  • Intel Core i7 QuadCore on HP Pavilion dv7 Overheating Issues

    I bought a brand new HP notebook: HP Pavilion dv7-6b21em BeatsAudio edition. The notebook is about 2 months old and has pretty nasty overheating problem. I mainly use it for development however i do play some games. The disturbing thing is that the computer is loud on pretty simple tasks. Here are the specs: CPU: Intel Core i7-2670QM QuadCore ( 8 threads ) @ 2.20 GHz RAM: ( 8GB ) 2x 4GB @ 1066 HDD: 1TB 7200 GPU: ATI Radeon HD 6770M 1GB Dedicated DDR OS: Windows 7 64bit Enterprise I have an external monitor runing on VGA port an 22' Samsung SyncMaster S24B300 CPU Heat Statistics Platform: rPGA 988B (Socket G2) Frequency: cca. 3000 Mhz VID: 1.1809 - 1.2059 v Revision: D2 CPUID: 0x206A7 TDP: 45.0 Wats, Lithographu: 32 nm Heat: Tj. Max: 100*C, Power 4.5 - 5.9 Wats Core #0: 63*C Load on all is about 0 to 2% Core #1: 65*C Core #2: 66*C Core #3: 67*C I opened the notebook the fan is working fine there is no dust but still right now the fan is pretty loud even tho all i have open is FireFox. When i run a game the heat jumps to whopping 90-97*C. It has not shut down due to overheating yet but the loud fan is pretty annoying considering I'm not really doing anything stressfull. Is there anything i can do to fix this is it maybe a BIOS issue ? I have all drivers updated tho to the latest. I have very few background processes running consuming bare 2GB of RAM and about 2% of CPU. I had it serviced they said there is nothing wrong with it. But i feel that a Notebook that costs 1.2k Euros cant be like this.

  • Internal drives vs USB-3 with external SSD or eSata with External SSD

    I have a need to carry VMWare Virtual Machines with me for work. These are very large files (each VM is 20GB or more) and I carry around about 40 to 50 VM's to simulate different software configurations for different client needs. Key: they won't fit on the internal hard drive of my current laptop. I currently execute the VM's from an external 7200RPM 2.5" USB-2 drive. I keep copies of the VM's on other 5400 external USB-2 drives. The VM's work from this drive, but they are slow, costing me much time and frustration. It can take upwards of 30 minutes just to make a copy of one of the VM's. They can take upwards of 10-15 minutes to fully launch and then they operate sluggishly. I am buying a new laptop (Core I7, 8GB RAM and other high-end specs). I intend to buy an SSD for the O/S volume (C:). This SSD will not be large enough to hold the VM's. I have always wanted a second internal hard drive to operate the VM's. To have two hard drives, though, I am finding that I will have to go to a 17" laptop which would be bulky/heavy. I am instead considering purchasing a 15" laptop with either an eSATA port or USB-3 ports and then purchasing two external drives. One of the drives might be an external SSD (maybe OCX brand) for operating the VM's and the other a 7400RPM 1TB hard drive for carrying around the VM's not currently in use. The question is which options would give me the biggest bang for the buck and the weight: 1) 2nd Internal SSD hard drive. This would mean buying a 17" laptop with two drive "bays". The first bay would hold an SSD drive for the C: drive. I would leave the first bay empty from the manufacture and then purchase/install an aftermarket SSD drive. This second SSD drive would have to be very large (256 GB), which would be expensive. I would still also need another external hard drive for carrying around the VM's not in use. 2) 2nd internal hard drive - 7400 RPM. Again, a 17" laptop would be required, but there are models available with on SSD drive for the C: drive and a second 7200 RPM hard drives. The second drive could probably be large enough to hold the VM's in use as well as those not in use. But would it be fast enough to drive the VM's? 3) USB-3 with External SSD. I could buy a 15" laptop with an SSD drive for the C: drive and a second hard drive for general files. I would operate the VM's from an external USB-3 SSD drive and have a third USB-3 external 7200 RPM drive for holding the VM's not in use. 4) eSATA with External SSD. Ditto, just eSATA instead of USB-3 5) USB-3 with External 7400 RPM drive. Ditto, but the drive running the VM's would be USB-3 attached 7400 RPM drives rather than SSD. 6) eSATA with External 7400 RPM drive. Dittor, but the drive running the VM's would be eSATA attached 7400 RPM drives rather than SSD. Any thoughts on this and any creative solutions?

  • Huawei b153 limit of devices

    I set up my home network all through this 3G wifi router. Problem is it only allows 5 devices to connect. That's not much especially if a wifi printer and gaming consoles keep hogging these slots. On the other hand I don't see the point on blocking these devices. They are (should) not doing anything online just intern in my network. The documentation I can find is surpirisingly unhelpful and focuses how to plug the device in a power socket. So what would be my options. Notes: I have already been able to get a shell on the device using ssh. It's running some Busybox. But I fail to find the how and where this limit is enforced/created. Notes 2: Specifically my device is a 3WebCube - unfortunately not specifically marked with the Huawei Model number.     I've just recently moved across town. Previously, I had Dynamic DNS set up so I could remotely connect to my desktop (primarily to use TightVNC). My ISP was Comcast and I'm in the Denver, Colorado area. Currently, I'm still with Comcast and still in Denver. My router connects to the internet just fine and my Dynamic DNS record over at DynDNS did get updated with my router's current external IP address. So my router, DynDNS, and public DNS records all agree what my IP address is. However, I can't actually connect to anything from the outside world. That device seems to not respond to PING but does forward it along when I'm going outwards. But it looks like it eats it when the request is coming in. It's hard to prove that from these logs but I'm assuming that's the case because my router used to accept connections from the outside and I haven't changed anything on it.

  • Why does my dd backup of MacBook OS X fail to boot upon restore?

    I created a backup of a MacBook hard drive (WD2500BEVS-88US) by hooking it up as a secondary drive on my linux system (Ubuntu 10.10). I used the following command: sudo dd if=/dev/sdc of=/home/backup.img bs=2M This appears to have completed with no errors. I noticed that the file is only 68 GB in size even though the drive is 250 GB in capacity. I restored the image to a spare drive (WD2500BEVS) with the following command: sudo dd if=/home/backup.img of=/dev/sdb bs=2M When I boot the spare drive in the Mac, it appears to start up for a few seconds and then shuts down. (It does not appear to load into the OS at all).   • Dual monitors though 1 HDMI port

    I currently have a Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop connected to a 24" HP monitor (w2448hc). Im thinking on getting a second one, however am wondering what i need for the setup (hardware wise). Also I was wondering it there is any down side to it, or something i should be aware of. For example, image quality loss, GPU overloading, or anything important I should know. More than anything Im interested in your advice. Also the monitors do have built in speakers (HDMI sound output), is the sound going to be reproduced by only one monitor or both?   • How can I print a batch of files with custom printer settings?

    I have a collection of A3-size (tabloid size) PDF drawings which I would like to print as a batch. The particular printer I am using doesn't automatically check the paper size of the document - it always defaults to A4 (letter) size paper unless told otherwise. I need to go into the printer settings and tell the printer to use A3 size paper. A batch printing utility like DarkStorm's Batch Print Handler would be good for this. However this particular utility doesn't support changing the paper size settings or other printer settings. How can I go about batch printing these PDFs with a particular paper size?

Everything was working fine until after a restart of the XP machine, the network stopped appearing in the "Choose a wireless network" screen. It does not show up as an available network on the Macbook as well. But when I try to create a new network it shows me the network name. Creating a new network does not work either.

  • Installing drivers for switchable graphics

    I recently bought a laptop that came with Windows 7 64-bit installed. I have some older (16-bit and 32-bit) software that doesn't work with 64-bit Windows, but works just fine with 32-bit. Since I also wanted to get rid of all of the pre-installed spam, I decided to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 32-bit. I can't get the graphics cards working. This laptop uses switchable graphics, an Intel card and a Radeon card. I first tried installing this driver from Intel, which works for the Intel card. Of course, the Radeon card doesn't work with this driver and I need it for some of the newer games I have. I also tried this driver. Windows's device manager will recognize the Radeon card, but it will still use the Intel card. Also, even though that package says it contains the Intel driver, the Intel card still isn't properly recognized by Windows (leaving me with a nasty 800x600 resolution). On top of that, the Catalyst Control Center won't open (saying "The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter") I tried installing HP's driver then installing Intel's driver on top of it. Device manager will then recognize both graphics cards properly. However, the laptop still uses the Intel card. The CCC still won't start (saying the same thing as before) and I can't find any of 'switching' graphics cards. Before formatting, I could right-click the desktop and click "Configure Switchable Graphics" This option hasn't been in the context menu regardless of what driver(s) I've installed. After some research, I found out that this menu entry runs the command "cli.exe Start PowerXpressHybrid" I've tried manually running this command, but I get the same unsupported message from CCC. So, does anyone know how I can get this working? I would like to be able to switch between the Intel and Radeon. But, if there's some way to disable the Intel and use only the Radeon, that would be fine I dual-boot with Linux (framebuffer uses the Intel, haven't even tried getting X set up yet) Here's the output of lspci # lspci -v | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc NI Seymour [AMD Radeon HD 6470M] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) The laptop is a HP Pavilion g6t-1d00. HP doesn't support installing anything but Windows 7 64-bit, so calling tech support isn't an option. Thanks for any help UPDATE: I finally got it working. After a fresh install of Windows 7, I installed the HP driver (the one linked above). Then, there's an optional Windows update I installed (don't remember the exact name, but it'll stick out).   • windows rename command to rename file.a.b to file.b

    I have a few folders with hundreds of html files. The file name should have been .htm but it is .asp.htm and it does not run. It is plain html file and there is no asp code. So, I tried to rename the files using rename command. I tried like this rename *.asp.htm *.htm But it does not work. After trying a few other combinations I believe rename or ren command can't change the double dot extension. The only change the last extension. So, if I try rename *.asp.htm *.asp.htm I thought nothing would be changed, but, the file name changes from file.asp.htm to file.asp.asp.htm I hope someone would help me with this. Another thing is, can I force apache to run files with .asp.htm extension? Currently it can't run those files. Thanks in advance.

  • Install Ubuntu on a new netbook?

    I'm planning to buy a netbook, and I am considering to install Ubuntu on it. It would mainly be used by my wife at home for web browsing and email at home (lightweight is important, hence a netbook!), and we'd occasionally bring it along on travels (mostly as digital photo dropzone). I want to use Ubuntu instead of Windows because I'm sick of all the Windows hassle and updates. I'm not concerned about Windows applications; I'd switch to native alternatives as far as possible because really only Firefox and something like Picasa are needed. I'm considering an ASUS Eee PC 1001P or an MSI Wind U100 or an Point of View Mobii II (click the links for specs; nevermind that the rest is German). I'm not in the USA. Whatever I buy will most likely have Windows 7 on it but no optical drive. I would also buy a large-ish USB stick but not an external optical drive. Should I (and can I) install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, or remove Windows? If I remove Windows first, how would I be able to reinstall it if I change my mind? Can I make a backup? Is a recovery CD usually provided? Should I choose the regular Ubuntu, or the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR)? Does UNR allow me to install additional applications just as easily? Note: I'm asking about Ubuntu vs. Windows; let's skip the hardware discussion for now. Edit: I'm assuming that Windows is already installed; if it isn't then I would only install Ubuntu and this question is irrelevant.

  • Real VNC won't connect to OS X Leopard VNC server

    I have 3 machines. 2 Macs, 1 Dell. 1 of the Macs is running as a VNC server and the other Mac connects great with Chicken of the VNC. Sadly, this app does not exist for Windows so I'm using RealVNC to view from Windows. I connect the exact same way as with the Mac, but on Windows when it connects, I see a program pop up and then immediately close. I have tried all options available on RealVNC and nothing changes things. Anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?

  • My computer loses network connectivity every 30 minutes

    My LAN connected PC loses network connectivity every 30 minutes. It has a static IP address and I've checked to make sure there aren't any IP conflicts on my network. If I'm streaming from that PC to my Xbox the stream will be interrupted and it normally takes about a minute to come back online. The same happens if I'm actually on the PC and just browsing the web. I'm looking for suggestions on how to track down this issue. I've tried checking the available logs on my router to see if there is an issue with DCHP but have been unsuccessful in finding any evidence. Any suggestions would be helpful. I can't think of any recent changes to my network, PC or software installations that may have caused this. I am a software developer and have intermediate networking knowledge. EDIT: During one outage I told windows to troubleshoot the network problem and it said that it could automatically fix the problem by changing DCHP info. It basically said my network adapter from static to automatically obtain. This did fix the issue quicker than just waiting it out, but the outage occurred again 30 minutes later even when leaving those settings.
