  I've noticed that some Western Digital hard drives are now sporting 4K sectors, that is, the sectors are larger: 4096 bytes vs. the long-standing standard of 512 bytes. So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? Why didn't it happen sooner? Are there things to look out for when buying a 4K sector hard drive? e.g. incompatibility? Anything else we should know about 4K sectors?

• Explanation of nodev and nosuid in fstab

  I see those two options constantly suggested on the web when someone describes how to mount a tmpfs or ramfs. Often also with noexec but I'm specifically interested in nodev and nosuid. I basically hate just blindly repeating what somebody suggested, without real understanding. And since I only see copy/paste instructions on the net regarding this, I ask here. This is from documentation: nodev - Don't interpret block special devices on the filesystem. nosuid - Block the operation of suid, and sgid bits. But I would like a practical explanation what could happen if I leave those two out. Let's say that I have configured tmpfs or ramfs(without these two mentioned options set) that is accessible(read+write) by a specific (non-root)user on the system. What can that user do to harm the system? Excluding the case of consuming all available system memory in case of ramfs

• how do you uninstall an xampp installation that refuses to uninstall?

  I downloaded xampp 1.7.3 (32) on windows 7 (64) in the programs(86) folder. both MySql and Apache refuse to run, they start and then instantly turn of. All ports are free. So I decide to uninstall however, when i run the uninstaller I receive the following error "Input Error: Can not find script file "C:\Program Files (x86)\xampp\uninst.temp\xampp_uninstall.vbs" XAMPP uninstall not OK Why is there spaces in the above line and does this matter "C:\Program Files (x86)" ? Can somebody please help me to understand the problem & uninstall xampp (or get it to work). It does not show in the control panel so I am stuck. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• vps running out of memory, 200MB free

  At the beginning of this year I took a VPS for my website because I was running against the resource limits from a shared hosting. Here are the things I know: 2GB memory, with 1GB swap Debian X64 server ED installed Software running on the webserver: mysql apache postfix pop3 imap amavisd clamd cron fail2ban munin-node pure-ftpd spamd nginx Now for the setup: Nginx listens on port 80 and handles the static files, the php side is done by apache2 running mod_php in combi with apc(no var caching!). Iam using a pretty 'busy' drupal and phpbb stack on the server, for drupal iam using boost and authcache to handle of the server load with a pressflow stack. phpbb is just phpbb3 with some mods installed, but has at max 30 users online at a time.. The problem is that its staring to use the swap after a few days after a reboot and thus the site becomes slower. I'v added pictures of monit and munin, so maybe somebody can help me out... • Postfix configuration w.r.t. port 25

  After a considerable amount of research, I have configured my postfix server to use dovecot to accept SMTPS connections over port 465 and everything works swimmingly. Unfortunately, I forgot that, unless I listen to port 25, I'm not going to receive any e-mail from the net. I'm hoping somebody knows off the top of their head how to open up port 25 on Postfix for anonymous users, but disallow relaying and any other bad things on that port. And to leave the port 465 the way it is. • "Unknown user name or bad password" when I launch ADUC

  When I open up Active Directory Users and Computers from my workstation, I receive an error: Naming information cannot be located because: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly configured and is currently online. If I log in to my workstation as somebody else, it works. If I log into a different workstation using my account, it works. All the workstations in question are running Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit) or Windows Server 2008. The domain controller in question is running Windows Small Business Server 2008. Everything else (that I tried) in the Remote Server Administration Tools runs just fine. Any thoughts? Edit: I just tried reinstalling RSAT. No such luck.

• For how long do I need to store the logs?

  I will soon be running an internet-based public service which will physically be hosted in the UK on a virtual server. The virtual server is provided by the ISP. I was wondering if there is/are any legal requirement(s) to keep access logs, and if yes - for how long? There is a Wikipedia article that touches this subject but I'm afraid my brain just can't grasp the legislative gibberish. I believe there's EU law and there's UK law; and I do need to comply to both, right? Can somebody explain this in pure layman's terms?

• How to link data in different worksheets

  I tried consolidation but I can not get the following to work as it keeps saying no data consolidated. Can somebody try this dummy application and if they figure out how to do the following below can give me a step by step guide so I can attempt myself to learn. I'm not sure if I need to use any coding for this: In the dummy application I have 2 worksheets. One known as "1st", the other "Cases". In the "1st" worksheet you can insert and delete records for the "Case" table at the bottom, what I want to do is insert a row into the Case Table in worksheet "1st" and enter in the data for that row. What should happen is that data should be automatically be updated in the table in the "Cases" worksheet. But I can't seem to get this to work. • How to make local apache server public/visible ?

  Hello. I am running an Apache2 server on a Fedora 13. I'd like to make it publicly accessible(visible).For example I'd like when somebody types http://my.ip.numbes/ that they would see what I have in my document root folder. Just for a presentation of a course work at university. Permissions are set to 755. User owning the document root is apache. SELinux is temporarily disabled. But port 80 is closed. I tried to open it by adding an entry to iptables and restarting them, no change. I guess I am missing something big here. Help would be greatly appreciated. Note: I have a static (public, real) IP address.

• Recovering an old website

  I have a client with an old website that somebody setup for him long ago. The guy who set it up is unreachable, so how do we go about trying to take it over? A WHOIS lookup got us some contact information, but I don't have great hopes for that (it hasn't been update in quite some time). The nameservers are ns1.theplanet.com and ns2.theplanet.com, and we will try calling them, but I don't expect we'll be able to get much from them. What are our options? Is there a way I can discover the registrar so we can try contacting them as well? EDIT: It would be sufficient if we could get control of the domain name or put in some sort of redirect to the new site. Either hosting was prepaid for quite some time, or someone else is still paying for it, so we don't care about that.

• Run single php code using multiple domains

  Hi all, I have a php code/site at xyz.com. Now I want to run the same site using multiple domains means when somebody open domain1.com, domain2.com ,domain4.com, so on urls, it should run the code/side that is at xyz.com I know one way to do this. I can host all these domains to the server where xyz.com is hosted so all domains will point to same peace of code/site. n above solution i need to hosted the domains manually. Is there any other way to do this as I want to add domains dynamically? Thanks in advance!

• Has anyboy been able to install Pantograph for Blender on Windows?

  I am specially interested on if somebody is actually doing/maintaining an installer for Windows, as there are quite several issues when installing all dependencies, etc. (for example, there might be someone already doing a Installbuilder installer for it and am just not aware of the matter) If not, at least if someone got it working and has some key tip to share. I am never able to fully get it all up and running. I'd love to have a not super complex way to install each new build of this great vector rendering module for Blender. • Not able to output to file in the Windows command line

But when the loop runs for the second time, path and size are not getting printed to the file. size.txt only contains the path and size of the 1st folder. • /var/plone ownership

  could anyone help me on my problem, my /var/plone folder's ownership was accidentally changed. can anyone tell me who the owner of this folder? could it be www:root or www-data:root or root:root? btw i changed it to www:root and some images and styles cannot be loaded on my site. Everytime somebody opens the site, it keeps loading and loading and after a few minutes it stops and some images are not loaded and style are not well displayed as it is supposed to be. thanks

• unable to kill process / logout on windows server 2003

  My own console .net application stuck in a "ghost" stage. It just shows a window that i can't close. It doesn't show up as a process in the task manager. when i try to "find windows process" using Process Explorer (from sysinternals) it says there is no process that owns that window or something like that. The problem is that it doesn't allow me to logout or reboot the server (remotely) because logoff process keeps waiting on that window to close. shutdown /r /f also is stuck waiting for it. I can probably have somebody go an reboot the server but i'd like to know if there is a way to close that process, close that session or force logout remotely. This is windows server 2003, but i had the same issue on XP just a few days ago.

• Hostname confusion (Ubuntu Server 10.04)

  I have just setup Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition. I have been following this tutorial. The DNS information seems to be setup correctly now, but I am confused about the hostname. Currently it is laughingbuddha.home. That is a name I created. Now, I am mainly not sure how to connect from another computer on my network. I basically want to be able to put PHP files on the server box and then test them via a web browser on my other computer. So, I think I digressed from my first question, but would somebody please help me figure out if the hostname is okay for doing what I need to do? Thank-you!

• Setting up virtual network in VMware workstation

  I am playing around with VMware workstation and am trying to set up a small virtual network. I am having a little trouble with this I hope somebody can help me out. I want to have all the different virtual machines to have different internal IP adresses so I can ping them SSH etc, from within my windows machine. I am directly connected to the internet without a router, so using a bridged connection does not seem to work. The other options NAT and host-only do not seem to work also. I think i need to create a new adapter. I am testing this out with a virtual image of linux debain 5.0 lenny. I have WMware Workstation 7 with virtual network editor. Can anyone guide me in the right direction.

• My computer is playing audio without any program open

  This is the weirdest thing ever that has happened to my computer (running Windows 7). I haven't installed anything lastly, except lavasoft adware antivirus When my computer stats then audio starts playing, mostly hip hop There is no programs opened. I tried killing all unknown processed, no success. I tried resetting the firewall options of the antivirus, no success. If I disconnect from internet, then it works. The antivirus is not detecting anything. Is somebody is streaming from another house? Is that possible? and making my life impossible. How can I check and stop this?

• Can't get samba to see other PCs in Kubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)

  I'm new to networking. I'm trying to share a folder between to computers (both have kubuntu 10.04 installed). I'm able to share a folder with samba and can see that folder through samba on the same computer. But if I try to go on the other PC I can't see the first one. • problem on expand network using a router

  I have a Netgear FS605 v3 router, and i'm trying to expand my network. The router is connected to the cable modem with cat5 cable. I have 2 laptop connected to the router but i'm only able to get internet connectivity in one. The first laptop i turn on, get the signal and the other one will show no connectivity. I have restarted all the devices many times but no luck. Can somebody explain me how to get this solved. Thanks.

• Launching multiple applications with a single command/script/shortcut

  I realized a few days ago that every time I sit down at work, I do a few things after unlocking my computer. First, I open up Firefox, then I open up Chrome, then I log in to Digsby. I realized I could probably save repeating this daily by writing a small batch script to open up Firefox and Chrome , but I couldn't figure out how to make it work.. and since the whole effort is to save time I don't want to bash my head around in the windows command prompt to do it. I also tired this in powershell but ran in to a bunch of security nonsense. Is there a way to do this that I am missing? Bonus points if somebody has figured out how to manipulate Digsby via COM , scripting, or python =)

  Possible Duplicate: What’s your favorite ticketing system? I was wondering if somebody could recommend me a very user friendly or simple general purpose ticketing/tech support system. I need something that is web based, preferably open-sourced/free software implemented using PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails or Java (as back end) with MySQL or PostgreSQL as database engine. I need something that is not development management oriented or project management oriented like Eventum or similar (random example), something to which the user can connect open a tech support request and be able to follow it until is solved or dropped.I need it to be open-sourced to be able to modify it if there is a need or extend it. I tried a number of such systems available and I found that osTicket or eTicket is something that it's close to what I need, but the code is somewhat flaky and some of the features are working badly or behaving strangely. Any thoughts/advice where to find something similar? Thanks!

• Is possible to arbitrarily register names to the same public IP?

  I registered a domain, lets say mysite.com (for example), then, results that somebody else has an A record from anotheraddress.com pointing to the same IP address of mine (in a VPS in linode.com) What can I do to avoid this???, I mean, I would prefer reject accesses from anotheraddress.com to my site. I just know only by casualty putting my genuine domain name on this http://www.domaintools.com/reverse-ip/ My DNS server is name.com, and the DNS server pointing to the my public IP is from GoDaddy. Is possible to register arbitrarily names to the same public IP? Can I use my DNS record with mysite.com to point to 209.85.133.147 (google.com), for example?
