual retail value is the starting point. I think this needs to be done by adding an attribute on the products that determines the maximum discount level that can be applied to any given product. Obviously, this would entail a massive amount of work to update every product. Is there a way to achieve what we need that I don't yet know about (within Magento)? Can single attribute values be mass-populated somehow, without affecting other attributes such as name/description/etc?

• Qt Certification Exams

  I'm wondering about doing a Qt Certification Exam this year, but I'm not 100% sure the investment is worth. I'm considering it because I think it could be a nice + on my resume, and as you know, I'm all for improving my software engineer persona. As I already earn a BSc and MSc degrees in computer stuff, I guess I see the certification process as some kind of adventure. Anyway, I know I'll spend a lot of time preparing myself for the exam and I just wanted to know if a Qt certification is worth the effort. Apparently there are 2 certificates that you can get in the Qt world: Nokia Certified Qt Developer (basic) Nokia Certified Qt Specialist (advanced) Nowadays I build cross-platform software in C++ and this exam would fit beautifully in my resume. My main concern is that, given the obscure future of Qt, I might be throwing time and money out the window. I'm looking for some advice regarding the usefulness of such certifications.

• AutoSSH for a robust tunnel

  I'm trying to start an ssh tunnel from A to B and have it run despite things like: period network/wifi drops on A and remote server reboot on B. My ssh tunnel starts using upstart script on A with event start on (net-device-up IFACE=eth0) I've found autossh which is supposed to handle these kinds of things, but had some trouble getting it to work. The upstart executes: autossh -M 0 -2qTN -o "ServerAliveInterval 30" -o "ServerAliveCountMax 2" -L 5678:somehost:5678 user@B However when I log into B and kill -9 that tunnel session, autossh just exits with "Connection to B closed by remote host." That's not what I expected autossh to do. Any advice on how to set this up? Any GUI service monitoring utilities out there that essentially display a green light if a service is up? Thanks.

• HDMI audio output problems with Radeon card

  No matter how much advice I follow, I still cannot get any audio to come out through my HDMI connection. I've tried downloading the latest proprietary FGLRX graphics drivers, and I've also gone into /etc/default/grub and altered GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" into this GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1" But still I cannot get any sound nor can I get HDMI sound output to show up in Sound Settings or Pulse Audio Volume Control. I can get video to show up just fine on my monitor through HDMI so I'm sure this problem is fixable! I know this is an old problem with Ubuntu, but any new strategies into the problem would be much appreciated. With that being said, here are some of my specs: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS AMD Radeon HD 7520G

• How do I get HTML Markup for createRange() in Firefox

I am definitely in new territory here, so am sure there are more issues to arise, but right now, I am trying to get Firefox to give me the same result as IE. In IE, I can access the HTML code of the selection by using the (apparently IE-only) htmlText property of the object returned by createRange(). What I am looking for is the Firefox equivalent to that (or a function that I can use to give me the same result). Anyone know how to do this?

  Hi, Im trying to use the fileupload control. Im using Visual Web Developer Express on my desktop. My web application is working fine except I cant use the fileUpload control. I get the following error: ERROR: Access to the path (My_Directory) is denied I searched and it appears to be a permissions problem. So I attempted to add the user ASPNET and give appropriate permissions to the directory, however, I was unable to add user "ASPNET". User "ASPNET" was not found. So then I followed the following directions to add user ASPNET via Control Panel Administration Computer management.   I use a service application I created in Delphi. My problem is that it is sometimes terminated by the operating system and I don't know why this happens. When I go the the system events, I can find a piece of information like this one: Event ID: 7034, The [...] service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this [...] time(s). I know you can't give me an answer why this happens, but could you please give me a clue what to pay attention to to find the reason of that behaviour? • Possible for one developer to work on a site thats on another developer's server?

  Sorry for the confusing title. Let me explain: I am currently trying to get a site developed. My current developer has taken the site about as far as I think they are capable of and I am planning on hiring another developer to put the finishing touches on it, debug it and upgrade some of the more technical details. The site is hosted on my current developer's server. They are scheduled to work on it until mid-April, at which point they will transfer the site to my server. I would like the new developer to get started on the upgrades to the site as soon as possible. So my question is this: Is it possible for the new developer to start working on upgrades to the site while it is still on the old developer's server (and without the old developer knowing about it)? Would the new developer have to create a mirror site and work on it that way? I'm having trouble imagining if this is possible so any advice you can offer would be much appreciated!

  Attempting a new installation of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on what was a dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS laptop ( Sony intel i3 core 64 bit with 500GB HDD). I followed the following procedure Install Ubuntu • has at least 4.4 GB available, is connected to the internet, download updates while installing and install this third-party are all ticked this time • I chose the Erase disk and install Ubuntu option ( since I want to have only Ubuntu 12.04 LTS operating system in my disk) Now shows The entire disk will be used • 501GB free disk I clicked the install now button. All data copied to the hard drive ( it was copied OK), askes for location, keyboared layout, and who are you. Started to install the Ubuntu 12.04 operating system. After some minutes, I got a report Installation failed, the installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again. So, Please give me simple advice on how to proceed. Thank you

• Licensing approach for .NET library that might be used desktop / web-service / cloud environment

  I am looking for advice how to architect licensing for a .NET library. I am not asking for tool/service recommendations or something like that. My library can be used in a regular desktop application, in an ASP.NET solution. And now Azure services come into play. Currently, for desktop applications the library checks if the application and company names from the version history are the same as the names the key was generated for. In other cases the library compares hardware IDs. Now there are problems: an Azure-enabled web-application can be run on different hardware each time (AFAIK) sometimes the hardware ID for the same hardware changes unexpectedly checking the hardware ID or version info might not be allowed in some circumstances (shared hosting for example) So, I am thinking about what approach I can take to architect a licensing scheme that: is friendly to customers (I do not try to fight piracy, but I do want to warn the customer if he uses the library on more servers than he paid for) can be used when there is no internet connection can be used on shared hosting What would you recommend?
