• Sound card problem, no audio device detected

  I bought a new sound card because my built in sound card did not function. When I open YouTube, Media Player or anything that can create a sound my computer will hang up and sometimes when I start my computer it will hang when the Windows XP sound will activate. Update: My computer has no audio. It says NO AUDIO DEVICE. I already installed Realtek AC97 and Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and I also pasted stream.dll to the Windows and system32 folders and I restarted my computer but it still says NO AUDIO DEVICE. • Iozone: sensible settings for a server with lots of RAM

  I have just acquired a server with: 2x quadcore Xeons 48G ECC RAM 5x 160GB SSDs on an LSI 9260-8i Before deploying the target platform, I'd like to collect as much benchmark data as possible, testing I/O with hardware RAID in various configurations, ZFS zRAID, as well as I/O performance on vSphere and with KVM virtualization. In order to see real disk I/O performance without cache effects, I tried running Iozone with a maximum file of more than twice the physical RAM as recommended in the documentation, so: iozone -a -g100G However, as one might expect, this takes far too long to be practicable. (I stopped the run after seven hours..) I'd like to reduce the range of record and file sizes to values that might reflect realistic performance for an application server, hopefully getting the run times to under an hour or so. Any ideas?   Ok first off I know I should have Windows 7 but i don't Its a really old computer and i'm not sure if it can run the latest OS of ubuntu but i'm trying any whay so here are my specs or what i could have gathered from the computer(viruses are every where and most of the drivers are gone) Specs OS WindowsXP(it isn't letting me know which one that is blocked) Graphics card(can't access device manger it is blocked also) graphics card is 2003-2004 era though ram 512mb last time i checked USB(Drivers Gone) Wireless Card(Drivers Gone) Lan Card(Drivers Gone) Audio(Drivers Gone) CD Drive (it runs and works but i can't check its properties that's blocked to) Computer Dell Inspiron 600m Good News I have the Driver CD for everything Bad News I Don't have the OS CD I know the Computer is trash but i want to flash it anyway and just install linux(ubuntu) The second problem is it doesn't even want to load the CD all the way it is just stuck at the Ubuntu Screen with all the bubbles orange and if i resart it just does it again. any help would be nice. EDIT: okay i tried the first comment and it said i need a firmware file from http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware the firmware is b43/ucode5.fw, b43-open/ucode5.fw is there any other way of installing this firmware without being in the Ubuntu because what I have read is I need to be in Ubuntu to do this... Thanks for all the help you are giving me i have read your comments but i don't want to wait another two hours downloading that if i can get it working on this...

• Ubuntu install can't find hard drives

  I recently got a Dell Inspiron Special Edition 7720 computer. I am trying to install Ubuntu along side Windows. When I use the WUBI installer, the installation of Ubuntu works as long as I do not boot into Windows; if I boot into Windows, when I go back into Ubuntu, I am given a variety of error messages which claim to have corrupt or missing kernel/root directory, etc. I have been working with this problem for about a week, and have reinstalled Ubuntu MANY times. So far, I have eliminated all of the following problems: Corrupt WUBI installation (Downloaded multiple times, used on other systems), I have tried using a CD and a flash drive, both of which work on other computers. I know that no program within Ubuntu is creating the problem. I know that others have successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer with my operating system (Windows 7 SP1). This is a much shortened version of the original question, which has been up for about 5 days, and included a more detailed description of the problem, but left everyone clueless as to the source of this problem. When I spoke with the Dell service technician who came over today to replace my keyboard, he suggested that the driver for my HDD was so new that it was not compatible with the current version of Ubuntu. His reasoning is as follows: 1) During an install from a flash drive or CD, where I am supposed to get the option to wipe my system or create a dual boot, I get a window that asks me to select a hard drive partition, but none are listed. 2) This model of computer was made public in June of this year, while Ubuntu was released in April Adopting this theory, it would seem to me that the WUBI install fails after booting into Windows because Ubuntu can no longer find the files that it needs to load. Does this theory seem at all plausible to anyone? I just want to install Ubuntu and have it stay on my computer. I don't care how I put it there, I just need it to work, so I would TRULY appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone could give. Thanks so much for your time and support!!!

• how can 192.168.2.10 talk to 172.18.156.65 ?

  from what i understand, all computers need to be in the same subnet /24 so how would i get a computer to be able to connect to another computer that is set as 172 ? one computer is behind a firewall, the other is connected to a HUGHES sat dish and has the IP of 172 would I need to setup a ROUTE in a firewall between the 2 computers, to say "if you are trying to get to 172.18.156.65 then use the ip address 192.168.2.65 and translate it to 172.18.156.65" the firewall is a netgear, if I should use a ROUTE, then I'll try to learn it from the manual thanks

• How can I fix the #c3284d# malvertising hack on my website?

  For the past couple of weeks at semi regular intervals, this website has had the #c3284d# malware code inserted into some of its .php files. Also the .htaccess file had its equivelant code inserted. I have, on many occasions removed the malicious code, replaced files, changed the ftp password on my ftp client (which is CoreFTP), changed the connection method to FTPS for more secure storage of the password (instead of plain text). I have also scanned my computer several times using AVG and Windows Defender which have found no malware on my computer which might have been storing my ftp passwords. I used Sucuri SiteCheck to check my website which says my website is clean of malware which is bizarre because I just attempted to click one of the links on the site a minute ago and it linked me to another one of these random stats.php sites, even though it appears I have gotten rid of the #c3284d# code again (which will no doubt be re-inserted somehow in an hour or so).. Has anyone found an actual viable solution for this malware hack? I have done just about all of the things suggested here and here and the problem still persists. Currently when I click on a link within the sites navigation menu within Google Chrome I get googles Malware warning page: Warning: Something's Not Right Here! oxsanasiberians.com contains malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site. Google has found that malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it's possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed. Why not try again tomorrow or go somewhere else? We have already notified oxsanasiberians.com that we found malware on the site. For more about the problems found on oxsanasiberians.com, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page. I'm wondering if it is possible that the Google Chrome browser I am using has itself been hacked? Does anyone else get re-directed when clicking links on the the website?

• Ubuntu 10.10 - PC shutdown before boot shortly after BIOS loads

  Hi - Since installing Ubuntu 10.10 from Karmic I've started getting problems with starting up the PC. I've done a complete wipe (Boot and Nuke) of the hard drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 but the problem still occurs. There is no dual boot on the PC, just Ubuntu. Here is the problem: Each morning, when I turn the PC on from being off overnight, the PC starts up and loads the BIOS. I get the following message : "Verifying DMI Pool Data... K8 NPT Data Change...Update New Data to DMI!....... Then poof the computer shuts off. However, after switching the computer back on around 6 or 7 times after it's turned itself off, it will eventually boot up without any problem. Also, once up and running for a while, I can shutdown and restart the PC first time, without any issues. I have also noticed a problem with the USB mouse being recognised and once I finally get the computer booted up, I need to unplug and then plug the mouse back in to get it working. I've opened the PC up and checked the connections (cables, cards and memory) and it all seems fine. The main issue with troubleshooting this problem is I cannot test any suggestions or fixes until the next morning because once the computer is up and running it will remain so! I do not leave the computer on overnight to save energy. So.. is this a hardware / boot software issue? This is a very odd problem and I have googled to no avail. Any suggestions? Many thanks Clem

  So I have a ThinkPad computer that I've installed a program called "Deep Freeze" which restores your computer to the "Frozen" state. I also have a Toshiba computer with no Deep Freeze on it. My question is that would it be possible to creat a system restore point on my Toshiba and then replace the system volume information folder with the one on the ThinkPad so I could restore to a point with no Deep Freeze? Would this work?

• Can't install on a Thinkpad W700ds

  I want to install Ubuntu on my computer. I don't know much about Linux, but I know my way around a terminal and whatnot. My computer, a ThinkPad W700ds, refuses to read from my CD when booting. The md5sum is correct and the same CD boots fine from another computer. When I try to install from a USB, I can get the main screen, but when I select any of the options from there my screen turns black for more than 3 hours until I have to turn it off. Is there anything I can do about this? I want to have a true partition, don't want a Wubi'd install. It's a 10.10 x64 image, but my computer is 64 bit (running Windows 7 x64 right now) and the exact same CD is bootable on other computers. I've been on #ubuntu IRC for days trying to work this out but nobody knew, so I figured I would get more responses by posting to here. UPDATE: Thanks Jorge Castro. Both the alternate and desktop installers seem to not work at all with the CD. On a USB, the alternate installer lets me start installing, but in the middle of installation I get this message. The people on #ubuntu told me to just exit installation at that point, so I did.

• Open ports broken from internal network

  Quick summary: Forwarded port works from the outside world, but from the internal network using the external IP the connection is refused. This is a simplified situation to make the explanation easier: I have a computer that is running a service on port 12345. This computer has an internal IP 192.168.1.100 and is connected directly to a modem/router which has internal IP 192.168.1.1 and external (public, static) IP 1.2.3.4. (The router is TP-LINK TD-w8960N) I have set up port forwarding (virtual server) at port 12345 to go to port 12345 at 192.168.1.100. If I run telnet 192.168.1.100 12345 from the same computer everything works. But running telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 says connection refused. If I do this on another computer (on the same internal network, connected to the router) the same thing happens. This would seem like the port forwarding is not working. However... If I run a online port checking service on my external IP and the service port it says the port is open and I can see the remote server connecting and immediately closing connection. And using another computer that is connected to the internet using a mobile connection I can also use telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 and I get a working connection. So the port forwarding seems to be working, however using external IP from the internal network doesn't. I have no idea what can be causing this, since another setup very much like this (different router) works for me. I can access a service running on a server from inside the network both through the internal and external IP.

• How to go about designing an intermediate routing filter program to accept input and forward accordingly?

  My predicament: I designed an app, written in Python, to read my mail and check for messages that contain a certain digital signature. It opens these and looks for keywords. If the message contains these keywords, certain related functions area executed on the computer. It is a way I can control my computer from my cell phone without being there. I am still in the beginning stages and it can only currently remotely open and close applications/processes. The obvious issue is security risks. I hoped to spearhead that by requiring and checking for that digital signature. However, my issue comes when I'd like to make this program usable by multiple users. The idea is that the user will send keywords: username and password, for instance, to log into their personal email account and send messages to it to be parsed. Please ignore the security implications of sending non-encoded passwords through email. (Though if you could help me on that part I'd much appreciate it as well, but currently, that is not the scope of my question.) My issue is designing an intermediary process that will take an email/password to read an email and scan for those keywords. The issue is, that the program has to be accessing an email to read the email for the username/password! I have got myself into a loop and cannot figure out how to have this required intermediary program. I could just create an arbitrary email account and have that check for login-creds, but is there a better way of doing this than that? Also, is there a better way of communicating with a computer remotely than this? Especially if the computer is not a server and is behind a router with only a subnet ip? If I am asking this question in the wrong place, I deeply apologize. Any help would be much appreciated!

• Connecting PC to TV via HDMI/DVI: Windows XP doesn't allow the appropriate screen resolution

  I have a computer that is connected to the living room TV (a Panasonic) via HDMI. There is no other monitor connected. My problem is that the computer, which is running Windows XP, does not allow me to set the proper resolution for the TV. Both the graphics adapter and the TV should support the 1280x720 resolution, but it cannot be selected - the only available options are 1280x600 and 800x600, both in the "native" Windows dialog box and the custom Intel graphics options dialog box. Do anyone have a suggestion for a solution for this? Things I've thought of: Setting the resolution directly in the registry (where?) Installing some "custom" monitor driver (the TV manufacturer does not appear to provide any, currently the "generic" one is used) Details on the setup: Connection: DVI output on the computer via a passive DVI-HDMI adapter to the HDMI input on the TV, audio is run on a separate link, the TV is able to combine video and audio without any problem, the problem is there regardless of whether or not the audio is connected. The connection is several meters long through some walls, for this reason using a VGA cable instead is not an option. Note that the report explicitly says that the TV supports 1280x720. Still, I am not allowed to select it in Graphics Options, only 1280x600 and 800x600 is available. For 800x600, there's a lot of black around the edges; for 1280x600, the screen is "zoomed" so the edges of the monitor image (like the taskbar) is not visible. Other: The computer is running Windows XP. More recent versions of Windows are not an option (I have no licence). Linux is probably not an option (some of the video streaming sites I plan to use do not support it, I think) I wrote the rest of the details below. Thanks for any help!! TV: Panasonic TX-L32X10Y, European version; a 720p 32" quite "regular" LCD TV. • Print job leaves queue but document isn't printed

  I'm dealing with an HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One printer. It's connected via USB to a desktop running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. If I attempt to print something like a web page or a word document, the print job will show up in the print queue and the printer would stir. By stir, I mean, it would seem to prepare itself to print. However, the print job would then leave queue (I'm thinking the computer sees it as completed) and the printer would never actually print anything. However I went into Printers and Devices under the Windows start menu, into printer properties, and print a test page, the test page would print out successfully. I attempted to uninstall and re-install the printer drivers for the printer, but the printer would continue the same behavior afterwards. I also connected the printer to another computer and the printer will print just about anything. I also checked to make sure that the computer the printer needs to be connected to was update to date as far as the OS. The machine is fully up to date. I played with the way the computer handles printer spooling. Under the printer properties, under the "Advanced" tab, I had the print job print directly to the printer. In all these instances, the same behavior continues. I've restarted the printer spooling service. I've also gone under C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and deleted files that were sitting in the folder. I have ran SFC /scannnow and the system found no errors in the system's integrity. I had the computer and printer make a cold reboot individually. The only lead I really have going for me is that since the printer prints on other PCs, I can only assume that there is something wrong with the way the PC is configured.

• User Group Policy in Server 2008 to set Default Profile settings

  I have computers to deploy and want to apply changes to the default user policy on these PCs automatically. What's the best way to do this? Our current procedure is: Create the computer account in an OU called "Deployment" on our server Unbox the PC Login as the user who will be receiving the PC Change settings (pre-configure outlook, authorize Office, etc.) move computer account to correct OU Place the PC on the users desk. I would like to make as many of the changes in step #4 with Group Policies applied to the Deployment OU if possible since they're largely repeated for every computer. There are a dozen policies created and the computer ones apply correctly but the user policies do not. I understand this is because the end user is not in our "Deployment" OU. I don't want to apply these settings to the user at their current station just the new PC I'm working on. I believe I have the desired effect with Group Policy Loopback Replace enabled on policies that need user policies changed but this just feels wrong/inefficient/complicated to maintain. Am I doing this correctly? Is Group Policy Loopback the only way to change user accounts on one computer? What do you do to setup a user on a new PC?

• Sharing RAM resources between 2 or more computers

  I know there was a somewhat similar question before: How to share CPU or RAM? But, let me just specify it a little more... When Microsoft Windows requires more RAM capacity than available it uses a swap-file to temporarily store the data there, this is actually something like a hard-drive-based RAM. This technology is used for many years. Theoretically, it shouldn't be too hard to implement a similar technology that uses the RAM of different computer(s) in the network for temporary data storage. This just requires a software that runs on computers in the network that accepts and returns data from/to the main computer and keep that data in the RAM; plus the operation system of the main computer must have the ability to use computers in the network instead of (or in addition to) the swap-file. I wonder, are there any implementations of this idea? This would allow users to build RAM clusters using all of their home or office computers, that will boost the performance of a single computer for some development/gaming/video tasks, etc.

• How can I disable the network detection on Windows 7?

  I have a computer running Windows 7 that shares some files on the network. This works fine for a while until for some unknown reason the computer decides that it is connected to a new, unknown public network and disables the file sharing capabilites. Nothing physically changes with the computer, it is still connected to the same network via ethernet cable. But it does misidentify the network every other day, just plugging out the ethernet cable and putting it back in leads Windows to correctly identify the work network and enabling the share again. Is there some way to stop Windows from trying to identify the network automatically, and just tell it that the network on that computer will never change?

• Suppressing iTunes Licensing Agreement for Roaming Profiles

  This application is stored locally from our company image we are testing, but our users are using roaming profiles and each time they log in to a different computer or the main computer they work on iTunes keeps asking them to accept the licensing agreement. Is there anyway to keep this agreement from coming up since they are not storing this information in their profile or on the computer locally? All the computers are on Windows 7 and we run a Server 2008 R2 Domain.
