• What is the weirdest language you have ever programmed in?

  For me, it was Forth, way back at the end of the eighties! Yes, almost prehistory. But I was an un-degree-ed programmer, unable to afford college, self-taught C and Assembly, and not enough experience to open doors. I was invited to work in software engineering, my dream job by the engineering manager of my company, but...I had to do it in Forth, and the company was willing to teach me. The position was my start into embedded systems programming, and man did I learn a lot! Like, just how easy C and Assembly language REALLY could be! But it was a good journey, and though I never coded again in Forth, my fear of not being able to learn C and Assembly proficiently disappeared... ;-)

• Help me refactor this nasty Ruby if/else statement

  Hello, so I have this big method in my application for newsletter distribution. Method is for updating rayons and I need to assign a user to rayon. I have relation n:n through table colporteur_in_rayons which has attributes since_date and until_date. • How Do I Rollout WP-Cache To 1000 WordPress Blogs?

  My client has 1000 WordPress blogs hosted on a server for customers. Each one is in its own domain through cpanel and SuPHP, running in CGI mode on Apache2.2. Now he wants me (I'm the PHP programmer) to get WP-Cache loaded out on each of these blogs and not just activated, but enabled. He also wants the timeout value set to 2 days instead of the default setting. I have root on LAMP. What is the preferred way to roll out an update to each blog such that on a page view, it sees if WP-Cache is enabled or not. If not, it needs to copy it out from a central source, activate it, and then enable it along with the different timeout value being used.

Would you (and why) hire a foreigner, which experience is documented in CV and portfolio, which can communicate in english (with grammar mistakes, but still)? My question is, as a developer which would be the best language to use when targeting ubuntu Mono c# or python as a commercial concern. please note that I am not interested in the technical aspects but strictly the commercials of where Ubuntu is heading, I see that there is a lot of work done within using Python and thinking that maybe with the whole Mono issue of who "might" purchase them.

Public static extern int EventCount; Is not working; the VS2010 compiler won't let me have an extern int. Even with a DLLImport. • How to abandon a hg merge?

  I'm new to collaborating with Mercurial. My situation: Another programmer changed rev 1 of a file to replace 4-space indents with 2-space indent. (I.e. changed every line.) Call that rev 2, pushed to the remote repo. I've committed substantive changes rev 1 with various code changes in my local workspace. Call that rev 3. I've hg pulled and hg merged without a clear idea of what was going on. The conflicts are myriad and not really substantive. So I really wish I'd changed my local repo to 2-space indents before merging; then the merge will be trivial (i'm supposing). But I can't seem to back up. I think I need to hg update -r 3 but it says abort: outstanding uncommitted merges. How can I undo the merge, changes spacing in my local repo, and remerge?

• Is it really wrong to version documents using CouchDB's behaviour?

  This is one of those "I know I shouldn't do this but it's oh so convenient." questions. Sorry about that. I plan to use CouchDB for storing a bunch of documents and keeping their entire revision history. CouchDB does the versioning automatically, but it is strongly discouraged for programmer's use: "You cannot rely on document revisions for any other purpose than concurrency control." From what I've found on the CouchDB wiki, the versions can get deleted either during compaction or during replication. As far as I can tell, Compaction must always be triggered manually and Replication occurs only when there's more than one database server. The question is: if I won't run compaction and will use only single database instance for my documents, can I just use CouchDB's document versioning and expect it to work? What other problems I might run into? E.g. does not running compaction hurt the performance or consume significantly more disk space (than if I did handle the versioning manually)?

• As a team should we develop locally and merge into the dev server, or develop on the dev server?

  Hey, Recently I was tasked with writing up formal procedures for a team based development enviroment. We have several projects with multiple modules each. Right now there are only two programmers, however there are plans to expand to 4-6 programmers. Each programmer will be working on the same project and possibly pages which may cause over writing or error issues. So far the ideal solution I have thought up is: Local development (WAMP/VM or some virtual server instance on their own machine). Once a developer has finished their developments, they check it into the CVS Repository and merge it wih other fixes etc. The CVS version is then deployed to the primary dev server for testing by the devs. The MySQL DAtabases are kept on the primary dev server and users may remotely connect to it. Any Schema / Data alterations are run through a DB Admin who will notify all devs of any DB Changes (Which should be rare). Does anyone see an issue with this or have a better solution?

• General approach for posting business logic status messages to UI?

  Hello all. I have been struggling with this question for awhile now, and I haven't reached a conclusion. I'm not typically a UI programmer, so forgive the noobishness. I'm writing a typical application with a UI layer (WPF) and a business layer. I want to post status messages to the UI from the business layer (perhaps deep within the business layer), but I don't want the business layer to have any knowledge of the UI. Is there a generally accepted pattern for this? I was thinking to have a message queue of some sort to which the business layer posts status messages, and have the view model of the UI subscribe to that queue and intercept messages from the queue and route them to the UI. Is that a good approach? Is there somewhere else I should start? Thank you.

A quick wikipedia search shows: RPC: Remote procedure call (RPC) is an Inter-process communication technology that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space (commonly on another computer on a shared network) without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction. Web Service: Web services are typically application programming interfaces (API) or web APIs that are accessed via Hypertext Transfer Protocol and executed on a remote system hosting the requested services. Web services tend to fall into one of two camps: Big Web Services[1] and RESTful Web Services. I am not quite clear what the real difference between the two things. It seems that one thing could belongs to RPC and is kind of web service at the same time. Is Web Service a higher level representation of RPC?

• C++: How would I get unix time?

  I need a function or way to get the UNIX epoch in seconds, much like how I can in PHP using the time function. I can't find any method except the time() in ctime which seems to only output a formatted date, or the clock() function which has seconds but seems to always be a multiple of 1 million, nothing with any resolution. I wish to measure execution time in a program, I just wanted to calculate the diff between start and end; how would a C++ programmer do this? EDIT: time() and difftime only allow resolution by seconds, not ms or anything too btw.

• Which Visual Studio 2010 edition for sole developer

  I am the sole .net developer for a small company. My projects span many .net technologies including WinForms, WPF, SQL, XNA, Linq, WCF, WTF?, and others. I struggle staying on top of all these projects so I'm looking to make my life easier with the release of VS2010. Without a mentor I rely heavily on StackOverflow and whatever else Google comes up with. Should I convince my company to get an edition with an MSDN subscription? Is it one of those things where once you have it, you can't imagine life without it? What about the source control that comes with VS2010, do you all find it better than an SVN server? We're looking to hire another programmer this year, would I be best off getting a Team edition of VS2010 to be best prepared for that hire? Thanks!

• Segmentation Fault when trying to push a string to the back of a list.

I have tried researching this issue and have found some information on this, but nothing that seems to help with my problem. I am using a rather basic C++ compiler, with little debugging utilities and I've not used C++ in quite some time (even then it was only a small amount). • What is the best method of assessment for computer science students?

  This question is a bit more philosophical so feel free to remove if you like but it's been bugging me for the last 4 years! As a final year student I find that exams can be often be passed with a couple of days of cramming, without necessarily retaining or understanding the content i.e. a regurgitation of lecture notes is often enough to gain high marks. A friend of mine is about to graduate with an honours degree whose final year evaluation was based solely on practical work (a project, assignment marks and the creation of a poster) yet all of this work could have been completed by a third party. Personally I don't think either of these methods of assessment is sufficient as I am currently on track for a 1st class honours in artificial intelligence and computer science and believe this is mostly due to my skill in passing exams not my skill as a programmer or my vast in depth knowledge of any of the subjects I have "studied". Surely there is a better way to assess our skills - isn't there?

• Is GOTO really as evil as we are led to believe?

  I'm a young programmer, so all my working life I've been told GOTO is evil, don't use it, if you do, your first born son will die. Recently, I've realized that GOTO actually still exists in .NET and I was wondering, is GOTO really as bad as they say, or is it just because everyone says you shouldn't use it, so that's why you don't. I know GOTO can be used badly, but are there any legit situations where you may possibly use it. The only thing I can think of is maybe to use GOTO to break out of a bunch of nested loops. I reckon that might be better then having to "break" out of each of them but because GOTO is supposedly always bad, I would never use it and it would probably never pass a peer review. What are your views? Is GOTO always bad? Can it sometimes be good? Has anyone here actually been gutsy enough to use GOTO for a real life system?

  I am trying to do a word calculator .. read words from a file .. translate them into numbers and then calculate the result .. i managed to do all of that but i think i have two bugs in my program .. I mainly have two functions ... extract(Words), calculate( Words,0). extract will read from the file .. and then return a list of Words .. ex: [one,plus,three] .. now calculate will translate the value for these words into numbers and calculate .. i managed to do that also .. now the bugs are : i must stop reading and terminate if i encounter stop in the file .. so if Words was [stop] End. i tried the following ... execute :- extract(Words), Words = [stop],nl,print('Terminating ...'),!. execute :- extract(Words), calculate( Words,0). it successfully terminates .. but it skips lines as i extract more than once .. i have tried to do .. execute :- extract(Words), Words \= [stop],execute(Words). execute(Words) :- calculate( Words,0). if the Words is not stop .. then go and calculate .. but its not working !! i appreciate the help .. • JVM specification and Java compiler code useful for SCJP preparation ?

  I'm preparing the SCJP exam with the almost official study book ("SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065") I understand that Java programming is writting code that fulfills a certain high-level contract; So that Java can stay platform-independent. However, I have trouble understanding and remembering things when it comes to highly specific SCJP items (and they are numerous) The book stays high-level and does not provide examples of how one compiler would handle things. This is the same thing for runtime issues (JVM level): things are too much abstract for me. Rules often seems arbitrary and therefore, with no well defined purpose, are difficult to remember. Or maybe it's that sometimes I just don't get the underlying purpose. And here is the question: Would a JVM specification and/or some java compiler code help in preparing the SCJP? Have you had the need for such material or is the book sufficient enough? Also, please share the resources you used, apart from the book.

  Duplicate Should identifiers and comments be always in English or in the native language of the application and developers? For people who are not native English speakers, which language do you use to declare variables, classes, etc. ? I had to continue a project from a Spanish guy. Everything was written in Spanish. Since this time, I have decided to use English identifiers ( variables, classes, file names) and write comments in french. Everything was in french before that. What are the general recommendations about that practice? Do you use English everywhere knowing that no English people will work on your project ? • Can I program Nvidia's CUDA using only Python or do I have to learn C?

  I guess the question speaks for itself. I'm interested in doing some serious computations but am not a programmer by trade. I can string enough python together to get done what I want. But can I write a program in python and have the GPU execute it using CUDA? Or do I have to use some mix of python and C? The examples on Klockner's (sp) "pyCUDA" webpage had a mix of both python and C, so I'm not sure what the answer is. If anyone wants to chime in about Opencl, feel free. I heard about this CUDA business only a couple of weeks ago and didn't know you could use your video cards like this. thx

• Python editor/IDE for OS X

  As a (reasonably) new Python programmer, what IDEs or editors would you recommend for Python programming on OS X and why (i.e. what features/capabilities/workflow techniques really help)? I've used Xcode and played a bit with TextMate but I can't really say that either have really hit the spot for me (although TextMate's code completion is pretty neat, I think i've been spoilt with code-completion facilities provided by editors for statically-typed languages so maybe i'm subconsciously comparing apples and oranges) I'm looking to increase my efficacy with Python and any tips would be appreciated. I know people have asked similar questions for Python IDEs in general but I am specifically concentrating on OS X and the 'Mac way'. If Xcode or TextMate are thought highly of, perhaps some suggestions as to how I could get the most benefit from the tools would help.

For example consider this class tree: org.clixel.ClxBasic - org.clixel.ClxObject - org.clixel.ClxSprite - WindowsGame1.test Then consider this code public List<ClxBasic> objects = new List<ClxBasic>(); foreach(GroupTester tester in objects) { tester.GroupTesterOnlyProperty = true; } tester.GroupTesterOnlyProperty is a property created in GroupTester. Is there some way to make something like this work, like an overload of foreach, or another snippet that might help me? I want to make it easy for a programmer to sort through the lists grabbing only what type they need.
