• Map the 'Domain Admins' group into the local Ubuntu 'admin' group

  I have configured an Ubuntu 10.04 box to connect to our domain (Windows 2003 R2) using Likewise-Open. All the users can authenticate as expected. However, the domain administrators do not have administrative privileges to the machine. After working at this for a few hours, I've determined what I think may be a solution: if I map the 'Domain Admins' group from the Active Directory into the local 'admin' group, the users should get the appropriate permissions. But I have no idea how to do that. Does this even sound like the correct approach? A similar question was asked on StackOverflow and then migrated here. But it was never answered as it was recommended to be asked here instead. Thanks in advance!

• new ubuntu server installation - java server not receiving packets

  I have developed a Java server which listens for UDP packets which come from mobile devices. At the moment, it works correctly if I run my Server on my windows PC. I can receive and respond to the UDP packets sent from my phone (over 3g, not wifi). However, I am trying to run the Server on a different computer which I found lying around my house. I have basically done a clean install of Ubuntu Server edition, updated it, installed the java run time environment and configured port forwarding to allow connections on the appropriate port. I have also tried to disable the firewall. The problem is, it doesn't appear as if the server is receiving any packets and I've exhausted my brain thinking on how to solve/debug the problem. Can anyone suggest to me what the problem might be? or more likely something I can do to help me find out more information about what is going wrong.

  I've got OSX Server running on a macbook, and I'm looking to run an ubuntu server VM on it via Parallels. I'm thinking about hosting all my apache inside linux, and possibly some other services. I'm curious what a viable config would be, having not done this before. I need to do bridged network right? How do I direct web traffic to the VM instead of OSX? Haven't got my head wrapped around how this works yet so any help would be appreciated.

• Ubuntu server: lost prompt on monitor

  Hello All, I am running Ubuntu 9.04 server edition. I have a monitor plugged into the box for occasional admin tasks. I pulled out a USB disk (without unmounting) and the screen is now full with this message: Buffer I/O error on device sdc1, logical block 7778778 I can't seem to clear the screen or get a prompt back. Doesn't appear to be registering keyboard strokes. The box is still running fine (I can ssh in from elsewhere and evrything is running as normal). Any ideas on how to clear screen and get my prompt back?

  I have a laptop with ubuntu 9.10 which fails to start, and I want to copy the data from it to an external hard disk. I can login in recovery mode command line, but then I cannot mount the external hard drive. (in recovery mode I cannot write to the laptops hard drive) If I boot from an portable USB with mintlinux, I can mount the external harddrive, and copy most of the data from the laptop, however there is a dir which I have no rights to access under /home/user/Documents then I get a permission denied error. Are there any other options?

• No virtual console on ubuntu 12.10

  When I try to do a ctr-alt f(1-6) in ubuntu 12.10 I only get a black screen with a blinking cursor but no login prompt. Any ideas on what could be wrong?   Hello, I'd like to setup a fresh root server and install a linux based virtualization on it. My thoughts are on: Intel VTs Hardware Ubuntu 9.10 KVM based virt. The access to the root server will only be SSH for Administration. Has anybody done this before, what was your glues discovered in the daily use? My requirements are: very secure, so the root server only has ssh to the dom-0 and minimalistic ports for the guest (e.g. http/s). good monitoring of host/guest (my idea is to using zabbix for it) easy and fast administration (how are the command line tools working for you? cryptiv? high learning curve?) • How do I clone an Ubuntu server under VMWare

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server running under VMWare. As best as I can tell, the VMWare vmbk file has been corrupted. The server is operating normally, but this is preventing backups (using Veeam). To remedy this, I'd like to create a duplicate VM without the corruption issue. However, with the corrupted file VMWare can't help me, eg. create a simple clone. I can create a new VM. How do I clone the configuration / data from my problematic server into the new one? Updated: just to clarify: I realise I can't use the VMWare clone tools. I will manually create a new VM (with a base O/S if necessary). How to I replicate the O/S and data from one VM into another?

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 version, with Nvidia 9800 GT, installed 270.41.06 Nvidia drivers following this guide. I have a LG42LH30FR LCD TV connected with the dvi link - RGB PC input I'm able to get 1024x768 resolution without overscan (I can get 1080i = 1366x768 but there is a lot of hidden screen space to the right and I don't know what to do about it). I want to get full HD I can get full HD (1080p = 1920x1080) on Windows XP 64-bit with custom resolution created with Nvidia Control Panel, from reading over xorg.conf configurations it seems I need to add a certain modeling to the monitor configuration, but I don't know where to get the appropriate options for this task any suggestions?

• Setting a wireless access point on Ubuntu server 11.10

  I am trying to setup a wifi access point with my Ubuntu server. I have managed to get my phone to connect the wireless and now it get a DHCP lease. Though it still cannot ping out or get pinged by anything on my network. I am prety sure my problem is iptables, but I not sure what would be wrong. Here is what my rules look like. (The ones pertaining to the bridge interface) # Allow traffic to / from wireless bridge interface iptables -A INPUT -i br0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -o br0 -j ACCEPT I am guessing my rules are a little lean, the bridge exists on the same subnet as everything else on my network, I am using a 10.0.0.0/24 subnet. EDIT Oh yeah I should mention also, when I do a ping test, I get Destination Host Unreachable as the error.

After that it shows critical status. I know my command is not correct but cannot detect the problem. I learned that in this plug-in user-name and password of the host router are required but don't know how and where to provide it. Nagios log does not show any error message.   Hi I have a script that needs to extract certain information form the /proc/net/ip_conntrack file once in a while. I do not wish to run this script as the root user. Default permissions for the file is: $ ls -lah /proc/net/ip_conntrack -r--r----- 1 root root 0 2010-03-28 12:18 /proc/net/ip_conntrack I can change it with: sudo chmod o+r /proc/net/ip_conntrack But that does not stick after a reboot. Is there some configuration file for file-permissions in the /proc directory in Ubuntu Server 9.10? Or do I just have to stick a chmod line in some startup script?

• Font size of emacs in ubuntu

  I use emacs in ubuntu and I use Monaco 10 as its default font. However, the font rendering seems a bit odd compared to my gnome terminal with the same font size: It's a bit smaller and not as clear as that in the terminal. I've tried to avoid simply this with size 11 but it's too large for me. How can I make it the same as its look in the terminal ? Any help is appreciated :) UPDATE: I should tell you the above on is GUI emacs running a shell, and the below is the gnome terminal. On the right are their correspond font settings. • Cannot enable cron logs on Ubuntu 10.04

  I've just the following commands on Ubuntu 10.04 in order to enable cron logs. But I still don't see the file /var/logs/cron. 1. Edit /etc/syslog.conf and uncomment the line starting with cron.* 2. sudo /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart 3. sudo /etc/init.d/cron restart (I've also tried sudo service cron restart). What am i missing to do ? Also, I would like to know how can I run cron manually and not just start the service. thanks

• Mount encrypted hfs in ubuntu

  I try to mount an encrypted hfs+ partition in ubuntu. An older post described quite good how to do it, but lacks the information how to use encrypted partitions. What I found so far is: # install required packages sudo apt-get install hfsprogs hfsutils hfsplus loop-aes-utils # try to mount it mount -t hfsplus -o encryption=aes-256 /dev/xyz /mount/xyz But once I run this I get the following error: Error: Password must be at least 20 characters. So I tried to type it in twice, but that results in this: ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument, requested cipher or key (256 bits) not supported by kernel Any suggestions? Thx Edit: One thing I'm not sure about is whether I use the right password. My assumption is that it is my default one for these situations. But I'm not sure whether Max OSX choose another password (internally) for that.

• Ubuntu Chromium bookmark icons blank

  Ever so often I load Chromium and it refuses to load my profile. Now that doesn't happen any more but since then it refuses to load the icons for my bookmarks which, if you look at the attached pic, is my only way of identifying which icons do what (other than hover for tool-tip, or actually pressing the icon button). The other possible variable is that the bookmarks are meant to sync with Google sync - I'm not sure if that is a factor. How do I restore the icons to my bookmark bar?   I'm having issues with one of my servers taking a long time to look up host names. This is an Ubuntu 12.04 box, so I've tried following the new resolvconf directives. In my /etc/network/interfaces file, I defined my name servers like this: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address someaddress netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 198.58.103.1 dns-nameservers 74.14.179.5 72.14.188.5 In my /etc/resolv.conf, I see these name servers, like this: # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN nameserver 74.14.179.5 nameserver 72.14.188.5 On another box, I edited the resolv.conf directly as directed by my hosts' setup help files. It looks like this: domain members.linode.com search members.linode.com nameserver 72.14.179.5 nameserver 72.14.188.5 options rotate This second box has no issues with host name look ups and responds quite quickly. Could not having the domain and search directives make my look ups slow? By slow, I mean it's taking anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds to find the IP address of a host.

  Hello, To the point. I have Ubuntu Maverick running on my Lenovo G450. Before, it was Windows 7. All my data are inside another partition, its NTFS. FSTAB line to mount that partition : /dev/sda5 /data ntfs auto,users,uid=1000,gid=1000,utf8,dmask=027,fmask=137 0 0 Inside /data there are folder Musics, Graphics, Tools, Cores, etc. If I'm about to create new folder, let see, GFX on /home/apronouva/GFX and make it link or pointing to /data/Graphics, how do I do that ? So when I open /home/apronouva/GFX the content will be the same as inside /data/Graphics .. and whatever changes I made inside GFX, it will also affect /data/Graphics I tried : $ ln -s /data/Graphics /home/apronouva/GFX it resulted : error, cannot make symbolic link between folder Thanks in advance, Fath

• Ubuntu server loses network connection after ADSL2+ modem reset

  I am using an ubuntu 10.04 server (running on a Lenovo Thinkpad notebook) as my webserver. It is performing well in terms of handling the traffic etc. However my internet connection is ADSL2+ (using Thomson TG782T modem-router) and if the modem is reset, then my server loses network connection. The networkmanager icon shows a red exclamation mark showing that is has no connection. But as soon as I click on it and tell it to connect to eth0, the connection is back on. It must be something that networkmanager is failing to do and because of this, the reliability of my webserver is suffering. Any advice on how this can be fixed?

• How to set default permissions for automounted FAT drives in Ubuntu

  I've got many FAT32 drives that I'd like to mount in Ubuntu such that they have permission mode 700 for directories and 600 for all other files. By default, they have 755 for all files, which is not particularly useful since almost no non-directories should be executable, and it screws up version control repos hosted on the drives. "Back in the day" I would have had the drives listed in /etc/fstab with the umask/dmask I want and there was no such thing as a default. These days, drives automount under their volume names. Which is great, except now I have no idea how to set the default. I have tried changing the /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options gconf key with no apparently effect. It was 077 initially but the mounted drive reflected a default of 022; changing it and re-inserting the drives resulted in the files still having permission bits of 755.

• Ubuntu 10.04 User Interface errors

  Hi Guys Using Ubuntu 10.04 Beta on a Sony Vaio laptop (slightly old PCG-4n7M). It was working wonderfully until this morning. After updating and upgrading the login screen images gave broken image icons, then on logging in UI was replaced with just the cmd shell. All menus are gone. I have tried to reconfigure xserver-xorg and that doesn't work. Reinstalling doesn't either. I have tried a number of other attempts. What is weird is that I can launch graphical applications from the cmd line. such as firefox or google-chrome. and they work but the UI is simplified or broken (no resizing, closing, minimizing). I am a bit lost on how to fix this error. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know

Basic requirements would be: system package management and update (individual selection for each managed node) configuration of basic system services (Users, NFS, cron, ideally also Apache) monitoring (charting of system resources, disk, io, memory, etc) and alerting, ideally a default configuration with sensible values for alerts

  I recently upgraded from the previous LTS Ubuntu to Precise and now mysql refuses to start. I'm just getting no where with this issue right now, after looking at google results for 2 hours.
