• How can I leave the remote screen locked when I ARD/VNC/etc. to my Mac?

  I'm currently using Jolly's Fast VNC and Mac OS X's built-in VNC server (System Preferences, Sharing, Screen Sharing) to access my iMac remotely. Here's my problem: When I'm using the iMac remotely, the screensaver deactivates and the screen is unlocked. If someone had physical access to my iMac they could walk up to it and start using it. Is there some way I can set things up so that when I'm using my iMac remotely the screen stays locked, like Windows XP Professional does when you're using RDP? I know I can use X remotely with the iMac locked, but I would like to use Mac applications remotely, too.

  Why would the boot screen be displayed on the external monitor? This is not really a problem, I'd just like to know the reason behind this. If I boot without an external monitor both the BIOS settings and the boot screen are displayed on the built-in LCD monitor. However, when I boot with a monitor attached, the boot screen and the BIOS settings are displayed on the external monitor. There isn't any setting available regarding this in the BIOS setup (as opposed to my Thinkpad T42 where there is an option regarding this). • Windows 2008 IIS 7 PHP Caching / Blank Page Problems?

  I don't even know how to explain this. The only thing I can think is 'why am I working with a windows server?' I am renting a dedicated 1and1 server - I installed PHP myself - with fast CGI and caching (pretty sure I checked OK on something about dynamic caching for PHP when I installed it.) Every few hours of intensive php processing - my pages start locking up - usually just showing blank pages - with no errors whatsoever. Just now, I checked a page - let's call it a.php - and it was showing the results of b.php - I thought I had been hacked! Simply restarting the IIS server however, fixes the problem. Any ideas / help / knowledge on similar problems with windows 2008?

• Is there an application that can do a blue screen effect with a webcam?

  Background: This is not the blue screen of death I am speaking of but the process called "Blue Screening" that takes and removes a particular colored background from an image so that it can be superimposed on some other video/still picture. If you have ever seen the weatherman stand in front of the map, then you have seen someone doing a blue screen technique. I would like to be able to capture video from my webcam, then send that video to a blue screen program which removes the white (or other color) from the background and then inserts a background of my own choosing. (think of the dead guy in freejack who was calling from all of the different places on earth) Then once the image is superimposed, I would like to pipe it into Skype for video conferencing. Anyone have a good way to do this?

  Hi, I'm working with RDP sessions quite frequently. As we work in teams and all use the same user account on a particular computer (I know...) I was wondering if there was a way to display from which computer (hostname, computername) the person is connecting. The login screen I get when two users are already connected looks like this (german): I'd love it, if the screen would display from where the logged in user is connecting e.g. "COMPUTER\user connected from MYCOMPUTERNAME". This way I would know whom to ask to disconnect so I can hop onto the session. If I remember correctly the login screen looked different for previous Windows versions including this connection information. Any way I can easily enable this or is this just standard windows behavior and there is no way to tell from where the user is connecting (btw: Task Manager shows the computername of the connected user).

• Is there a way to snip part of the screen with a hotkey?

  I'm able to launch the snipping tool, select an option and then copy based on my selection. Is there a way to launch a default snipping option so that I can create partial screen screenshots without using a third-party tool? Essentially, I'm looking for winkey+S without having to use OneNote. Both OneNote and SnagIt implement this perfectly. If OneNote is running, pressing winkey+S allows me to click and drag any portion of the screen, including pop-out menus with selections that are active. SnagIt does almost the exact same thing, invoked by the prt screen key.

I've tried turning off all my addons and tried running Firefox in safe mode, but the problem was not solved. I'm guessing that I've messed up my configuration somehow and Firefox now tries to render XML files as HTML ones. I've tried googling, but with no success. Help, please? • How to disable the Windows 8 lock screen, without disabling the password?

  Windows 8 now has a slide-away lock screen like so many other OSes designed for a touch interface. However on a non-touch PC/laptop this is just an extra annoying step in logging in. There is an option to disable it, but this also turns off the password requirement. Is there a way to disable the lock screen, and have Windows wake up directly to the password entry screen? Often when pressing a key to hide it there will be a noticeable delay before password entry is accepted, and no indicator, so one can easily lose the first character or so that they attempt to type, thus failing the login attempt.

• Win 7: How can I resize a window to make it much bigger than my screen?

  I have a window that I'd like to make much bigger than my physical screen (explanation of why below). I hit Alt+Space, M, and then press the Up arrow to move the title bar above the physical top of my screen. However, when I press Enter to set it, the title bar snaps back to the top of my screen. How can I prevent this from happening? Background: I want to get a hi-res image of a neighborhood map so that it can be printed to a poster. Google Earth has a "Save as JPG" feature, which will save the map in the window to a file. The bigger the window, the bigger the JPG; so, I'm trying to make the window as big as I can. Alternate suggestions welcome.

• How do I prevent users from entering a blank value in an Excel sheet?

  I want to restrict users to entering either just 0 or 1 in an Excel 2007 sheet. I use the Data Data Validation dialog to do this, but I'm finding that it doesn't stop them from entering blanks. What I would like is for there to be a prompt when they enter blanks, just like the one that appears when they enter any other non-blank data that is not 0 or 1. I plan to fill the sheet with 0s before applying the validation, so there should not be a problem with erroneous data. Also, I'm open to using VBA to fix this problem.

• When to use new layouts and when to use new activities?

  I'm making a game in Android and I'm trying to add a set of menu screens. Each screen takes up the whole display and has various transitions available to other screens. As a rough summary, the menu screens are: Start screen Difficult select screen Game screen. Pause screen. Game over screen. And there are several different ways you can transition between screen: 1 - 2 2 - 3 3 - 4 (pause game) 4 - 1 (exit game) 4 - 3 (resume game) 3 - 5 (game ends) Obviously, I need some stored state when moving between screens, such as the difficulty level select when starting a game and what the player's score is when the game over screen is shown. Can anyone give me some advice for the easiest way to implement the above screens and transitions in Android? All the create/destroy/pause/resume methods make me nervous about writing brittle code if I'm not careful. I'm not fond of using an Activity for each screen. It seems too heavy weight, having to pass data around using intents seems like a real pain and each screen isn't a useful module by itself. As the "back" button doesn't always go back to the previous screen either, my menu layout doesn't seem to fit the activity model well. At the moment, I'm representing each screen as an XML layout file and I have one activity. I set the different buttons on each layout to call setContentView to update the screen the main activity is showing (e.g. the pause button changes the layout to the pause screen). The activity holds onto all the state needed (e.g. the current difficulty level and the game high score), which makes it easy to share data between screens. This seems roughly similar to the LunarLander sample, except I'm using multiple screens. Does what I have at the moment sound OK or am I not doing things the typical Android way? Is there a class I can use (e.g. something like ViewFlipper) that could make my life easier? By the way, my game screen is implemented as a SurfaceView that stores the game state. I need the state in this view to persist between calls to setContentView (e.g. to resume from paused). Is the right idea to create the game view when the activity starts, keep a reference to it and then use this reference with setContentView whenever I want the game screen to appear?

• Windows 7 boots with a blank screen with mouse cursor only.

  My Windows 7 machine was powered down without logging out first. Now when booting the PC, Windows 7 does not completely start--instead it boots to an all-black screen with a mouse cursor that can be moved around. There are no icons, toolbars, etc. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not bring up the Task Manager. Booting to Safe Mode renders the same result.

I have cycled my macbook dozens of times, it would be great to be able to boot quicker. I am single-booting Xubuntu 14.04 (no Mac OSX partitions or any other OS, just a GRUB partition at sda1, a main partition at sda2, and a swap at the end of the drive). Suggestions very appreciated.

  I am having problems with my snake game, when the snake collides with itself it draws a "game over" image in the background, but only while it's colliding with itself. I want it to behave like the pause function, so that as soon as the snake collides with itself it draws an image on the screen and stops the game play.   Possible Duplicate: Only ‘sdb’ shows up when installing 12.04 on a new Dell inspiron 14z I am new to Linux and trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a new HP Pavilion DV6TQE Ivy Bridge and being presented with the below screen which I believe is incorrect. My disk is set up as a basic disk (not dynamic) and I tried with a single C:\ partition and by creating a second partition in windows with no luck. Any ideas? UPDATE: I think I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it yet.. My hard drive has a 32gb mSSD cache which is listed as dev/sdb. for some reason this is causing the installation trouble.

  I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. • How can I set my screen resolution to match my TV?

  I have a computer in my classroom that's connected to an LG smart TV (that's actually not so smart. I wouldn't recommend buying one.). For the touch interface, the TV wants a resolution of 1920x1080 at 60Hz. However, I can't seem to set the computer to that resolution. The display settings only offer 1024x768 and 640x480. The computer dual boots with Windows XP, where widescreen options are available in approximately the required size, but the exact resolution -- or even aspect ratio-- isn't available in XP either. I tried the following command: xrandr -s 1920x1080 -r 60 The response was: Size 1920x1080 not found in available modes Back in the old days, the solution would be to edit xorg.conf. However, since that file no longer exists, and I haven't found up-to-date info, I don't know what else to do. If it helps, this machine will never be connected to a different display, so resolution flexibility isn't important.
