  I have noticed that OpenSUSE informs me of patches for security holes and race conditions and things much more frequently than, say, Ubuntu. Now then, does this mean that: [A] OpenSUSE has more holes that need to be fixed in the first place or... [B] The OpenSUSE gang are more active at finding / squashing bugs. What do you think?

• iChat or Gtalk won't connect to AIM. How can I fix this?

  I can sign onto AIM.com and I know my account is active because I can sign in on my iPhone or AIM express. I can't however log in using any 3rd part applications. I've tried logging in using Adium, iChat, and Gmail Chat (Gchat) I have tried to change my port to "443" and changed the server name to something different. This is so weird. Any suggestions??

• Using an SSD with no AHCI [ICH7 base] - Windows 7 hangs frequently

  I have a Shuttle Intel G31 + ICH7 (base -- not M/R etc) system. I just bought an OCZ Vertex 3 120gb [VTX3-25SAT3-120G] which includes the Sandforce 2218 firmware. The ICH7 does not support AHCI. I understand that this can be a problem. What I don't understand, is if it's necessary to have the proper performance of this drive. I know that without AHCI I may get a limited read/write speed -- this is fine. What my concern is, is the constant freezing/hangs I'm getting with Windows 7 on any disk activity. The 'Highest Active Time' flip-flops from 0 to 100% every minute or so regardless of large or small files. EDIT: The threads/processes with the highest response time is the kernel. I've been reading about other people with Shuttle SG31G2s, and they seem to be using SSDs no problem. Is this the controller's fault? The fact that I do not have AHCI enabled? It makes sense to me that if this SSD requires AHCI features that it would cause Windows to hang, but I would like to fully determine my situation before returning things/reformatting. To initially have my drive recognise the SSD at all, I had to change the BIOS option to Force Gen II instead of Auto for the SATA controller. I then installed Windows with no problem. There were no errors in the event log related to disk usage, but watching the perfmon I could see the highest active time and the processes (usually pagefile.sys being written to, or chrome/firefox caching) which was correlated to the hanging. So now what I need answered is: should I be returning this SSD and getting one with a different controller, or returning the SSD all-together as it will never work out and I will continue to get these hangs. • Alternatives to Windows-builtin checkdisk utility for NTFS?

  For some reason Windows 7's checkdisk freezes and doesn't move its progress bar forward for over an hour, while the disk is still supposedly active. Now it's possible that if I left it overnight it would finally figure out how to progress, but are there any other programs with similar functionality I could use instead?

• Can't get Monit to work

  I am trying to configure Monit on my local machine to get a taste at how it works, but I have some issues. What I am trying to do is to get any evidence that Monit is up and running correctly and is actually monitoring something. So my /etc/monit/monitrc looks like set daemon 60 set logfile /var/log/monit.log set idfile /var/lib/monit/id set statefile /var/lib/monit/state set eventqueue basedir /var/lib/monit/events slots 100 set httpd port 2812 and allow username:password check process apache2 with pidfile /usr/local/apache/logs/apache2.pid start program = "/etc/init.d/apache2 start" stop program = "/etc/init.d/apache2 stop" if failed port 6543 protocol http then exec "/usr/bin/touch /tmp/monit" If I understand correctly, since apache does not listen on port 6543 (it is just a random number) I should get an error, and as a consequence the file /tmp/monit should be created. So I start monit by sudo service monit start sudo monit monitor apache2 Unfortunately no such file is created. Instead the web console shows an error for apache - execution failed. The log says 'apache2' failed to start. What am I doing wrong? EDIT As suggested in the comments, I ran monit in verbose mode, by monit -vv monitor apache2 (the exact command suggested in the comments failed). • Eyefinity resolution on third monitor

  I'm now using three monitors with resolution capability of 1920x1080. The one monitor connected to Active Display Port is (from some reason) limited to 1440x900.   I am trying to activate the CDN tools plugin and I keep getting the following error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /srv/www/www.triathleteskitchen.com/wp-content/plugins/cdn-tools/cdn_classes/cloudfiles/cloudfiles_http.php on line 252 After extensive research on this issue in which I updated both of the following settings: max_execution_time = 300 memory_limit = 128M and verified the settings are active by setting up a dump phpinfo() page. • Prevent important OS X process being swapped out, without code change?

  I want hotkey-based utilities like Quicksilver or Zooom to respond immediately. But if they have been idle for a while, they (I guess) get swapped out, and respond slowly, sometimes not even responding to the first few keystrokes I wanted to send to them. How can I encourage such processes (i.e. chosen processes, not all processes system wide) to remain in active memory? Or, am I misunderstanding the problem?

• Capturing multicast data with Wireshark with IGMP Snooping Enabled at the switch

  I am trying to capture multicast traffic via Wireshark (actually TShark), however the switch has IGMP snooping enabled and will only send Multicast traffic on the ports that have an active IGMP subscription. I am currently getting around this by having a separate application hold the groups open I wish to record, but I am trying to set up a system to start/stop recording data dynamically and this extra complexity is painful. Is there a way to force Wireshark to send out IGMP Subscriptions for multicast groups it is recording?

• Windows 2003 Dynamic Disk error

  Hi, I was trying to ghost a partition on a Windows 2003 server, using Ghost 2003. Unfortunately things went horribly wrong, and now I can't boot back into my system. As you can see, Ghost creates a wee little partition to do its dirty work, and has dislodged my other partitions. Partition 2 in the image below is my C drive. • Log and Block Website using Windows 2008 SBS

  A client has asked me to setup Windows 2008 SBS to block and log websites from a list they will provide. As far as I know they only have standard edition which means I cannot use ISA. I was thinking of using squid authenticated against Active Directory. There is no budge for additional software. • When and why would Windows Explorer lock an external hard disk?

  I am quite surprised to see that Windows Explorer is locking my external hard disk. Is there any reason why explorer.exe is holding on to my external hard disk? Before I was trying to detach the external hard disk, I was opening a csproj file using Visual Studio 2008. I made sure that I closed down Visual Studio before trying to detach the external hard disk. There was no other active program except Google Chrome, from what I could see, that was running.

  Windows 7 has a neat feature where the Windows Key in conjunction with the arrow keys tiles the active window. Windows key + left arrow moves it to the left half, windows key + right arrow moves your window to the right half of your monitor. Is there an equivalent to this functionality in OS X? Can anyone suggest some alternative metaphors by which to manage my windows? I find that OSX windows tend to be a bit more scatterbrained than their windows counterparts.

  I have MSMQ installed on two Windows XP computers. Can I configure them to pass messages back and forth, or do I need an MSMQ server in the middle? If I need an MSMQ server, does the normal MSMQ with Win2003 able to act as that? And then, how do I connect my Windows XP to that Windows 2003 server? • gvim Cannot make changes, 'modifiable' is off issues with file explorer.

  In gvim using netrw(the file explorer), I usually middle click a file to open it in the last active window. This just leads to an error stating "Cannot make changes, 'modifiable' is off". Another middle click, and the file opens fine where I expect it to. All buffers are saved, there's no uncommuted changes anywhere. What causes this, and what can I do about it ? • IPvsadm not equally balancing on wlc scheduler

  For some reason, ipvsadm does not seem to be equally balancing the connections between my real servers when using the wlc or lc schedulers. One real server gets absolutely hammered with requests while the others receive relatively few connections. • Project Honey Pot - mod_httbl

  I'm very interested in project honey pot. It seems like a smart way of blocking harversters etc from your web server. I found out about mod_httpbl for apache but I haven't find much to read about it other than on project honey pot's homepage. Doesn't seem like a very active project(?) Could someone with exeperience of httpbl tell me if mod_httpbl is good/bad or if there are other better alternatives?
