  Can the browser feature of contrl+F to find text be integrated with text in popup windows. I'd like to have some scientific reference information given when someone hovers over a species name in a web page. Generating the popup, tooltip style text is no problem, the problem is that anyone using Ctrl+F won't be able to find it, or if I position the text out of view when not required, it will be found but be invisible. The same sort of effect applies to "accordion" style expanding text areas. I'm looking for some sort of event generated when find is highlighting a result.

  I have a simple cpp file which uses GIO. • When I make a database change, how do I know what needs to be removed and readded to the LinqToSql O

  For example, I alter a column in a table to be not null from null. I need to then delete and readd the table. That part is pretty clear. What about views, functions, and stored procedures that access the table, especially that column in the table? I've tried running diffs against the files generated by SQLMetal with some limited success, but even with that it's fairly unclear. I know there is at least one commercial tool out there that claims to address this problem, but I am looking for something free. How are people dealing with this issue?

• UINavigationController navigation stack problems in Landscape Mode

  I have a iPhone application that I am currently converting to a Universal Binary to work with the iPad. I have successfully implemented everything I need in terms of layout so that full landscape functionality is now supported in my app (previously I primarily used portrait mode to display content). But, I have one strange problem, and it ONLY occurs in landscape mode: when I push a view controller onto the stack, it takes two taps on the back button to return to the previous view controller!!! The first tap shows a blank view, but with the same name on the left-side back navigation button, the second tap takes the controller back to previous view like it should. I don't have an iPad to test, so I am relying on the simulator. The problem does not show up on the iPhone and doesn't show up if you rotate back to portrait mode. My app consists of a tabbarcontroller with navigation controllers loaded for its vc's: //application delegate - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application //.... • How to detect code duplication during development ?

  We have a fairly large code base, 400K LOC of C++, and code duplication is something of a problem. Are there any tools which can effectively detect duplicated blocks of code? Ideally this would be something that developers could use during development rather than just run occasionally to see where the problems are. It would also be nice if we could integrate such a tool with CruiseControl to give a report after each check in. I had a look at Duploc some time ago, it showed a nice graph but requires a smalltalk environment to use it, which makes running it automatically rather difficult. Free tools would be nice, but if there are some good commercial tools I would also be interested.

• iCloud + Storage of media in iPhone Documents folder

  I, like many developers, got an email from Apple recently that stated we should move our data from the documents directory into another folder to permit more streamlined backup to iCloud. In recent testing it appears that [your app] stores a fair amount of data in its Documents folder. Since iCloud backups are performed daily over Wi-Fi for each user's iOS device, it's important to ensure the best possible user experience by minimizing the amount of data being stored by your app. Marco Arment, of instapaper fame, has a good take on the issue, which is that the recommended location for storing downloadable files is in /Library/Caches. However, the problem is that both /tmp and /Caches can be 'cleaned' anytime the OS decides that the device is running low on storage. If your app is cleaned then the data downloaded by your app and stored by your user is gone. Naturally, the user will blame you and not Apple. What to do?

• Possible uncommitted transactions causing "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired" erro

  My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read comments about increasing the timeout period but I've also read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application. I'll provide the code I'm working with and there is an IF statement in there that I was a little iffy about but it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I'll just go over what's going on here, there is a list of objects to update or add into the database. New objects created in the application are given an ID of 0 while existing objects have their own ID's generated from the DB. If the user chooses to delete some objects, their IDs are stored in a separate list of Integers. Once the user is ready to save their changes, the two lists are passed into this method. By use of the IF statement, objects with ID of 0 are added (using the Add stored procedure) and those objects with non-zero IDs are updated (using the Update stored procedure). After all this, a FOR loop goes through all the integers in the "removal" list and uses the Delete stored procedure to remove them. A transaction is used for all this.   Are there any wrappers to any of the other PDF generating packages for PHP that provide API compatibility with PDFlib? Our company has been generating PDFs from PHP using PDFlib for many years, but have not upgraded since version 5. Now that we are upgrading some servers, we need either upgrade or find a replacement. I'd like to replace PDFlib with an open-source product that allows commercial use. However, we (foolishly, perhaps) didn't write our own wrapper around PDFlib the first time around, and have many, many lines of code that would need to be changed and tested. I realize I could write my own wrapper, but I find it surprising that my searching thus far has yielded no-one else who has done the same.

  How can I check if two System.Drawing.Color structures represent the same color in 16 bit color depth (or generally based on the value of Screen.PrimaryScreen.BitsPerPixel)? Let's say I set Form.TransparencyKey to Value1 (of Color type), I want to check that when the user selects a new background color for the form (Value2), I don't set the entire form transparent. On 32bit color depth screens I simply compare the two values: if (Value1 == Value2) However, this does not work on 16bit color depth screens, as more Color values for the Value2 would represent the same actual 16bit color as Value1, as I found out the hard way.

• json-framework error in iPhone static library

  I have an iPhone app that uses the json-framework. I moved some of the code, including the json-framework source, from the main project to a static library. When I did this, the json-framework stopped getting compiled into the binary (double checked with class dump). This causes a nasty error: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSCFString JSONValue]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x43897f0' Everything else in the static library continues to function properly.

• OpenLayers: Raise event when map is zoomed or moved by user

  I'm using OpenLayers to display OpenStreetMap maps. (Though, I'd assume this should be general enough to work for any map product...) I'm displaying some very sophisticated vector overlays, and the amount and resolution of the features I'm returning from the server via GeoJSON to overlay has proven too much for many computers. What I'd like to do now instead is to only send data befitting the resolution of the current zoom, and fitting the current view port. This should be relatively easy to do using the GetResolution and CalculateBounds methods on the Map object. However, I don't know when to call these methods because I can't find a way to register a function to be called when the user pans the map (changing the view port) or zooms the map (changing the resolution and view port). How can I get a callback when the user pans or zooms the map?

• PHP get "Application Root" in Xampp on Windows correctly

  Hi all: I found this thread on StackOverflow about how to get the "Application Root" from inside my web app. However, most of the approaches suggested in that thread can hardly be applied to my Xampp on Windows. Say, I've got a "common.php" which stays inside my web app's app directory: / /app/common.php /protected/index.php In my common.php, what I've got is like this: define('DOCROOT', $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']); define('ABSPATH', dirname(__FILE__)); define('COMMONSCRIPT', $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']); After I required the common.php inside the /protected/index.php, I found this: C:/xampp/htdocs //<== echo DOCROOT; C:\xampp\htdocs\comic\app //<== echo ABSPATH /comic/protected/index.php //<== echo COMMONSCRIPT So the most troublesome part is the path delimiters are not universal, plus, it seems all superglobals from the $_SERVER[] asso array, such as $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'], are relative to the "caller" script, not the "callee" script. It seems that I can only rely on dirname(__FILE__) to make sure this always returns an absolute path to the common.php file. I can certainly parse the returning values from DOCROOT and ABSPATH and then calculate the correct "application root". For instance, I can compare the parts after htdocs and substitute all backslashes with slashes to get a unix-like path I wonder is this the right way to handle this? What if I deploy my web app on a LAMP environment? would this environment-dependent approach bomb me out? I have used some PHP frameworks such as CakePHP and CodeIgniter, to be frank, They just work on either LAMP or WAMP, but I am not sure how they approached such a elegant solution. I'm already considering moving away from the singleton model, but is there anything wrong with my approach? Is there an explanation for this behavior and a way out of it?

• "Replay" the steps needed to recreate an error

  I am going to create a typical business application that will be used by a few hundred consultants. Normally, the consultants would be presented with an error message with a standard text. As the application will be a complicated one with lots of changes being made to it constantly I would like the following: When an error message is presented, the user has the option to "send" the error message to the developers. The developers should be able to open the incoming file in i.e. Eclipse and debug the steps of the last 10 minutes of work step by step (one line at a time if they want to). Everything should be transparent, meaning that they for example should be able to see the return values of calls to the database. Are there any solutions that offer such functionality today, my preferred language is Python or also Java. I know that there will be a huge performance hit because of such functionality, but that is acceptable as this kind of software is not performance sensitive. It would be VERY nice if the database also had a cronology so that one could query the database for values that existed at the exact time that a specific line of code was run in the application, leading up to the bug.
