• Backup Linux Root Partition (Fedora 12)

  I setup my partition scheme to have an extra partition the size of my / partion. I have a separate home directory partition. Essentially, I will be doing things that might make my OS unstable so I'd like to backup the OS state but without bothering my home directory. Can I just backup (maybe with dd?) my root partition to another partition on the HDD? I know to restore it I would have to boot up with a livecd or something and do the reverse procedure. I want this to be as simple and require the least amount of external hardware as possible.

• How would I put together a site requiring several TB? [closed]

  Lets say I have a site with unmetered 100MBPS bandwidth (i assume its bits?) and the ram i require. Most plans i see offer HDD that hold 250gb and 1TB. But what happens if i compile/generate enough data that i require 10tb or 25tb? (I'd likely have two servers but...) I wouldn't be serving all of that data (well not to the public) so CDN wouldn't make sense. What do i do in this scenario? Do I need to get a custom plan from a hosting provider? (if so how do i find them?) Are there services that allow me to mount remote drives (that sounds wrong unless its a CDN so maybe not). Are there host that deals specifically with unmetered bandwidth and provides lots of disk space? Math says ~1TB is the most i'll ever need but if i happen to need more i'd like to know my options.

I want to specify OS/RAM/HDD size/CD drive/screen resolution/battery life. I have found several sites so far where I can specify everything except battery life. Does such a site exist?   I had a general question about streaming videos online; in particular, on YouTube. What really is required to smoothly stream videos at 360p or 480p? Then for that HD goodness, what really allows a computer to smoothly stream 720p and 1080p? I'm not too sure whether it's to do with the CPU (speed, # cores, cache size), GPU (chipset, VRAM, memory type) or even HDD (IDE vs SATA). What contributes to the ability to stream regular videos and, furthermore, high-definition videos online?

  I accidentally formatted my Drive D that contained all my Backups and Documents. I separated my files to my Drive D hoping I will not harm my files. Since I use Acronis Recovery to Install a new OS with some pre-installed application to my HDD I didn't realize I also formated/erase my Drive D. Now my drive D is unpartitioned. I am really in really in deep trouble and would need some urgent help, Please recommend a Software that at least can restore my Old Drive that contained my files. I'm assuming most of you think this is a duplicate of some old questions here, But I'm not looking for data recovery, I need to recover the whole partition with the files. I used to use "Recuva" but It only recovers files not the whole folders with the files in it. Please advice. Thank You!

• Electricity in VAIO laptop ports while plugged in

  I have VAIO E series (SVE) laptop. While charger plugged in, touching VGA/HDMI/USB port metal casing gives me burning sensation. So, i checked it with voltmeter and i found that while plugged in there is presences of DC +1.0 V. Same case with my friend's VAIO E Series (VPCEH). Service center says this is normal. But i do not believe them as it is not the case with Dell Inspiron. Please let me know if you are facing same problem with VAIO and is it hazardous to devices which i connect to these ports (like HDD, LED, etc)?

• Micro sound breaks/interrupts on Windows 7

  Hello all, I've been experiencing strange behavior recently. When listening to mp3 or watching movie or whatever that uses sound, I get micro breaks in sound. It's like it hangs or cuts a fragment for about 0.5s. When I start OS, it's ok, but as time passes it gets worse, to the extent that music is unlistenable being interrupted every 2 seconds. I haven't found any relevance between this behavior and hardware usage, I don't think it's directly related to HDD (or it might be but with significant delay). I have updated soundcard drivers and it didn't help a lot. My system is Windows 7, computer is simple HP laptop, nx7300-Ru374ES with WD Caviar Scorpio Blue hard drive inside and integrated soundcard on it (I can check the model later if it's important). Did anybody encounter such problem ? Maybe it's a common thing on Windows 7 or someone knows how to solve it? Thanks in advance.

• How can I be sure that the motherboard is dead and it's not another issue?

  So I have and old computer with and Intel D101GGC motherboard and a pentium 4 cpu and award bios, with a long repeating beep and not passing POST. I tried: RAM checking, they are good and working on other computers Replacing the PSU with a tested one, and still having the same issue I assumed that the CPU is dead and tested 2 others they are both Celeron D processors I also tested the CPU of this computer on another one and it's working fine I also tried it without RAM and still have the same long beep I did all this after disconnecting all the other hardware like HDD and DVD drives. The only time I didn't get any beeps is after removing the CPU I don't know if the processor is needed for the beeps to work. So My questions are: is it normal to not get any beeps if we don't have a CPU installed ? am I missing something or is the motherboard dead ? and thanks in advance.

The Google chrome browser will not start any more and after an hour of using computer he gets some sort of blue screen saying that memory is being dumped. I don't want to format the hdd and reinstall at this time. Can I salvage the machine by some anti virus? Questions: 1. How do I detect what kind of virus do I have? 2. • laptop does not boot

  I have hp probook 4520s lap. But now it does not boot. When I press switch on button fans are working but it shows black screen. HDD light just blink one or two times when start but it will not continue. And usually web cam light should blink one time when startup but it doesn't. I connect to different monitor but couldn't see a output. This lap bought 3 months before but it doesn't have international warranty. Therefore I can not do anything. If someone can provide any clue or suggestion that what happened and what should I do, appreciated. thank you.

• Strange performance from RAID5 using WD RE4 disks

  I've noticed a bit of a performance issue with some WD RE4 drives I'm using under AMD's hardware RAID solution. First a bit of background: Environment: Windows 7 home premium x64 HDD's: 3x 1TB WD Raid Edition 4 in a RAID 5 setup with 128 kbyte stripe (2TB usable space) Testing Tool: HD Tune, process set to "High Priority" Processor: AMD Phenom II x6 1100T Ram: 16GB DDR3/1600mhz Motherboard: MSI 970A-G45 The image below pretty much depicts the issue I'm having. Every test has the same thing, a period of similar length where the performance drops to a few megabytes a second. This can't be a TLER issue as the purpose of RE4's is to work around that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How to securely delete files stored on a SSD?

  From a (very long, but definitely worth to read) article on SSDs: When you delete a file in your OS, there is no reaction from either a hard drive or SSD. It isn’t until you overwrite the sector (on a hard drive) or page (on a SSD) that you actually lose the data. File recovery programs use this property to their advantage and that’s how they help you recover deleted files. The key distinction between HDDs and SSDs however is what happens when you overwrite a file. While a HDD can simply write the new data to the same sector, a SSD will allocate a new (or previously used) page for the overwritten data. The page that contains the now invalid data will simply be marked as invalid and at some point it’ll get erased. So, what would be the best way to securely erase files stored on a SSD? Overwriting with random data as we are used to from hard disks (e.g. using the "shred" utility) won't work unless you overwrite the WHOLE drive...

  I have setup a subdomain to proxy my plesk panel, but when saving pages I am getting 502 Bad Gateway error instead of a completion message. I am running CentOS 6. • Linux software RAID 10 implementation

  Hello there! I don't want to force anybody to make it on behalf of me but trust me: i've looked hundreds of sites and i can't find a good starting point for this. I have 4x500Gb HDD's which i want to set up in RAID 10. The most promising description is here, but it's a little old and unclear for me, above all i prefer Debian over Ubuntu (i know there are slight or no differences). Is it possible to build RAID 10 with Debian's installer or i need to build RAID 1 first in the installer then use mdadm later? • Fujitsu Siemens V6535 laptop doesn't wake up - crash when going into standby?

  I'm having trouble with my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens model V6535). It runs Windows 7, and after I upgraded from Vista I've noticed something that makes me really angry. When my laptop goes into Standby, the power LED changes to red and starts blinking (standby mode). When I push the power button to wake it up it, the blinking LED changes to green but nothing else happens. Nothing on the display, no HDD sound. When I press the power button for a few seconds and then try turn it on again, it doesn't display anything. I have to unplug the charger, shut it off, and power it on again without the power cable. Then it starts working. A few days ago I upgraded the BIOS to the newest version, but it doesn't help. Does anyone have any idea what can be wrong?

But just found out that recently that I already have 2x2GB installed and should be 4GB in total. When I looked at the properties of my computer, It said "Installed Memory 2GB". • Simple queries occasionally running very slowly

  I have some very simple queries that occasionally run very slowly. The table viewed_sites has about 10 - 20 rows. Running EXPLAIN ANALYZE always gives a runtime of less than 3 milliseconds. When the query is run automatically (every 10 seconds) it occasionally takes over a second to run. The query: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') The table: CREATE TABLE viewed_sites ( site_id character varying(4) NOT NULL, last_viewed timestamp with time zone DEFAULT now() NOT NULL ); The (occasional) log result: 2010-05-24 15:47:55 UTC LOG: duration: 1044.632 ms statement: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') It's a horribly vague question, but what could be causing this? • Only some motherboards can support faster RAM?

  This is a question relating to one of my builds. Here are the specs: ECS P4VXASD2+ V5.0 motherboard Intel P4 Northwood 2.8 GHz (533 MHz FSB, 512 KB L2) 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Maxtor 300GB IDE HDD 16 MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro AGP OKIA 300W ATX PSU Gigabyte 52x CD-ROM The issue right now is that I'm trying to install Windows XP from the CD drive but the computer randomly restarts partway through installation. My other build was BSODing due to RAM latency errors. This ECS board manual states that memory modules "up to 333 MHz" (i.e. PC2700) is supported. However, I am running PC3200 modules, which is clearly faster than PC2700. Would this be causing the computer from randomly restarting? EDIT 1: I also wanted to mention that my Emachines T2482 is actually running 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM when it should only be supporting PC1600 and PC2100 DDR RAM. Yet there are no issues with it.

• Unable to Boot from USB External Hard Drive

  I recently upgraded my main development machine to Windows 7. This involved wiping out my primary boot drive (Windows XP 64-bit) and starting clean. Before I wiped it, I did a direct disk-to-disk copy to a big external hard drive I have. While I have been able to migrate most of the necessary files without any problems, I was wanting to boot from it today to check a few settings. I plugged in the hard drive, rebooted, changed the BIOS to boot from USB-HDD first. But, no mattter what I do, it always boots from my primary drive to Windows 7. I do not see any kind of error message or anything. How can I boot to Windows XP 64-bit on this external hard drive?

Recently i moved to Dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu, with a storage partition for all my files where both operating systems could access them. • Click sound from computer when shut down

  Hi, I build my new computer yesterday and I noticed, when computer is shut down, I mean the exact time its looses power from PSU, relativelly loud CLICK sound occurs. Please does anyone knows from where? I think MB, SSD, VGA, CPU nor coolers are not cousing this. I would guess maybe Samsung 1TB HDD (maybe when heads go back to LZ) or some hard safety switch or relay in PSU? Or just the MB speaker? (Yes, its actually installed). • Is it possible create a 4TB bootable partition in the x86 edition of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise?

  I'd like to find out if there is any way to accomplish this, since it would benifit my storage server greatly. I am using a Promise FastTrak 8660 and five Seagate ST31000340NS 1TB drives in a RAID 5 array. I figure that if the x86 ENTERPRISE edition of Server 2003 can handle 64GB of RAM, it should have no problem supporting larger HDD volumes as well. I've read (somewhere...) that the Windows Server operating systems are not limited to the standard 2TB like Windows XP and 2000 are. I'm hoping it's something that just needs to be turned on, similar to the way PAE works for the 4GB RAM limit in x86 servers.

• Windows 7 setup can not find hard disk

  Previously I had an old Seagate barracuda 160GB HDD which got crashed some days before. Yesterday I bought new Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 500GB (ST500DM002). I just replaced the 500GB hard disk with 160GB one leaving data and power cable intact and untouched. And ideally this new hard disk should start functioning. I tried to install Windows 7 with DVD the setup says you don't have any hard disks installed on your machine. I rechecked connection tried with Win XP setup but continued receiving same error. Do I need to do some initialization stuff with hard disk before installing setup? If so how to do it. If not then is there any problem with my newly bought hard disk? Thanks In Advance.
