• How can I add missing Fn-key controls?

  I have a Toshiba NB200 netbook. The majority of the Fn-key controls come through fine and are recognized by my OS (I'm running Kubuntu 12.04/KDE 4.9) but according to the markings on my keyboard there are a few more that xev isn't detecting, i.e. Fn + F9 (touchpad toggle) Fn + 1 (increase screen resolution) Fn + 2 (decrease screen resolution) Fn + Space (zoom) Now, I don't particularly need those last three but I thought it would be quite useful to remap them to, say, Media Previous, Media Next, and Media Play, but I can't do that if the signals aren't getting through. Is there any way for me to persuade the OS to recognize these keystrokes? I've tried using acpi_listen to detect scancodes but it doesn't pick up any of function-related Fn-key strokes (like Audio Mute, which does work by the way).

  So...my recruiter just called me to confirm my interview on Thurs. He also mentioned that I am going to be asked to answer for two analytic questions. He gave me a little bit about those questions. There are eight balls. One of them is defective. There are three incandescent light bulbs inside a room, but switches are placed outside. These are all he said. I think that these are not completed question. Anyone knows what questions these are?? Does my question belong to programmer.stackexchange.com? • Ubuntu One pretends to sychronize files, but it doesn't

  I have my Ubuntu One account configured in both Ubuntu 11.10 and iOS (ipod-touch). The photos from the iOS were successfully uploaded, but in Ubuntu One, although it shows the "syncing" and "synchronized" marks over the icons, the files are not showing in the website (one.ubuntu.com). In short: My files are not showing in the Ubuntu One website, although the icons have the "uploaded" mark. Any idea what can be wrong here? obs1: Also, not sure if it's related, the icon-marks will show only when I open the Ubuntu One Control Panel. It shows the message "file was uploaded", but there's nothing online. obs2: The folder I'm trying to synchronize is 30mb size. And my connection is 8mbps.

  I am personalising my Gnome-Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 I would like to disable the feature to open the Gnome's Dashboard when I close the last Window in a Workspace. Edit to clarify: The dashboard is available only in GNOME Shell. The dashboard opens if you press the windows key (aka SUPER) or if you move the mouse to the upper left corner. If you close the last window of a workspace, but there are open windows on other workspaces, the dashboard opens automatically. The latter behaviour is annoying if you do not want to use the dashboard to open new windows or to change workspace. There are many ways to to both (Gnome do, Docky, keyboard shortcuts, clicking on something on the desktop, ...). • What Are Some Tips For Writing A Large Number of Unit Tests?

  I've recently been tasked with testing some COM objects of the desktop app I work on. What this means in practice is writing a large number (100) unit tests to test different but related methods and objects. While the unit tests themselves are fairly straight forward (usually one or two Assert()-type checks per test), I'm struggling to figure out the best way to write these tests in a coherent, organized manner. What I have found is that copy and Paste coding should be avoided. It creates more problems than it's worth, and it's even worse than copy-and-paste code in production code because test code has to be more frequently updated and modified. I'm leaning toward trying an OO-approach using but again, the sheer number makes even this approach daunting from an organizational standpoint due to concern with maintenance. It also doesn't help that the tests are currently written in C++, which adds some complexity with memory management issues. Any thoughts or suggestions?

• Print Problem: Page Squeezed in Half

  I've just managed to successfully set up my printer (Canon MX320) using the Printing app on Ubuntu 12.04. However the only 1 remaining problem is that each time I tried to print it will only print the file on the top half of the page only: meaning that for some reason, the printer "squeezes" the whole content of each page in the file to fit into the top half of the page only (so the proportion in the print-out is not correct vertically). This happens with every type of file I tried to print (Documents, Images, Web pages). I checked the Printing's setting & properties and couldn't find anything related to this issue yet and I've already made sure to set all the information correct (paper size, source etc.). The Print Preview always display correctly on the screen, but it's only the actual print-out that shows this problem. I also tried with several different types of papers (A4, photos etc.) but the result is always the same: the printer keeps putting the content in the top half of the paper only.

• Subscribe/Publish Model in Web-based Application (c#) - Best Practices for Event Handlers

  I was recently exposed to a desktop application that uses an publish/subscribe model to handle commands, events, etc. I can't seem to find any good examples of using this in a web application, so I wonder if I am off base in trying to use this for web based development (on the server side)? I'm using asp.net c#. My main question in regards to the design is: When using a publish/subscribe model, is it better to have generic commands/events that pass no parameters and then have the subscribers look at static context objects that contain the data relevant to the event? Or is it better to create custom arguments for every event that contain data related to the event? The whole concept of a global container seems so convenient but at the same time seems to break encapsulation. Any thoughts or best practices from anyone who has implemented this type of model in a web based application? Even suggestions on this model out of the scope of my question are appreciated.

• Boot Ubuntu on smartphone SD card?

  Now here's what I want: Ubuntu on the SD card that lives in my phone. I like using Ubuntu portably and my phone as a flash drive, but I haven't been able to make these work together yet. I've tried booting off my Huawei U8800 (Android 2.2) and Nokia E66 with a micro-SD card (with 11.10, boots OK in a card-reader) on an eeepc 901 without luck. The Huawei doesn't show up in the BIOS boot menu. BIOS sees the Nokia but halts at "Boot error". I guess this is related to the phone's flash drive emulation and how it handles bootsectors, but I don't know enough about how that works to go any further. Has anyone succeeded in this?

  As part of being a programmer, you often are asked to provide estimates/ make slideware / do technical demos for Sales teams to present to end-clients. Sometimes we go along for the 'technical' discussions or 'strategic capability planning' or some similar mumbo-jumbo. Sometimes, you kind of know which ones are totally going to fail and are not worth pursuing but the Sales guys present fake optimism and extract 'few more slides' out of you or the 'last conference call'. These don't lead to anywhere and are just a waste of time from other tasks for the week. My question is how do you get out of these situations without coming across as non-cooperative. Updated after Kate Gregory's answer: The problem is related to projects we know are doomed (from the technical feedback we've received) But Sales ain't convinced since they've just had a call higher up the management chain - so it's definitely going ahead !

If you click on a different point on the map, then your character will begin walking to the new point. Track current coords and target coords If target coords are exactly up, left, right, or down, then increment appropriate direction until you get there Implied else: target coords are in a quadrant. For each game frame, alternate incrementing current coordinates in the north and then east directions.

  I am happily learning Ubuntu more closely now. I came across the process ubuntu-geoip-provider in system monitor. Is is used for tracking or for gathering nearest server info, or for syncing time with Internet, or perhaps for all these things? I searched for it but not enough information came through. If it is tracking, what kind of info it is gathering, and why it is doing that? It is based here: /usr/lib/ubuntu-geoip I just wanted more detailed information for that. Also, can this be disabled? Is disabling recommended, or would doing so cause dependency-related (or other) problems?

• Message "Getting information" don't close

  I have Windows 7 x64 I installed this software and I have a problem. I like Ubuntu but I feel the softwares related Linux often have problems. We each time need to seek to resolve the malfunctions. my problem is , I am getting a message as Getting information, please wait and it don't disappear. My firewall is completely deactivate and I already go to the UAC or the firewall to allow the "exe" of the Ubuntu One software in the settings. Nothing runs.Linux never run at the first time. • choppy streaming audio

  I could use some help troubleshooting choppy streaming audio. The problem is jerky playback regardless of audio or video with audio. Both Chromium and Firefox have the problem, however files played directly on the machine with Rhythmbox sound just fine. I'm running 12.04 LTS on a C2D T9300. • How to safely and painlessly switch from Kubuntu to Lubuntu?

  I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. But when I execute sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, it gives me an error of the following essence: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lubuntu-desktop : Depends: usb-modeswitch but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. So, I investigate the modeswitch problem and get The following packages have unmet dependencies: usb-modeswitch : Depends: usb-modeswitch-data (>= 20110227-1~) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. But: Reading state information... Done usb-modeswitch-data is already the newest version. So, my question is: what actions should I take in order to obtain a clean and fresh installation of Lubuntu? • Network printer gets disabled occasionally

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and have a HP-Laserjet-3005P network printer. Occasionally (perhaps related to rebooting) the printer, which is setup as the default printer, becomes disabled. After realizing that I'm not getting anything printed, I must then open printing preferences and click on "enabled". Then it prints happily until the next time that it becomes disabled... Any ideas why this is happening and/or how I could fix it? I know I'm giving very little information, I can't think of anything else to give...if there's something I should be providing, please let me know.

• Most efficient way to generate 2D portraits

  Hey, I am not sure if this is a fitting question for gamedev, or if it is too art related. I am currently trying, to create 2D character protraits for my game. At first I tried to draw them and even though it helped polishing my drawing skills the end result either required way too much time or it simply looked like it was created by a grade school kid. So I am currently looking into some tools which from which people like me who are not out of the art-world might benefit. Especially tools which can create a 3D head+hair, so that I can render them. I have tried several 3D generation tools such as makehead and makehuman to create the basic head-shape. But I have to admit I am not well versed in what other options are available/what has the best quality/etc.

• What is the best certification for the self-taught ASP.Net programmer? [closed]

  I learned the C#.Net language from books and many other resources then i did some good projects with ASP.Net "Web Forms & MVC". But i wanna a good certificate to get a better work out of my country as i suppose. I've two choices: Apply for a " college / institute " and start study academic courses to be more professional and maybe in two years I'll "hopefully" graduate with this college certificate. Apply for kind of " Certifications by Companies " like MCTS from Microsoft or something like that and study their straightforward courses then maybe with three or four months I'll get this "Not official Certificate". Is the second type of certifications good for learning and work or the best is the hard way ?.
