  • Does stunnel prevent non ssl traffic to "the" specified port?

    So say I have an arbitrary tcp port 12345 and it's non ssl and I want to put stunnel to secure traffic to it. When stunnel is in front of it does it mean that this port is now tls/ssl only? Or can you still connect to it unencrypted? Basically I want to make sure that this port can only be accessed through ssl/tls and stunel and no other way. Clarification I want to make sure only stunnel port is open. Which is answered in the comments that the unsecured port should be fire-walled but preferably bound to localhost.

  • Is it generally better to compress content on the proxy server or the app server?

    We're using an F5 for load balancing and SSL proxying. Behind it we're serving up java applications with Tomcat instances. These are fairly small applications - hundreds of concurrent users. I'd like to compress some of the content, and I'm looking for advice on choosing to configure compression on the F5, or on the tomcat instances. Any big factors in the decision, or is it 6-of-one half-dozen of the other?

    I have to design a network given IPs 146.124.0.0/16 and 146.124.10.0/24. My given requirements are : at least 60 more subnets and maximum 1000 hosts per subnet and use of RIP. I have 3 routers (RA1, RA2, RA3) and 3 subnets (Sales, Logistic and Deposit). I gave WAN1 (RA1-RA3): 146.124.10.0/30, WAN2 (RA2-RA3) : 146.124.10.4/30 and WAN3 (RA1-RA2) : 146.124.10.8/30 and Sales : 146.124.0.0/22, Logistic: 146.124.4.0 and Deposit : 146.124.8.0. When I tried to configure RIP protocol, it didn’t work (I use routerSim 6). What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help please????

  • Block spam by using geoip filter?

    We are looking for a way to be able to block spam based on geographic location by filtering using geoip. context: we rarely have any email correspondence outside of the USA, so we would like to block all incoming email outside the US except for maybe one or two countries. After a little Googling I have found a couple of solutions that may work (or not), but I would like to know what other sysadmins are currently doing or what they would recommend as a solution. Here is what I have found so far: Using PowerDNS and its GeoIP backend it is possible to use geoip for filtering. Normally this backend is used to help distribute load as a kind of load balancing but I dont see why it couldnt be used to kill spam as well? Possibly use the Maxmind lite country database and some scripting to do a similar job. Ideally what I am looking for is a solution that would handle decent load and scale well too...aren't we all! ;) Thanks in advance for your help! :-)

    Suppose a router R1 is directly connected to the following subnets: 10.1.0.0/24 10.1.1.0/24 10.1.2.0/24 10.1.3.0/24 If it is running RIPv1, it will advertise: "i have the network 10.0.0.0" (implicitly understood by receiving RIPv1 routers as 10.0.0.0/8 because the protocol is classful) but suppose we changed the routing protocol to RIPv2 and turned ON auto-summarization. Would it behave in the same way? Would it advertise: "i have the network 10.0.0.0" (advertised WITHOUT subnet mask, and implicitly understood by other routers as 10.0.0.0/8) OR would it auto-summarize in a non classful way like: "i have 10.1.0.0/22" (advertised as network id and subnet mask pair) In other words, does turning on auto-summarization in RIPv2 (or other classless routing protocols) cause it to auto-summarize in a classful manner or simply auto-summarize classlessly to the best of its ability?

  • Apache / PHP Begins to Deny SQL Requests after about 2000

    We have a web page on our server that we use to run administrative scripts. For example, we might run the script "unenrolStudents()" which runs 5,000 SQL SET commands one after another and sets 5000 student entries in an SQL database to unenrolled. However, we are finding that after running a few thousand queries (it is not totally consistent) we will be "locked out" by our server. SYMPTOMS OF LOCKING OUT: - unable to connect to server with winSCP - opening putty with that connection shows a blank screen (no login / pass) - clearing cookies / cache in chrome does NOT fix locking out - other computers in the office ALSO become locked out - locking out can be triggered with a high frequency of requests (10000 in 1 second) or by less over time (10000 in 500 seconds - this will still cause a lockout even though the frequency is much less) We believe this is a security feature of our own Apache. I know we are using Suhosin but I didn't configure it so I don't know. How can I disable this locking effect so that I can confidently run all my SQL requests and they will go through? Has anyone else dealt with this and found workarounds? Thanks DS

For example, 10.0.0.17.55 specifies that the nameserver at 10.0.0.17 uses port 55. But it doesn't work, in /etc/resolv.conf or files under /etc/resolver/. 208.67.222.222.5353 Can I specify non-default port number for nameserver in osx? Update: osx don't use /etc/resolve.conf, but use files under /etc/resolver/. I have wrote a file dev with content '127.0.0.1' to route all dns queries for *.dev domains to a local dns server (127.0.0.). But I cannot specify dns server's port here. (It uses 53 anyway) Maybe there is no way to specify port number under osx?

    Hello. How can I determine the baud rates supported by my serial driver? My driver details (from the Device Manager) follow, but they do not seem very helpful. I am writing an application that is crashing because I am apparently attempting to to set COM1 to an unsupported baud rate, so I need to know which baud rates the driver does support.     Yes, this is a school question, and yes I already know the correct possible answers (supposedly), so I'm not going to bother posting them. Instead, I just want to understand the meaning of this question. I know what class B addresses are, and what valid class B subnet addresses are. I guess one way to define my question is to ask why the answer "255.255.0.0" is wrong, necessarily?     I have a big problem with my laptop, My laptop loss it's connectivity to internet randomly! for Example sometimes it's ok up to 1h but usually the problem occurred after 5 min.     I am trying to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer using terminal utility. The string would be used to trigger something on the remote computer running a program that would listen to that specific port. I used netcat command and tried a few combination of the following but can't seem to get the parameter right.     i want to design a large scale network for an organization with HQ and two branches. i want to use a class A subnet. if i am using the network address 30.0.0.0 for the whole organization how can it be different from another organization company or whatever which is using the same address in another country? now i have the three locations for this organization,so i need 5 subnets [one for the HQ,two for branch A and branch B , one for connecting A to HQ and one for connecting branch B with HQ since i will use central DHCP server at the HQ,is that (number of subnetting) right? is it advisable to use class A or class B for this organization it term of address that will be wasted (let's say it is a university with two branches in two different states)?!

    I am using Juniper J-series routers to emulate a small telco and VPN customer.I need to use OSPF so that the path to each internal subnet is propogated to all PE nodes.The network topology is given below. To achieve this I am planning to run the following commands in UOW-TAU and UOW-HAM. set protocols ospf area 0.0.0.0 interface ge-0/0/0 set protocols ospf area 0.0.0.0 interface lo0.0 Do I need to do any additional configuration in TAU-PE1 and HAM-PE1 routers for it to receive the OSPF paths.? I am a beginner at the routing.Any help is appreciated.
