• What ever happened to the Defense Software Reuse System (DSRS)?

  I've been reading some papers from the early 90s about a US Department of Defense software reuse initiative called the Defense Software Reuse System (DSRS). The most recent mention of it I could find was in a paper from 2000 - A Survey of Software Reuse Repositories Defense Software Repository System (DSRS) The DSRS is an automated repository for storing and retrieving Reusable Software Assets (RSAs) [14]. The DSRS software now manages inventories of reusable assets at seven software reuse support centers (SRSCs). The DSRS serves as a central collection point for quality RSAs, and facilitates software reuse by offering developers the opportunity to match their requirements with existing software products. DSRS accounts are available for Government employees and contractor personnel currently supporting Government projects... ...The DoD software community is trying to change its software engineering model from its current software cycle to a process-driven, domain-specific, architecture-based, repository-assisted way of constructing software [15]. In this changing environment, the DSRS has the highest potential to become the DoD standard reuse repository because it is the only existing deployed, operational repository with multiple interoperable locations across DoD. Seven DSRS locations support nearly 1,000 users and list nearly 9,000 reusable assets. The DISA DSRS alone lists 3,880 reusable assets and has 400 user accounts... The far-term strategy of the DSRS is to support a virtual repository. These interconnected repositories will provide the ability to locate and share reusable components across domains and among the services. An effective and evolving DSRS is a central requirement to the success of the DoD software reuse initiative. Evolving DoD repository requirements demand that DISA continue to have an operational DSRS site to support testing in an actual repository operation and to support DoD users. The classification process for the DSRS is a basic technology for providing customer support [16]. • Windows 8 for productivity?

  At long last I’ve started using Windows 8.  I boot from a VHD on which I have installed Office, Visio, Visual Studio, SQL Server, etc.  For a week, now, I’ve been happily writing code and documents and using Visio and PowerPoint.  I am, very much, a ‘productivity’ user rather than a content consumer.   I spend my days flitting between countless windows and browser tabs displayed across dual monitors.  I need to access a lot of different functionality and information in as fluid a fashion as possible. With that in mind, and like so many others, I was worried about Windows 8.  The Metro interface is primarily about content consumption on touch-enabled screens, and not really geared for people like me sitting in front of an 8-core non-touch laptop and an additional Samsung monitor.  I still use a mouse, not my finger.  And I create more than I consume. Clearly, Windows 8 won’t be viable for people like me unless Metro keeps out of my hair when using productivity and development tools.  With this in mind, I had long expected Microsoft to provide some mechanism for switching Metro off.  There was a registry hack in last year’s Developer Preview, but this capability has been removed.   That’s brave.  So, how have things worked out so far? Well, I am really quite surprised.  When I played with the Developer Preview last year, it was clear that Metro was unfinished and didn’t play well enough with the desktop.  Obviously I expected things to improve, but the context switching from desktop to full-screen seemed a heavy burden to place on users.  That sense of abrupt change hasn’t entirely gone away (how could it), but after a few days, I can’t say that I find it burdensome or irritating.   I’ve got used very quickly to ‘gesturing’ with my mouse at the bottom or top right corners of the screen to move between applications, using the Windows key to toggle the Start screen and generally finding my way around.   I am surprised at how effective the Start screen is, given the rather basic grouping features it provides.  Of course, I had to take control of it and sort things the way I want.  If anything, though, the Start screen provides a better navigation and application launcher tool than the old Start menu. What I didn’t expect was the way that Metro enhances the productivity story.  As I write this, I’ve got my desktop open with a maximised Word window.  However, the desktop extends only across about 85% of the width of my screen.  On the left hand side, I have a column that displays the new Metro email client.  This is currently showing me a list of emails for my main work account.  I can flip easily between different accounts and read my email within that same column.  As I work on documents, I want to be able to monitor my inbox with a quick glance. The desktop, of course, has its own snap feature.  I could run the desktop full screen and bring up Outlook and Word side by side.  However, this doesn’t begin to approach the convenience of snapping the Metro email client.  Consider that when I snap a window on the desktop, it initially takes up 50% of the screen.  Outlook doesn’t really know anything about snap, and doesn’t adjust to make effective use of the limited screen estate.  Even at 50% screen width, it is difficult to use, so forget about trying to use it in a Metro fashion. In any case, I am left with the prospect of having to manually adjust everything to view my email effectively alongside Word.  Worse, there is nothing stopping another window from overlapping and obscuring my email.  It becomes a struggle to keep sight of email as it arrives.  Of course, there is always ‘toast’ to notify me when things arrive, but if Outlook is obscured, this just feels intrusive. The beauty of the Metro snap feature is that my email reader now exists outside of my desktop.   The Metro app has been crafted to work well in the fixed width column as well as in full-screen.  It cannot be obscured by overlapping windows.  I still get notifications if I wish.  More importantly, it is clear that careful attention has been given to how things work when moving between applications when ‘snapped’.  If I decide, say to flick over to the Metro newsreader to catch up with current affairs, my desktop, rather than my email client, obligingly makes way for the reader.  With a simple gesture and click, or alternatively by pressing Windows-Tab, my desktop reappears. Another pleasant surprise is the way Windows 8 handles dual monitors.  It’s not just the fact that both screens now display the desktop task bar.  It’s that I can so easily move between Metro and the desktop on either screen.  I can only have Metro on one screen at a time which makes entire sense given the ‘full-screen’ nature of Metro apps.  Using dual monitors feels smoother and easier than previous versions of Windows. Overall then, I’m enjoying the Windows 8 improvements.  Strangely, for all the hype (“Windows reimagined”, etc.), my perception as a ‘productivity’ user is more one of evolution than revolution.  It all feels very familiar, but just better.

  is there any difference between using Ubuntu Unity and Ubunt Classic/Fallback? Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the Launcher or the Dash. Of course Ubuntu Classic/Fallback doesn't have the Launcher/Dash, but this is not the difference I'm talking about. I mean differences related to performance, features, functionalities, compatibilities, etc. These kinds of differences. I'm asking this because I've heard the Fallback Mode is kind of "incomplete" when it's compared to Gnome Shell or Ubuntu Unity, so I just wanted to know whether or not it's true, because if it's true, I don't think using Fallback Mode is worth it.

• Managed servers getting down regularly by Node Manager. WAD?

  Recently I have been working on a service request where several instances were running, and several technologies were being used, including SOA, BAM, BPEL and others. At a first glance, this may seem to be a Node Manager problem. But on this situation, the problem was at JMS - Persistent Store level. Node Manager can automatically restart Managed Servers that have the "failed" health state, or have shut down unexpectedly due to a system crash or reboot. As a matter of fact, from the provided log files it was clear that the instance was becoming unhealthy because of a persist6ent Store problem. So finally, the problem here was not with Node Manager as it was working as designed, and the restart was being caused by the Persistent Store. After this Persistent Store problem was fixed, everuthing went fine. This particular issue that I worked was on an Exalogic machine, but note that this may happen on any hardware running Weblogic.

• How to enable a symlink in this case

  I cannot categorize this question under ubuntu since it has nothing to do with it. But I know people here can definitely answer this. I login to one of my deployment boxes using SSH (no ubuntu here). I am working in a tool called TeamCity which uses a folder called ".BuildServer" under home directory of the user. This folder may grow in size as the application runs but the current user is only given a limited amount of space. But the good thing this I got a folder access outside /home/deploy (deploy being the user here) folder. I now want to link this .BuildServer inside the /home/deploy directory to the other folder where I got permission for (meaning all the files should be re-routed to that directory) Hope my question was clear, please help.

• Why google isn't updating my site title in search results? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Google doesn't seem to update the description or title of my homepage I had my domain for few days before I uploaded site to it, and it had one title, and then when I uploaded content it should get new title, but with my misunderstanding of WordPress it had blocked robots.txt and keyword with no-index and no-follow. But I removed that like 7 days ago, and I see in reports that Google bot is crawling over my site, but my site title isn't updating, it still has old domain title when site wasn't there... My robots.txt has now: User-agent: * Allow: / I have clear title tag on every page. How long does it take to update? Do I need to check something else?

• Why Android for new (micro) consoles?

  There are a lot of new (micro) consoles with Android inside coming soon or already there (OUYA for example). My question is: why use Android and not another OS as base for these consoles? I assume that there are pragmatic answers to this but I can't see any clear killer feature. For example, one can assume that any stable Linux distribution would work (like Valve seem to think). Android is primarily targetted at mobile platforms which mean it is built around the idea of being interrupted which goes against a lot of what console devs needs in new hardware - but is not killing Android as a platform for gamedev either as it's just a constraint. Why not another OS? What's the Android killer features that make micro-console builder using it instead of Linux or anything else?

• Top Down bounds of vision

  Obviously in a first person view point the player sees only what's in front of them (with the exception of radars and rearview mirrors, etc). My game has a top down perspective, but I still want to limit what the character sees based on their facing. I've already worked out having objects obstruct vision, but there are two other factors that I worry would be disorienting and want to do right. I want the player to have reduced peripheral vision and very little view behind them. The assumption is he can turn his head and so see fairly well out to the sides, but hardly at all behind without turning the whole body. How do I make it clear you are not seeing behind you? I want the map to turn so the player is always facing up. Part of the game is to experience kind of a maze and the player should be able to lose track of North. How can I turn the map rather than the player avatar without causing confusion?

• Can I virtualize a pre-installed Windows 7?

  I am considering buying a new computer with Windows 7 (64-bit) pre-installed. Would it be possible to install Ubuntu (preferably 64-bit) dual-boot on such a machine, and then, using VirtualBox / VMWare, etc. under Ubuntu, make a virtual machine that "points to" the existing Windows 7 OS (without making a copy of it)? Just to be clear... at the end of this process: I would have a machine that dual-booted both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Ubuntu (64-bit). If I choose to boot Ubuntu, I would then have the possibility of running a visualization of Windows 7 within Ubuntu. There would only be 1 copy of Windows 7 on the hard disk.

• How to Do htaccess 301 Redirect from Old Filename Pattern to New Filename Pattern?

  I have a bunch of old files prefixed with "old-" (e.g. "old-abcde.php"). I need an htaccess rule to set up a 301 redirect so that any request for a file starting with "old-" goes to its corresponding new version (e.g. "abcde.php"). To be clear, I have many files, not just one, so I can't do a literal filename match. I basically just need to strip off the "old-" from request and redirect to the version without it. I know I probably just need a simple regular expression, but I'm not good at writing them. Can anyone provide assistance?

• Is there any complications or side effects for changing final field access/visibility modifier from private to protected?

  I have a private final field in one class and then I want to address that field in a subclass. I want to change field access/visibility modifier from private to protected, so I don't have to call getField() method from subclass and I can instead address that field directly (which is more clear and cohessive). Will there be any side effects or complications if I change private to protected for a final field? UPDATE: from logical point of view, it's obvious that descendant should be able to directly access all predecessor fields, right? But there are certain constraints that are imposed on private final fields by JVM, like 100% initialization guarantee after construction phase(useful for concurrency) and so on. So I would like to know, by changing from private to protected, won't that or any other constraints be compromised?

  It took me a while to find out that with ubuntu-one I can sync only folders in my home-folder. On all other folders the ubuntu-one - option is available in preferences, but the actual actions are greyed out. the ubuntu-faq is quite clear on that: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ/CanISyncAFolderOutsideMyHomeFolder But I actually wonder why and if this is going to change and if there is a trick around it (an other one than setting my home to / ;) ) I personally dont have any important data in my home-folder other than the program-configs. See this question.) so that instead of users seeing addresses like labouseur.com/course-compilers.html they can instead see and use simply labouseur.com/course-compilers (Even better, maybe I should restructure that so that it's courses/compilers.) • Fixing a bug that has never caused a problem until now.

  I recently made a change that caused some code to be run far more often than it used to. This lead to the discovery of a bug. This bug had the potential to happen any time that code was run but because it was run so seldom it never surfaced. When I brought this to the lead developer's attention he wanted me to undo the change that exposed the bug rather than fix the bug quoting the adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Its clear to me that we were just lucky up until now but he won't listen to reason. Should I fix it anyway? Update The lead technically doesn't have any authority over me. Just tenure. He's been the sole developer on the project for a number of years until a year ago and I think he doesn't take constructive criticism very well. For what's worth, I didn't criticize him I just pointed out that just because the bug never showed up didn't mean it wasn't there.

• Screen tearing (very noticable during video playback) with HD3000 AND HD Radeon 6630m

  I did not have this issue with Ubuntu 11.10. Well, to be clear, I did, but it was easily remedied with compiz workarounds. I have tried both the propriety and open source ati drivers, and the intel HD 3000 (as far as I know) should be part of the Kernel already. So I am pretty much 100% stumped given my general lack of Linux knowledge. I really enjoy this OS, would hate to have to return to Windows (read: HATE) because of something as trivial as video playback. Some details: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e520 Intel HD 3000/AMD HD Radeon 6630m Ubuntu 12.04 64bit.

  Prologue In the previous chapter we have see how to create DB records with EF, now we are going to Some Questions about Oracle.   ORACLE One characteristic from SQL Server that differs from Oracle is “Identity”. To all that has not worked with SQL Server, this property, that applies to Integer Columns, lets indicate that there is auto increment columns, by that way it will be filled automatically, without writing it on the insert statement. In EF with SQL Server, the properties whose match with Identity columns, will be filled after invoking SaveChanges method. In Oracle DB, there is no Identity Property, but there is something similar. Sequences Sequences are DB objects, that allow to create auto increment, but there are not related directly to a Table. The syntax is as follows: name, min value, max value and begin value. 1: CREATE SEQUENCE nombre_secuencia 2: INCREMENT BY numero_incremento 3: START WITH numero_por_el_que_empezara 4: MAXVALUE valor_maximo | NOMAXVALUE 5: MINVALUE valor_minimo | NOMINVALUE 6: CYCLE | NOCYCLE 7: ORDER | NOORDER 8:    How to get sequence value? It takes the connection strings from the App settings, removing the meta data, that was created by VS when generated the EF model. And then, returns the next value from the Sequence. The next value of a Sequence is unique, by that, when some concurrent users are going to create records in the DB using the sequence will not get duplicates. This is my own implementation, I know that it could be several ways to do and better ways. If I find any other way, I promise to post it. • How to build list of items available in World of Warcraft?

  There are a number of non-Blizzard sites that show a complete list of available items in World of Warcraft (such as wowhead, etc). I would like to know the best (easiest) way to compile a similar list. I believe some sites are based on user-entered input, which I would like to avoid. Looking at the lua API, it seems that there are functions to get a list of items, but it's not clear if I can just download everything (I remember a reference to throttling somewhere, can't find it now). Does anyone have code samples that would do this, or links to source? Also, Eve Online has made a database of items available (and I do mean SQL database file for download, not the Armory) - is there anything similar for Wow? I'm just looking for the names and stats, not the graphic icons.

• How is Pash licensed?

  Pash is an open source reimplementation of Windows PowerShell. It was released in 2008, and has been idle since then. I would like to take up the mantle. It's not clear what the license is. There is no LICENSE file or license details in the code. The only reference to a license I can find is on this page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pash/ where it says: "License: BSD License, GNU General Public License (GPL)" But I'm not sure if I can take that as authoritative. I have tried to contact the author but he has not responded. I would hate to proceed with this project and later discover that I am violating a license, and have the project crippled as a result.
