• Port 80 is being used by SYSTEM (PID 4), what is that?

  I am trying to use port 80 for my application server, but when I perform "netstat -aon" I get TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4 When I look up the process in task manager, it shows PID 4 is SYSTEM, thats it, not extension... nothing, just "SYSTEM". Whats going on here? I'm afraid to end this process, what do I do? UPDATE: I've solved this through a stackoverflow question. • Javascript: replacing newlines with <br/> working in FF and SAFARI and not working in IE

  I was thinking that replacing \n with with javascript was quite a simple task, but it seems not to be so. Posts in Ask Ben or StackOverflow suggest that something as simple as: dst= dst.replace (/\n/g, "<br/>"); $("div.descr").html(dst); will get the job done. Indeed, this work in FF and Safari but not in IE. Text has been created in a textarea and then stored in a database, then retrieved without further processing. It works using FF on windows and Safari on Mac. IE on windows, nada. Is it a major bug in my head? Is it a JQuery issue? Have some idea about how to solve this? And possible reason for? Many thanks

• Limit the number of cron jobs runnging a PHP script

  I have a daily cron job that grabs 10 users at a time and does a bunch of stuff with them. There are 1000's of users that are part of that process every day. I don't want the cron jobs to overlap as they are heavy on server load. They call stuff from various APIs so I have timeouts and slow data fetching to contend with. I've tried using a flag to mark a cron job as running, but it's not reliable enough as some PHP scripts may time out or fail in various ways. Is there a good way to stop a cron job from calling the PHP script multiple times, or controlling the number of times it is called, so there are only 3 instances for example? I'd prefer a solution in the PHP if possible. Any ideas? At the moment I'm storing the flag as a value in a database, is using a lock type file any better as in here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/851872/does-a-cron-job-kill-last-cron-execution ?

• Anyone realize success using Apple Mac OS 10.6 and Parallels 5 for a Visual Studio Dev machine?

  Greetings my wonderful StackOverflow family :) I grew up using Windows and switched to OSX as a Computer Science major in College. I've recently started my first real software developer job, and have a ThinkPad and Windows XP for developing ASP.NET / MS SQL applications (Visual Studio 2008). Question: Basically, I am wondering if any developers out there have had real success creating ASP.NET applications on a Mac using a VM? I've been fighting with Parallels 5 all week and finally have Windows 7 and VS 2008 running but my hot-keys are all screwed up. Is it worth the work to keep beating this thing into submission? Should I give up? Should I give Mono a try instead? Thanks Folks, I can't wait to see what you all think!

• Immutability of big objects

  Hi StackOverflow! I have some big (more than 3 fields) Objects which can and should be immutable. Every time I run into that case i tend to create constructor abominations with long parameter lists. It doesn't feel right, is hard to use and readability suffers. It is even worse if the fields are some sort of collection type like lists. A simple addSibling(S s) would ease the object creation so much but renders the object mutable. What do you guys use in such cases? I'm on Scala and Java, but i think the problem is language agnostic as long as the language is object oriented. Solutions I can think of: "Constructor abominations with long parameter lists" The Builder Pattern Thanks for your input!

• How to effectively draw on desktop in C#?

  I want to draw directly on the desktop in C#. From searching a bit, I ended up using a Graphics object from the Desktop HDC (null). Then, I painted normally using this Graphics object. The problem is that my shapes get lost when any part of the screen is redrawn. I tried a While loop, but it actually ends up drawing as fast as the application can, which is not the update rate of the desktop. Normally, I would need to put my drawing code in a "OnPaint" event, but such thing does not exist for the desktop. How would I do it? • ValidateInput Attribute Doesn't Seem To Work in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm trying to get around the "potentially dangerous Request.Form value" error and I'm having no luck. Yes, yes, I've read all the other StackOverflow related questions and none of them seem to get me closer to an answer. I am using [ValidateInput(false)] on all related controller actions...and I've checked many times. I'm using ValidateRequest='false' in all the related ASPX views. I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 Preview 1, but I don't think that's an issue since the error is being generated lower in the framework; Page.ProcessRequest to be exact. I can't see anything I'm doing wrong, I even set <page validateRequest='false'> in the web.config and that didn't solve it either. HELP!!!!!

• Fade a color to white (increasing brightness)

  I want to make a text box in .NET "glow" yellow, and then "fade" to white (basically, by incrementally increasing the brightness). I think Stackoverflow does this after you've posted an answer. I know that increasing brightness is not all that simple (it's not just uniformly increasing/decreasing RGB), but I'm not sure how to do this. Perfect color accuracy is not important for this. I am using C#, although VB examples would be just fine, too. Edit: This is for Winforms.

  I have a big time trying to either convert a string into a integer or multiply two integers. I can't convert the string into integer because it's resulting me into a boolean (when I'm using var_dump). I can convert the other integer in string, but I'm unable to multiply it. I have this: <? $fees=$commerce->cart->get_total(); $payfee = str_replace('&nbsp;&euro;', '', $fees); $payfee = str_replace(',','', $payfee); //this is the string $fee = 0.025; $paypal = $payfee * $fee; //this thing is not working ?> I tried converting the payfee in integer, but still can't make it work. However, Wikipedia says that "NLBS is intended for ... stateless applications". Our web application, however, is absolutely "stateful": it is a closed site to which users will have access by login and password, and information for every user will be different: people will see their own trades and operations. Should we still use NLB in this scenario? Thank you.

  What Unix program generates "diff"s between text files (or INSERT/UPDATE/DELETEs for databases) in such a way that the order that the "diff"s are applied in is irrelevant, and the result is the same regardless of order. Etherpad used to do something like this. Example (for a given document or database): % Adam makes a change X, then Bob makes a change Y, then Adam makes another change Z. % However, because of network latency, Adam sees the changes in this order: XZY, while Bob sees them in this order: YXZ. % However, the code/changes are written so that XYZ and YXZ yield the same result. Note: ideally, this can be done without having to do X/Y/Z inverse at any point. • How to code a batch file to copy and rename the most recently dated file?

  I'm trying to code a batch file to copy only the most recently dated file in a given folder to another directory on the local machine, and simultaneously rename it as it does. I've found a very similar question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97371/batch-script-to-copy-newest-file and have managed to cobble together the below code from other forums too, but have hit a brick wall as it only results in the batch file itself being copied to the destination folder. It doesn't matter to me where the batch file itself sits in order for this to run. The source folder is C:! • Django: Determining if a user has voted or not

  I have a long list of links that I spit out using the below code, total votes, submitted by, the usual stuff but I am not 100% on how to determine if the currently logged in user has voted on a link or not. I know how to do this from within my view but do I need to alter my below view code or can I make use of the way templates work to determine it? • Rectangular BackColor of selection in RichTextBox

  Background: I'm going to start studying/coding at the local university's library. Since I'm not a student, I won't be able to utilize their wireless internet access. Since StackOverflow is such a great resource, I want to be able to take it with me, so I'm building a small desktop application to load/search/display the most recent data dumps. Problem: I want to display code blocks in the same sort of rectangular block as this site does, so I played with the RichTextBox control to try to create this effect. Unfortunately, the RichTextBox.SelectedBackColor property only colors the actual text, when what I want is a rectangle reaching to the outer limits of the selection. I am looking for recommendations for books, articles, sites, etc for learning more about test driven development specifically compatible with or aimed at Python web application programming. I understand that Python has built-in tools to assist. What would be the best way to learn about these outside of RTFM? I have searched on StackOverflow and found the Kent Beck's and David Astels book on the subject. I have also bookmarked the Wikipedia article as it has many of these types of resources. Are there any particular ones you would recommend for this language/application?

• GenerateBootstrapper fails to create a working setup.exe

  I’m seeing some odd behaviour I can’t explain. I'm using wix to generate a msi and using the msbuild GenerateBootstrapper task to handle pre-requisites. It all seems to build correctly i.e. there are no error or warnings but the generated setup.exe won’t run. It gives a nice blank error dialog and the event log gives about the same information. The kicker is that if I drop to the command line and run msbuild manually on the project and specify the bootstrapper target it generates a correct and working setup.exe. I've used this wix article as a base and a number of questions on StackOverflow to no avail. Has anyone seen this behaviour before, better still a fix?
