• Hardening Word and Reader against exploits

  I have recently heard a lot about exploits for PDF and DOC files on Windows, which when opened in Reader or Word would infect the computer. I'm assuming most of those exploits rely on some kind of active content, I've heard that Reader allows JavaScript for example. I already have antivirus, but I've heard they often don't catch those types of exploits, so I want to try a little proactive defense. Is there a way to harden Reader and Word by disabling plugins or options that are often used by exploits?

• Directly printing to remote CUPS/IPP server on Snow Leopard

  I need to use Kerberos authentication when printing from my OSX machine, however, the machine itself does not have a service account in active directory, so the KDC will not issue a delegation ticket for the local CUPS installation. I think printing could work if the printing framework would directly print to the network CUPS server (or even to the Windows print server), bypassing the local CUPS. Is it possible to setup printing so that it directly accesses the remote print server? (asking for a service ticket for that server would succeed)

• Cancelled a format using diskpart at 0%. Can I get the data back?

  I wanted to format my USB thumbdrive, but incorrectly did the following on my external HDD!! CMD -- Diskpart select disk 2 clean create partition primary select partition 1 active format fs=fat32 While it was still at 0% however, I cancelled the format and quit from CMD. I can no longer see the HDD in My computer though, and it shows up as below in diskpart Disk 1 Status - Online Size- 1800 GB Free - 0B Is there anything I can do to get the data and HDD back?

• Postfix issues sending mail to addresses under domain located on server

  I recently installed virtualmin on my nice shiny new rackspace cloud. Everything went seemlessly but I've been having some issues getting emails to send properly. The problem seems to be that the server can not send mail to email addresses where the domain is owned by my server. For example, on my server I run multiple virtual domains, lets call this one test.com.   I have an issue with the ACL configuration of an LDAP server (slapd). The following ACL entry is active as the first rule that applies: {0}to dn.subtree="ou=some,ou=where,ou=beneath,dc=the,dc=rain,dc=bow" attrs=entry,children by users write Now the strange thing that happens is that given that rule I can add an entry to the respective DN but if I want to modify it with the very same user, then I get 0x32 (LDAP_INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS) Can someone give me a hint what the problem could be?

  I am looking to release and renew my IP address in OS X 10.4 using Terminal. Essentially, I need the OS X equivalent of Windows: C:\ ipconfig /release C:\ ipconfig /renew However, I need the interface to remain active during this process, so using ifconfig down/up will not work. I believe I can clear the IP with ifconfig delete but I'm not sure how to get the dhcp client to reassign the address. An article from 2002 suggests using set dhcp but Apple's ifconfig man page does not include this information.

  I'm trying to measure would it be better to have prefork or worker mpm apache module for the server I'm working on, which is Amazon X-Large 15 GB memory 8 EC2 Compute Units (4 virtual cores with 2 EC2 Compute Units each) and that will run a Magento website with about 50 active users at once. Site serves a lot of images and about 45 requests per page. Images sometimes hang, so it seems worker would be a better option? Thanks

  Normally we create service accounts in Active Directory, and if we install things like SQL Server, etc, we set the software services we set them to use those service accounts. The service accounts don't have the ability to be used to log into a workstation interactively. For Proof of concepts, we're installing SQL Server and other software on Virtual windows 7 workstations that aren't part of a domain, so we are creating local accounts that will be used by windows services. Is it possible to stop those users from appearing as options on the login screen?

• Is it safe to run two instances of svnserve on one repository, or only one?

What I want to know is: is it safe to run svnserve on both nodes all the time, or should it only run on the active node? Does svnserve use file-level locking, or is it all in memory?
