• How to increase the amount of steps of brightness adjustment-key

  The screen of my laptop (Dell Vostro 3460) supports 16 levels of brightness: Not only according to the manufacturer, but also as is clear from two OSs: Both Windows 7 and Ubuntu (dual-booted) support all levels. On Windows 7, the hotkeys for brightness adjustment support all levels. In ubuntu it is apparent when going on the brightness slidebar (see picture below) from left to right; I can count 16 different levels of brightness when doing so. When using the hotkeys (Fn+F4 and Fn+F4), however, only 5 levels are supported. How can I adjust these levels and make them in line with what my screen supports?

• SpriteBatch.Begin() making my model not render correctly

  I was trying to output some debug information using DrawString when I noticed my model suddenly was being rendered like it was inside-out (like the culling had been disabled or something) and the texture maps weren't applied I commented out the DrawString method until I only had SpriteBatch.Begin() and .End() and that was enough to cause the model rendering corruption - when I commented those calls out the model rendered correctly What could this be a symptom of? I've stripped it down to the barest of code to isolate the problem and this is what I noticed.   Replaceable parameter syntax for the console object in C#. I am taking the O'Reilly C# Course 1 and it is asking for a replaceable parameter syntax and it is not very clear on what that means. Currently I used this: double trouble = 99999.0009; double bubble = 11111.0001; Console.WriteLine(trouble * bubble); Am I missing the meaning of replaceable parameter syntax? Can someone provide an example for what I am looking for? Original question for the quiz: "Create two variables, both doubles, assign them numbers greater than 10,000, and include a decimal component. Output the result of multiplying the numbers together, but use replaceable parameter syntax of the Console object, and multiply the numbers within the call to the Console.WriteLine() method."

  On this official Google page about canonical links it says: Can rel="canonical" be a redirect? Yes, you can specify a URL that redirects as a canonical URL. Google will then process the redirect as usual and try to index it. There is no mention that this might dilute the impact of the canonical link. However, Google has made clear elsewhere that 301 redirects do dilute PageRank - roughly as much as a link dilutes PageRank. Is that relevant here? I'm assuming the answer is "no" but I wanted to confirm. Relevant but not duplicate: Does Rel=Canonical Pass PR from Links or Just Fix Dup Content.

• How do I make Unity quit opening Firefox under the Shiretoko icon?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and whenever I open Firefox, whether it is from searching on the dash or clicking a 'quick-launch' launcher, it always opens yet another icon for the running instance that is a blank page and says Shiretoko. It will pulse the Firefox icon for a while (I'm guessing until a timeout or something). It's as if Unity no longer recognizes the Firefox process as Firefox and misidentifies it as Shiretoko. (I know Shiretoko was a testing version of Firefox a long time ago.) How do I set Unity straight? I imagine that it has something to do with me once using Shiretoko, but I believe that was even on a different installation, just the same home folder. Is there some place Unity caches this information that I can clear (or remove specific parts of)?

I'm working with last updated ubuntu 12.04 and gnome shell, and I wonder how I can REMOVE and I say remove not clear or avoid feeding but remove completly the "recent item" bookmark you can see in the standard save windows of gnome shell here's a picture (in french it's "Récemment utilisés"): Sorry not enought point to post image to see what I talk about, just do that: -open gedit -type anything -save your file -Now that windows got a "recent item" and I want it DOWN I cannot reward point, but I would if I could for the guy finding a solution, and a bonus point if you find a way to remove it every where it appears in gnome shell.   How to interact with colleague who will happily talk about a thing, but from the way he talk about it, it becomes clear, that he does not fully understand some underlying concepts - but at the same time is not that kind of personality, that would ask for clarification or explanation (maybe because it is sign of weakness). There is difficulty involved in such a situation, since such people will demand to be consulted in a decision process, but instead of brainstorming solutions one will need to neutralize the diffusion of the concepts first, and when this is done time is already up and solution cannot be brainstormed any more. Maybe FUD is not the correct acronym, maybe DIS, Diffusion, Indifference, Surety.

  I recently started a new job as a contract developer, and my non-developer boss of about two weeks ago gave me the task to re-create an app from another language and developer that he will reuse with multiple clients (replacing the front-end), that I estimated would take longer than his estimate of 12 hours. Two weeks later, I'm 230% over-budget. I admit this was my 2nd web app, I had been a wordpress developer in the past, so I am somewhat new to code igniter, but not shabby php by any means. My boss hired me knowing this and I was clear that it would take longer than his 12 hours. He's seen me in the office on task for 2 weeks, he should be somewhat prepared for this bill. Do I expect the full amount of hours, or do I filter against how much of learned? Can I bill for research as a developer?

• Working out of a vertex array for destrucible objects

  I have diamond-shaped polygonal bullets. There are lots of them on the screen. I did not want to create a vertex array for each, so I packed them into a single vertex array and they're all drawn at once. | bullet1.xyz | bullet1.rgb | bullet2.xyz | bullet2.rgb This is great for performance.. there is struct Bullet { vector<Vector3f*> verts ; // pointers into the vertex buffer } ; This works fine, the bullets can move and do collision detection, all while having their data in one place. Except when a bullet "dies" Then you have to clear a slot, and pack all the bullets towards the beginning of the array. Is this a good approach to handling lots of low poly objects? How else would you do it?

• Unix as opposed to Windows (Java and C++)

  Firstly I should explain the background. I am interested in high frequency trading programming roles. After looking at many job specs it is very clear that there is a big demand for programmers who have programmed Java and C++ on Unix as opposed to Windows. My question is what are the differences a High Freq programmer would come across? It cannot be something in the language itself because syntactically they do not differ over OS? Therefore I thought it must be something which the programming language has to interface, resources etc? Could anyone please help me out as I am trying to improve my C++/Java on Unix, in order to aim for this type of career? ps I'm guessing part of this answer lies with the socket infrastructure on Unix?

• blurry images with mogrify & convert

  Does anyone know why this image is so blurry? I did a convert from pdf to png and it turned out like that. Before deleting imagemagick and it's entire toolset from software-center most of my image programs were displaying like this image. Now for the most part it's just blurry, though a couple still display like that such as gimp. I am running in xfce maybe it's to do with the distribution enviornment. Main issue is the absurd blurriness. I reinstalled all additional packages that were available for imagemagick in the software-center I use convert *.pdf *.png & mogrify -format png *.pdf to convert Now on the other hand if I converted the file to djvu and converted that to a tif. The images have no problem converting. More so it does not generate an oversized tif file of around 25mb compared to 3mb with djvu which is super clear & no blurriness.

• What effect does using itemprop="significantLinks" on anchors have for SEO?

  So as I've described in a previous post about span tags within head tags, I'm practicing application of microdata via http://schema.org. Anyone who's browsed the documentation there knows that there's a lot of need for improvement for more clear understandings on use for each property. My question on this post is more about the "significantLinks" property and how it effects SEO for on page, in content anchored text. Does anyone have any more information regarding whether its good to use for link optimization? I understand what schema.org means that it's to be used on "non-navigational links" and those links should be relevant to the current page's meaning. But will using this property hurt SEO or make SEO better for each page? Thanks in advance, as by answering this with accurate information you are helping not just me, but many people who are trying to make their customers more successful through helping their rank for relevant keywords to their business, bringing them more search engine traffic.

  I've often seen such comments be used: function foo() { ... } // foo while (...) { ... } // while if (...) { ... } // if and sometimes even as far as if (condition) { ... } // if (condition) I've never understood this practice and thus never applied it. If your code is so long that you need to know what this ending } is then perhaps you should consider splitting it up into separate functions. Also, most developers tools are able to jump to the matching bracket. And finally the last is, for me, a clear violation to the DRY principle; if you change the condition you would have to remember to change the comment as well (or else it could get messy for the maintainer, or even for you). So why do people use this? Should we use it, or is it bad practice?

  I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction.

  I need some help on appearing very professional on my first freelance project. How / What should you do to achieve this? Background: I started as a full time web developer 18 months ago, two promotions later I am now a senior software engineer. I've never had any problems with designing / developing / coding a complicated system. I thought I could use some help for Christmas and I started bidding for a project and now I have one - from a very reputable lawyers association in London. I have no problem dealing with the actual implementation of the system, but I have no idea how to appear professional throughout the whole process. About the project: This lawyers association are starting a distant training courses and in addition to having a website to show off all their clients etc, they want a students area where their students would log in, download course materials allocated to them etc.. and an admin section where they assign courses to students / create new ones / upload materials etc.. Questions breakdown: 1) How should I start with the requirement gathering? Is using scrum a good idea, or should I use something like Volere Template - and what should I do with it? should I submit a copy to the client etc.. 2) How often should I meet the client? Would once a fortnight would be good? 3) What are the processes / protocols that I need to follow so that they would be satisfied with me and think that I am very professional 4) How much should I charge for the product? 5) How should I get a quote / contract / receipt for the whole project? 6) What are the steps that professional freelancers go through, during the life cycle of a project? My Research so far Looking at How much should I charge doesn't help.. I live in London, zone 1, though I have no idea how much a project of this size would cost. Help on this would be appreciated. How to be professional articles talks about the work / time management etc and not the actual process, what would real people do etc.. it's like academia theory, but not practical. If this needs revising, please let me know, do not close it because of whatever reason, I will edit the question or details to fit the needs. Thanks for reading a lengthy question.

• Texture not rendering in correct order in xna 4?

• How can set up a file sharing server to allow remote access over a WAN?

  I want to set up a server to allow remote access over a WAN. The purpose is to allow people to remote connect and download specific files from a specified folder hosted on the server. Is there software available to achieve this, preferably with an interface so I can easily add and remove users, plus monitor who is connected at any time? I have looked around and only found terminal references, and not very clear how to set up. I have a service running on my Win server, but I am hoping to move from that to Ubuntu for my file sharing.   This is a question about preferences. Assume a programming language offers these two options to make a string with some variables: "Hello, my name is ". name ." and I'm ". age ." years old." • How to boot into Live USB/CD with UEFI on latest Vaio S series?

  I am unable to boot from USB/CD into a live Ubuntu session to proceed with install. Esc or F12 didn't work and I can't seem to be able to enter the bios settings. Sony Vaio S w/ Ivy Bridge (just one month old, Insyde H2O EFI?) I have read about: creating /EFI/boot on a fat16 stick http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12071096&postcount=2 installing rEFInd using the Alternate install CD (supposedly in order not to mess with W7 UEFI boot partition) It's pretty clear what I have to do afterwards http://askubuntu.com/a/157062 but I am at loss on how to simply boot into a Live Session then install.
