  • How to store multiple variables from a File Input of unknown size in Java?

    - by AlphaOmegaStrife
    I'm a total beginner with my first programming assignment in Java. For our programming assignment, we will be given a .txt file of students like so: 3 345 Lisa Miller 890238 Y 2 <-(Number of classes) Mathematics MTH345 4 A Physics PHY357 3 B Bill Wilton 798324 N 2 English ENG378 3 B Philosophy PHL534 3 A Dandy Goat 746333 Y 1 History HIS101 3 A" The teacher will give us a .txt file on the day of turning it in with a list of unknown students. My problem is: I have a specific class for turning the data from the file into variables to be used for a different class in printing it to the screen. However, I do not know of a good way to get the variables from the input file for the course numbers, since that number is not predetermined. The only way I can think of to iterate over that unknown amount is using a loop, but that would just overwrite my variables every time. Also, the teacher has requested that we not use any JCL classes (I don't really know what this means.) Sorry if I have done a poor job of explaining this, but I can't think of a better way to conceptualize it. Let me know if I can clarify. Edit: public static void analyzeData() { Scanner inputStream = null; try { inputStream = new Scanner(new FileInputStream("Programming Assignment 1 Data.txt")); } catch (FileNotFoundException e) { System.out.println("File Programming Assignment 1 Data.txt could not be found or opened."); System.exit(0); } int numberOfStudents = inputStream.nextInt(); int tuitionPerHour = inputStream.nextInt(); String firstName = inputStream.next(); String lastname = inputStream.next(); String isTuitionPaid = inputStream.next(); int numberOfCourses = inputStream.nextInt(); String courseName = inputStream.next(); String courseNumber = inputStream.next(); int creditHours = inputStream.nextInt(); String grade = inputStream.next(); To show the methods I am using now, I am just using a Scanner to read from the file and for Scanner inputStream, I am using nextInt() or next() to get variables from the file. Obviously this will not work when I do not know exactly how many classes each student will have.

  • NVIDIA graphics driver in Ubuntu 12.04

    - by user924501
    So my overall goal is that I want to be able to code with CUDA enabled applications. However, upon many days of searching, using installation walkthroughs, and reinstalling countless times after driver failure... I'm now here as a last resort. I cannot get Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to install the NVIDIA 295.59 driver for my GeForce GT 540M NVIDIA graphics card. My main system specs is as follows... (I believe having the Intel processor may be the problem) DELL Laptop XPS L502X Intel® Core™ i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4 Intel Integrated Graphics 64 bit NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Ubuntu 12.04 LTS All other specs are irrelevant unless I forgot something? Methods Tried: aptitude install nvidia-current (all packages) Results: Nothing really happened. Nothing in the additional drivers menu appeared, nor was the NVIDIA X Server settings application allowing access because it thought there was no NVIDIA X Server installed. Downloaded driver from nvidia.com. Set nomodeset in the grub boot menu through /boot/grub/grub.cfg Went to console and turned off lightdm. Installed the driver, but it said the pre-install failed? (mean anything?) Started up lightdm again. Results: NVIDIA X Server settings still didn't notice it. Even tried to do nvidia-xconfig multiple times. I also went into the config file to make sure the driver setting said "nvidia". aptitude install nvidia-173 (all packages) Results: Couldn't find the xorg-video-abi-10 virtual package. It was nowhere to be found and the ubuntu forums everywhere had no answers. Lots of people were having this problem. This is easily done in windows, simply download the driver and debug in visual studio with no problems at all. I'd like clear step-by-step instructions on how I should go about this. I'm relatively new to linux but I can find my way around pretty well so you aren't talking to a straight-up beginner. Also, if you think another thread may have the answer please post because I was having a hard time looking for my specific type of problem. TL;DR I want to have access to my GPU so I can code with CUDA while in Ubuntu 12.04 on my 64 bit laptop that also has Intel integrated graphics on the processor. Solution: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

  • C# - periodic data reading and Thread.Sleep()

    - by CaldonCZE
    Hello, my C# application reads data from special USB device. The data are read as so-called "messages", each of them having 24 bytes. The amount of messages that must be read per second may differ (maximal frequency is quite high, about 700 messages per second), but the application must read them all. The only way to read the messages is by calling function "ReadMessage", that returns one message read from the device. The function is from external DLL and I cannot modify it. My solution: I've got a seperate thread, that is running all the time during the program run and it's only job is to read the messages in cycle. The received messages are then processed in main application thread. The function executed in the "reading thread" is the following: private void ReadingThreadFunction() { int cycleCount; try { while (this.keepReceivingMessages) { cycleCount++; TRxMsg receivedMessage; ReadMessage(devHandle, out receivedMessage); //...do something with the message... } } catch { //... catch exception if reading failed... } } This solution works fine and all messages are correctly received. However, the application consumes too much resources, the CPU of my computer runs at more than 80%. Therefore I'd like to reduce it. Thanks to the "cycleCount" variable I know that the "cycling speed" of the thread is about 40 000 cycles per second. This is unnecessarily too much, since I need to receive maximum 700 messagges/sec. (and the device has buffer for about 100 messages, so the cycle speed can be even a little lower) I tried to reduce the cycle speed by suspending the thread for 1 ms by Thread.Sleep(1); command. Of course, this didn't work and the cycle speed became about 70 cycles/second which was not enough to read all messages. I know that this attempt was silly, that putting the thread to sleep and then waking him up takes much longer than 1 ms. However, I don't know what else to do: Is there some other way how to slow the thread execution down (to reduce CPU consumption) other than Thread.Sleep? Or am I completely wrong and should I use something different for this task instead of Thread, maybe Threading.Timer or ThreadPool? Thanks a lot in advance for all suggestions. This is my first question here and I'm a beginner at using threads, so please excuse me if it's not clear enough.

  • Inlining an array of non-default constructible objects in a C++ class

    - by porgarmingduod
    C++ doesn't allow a class containing an array of items that are not default constructible: class Gordian { public: int member; Gordian(int must_have_variable) : member(must_have_variable) {} }; class Knot { Gordian* pointer_array[8]; // Sure, this works. Gordian inlined_array[8]; // Won't compile. Can't be initialized. }; As even beginner C++ users know, the language guarantees that all members are initialized when constructing a class. And it doesn't trust the user to initialize everything in the constructor - one has to provide valid arguments to the constructors of all members before the body of the constructor even starts. Generally, that's a great idea as far as I'm concerned, but I've come across a situation where it would be a lot easier if I could actually have an array of non-default constructible objects. The obvious solution: Have an array of pointers to the objects. This is not optimal in my case, as I am using shared memory. It would force me to do extra allocation from an already contended resource (that is, the shared memory). The entire reason I want to have the array inlined in the object is to reduce the number of allocations. This is a situation where I would be willing to use a hack, even an ugly one, provided it works. One possible hack I am thinking about would be: class Knot { public: struct dummy { char padding[sizeof(Gordian)]; }; dummy inlined_array[8]; Gordian* get(int index) { return reinterpret_cast<Gordian*>(&inlined_array[index]); } Knot() { for (int x = 0; x != 8; x++) { new (get(x)) Gordian(x*x); } } }; Sure, it compiles, but I'm not exactly an experienced C++ programmer. That is, I couldn't possibly trust my hacks less. So, the questions: 1) Does the hack I came up with seem workable? What are the issues? (I'm mainly concerned with C++0x on newer versions of GCC). 2) Is there a better way to inline an array of non-default constructible objects in a class?

  • What is the best way to connect to an Oracle database to build my own IDE? [closed]

    - by rima
    before answer me plz thinking about the futures of these kind of program and answer me plz. I wanna get some data from oracle server like: 1-get all the function,package,procedure and etc for showing them or drop them & etc... 2-compile my *.sql files,get the result if they have problem & etc... becuz I was beginner in oracle first of all I for solve the second problem I try to connect to sqlPlus by RUN sqlplus and trace the output(I mean,I change the output stream of shell and trace what happend and handle the assigned message to customer. NOW THIS PART SUCCEED. just a little bit I have problem with get all result because the output is asynchronous.any way... [in this case I log in to oracle Server by send argument to the sqlplus by make a process in c#] after that I try to get all function,package or procedure name,but I have problem in speed!so I try to use oracle.DataAccess.dll to connect the database. now I m so confusing about: which way is correct way to build a program that work like Oracle Developer! I do not have any experience for like these program how work. If Your answer is I must use the second way follow this part plz: I search a little bit the Golden,PLedit (Benthic software),I have little bit problem how I must create the connection string?because I thinking about how I can find the host name or port number that oracle work on them?? am I need read the TNSNames.Ora file? IF your answer is I must use the first way follow this part plz: do u have any Idea for how I parse the output?because for example the result of a table is so confusing...[i can handle & program it but I really need someone experience,because the important things to me learn how such software work so nice and with quick response?] All of the has different style in output... If you are not sure Can u help me which book can help me in this way i become expert? becuz for example all the C# write just about how u can connect to DB and the DB books write how u can use this DB program,I looking for a book that give me some Idea how develop an interface for do transaction between these two.not simple send and receive data,for example how write a compiler for them. the language of book is not different for me i know C#,java,VB,sql,Oracle Thanks.

  • Problem in understanding connectSlotsByName() in pyqt???

    - by Jebagnanadas
    Hi all, I couldn't understand the connectSlotsByName() method which is predominently used by pyuic4.. As far the class is single in a PyQt file it's ok since we can use self which will be associated with a single object throughout.. But when we try to use various classes from different files the problem and the need to use connectSlotsByName() arises.. Here's what i encountered which is weird.. I created a stacked widget.. I placed my first widget on it.. It has a button called "Next ". On clicking next it hides the current widget and adds another widget which has the "click me" button.. The problem here is the click event for "click me" button in second is not captured.. It's a minimal example that i can give for my original problem.. Please help me.. This is file No.1..(which has the parent stacked widget and it's first page). On clicking next it adds the second page which has "clickme" button in file2.. from PyQt4 import QtCore, QtGui import file2 class Ui_StackedWidget(QtGui.QStackedWidget): def __init__(self,parent=None): QtGui.QStackedWidget.__init__(self,parent) self.setObjectName("self") self.resize(484, 370) self.setWindowTitle(QtGui.QApplication.translate("self", "stacked widget", None, QtGui.QApplication.UnicodeUTF8)) self.createWidget1() def createWidget1(self): self.page=QtGui.QWidget() self.page.setObjectName("widget1") self.pushButton=QtGui.QPushButton(self.page) self.pushButton.setGeometry(QtCore.QRect(150, 230, 91, 31)) self.pushButton.setText(QtGui.QApplication.translate("self", "Next >", None, QtGui.QApplication.UnicodeUTF8)) self.addWidget(self.page) QtCore.QMetaObject.connectSlotsByName(self.page) QtCore.QObject.connect(self.pushButton,QtCore.SIGNAL('clicked()'),self.showWidget2) def showWidget2(self): self.page.hide() obj=file2.widget2() obj.createWidget2(self) if __name__ == "__main__": import sys app = QtGui.QApplication(sys.argv) ui = Ui_StackedWidget() ui.show() sys.exit(app.exec_()) Here's file2 from PyQt4 import QtGui,QtCore class widget2(): def createWidget2(self,parent): self.page = QtGui.QWidget() self.page.setObjectName("page") self.parent=parent self.groupBox = QtGui.QGroupBox(self.page) self.groupBox.setGeometry(QtCore.QRect(30, 20, 421, 311)) self.groupBox.setObjectName("groupBox") self.groupBox.setTitle(QtGui.QApplication.translate("self", "TestGroupBox", None, QtGui.QApplication.UnicodeUTF8)) self.pushButton = QtGui.QPushButton(self.groupBox) self.pushButton.setGeometry(QtCore.QRect(150, 120, 92, 28)) self.pushButton.setObjectName("pushButton") self.pushButton.setText(QtGui.QApplication.translate("self", "Click Me", None, QtGui.QApplication.UnicodeUTF8)) self.parent.addWidget(self.page) self.parent.setCurrentWidget(self.page) QtCore.QMetaObject.connectSlotsByName(self.page) QtCore.QObject.connect(self.pushButton,QtCore.SIGNAL('clicked()'),self.printMessage) def printMessage(self): print("Hai") Though in both the widgets(i mean pages) QtCore.QMetaObject.connectSlotsByName(self.page) the clicked signal in second dialog isn't getting processed. Thanks in advance.. Might be a beginner question..

  • How do I access the enumerated item with an indexer and assign array string to it for display?

    - by g00p3k
    EDITED: Updated 3/23/09. See rest of post at bottom. I'm still having trouble with the indexer. Anymore help or examples would really help me out. Write a class, MyCourses, that contains an enumeration of all the courses that you are currently taking. This enum should be nested inside of your class MyCourses. Your class should also have an array field that provides a short description (as a String) of each of your courses. Write an indexer that takes one of your enumerated courses as an index and returns the String description of the course. Write a class MyFriends that contains an indexer that provides access to the names of your friends. namespace IT274_Unit4Project { public class MyCourses { // enumeration that contains an enumeration of all the courses that // student is currently enrolled in public enum CourseName {IT274= 0,CS210 = 1} // array field that provides short description for each of classes, // returns string description of the course private String[] courseDescription = {"Intermediate C#: Teaches intermediate elements of C# programming and software design", "Career Development Strategies: Teaches principles for career progression, resume preparation, and overall self anaylsis"}; // indexer that takes one of the enumerated courses as an index // and returns the String description of the course public String this[CourseName index] { get { if (index == 1) return courseDescription[0]; else return courseDescription[1]; } set { if (index == 1) courseDescription[0] = value; else courseDescription[1] = value; } } } }//end public class MyCourses I'm working on this homework project and having trouble understanding the text explaining how to correctly take the accessed value of the enumeration and then apply the string array value to it. Can you please help me understand this? The text we are using is very difficult and poorly written for a beginner to understand, so I'm kind of on my own here. I've got the first parts written, but need some help on the accessing of the enumeration value and assigning, i think i'm close, but don't understand how to properly get and set the values on this. Please do not provide me with direct code answers, unless a MSDN style explanation that is generalized and not specific to my project. ie: public class MyClass { string field1; string field2; //properties public string Value1 get etc... Thanks!

  • OutOfMemoryError loading Bitmap via DefaultHttpClient

    - by Goddchen
    i have a simple problem: Although i'm using sampleSize properly, my code doesn't even reach the BitmapFactorycode, since DefaultHttpClient is already throwing the exception. Here is my code: DefaultHttpClient client = new DefaultHttpClient(); HttpGet request = new HttpGet(mSongInfo.imageLarge); HttpResponse response = client.execute(request); int sampleSize = 1; while (response.getEntity().getContentLength() / sampleSize / sampleSize > 100 * 1024) { sampleSize *= 2; } BitmapFactory.Options options = new BitmapFactory.Options(); options.inSampleSize = sampleSize; final Bitmap bitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeStream(response .getEntity().getContent(), null, options); And here is the exception: 0 java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: (Heap Size=11463KB, Allocated=7623KB, Bitmap Size=9382KB) 1 at org.apache.http.util.ByteArrayBuffer.<init>(ByteArrayBuffer.java:53) 2 at org.apache.http.impl.io.AbstractSessionInputBuffer.init(AbstractSessionInputBuffer.java:82) 3 at org.apache.http.impl.io.SocketInputBuffer.<init>(SocketInputBuffer.java:98) 4 at org.apache.http.impl.SocketHttpClientConnection.createSessionInputBuffer(SocketHttpClientConnection.java:83) 5 at org.apache.http.impl.conn.DefaultClientConnection.createSessionInputBuffer(DefaultClientConnection.java:170) 6 at org.apache.http.impl.SocketHttpClientConnection.bind(SocketHttpClientConnection.java:106) 7 at org.apache.http.impl.conn.DefaultClientConnection.openCompleted(DefaultClientConnection.java:129) 8 at org.apache.http.impl.conn.DefaultClientConnectionOperator.openConnection(DefaultClientConnectionOperator.java:173) 9 at org.apache.http.impl.conn.AbstractPoolEntry.open(AbstractPoolEntry.java:164) 10 at org.apache.http.impl.conn.AbstractPooledConnAdapter.open(AbstractPooledConnAdapter.java:119) 11 at org.apache.http.impl.client.DefaultRequestDirector.execute(DefaultRequestDirector.java:359) 12 at org.apache.http.impl.client.AbstractHttpClient.execute(AbstractHttpClient.java:555) 13 at org.apache.http.impl.client.AbstractHttpClient.execute(AbstractHttpClient.java:487) 14 at org.apache.http.impl.client.AbstractHttpClient.execute(AbstractHttpClient.java:465) 15 at de.goddchen.android.easysongfinder.fragments.SongFragment$1.run(SongFragment.java:79) 16 at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:1027) As you can see, the code doesn't even reach the part where i check the size (Content-Length) of the image and calculate a proper sample size. I wasn't aware that simply calling DefaultHttpClient.execute(...) will already load the complete content into the memory. Am i doing something wrong? What is the right way to first retrieve the content length and then start reading the content from an InputStream? EDIT To avoid common answers that show how to load images from a URL: i already know how to do that, i have also posted the code above, so why do you keep referencing tutorials on that? I explicitly was very clear about the problem: Why is HttpClient.execute(...)already fetching the whole content and storing it in memory instead of providing a proper ÌnputStreamto me? Please don't post any beginner tutorials on how to load aBitmap`from a URL...

  • jqgrid modify data returned from ajax call before display in table

    - by user954211
    I have to display some data that I receive from the server as json object like this {"rowndx":"0","rows":"25","rowstotal":"100","rowsdata":[ ["00","DEVICE001","T0_IHOME","1","***","1","10"], ["01","DEVICE002","NO_DEVICE","1","***","1","10"], ["02","DEVICE003","NO_DEVICE","0","***","1","10"], ..... Before displaying the received data in a table I would like to make changes where necessary adding units to the numbers or replacing the numbers with words (eg 0 -OFF 1- ON) To do this I have associated at the ajax option "success" my encoding function. In this case, however, remains always visible the message "Loading ..." and no other action is permitted. I moved my re-encoding procedure to the "complete" ajax option and this time it seems to work. But I did not understand what was my mistake and I do not know if my procedure can work. This is my table ajax configuration url : "devtbl.json", mtype : "POST", datatype : "json", postData : ...... ajaxGridOptions: { type : 'post', contentType: 'application/json', async : false, complete : DEVparse_serverdata, error : function() { alert('Something bad happened. Stopping');}, }, jsonReader : { root : "tablerows", page : "currentpage", total : "totalpages", records : "totalrecords", cell : "", id : "0", userdata : "userdata", repeatitems : true }, and my coding function function DEVparse_serverdata(js , textStatus) { var jsontablereply = {} ; var rowsxpage_int = parseInt(UB.rowsxpage.DEVtable) ; var jsonreply = jQuery.parseJSON(js.responseText) ; jsontablereply.currentpage = "" + (1 + (parseInt(jsonreply.rowndx) / rowsxpage_int)); jsontablereply.totalpages = "" + parseInt((parseInt(jsonreply.rowstotal) + (rowsxpage_int-1)) / rowsxpage_int) ; jsontablereply.totalrecords = jsonreply.rowstotal; jsontablereply.tablerows = [] ; $.each(jsonreply.rowsdata, function(ndx, row) { var rowarray = [] ; rowarray[0] = row[0] ; rowarray[1] = row[1] ; rowarray[2] = row[2] ; rowarray[3] = row[3] ; rowarray[4] = row[4] ; switch (row[2]) { case "NO_DEVICE": rowarray[5] = "***" ; break ; case "T0_IHOME": rowarray[5] = "T=" + row[5] + "°C" ; break ; } jsontablereply.tablerows[ndx] = rowarray ; }) ; // each jQuery("#DEVtbl")[0].addJSONData(jsontablereply); } (I am a beginner with Jquery my coding style is poor)

  • problem with logout script in php

    - by user225269
    I'm a beginner in php, and I am trying to create a login and logout. But I am having problems in logging out. My logout just calls for the login form which is this: <? session_start(); session_destroy(); ?> <table width="300" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#CCCCCC"> <tr> <form name="form1" method="post" action="checklogin.php"> <td> <table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <tr> <td colspan="3"><strong>Member Login </strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="78">Username</td> <td width="6">:</td> <td width="294"><input name="myusername" type="text" id="myusername"></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Password</td> <td>:</td> <td><input name="mypassword" type="text" id="mypassword"></td> </tr> <tr> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td><input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Login"></td> </tr> </table> </td> </form> </tr> </table> My problem is, when I try to press the back button in the browser. Whoever user is using it can still access what is not supposed to be accessed when a user hasn't logged in. Do I need to add a code on the user page? I have this code on the user page: <? session_start(); if(!session_is_registered(myusername)){ header("location:main_login.php"); } ?> What can you recommend that I would do so that a script will prompt to enter the username and password again when a user clicks on the back button.

  • PHP-OOP extending two classes?

    - by user1292810
    I am very beginner to OOP and now I am trying to write some PHP class to connect with FTP server. class ftpConnect { private $server; private $user; private $password; private $connection_id; private $connection_correct = false; public function __construct($server, $user = "anonymous", $password = "[email protected]") { $this->server = $server; $this->user = $user; $this->password = $password; $this->connection_id = ftp_connect($this->server); $this->connection_correct = ftp_login($this->connection_id, $this->user, $this->password); if ( (!$this->connection_id) || (!$this->connection_correct) ){ echo "Error! Couldn't connect to $this->server"; var_dump($this->connection_id); var_dump($this->connection_correct); return false; } else { echo "Successfully connected to $this->server, user: $this->user"; $this->connection_correct = true; return true; } } } I reckon that body of the class is insignificant at the moment. Main issue is that I have some problems with understanding OOP idea. I wanted to add sending emails every time, when the code is run. I have downloaded PHPMailer Class and extended my class with it: class ftpConnect extends PHPMailer {...} I have added some variables and methods and everything works as expected to that point. I thought: why not to add storing everything in database. Everytime user runs above code, proper information should be stored in database. I could edit my ftpConnect class and add database connecting to the constructor, and some other methods to updating tables. But database connecting and all that stuff could be used by other classes in the future, so it definitely should be implemented in seperate class. But my "main" ftpConnect class already extends one class and could not extend not a single one more. I have no idea how can I resolve this problem. Maybe my ftpConnect class is to complex and I should somehow divide it into couple smaller classes? Any help is much appreciated.

  • Command prompt in debug mode for Eclipse? (OpenCV + Eclipse + Win7)

    - by Tony
    I am a beginner for Eclipse. I now have Eclipse C/C++ IDE with OpenCV library running on Windows 7. So far it works after spending hours trying to get it running. But then I realize that Eclipse does not pop up a command prompt as VS2010 does while debugging. And moreover Eclipse's debug mode is just stuck in there and refuse to output anything. But if the code doesn't involve the OpenCV things it works again. Below is the code I use for testing. It captures images from webcam and output it to the screen. The infinite loop (until you press 'q') makes sure it constantly grabs new inputs from the camera. I browsed through the workspace and run the exe just compiled and it worked flawlessly. So I don't think there's anything wrong in the code (it's an example code anyway In brief, can I just pop up a command prompt window in debug mode? And why is Eclipse console stuck when the code involves some OpenCV functions? #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <tchar.h> #include <cv.h> #include <cxcore.h> #include <highgui.h> #include <iostream> int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[]) { CvCapture *capture = 0; IplImage *frame = 0; int key = 0; /* initialize camera */ capture = cvCaptureFromCAM( 0 ); /* always check */ if ( !capture ) { printf("Cannot open initialize webcam!\n"); return 1; } /* create a window for the video */ cvNamedWindow( "result", CV_WINDOW_AUTOSIZE ); while( key != 'q' ) { /* get a frame */ frame = cvQueryFrame( capture ); /* always check */ if( !frame ) break; /* display current frame */ cvShowImage( "result", frame ); /* exit if user press 'q' */ key = cvWaitKey( 1 ); } /* free memory */ cvDestroyWindow( "result" ); cvReleaseCapture( &capture ); return 0; }

  • mysql search using for loop from php.

    hi, i am a beginner. but I'm practicing a lot for few days with php mysql, and I am trying to use for loop to search an exploded string, one by one from mysql server. Till now I have no results. I'm giving my codes, <?php // Example 1 $var = @$_GET['s'] ; $limit=500; echo " "; echo "$var"; echo " "; $trimmed_array = explode(" ", $var); echo "$trimmed_array[0]"; // piece1 echo " "; $count= count($trimmed_array); echo $count; for($j=0;$j<$count;$j++) { e cho "$trimmed_array[$j]";; echo " "; } echo " "; for($i=0; $i<$count ; $i++){ $query = "select * from book where name like \"%$trimmed_array[$i]%\" order by name"; $numresults=mysql_query($query); $numrows =mysql_num_rows($numresults); if ($numrows == 0) { echo "<h4>Results</h4>"; echo "<p>Sorry, your search: &quot;" . $trimmed_array[i] . "&quot; returned zero results</p>"; } if (empty($s)) { $s=0; } $query .= " limit $s,$limit"; $result = mysql_query($query) or die("Couldn't execute query"); echo "<p>You searched for: &quot;" . $var . "&quot;</p>"; echo "Results<br /><br />"; $count=1; while ($row= mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $name = $row["name"]; $publisher=$row["publisher"]; $total=$row["total"]; $issued=$row["issued"]; $available=$row["available"]; $category=$row["category"]; echo "<table border='1'><tr><td>$count)</td><td>$name&nbsp;</td><td>$publisher&nbsp;</td><td>$total&nbsp;</td><td>$issued&nbsp;</td><td>$available&nbsp;</td><td>$category&nbsp;</td></tr></table>" ; $count++ ; } } ?>

  • How to validate if all check boxes are ticked in jQuery?

    - by Jude
    I am a beginner in jQuery and I was wondering how to validate the form before submission specifically for check boxes. I am creating a simple check list form where my user would tick a check box if he finished that step. What I am planning to do is that, the script would prevent the form submission if there is an "unticked" checkbox and highlight it with a color. Here's my code : <!doctype html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <title>checkbox</title> <style> .error { background-color:#F00; } .valid { background-color:#0F0; } </style> <script type="application/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.8.2.min.js"> </script> <script type="application/javascript"> function validateAll() { $(".tick").change(function(){ if ($('.tick:checked').length == $('.tick').length) { $('#container').removeClass(); $('#container').addClass('error'); } else { $('#container').removeClass(); $('#container').addClass('valid'); } }); } </script> </head> <body> <div id="container"><input class="tick" id="option1" type="checkbox"></div> <div id="container"><input class="tick" id="option1" type="checkbox"></div> <input id="button" type="button" onClick="validateAll();" value="check"> </body> </html> So what I am trying to do here is when the user clicks the button, the script will highlight all the unchecked check box with red and highlight all checked with green. However, my script is not functioning. What is wrong with my script? Any suggestions on a more efficient way to do this?

  • SQL Server Master class winner

    - by Testas
     The winner of the SQL Server MasterClass competition courtesy of the UK SQL Server User Group and SQL Server Magazine!    Steve Hindmarsh     There is still time to register for the seminar yourself at:  www.regonline.co.uk/kimtrippsql     More information about the seminar     Where: Radisson Edwardian Heathrow Hotel, London  When: Thursday 17th June 2010  This one-day MasterClass will focus on many of the top issues companies face when implementing and maintaining a SQL Server-based solution. In the case where a company has no dedicated DBA, IT managers sometimes struggle to keep the data tier performing well and the data available. This can be especially troublesome when the development team is unfamiliar with the affect application design choices have on database performance. The Microsoft SQL Server MasterClass 2010 is presented by Paul S. Randal and Kimberly L. Tripp, two of the most experienced and respected people in the SQL Server world. Together they have over 30 years combined experience working with SQL Server in the field, and on the SQL Server product team itself. This is a unique opportunity to hear them present at a UK event which will: Debunk many of the ingrained misconceptions around SQL Server's behaviour    Show you disaster recovery techniques critical to preserving your company's life-blood - the data    Explain how a common application design pattern can wreak havoc in the database Walk through the top-10 points to follow around operations and maintenance for a well-performing and available data tier! Please Note: Agenda may be subject to change  Sessions Abstracts  KEYNOTE: Bridging the Gap Between Development and Production    Applications are commonly developed with little regard for how design choices will affect performance in production. This is often because developers don't realize the implications of their design on how SQL Server will be able to handle a high workload (e.g. blocking, fragmentation) and/or because there's no full-time trained DBA that can recognize production problems and help educate developers. The keynote sets the stage for the rest of the day. Discussing some of the issues that can arise, explaining how some can be avoided and highlighting some of the features in SQL 2008 that can help developers and DBAs make better use of SQL Server, and troubleshoot when things go wrong.   SESSION ONE: SQL Server Mythbusters  It's amazing how many myths and misconceptions have sprung up and persisted over the years about SQL Server - after many years helping people out on forums, newsgroups, and customer engagements, Paul and Kimberly have heard it all. Are there really non-logged operations? Can interrupting shrinks or rebuilds cause corruption? Can you override the server's MAXDOP setting? Will the server always do a table-scan to get a row count? Many myths lead to poor design choices and inappropriate maintenance practices so these are just a few of many, many myths that Paul and Kimberly will debunk in this fast-paced session on how SQL Server operates and should be managed and maintained.   SESSION TWO: Database Recovery Techniques Demo-Fest  Even if a company has a disaster recovery strategy in place, they need to practice to make sure that the plan will work when a disaster does strike. In this fast-paced demo session Paul and Kimberly will repeatedly do nasty things to databases and then show how they are recovered - demonstrating many techniques that can be used in production for disaster recovery. Not for the faint-hearted!   SESSION THREE: GUIDs: Use, Abuse, and How To Move Forward   Since the addition of the GUID (Microsoft’s implementation of the UUID), my life as a consultant and "tuner" has been busy. I’ve seen databases designed with GUID keys run fairly well with small workloads but completely fall over and fail because they just cannot scale. And, I know why GUIDs are chosen - it simplifies the handling of parent/child rows in your batches so you can reduce round-trips or avoid dealing with identity values. And, yes, sometimes it's even for distributed databases and/or security that GUIDs are chosen. I'm not entirely against ever using a GUID but overusing and abusing GUIDs just has to be stopped! Please, please, please let me give you better solutions and explanations on how to deal with your parent/child rows, round-trips and clustering keys!   SESSION 4: Essential Database Maintenance  In this session, Paul and Kimberly will run you through their top-ten database maintenance recommendations, with a lot of tips and tricks along the way. These are distilled from almost 30 years combined experience working with SQL Server customers and are geared towards making your databases more performant, more available, and more easily managed (to save you time!). Everything in this session will be practical and applicable to a wide variety of databases. Topics covered include: backups, shrinks, fragmentation, statistics, and much more! Focus will be on 2005 but we'll explain some of the key differences for 2000 and 2008 as well. Speaker Biographies     Kimberley L. Tripp Paul and Kimberly are a husband-and-wife team who own and run SQLskills.com, a world-renowned SQL Server consulting and training company. They are both SQL Server MVPs and Microsoft Regional Directors, with over 30 years of combined experience on SQL Server. Paul worked on the SQL Server team for nine years in development and management roles, writing many of the DBCC commands, and ultimately with responsibility for core Storage Engine for SQL Server 2008. Paul writes extensively on his blog (SQLskills.com/blogs/Paul) and for TechNet Magazine, for which he is also a Contributing Editor. Kimberly worked on the SQL Server team in the early 1990s as a tester and writer before leaving to found SQLskills and embrace her passion for teaching and consulting. Kimberly has been a staple at worldwide conferences since she first presented at TechEd in 1996, and she blogs at SQLskills.com/blogs/Kimberly. They have written Microsoft whitepapers and books for SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008, and are regular, top-rated presenters worldwide on database maintenance, high availability, disaster recovery, performance tuning, and SQL Server internals. Together they teach the SQL MCM certification and throughout Microsoft.In their spare time, they like to find frogfish in remote corners of the world.   Speaker Testimonials  "To call them good trainers is an epic understatement. They know how to deliver technical material in ways that illustrate it well. I had to stop Paul at one point and ask him how long it took to build a particular slide because the animations were so good at conveying a hard-to-describe process." "These are not beginner presenters, and they put an extreme amount of preparation and attention to detail into everything that they do. Completely, utterly professional." "When it comes to the instructors themselves, Kimberly and Paul simply have no equal. Not only are they both ultimate authorities, but they have endless enthusiasm about the material, and spot on delivery. If either ever got tired they never showed it, even after going all day and all week. We witnessed countless demos over the course of the week, some extremely involved, multi-step processes, and I can’t recall one that didn’t go the way it was supposed to." "You might think that with this extreme level of skill comes extreme levels of egotism and lack of patience. Nothing could be further from the truth. ... They simply know how to teach, and are approachable, humble, and patient." "The experience Paul and Kimberly have had with real live customers yields a lot more information and things to watch out for than you'd ever get from documentation alone." “Kimberly, I just wanted to send you an email to let you know how awesome you are! I have applied some of your indexing strategies to our website’s homegrown CMS and we are experiencing a significant performance increase. WOW....amazing tips delivered in an exciting way!  Thanks again”

  • How To Remove People and Objects From Photographs In Photoshop

    - by Eric Z Goodnight
    You might think that it’s a complicated process to remove objects from photographs. But really Photoshop makes it quite simple, even when removing all traces of a person from digital photographs. Read on to see just how easy it is. Photoshop was originally created to be an image editing program, and it excels at it. With hardly any Photoshop experience, any beginner can begin removing objects or people from their photos. Have some friends that photobombed an otherwise great pic? Tell them to say their farewells, because here’s how to get rid of them with Photoshop! Tools for Removing Objects Removing an object is not really “magical” work. Your goal is basically to cover up the information you don’t want in an image with information you do want. In this sample image, we want to remove the cigar smoking man, and leave the geisha. Here’s a couple of the tools that can be useful to work with when attempting this kind of task. Clone Stamp and Pattern Stamp Tool: Samples parts of your image from your background, and allows you to paint into your image with your mouse or stylus. Eraser and Brush Tools: Paint flat colors and shapes, and erase cloned layers of image information. Basic, down and dirty photo editing tools. Pen, Quick Selection, Lasso, and Crop tools: Select, isolate, and remove parts of your image with these selection tools. All useful in their own way. Some, like the pen tool, are nightmarishly tough on beginners. Remove a Person with the Clone Stamp Tool (Video) The video above uses the Clone Stamp tool to sample and paint with the background texture. It’s a simple tool to use, although it can be confusing, possibly counter-intuitive. Here’s some pointers, in addition to the video above. Select shortcut key to choose the Clone tool stamp from the Tools Panel. Always create a copy of your background layer before doing heavy edits by right clicking on the background in your Layers Panel and selecting “Duplicate.” Hold with the Clone Tool selected, and click anywhere in your image to sample that area. When you’re sampling an area, your cursor is “Aligned” with your sample area. When you paint, your sample area moves. You can turn the “Aligned” setting off by clicking the in the Options Panel at the top of your screen if you want. Change your brush size and hardness as shown in the video by right-clicking in your image. Use your lasso to copy and paste pieces of your image in order to cover up any parts that seem appropriate. Photoshop Magic with the “Content-Aware Fill” One of the hallmark features of CS5 is the “Content-Aware Fill.” Content aware fill can be an excellent shortcut to removing objects and even people in Photoshop, but it is somewhat limited, and can get confused. Here’s a basic rundown on how it works. Select an object using your Lasso tool, shortcut key . The Lasso works fine as this selection can be rough. Navigate to Edit > Fill, and select “Content-Aware,” as illustrated above, from the pull-down menu. It’s surprisingly simple. After some processing, Photoshop has done the work of removing the object for you. It takes a few moments, and it is not perfect, so be prepared to touch it up with some Copy-Paste, or some Clone stamp action. Content Aware Fill Has Its Limits Keep in mind that the Content Aware Fill is meant to be used with other techniques in mind. It doesn’t always perform perfectly, but can give you a great starting point. Take this image for instance. It is actually plausible to hide this figure and make this image look like he was never there at all. With a selection made with the Lasso tool, navigate to Edit > Fill and select “Content Aware” again. The result is surprisingly good, but as you can see, worthy of some touch up. With a result like this one, you’ll have to get your hands dirty with copy-paste to create believable lines in the background. With many photographs, Content Aware Fill will simply get confused and give you results you won’t be happy with. Additional Touch Up for Bad Background Textures with the Pattern Stamp Tool For the perfectionist, cleaning up the lumpy looking textures that the Clone Stamp can leave is fairly simple using the Pattern Stamp Tool. Sample an piece of your image with your Marquee Tool, shortcut key . Navigate to Edit > Define Pattern to create a new Pattern from your selection. Click OK to continue. Click and hold down on the Clone Stamp tool in your Tools Panel until you can select the Pattern Stamp Tool. Pick your new pattern from the Options at the top of your screen, in the Options Panel. Then simply right click in your image in order to pick as soft a brush as possible to paint with. Paint into your image until your background is as smooth as you want it to be, making your painted out object more and more invisible. If you get lines from your repeated texture, experiment turning the on and off and paint over them. In addition to this, simple use of the Crop Tool, shortcut , can recompose an image, making it look as if it never had another object in it at all. Combine these techniques to find a method that works best for your images. Have questions or comments concerning Graphics, Photos, Filetypes, or Photoshop? • I cut-to-move DCIM folder to ext SD when an auto android OS update popped up b4 I could choose target - Cannot recover 200+ photos

    - by ZeroG
    I was downloading my Exhibit II's DCIM camera folder (with month's of photos inside) to its external SD card, in order to transfer them into my laptop. In my overconfidence, I hurriedly chose cut-to-move (rather than copy-to-move) when KABOOM! —an automatic Android OS update popped up before I could choose the target!!! I figured everything was in cache & calmly tried to go through with the update. But that was not a typically seamless event. It showed downloading icon but hmm… since I rooted the phone it brought the command line up & recovery sequence. But neither Android nor I had yet downloaded any alternate custom ROM Files to internal SD to update from! So were they trying to make me unroot my phone by giving me some bogus update on the fly or just give me a hard time in trying to hand me down an unrooted ROM that I'd have to figure out how to root again? Yes, I know there was that blurb about overwriting a file of the same name but I was trying to shake the darn stubborn update being forced on my phone during this precarious moment. I thought I had frozen or turned off all those auto-updates previously. Anyway, phones are small & fingers are big (sigh)... I tried to reboot into safe mode but the resultant photo file was partially overwritten (200 files had names but Zero bytes in them). I thought maybe it was still hung in cache or deposited somewhere else but I have searched everywhere with file managers. Since I did not have Titanium backing up camera, photo folder or gallery, I cannot recover 200+ photos. Dumb. You can understand my dilemma as I am involved in the arts & although just a camera phone, most of these photos were historic & aesthetic or at least as to subject matter. Photo-ops don't reoccur. I have tried a couple of recovery apps from the market like Search Duplicates & Recover to no avail. I was only able to salvage stuff I'd sent out in messages. I've got several decades in computers & this is such a miserable beginner's piece of bad luck I can't believe it happened to me. They were precious photos! Yes, I turned on Titanium since & yes I even tried USB to laptop recoveries. Being on a MacBookPro I'm trying androidfiletransfer.dmg, but I'd have to upgrade to Peach Sunrise to get above Android 3.0 for that App to recognize the phone via USB & the programmer says installation zeros your data, so that pretty much toasts any secret hidden places where these photos may have been deposited. Don't want to do that & am still trying to find them. They certainly didn't make it to my external SD Card. If any of you techies out there know anything, please help & thanks. Despite decades of being in computing, unfamiliar & ever-changing hard or software can humble even the most seasoned veterans.

  • Premature-Optimization and Performance Anxiety

    - by James Michael Hare
    While writing my post analyzing the new .NET 4 ConcurrentDictionary class (here), I fell into one of the classic blunders that I myself always love to warn about.  After analyzing the differences of time between a Dictionary with locking versus the new ConcurrentDictionary class, I noted that the ConcurrentDictionary was faster with read-heavy multi-threaded operations.  Then, I made the classic blunder of thinking that because the original Dictionary with locking was faster for those write-heavy uses, it was the best choice for those types of tasks.  In short, I fell into the premature-optimization anti-pattern. Basically, the premature-optimization anti-pattern is when a developer is coding very early for a perceived (whether rightly-or-wrongly) performance gain and sacrificing good design and maintainability in the process.  At best, the performance gains are usually negligible and at worst, can either negatively impact performance, or can degrade maintainability so much that time to market suffers or the code becomes very fragile due to the complexity. Keep in mind the distinction above.  I'm not talking about valid performance decisions.  There are decisions one should make when designing and writing an application that are valid performance decisions.  Examples of this are knowing the best data structures for a given situation (Dictionary versus List, for example) and choosing performance algorithms (linear search vs. binary search).  But these in my mind are macro optimizations.  The error is not in deciding to use a better data structure or algorithm, the anti-pattern as stated above is when you attempt to over-optimize early on in such a way that it sacrifices maintainability. In my case, I was actually considering trading the safety and maintainability gains of the ConcurrentDictionary (no locking required) for a slight performance gain by using the Dictionary with locking.  This would have been a mistake as I would be trading maintainability (ConcurrentDictionary requires no locking which helps readability) and safety (ConcurrentDictionary is safe for iteration even while being modified and you don't risk the developer locking incorrectly) -- and I fell for it even when I knew to watch out for it.  I think in my case, and it may be true for others as well, a large part of it was due to the time I was trained as a developer.  I began college in in the 90s when C and C++ was king and hardware speed and memory were still relatively priceless commodities and not to be squandered.  In those days, using a long instead of a short could waste precious resources, and as such, we were taught to try to minimize space and favor performance.  This is why in many cases such early code-bases were very hard to maintain.  I don't know how many times I heard back then to avoid too many function calls because of the overhead -- and in fact just last year I heard a new hire in the company where I work declare that she didn't want to refactor a long method because of function call overhead.  Now back then, that may have been a valid concern, but with today's modern hardware even if you're calling a trivial method in an extremely tight loop (which chances are the JIT compiler would optimize anyway) the results of removing method calls to speed up performance are negligible for the great majority of applications.  Now, obviously, there are those coding applications where speed is absolutely king (for example drivers, computer games, operating systems) where such sacrifices may be made.  But I would strongly advice against such optimization because of it's cost.  Many folks that are performing an optimization think it's always a win-win.  That they're simply adding speed to the application, what could possibly be wrong with that?  What they don't realize is the cost of their choice.  For every piece of straight-forward code that you obfuscate with performance enhancements, you risk the introduction of bugs in the long term technical debt of the application.  It will become so fragile over time that maintenance will become a nightmare.  I've seen such applications in places I have worked.  There are times I've seen applications where the designer was so obsessed with performance that they even designed their own memory management system for their application to try to squeeze out every ounce of performance.  Unfortunately, the application stability often suffers as a result and it is very difficult for anyone other than the original designer to maintain. I've even seen this recently where I heard a C++ developer bemoaning that in VS2010 the iterators are about twice as slow as they used to be because Microsoft added range checking (probably as part of the 0x standard implementation).  To me this was almost a joke.  Twice as slow sounds bad, but it almost never as bad as you think -- especially if you're gaining safety.  The only time twice is really that much slower is when once was too slow to begin with.  Think about it.  2 minutes is slow as a response time because 1 minute is slow.  But if an iterator takes 1 microsecond to move one position and a new, safer iterator takes 2 microseconds, this is trivial!  The only way you'd ever really notice this would be in iterating a collection just for the sake of iterating (i.e. no other operations).  To my mind, the added safety makes the extra time worth it. Always favor safety and maintainability when you can.  I know it can be a hard habit to break, especially if you started out your career early or in a language such as C where they are very performance conscious.  But in reality, these type of micro-optimizations only end up hurting you in the long run. Remember the two laws of optimization.  I'm not sure where I first heard these, but they are so true: For beginners: Do not optimize. For experts: Do not optimize yet. This is so true.  If you're a beginner, resist the urge to optimize at all costs.  And if you are an expert, delay that decision.  As long as you have chosen the right data structures and algorithms for your task, your performance will probably be more than sufficient.  Chances are it will be network, database, or disk hits that will be your slow-down, not your code.  As they say, 98% of your code's bottleneck is in 2% of your code so premature-optimization may add maintenance and safety debt that won't have any measurable impact.  Instead, code for maintainability and safety, and then, and only then, when you find a true bottleneck, then you should go back and optimize further.

  • Guide to MySQL & NoSQL, Webinar Q&A

Attendees posted a number of great questions to the MySQL developers, serving to provide additional insights into areas like auto-sharding and cross-shard JOINs, replication, performance, client libraries, etc. So I thought it would be useful to post those below, for the benefit of those unable to attend the webinar. Before getting to the Q&A, there are a couple of other resources that maybe useful to those looking at NoSQL capabilities within MySQL: - On-Demand webinar (coming soon!) - Slides used during the webinar - Guide to MySQL and NoSQL whitepaper  - MySQL Cluster demo, including NoSQL interfaces, auto-sharing, high availability, etc.  So here is the Q&A from the event  Q. Where does MySQL Cluster fit in to the CAP theorem? A. MySQL Cluster is flexible. A single Cluster will prefer consistency over availability in the presence of network partitions. A pair of Clusters can be configured to prefer availability over consistency. A full explanation can be found on the MySQL Cluster & CAP Theorem blog post.  Q. Can you configure the number of replicas? (the slide used a replication factor of 1) Yes. A cluster is configured by an .ini file. The option NoOfReplicas sets the number of originals and replicas: 1 = no data redundancy, 2 = one copy etc. Usually there's no benefit in setting it >2. Q. Interestingly most (if not all) of the NoSQL databases recommend having 3 copies of data (the replication factor).    Yes, with configurable quorum based Reads and writes. MySQL Cluster does not need a quorum of replicas online to provide service. Systems that require a quorum need > 2 replicas to be able to tolerate a single failure. Additionally, many NoSQL systems take liberal inspiration from the original GFS paper which described a 3 replica configuration. MySQL Cluster avoids the need for a quorum by using a lightweight arbitrator. You can configure more than 2 replicas, but this is a tradeoff between incrementally improved availability, and linearly increased cost. Q. Can you have cross node group JOINS? Wouldn't that run into the risk of flooding the network? MySQL Cluster 7.2 supports cross nodegroup joins. A full cross-join can require a large amount of data transfer, which may bottleneck on network bandwidth. However, for more selective joins, typically seen with OLTP and light analytic applications, cross node-group joins give a great performance boost and network bandwidth saving over having the MySQL Server perform the join. Q. Are the details of the benchmark available anywhere? According to my calculations it results in approx. 350k ops/sec per processor which is the largest number I've seen lately The details are linked from Mikael Ronstrom's blog The benchmark uses a benchmarking tool we call flexAsynch which runs parallel asynchronous transactions. It involved 100 byte reads, of 25 columns each. Regarding the per-processor ops/s, MySQL Cluster is particularly efficient in terms of throughput/node. It uses lock-free minimal copy message passing internally, and maximizes ID cache reuse. Note also that these are in-memory tables, there is no need to read anything from disk. Q. Is access control (like table) planned to be supported for NoSQL access mode? Currently we have not seen much need for full SQL-like access control (which has always been overkill for web apps and telco apps). So we have no plans, though especially with memcached it is certainly possible to turn-on connection-level access control. But specifically table level controls are not planned. Q. How is the performance of memcached APi with MySQL against memcached+MySQL or any other Object Cache like Ecache with MySQL DB? With the memcache API we generally see a memcached response in less than 1 ms. and a small cluster with one memcached server can handle tens of thousands of operations per second. Q. Can .NET can access MemcachedAPI? Yes, just use a .Net memcache client such as the enyim or BeIT memcache libraries. Q. Is the row level locking applicable when you update a column through memcached API? An update that comes through memcached uses a row lock and then releases it immediately. Memcached operations like "INCREMENT" are actually pushed down to the data nodes. In most cases the locks are not even held long enough for a network round trip. Q. Has anyone published an example using something like PHP? I am assuming that you just use the PHP memcached extension to hook into the memcached API. Is that correct? Not that I'm aware of but absolutely you can use it with php or any of the other drivers Q. For beginner we need more examples. Take a look here for a fully worked example Q. Can I access MySQL using Cobol (Open Cobol) or C and if so where can I find the coding libraries etc? A. There is a cobol implementation that works well with MySQL, but I do not think it is Open Cobol. Also there is a MySQL C client library that is a standard part of every mysql distribution Q. Is there a place to go to find help when testing and/implementing the NoSQL access? If using Cluster then you can use the [email protected] alias or post on the MySQL Cluster forum Q. Are there any white papers on this?  Yes - there is more detail in the MySQL Guide to NoSQL whitepaper If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to use the comments below!

  • Lambda&rsquo;s for .NET made easy&hellip;

    - by mbcrump
    The purpose of my blog is to explain things for a beginner to intermediate c# programmer. I’ve seen several blog post that use lambda expressions always assuming the audience is familiar with them. The purpose of this post is to make them simple and easily understood. Let’s begin with a definition. A lambda expression is an anonymous function that can contain expressions and statements, and can be used to create delegates or expression tree types. So anonymous function… delegates or expression tree types? I don’t get it??? Confused yet?   Lets break this into a few definitions and jump right into the code. anonymous function – is an "inline" statement or expression that can be used wherever a delegate type is expected. delegate - is a type that references a method. Once a delegate is assigned a method, it behaves exactly like that method. The delegate method can be used like any other method, with parameters and a return value. Expression trees - represent code in a tree-like data structure, where each node is an expression, for example, a method call or a binary operation such as x < y.   Don’t worry if this still sounds confusing, lets jump right into the code with a simple 3 line program. We are going to use a Function Delegate (all you need to remember is that this delegate returns a value.) Lambda expressions are used most commonly with the Func and Action delegates, so you will see an example of both of these. Lambda Expression 3 lines. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text;   namespace ConsoleApplication7 {     class Program     {          static void Main(string[] args)         {             Func<int, int> myfunc = x => x *x;             Console.WriteLine(myfunc(6).ToString());             Console.ReadLine();         }       } } Is equivalent to Old way of doing it. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text;   namespace ConsoleApplication7 {     class Program     {          static void Main(string[] args)         {               Console.WriteLine(myFunc(6).ToString());             Console.ReadLine();         }            static int myFunc(int x)          {              return x * x;            }       } } In the example, there is a single parameter, x, and the expression is x*x. I’m going to stop here to make sure you are still with me. A lambda expression is an unnamed method written in place of a delegate instance. In other words, the compiler converts the lambda expression to either a : A delegate instance An expression tree All lambda have the following form: (parameters) => expression or statement block Now look back to the ones we have created. It should start to sink in. Don’t get stuck on the => form, use it as an identifier of a lambda. A Lamba expression can also be written in the following form: Lambda Expression. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text;   namespace ConsoleApplication7 {     class Program     {          static void Main(string[] args)         {             Func<int, int> myFunc = x =>             {                 return x * x;             };               Console.WriteLine(myFunc(6).ToString());             Console.ReadLine();         }       } } This form may be easier to read but consumes more space. Lets try an Action delegate – this delegate does not return a value. Action Delegate example. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text;   namespace ConsoleApplication7 {     class Program     {          static void Main(string[] args)         {             Action<string> myAction = (string x) => { Console.WriteLine(x); };             myAction("michael has made this so easy");                                   Console.ReadLine();         }       } } Lambdas can also capture outer variables (such as the example below) A lambda expression can reference the local variables and parameters of the method in which it’s defined. Outer variables referenced by a lambda expression are called captured variables. Capturing Outer Variables using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text;   namespace ConsoleApplication7 {     class Program     {          static void Main(string[] args)         {             string mike = "Michael";             Action<string> myAction = (string x) => {                 Console.WriteLine("{0}{1}", mike, x);          };             myAction(" has made this so easy");                                   Console.ReadLine();         }       } } Lamba’s can also with a strongly typed list to loop through a collection.   Used w a strongly typed list. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text;   namespace ConsoleApplication7 {     class Program     {          static void Main(string[] args)         {             List<string> list = new List<string>() { "1", "2", "3", "4" };             list.ForEach(s => Console.WriteLine(s));             Console.ReadLine();         }       } } Outputs: 1 2 3 4 I think this will get you started with Lambda’s, as always consult the MSDN documentation for more information. Still confused? Hopefully you are not.

  • Sudo apt-get update -f does not work?

    - by BrianO09
    I am a bit of a noob with Linux. Several months ago I updated to Ubuntu 12.04, then stopped using Ubuntu for a while for a variety of reasons. Now I would like to go back to it, but I have a couple of problems. For one thing, the Software Center will simply not load. I click on the icon, the program comes up, but it never loads, and when I close it I get a "window not responding" message. While reading some threads to fix this issue, the common theme was that the main solution was to update by running: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center However, when I run that, I get the following (long): bcoleary@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center [sudo] password for bcoleary: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: kdelibs-bin : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkjsapi4 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed kdelibs5-plugins : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkjsapi4 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkntlm4 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed kdoctools : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkcmutils4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkde3support4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkpty4 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkdeclarative5 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkdewebkit5 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkdnssd4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkemoticons4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkfile4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkhtml5 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkjsapi4 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkidletime4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkio5 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkjsembed4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkjsapi4 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkmediaplayer4 : Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libknewstuff3-4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libknotifyconfig4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkparts4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libkrosscore4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libktexteditor4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libnepomuk4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libnepomukquery4a : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libnepomukutils4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libplasma3 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed Depends: libthreadweaver4 (= 4:4.8.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. • squid3 auth thru samba using ntlm to AD doesn't work

    - by derty
    some users here are spending to much time exploring the WWW. So big boss whats to get this under control. We use a squid3 just for some security reason and chace benefits. and now i'm trying to set up a new proxy on a different server (Debian 6) Permissions are defined in AC and the squid3 should get the auth thru samba/winbind by using the ntlm protocol. but i'll get all the time Access, denited. it only works by using LDAP but thats not the way i need it. here some log and confs squid access.log 1326878095.784 1 192.168.15.27 TCP_DENIED/407 4049 GET http://at.msn.com/? I tried a lot, really... but i stuck on this problem... i actually i even reinstalled all dependent programs and reconfigured them from default. Group exists and has me in it. Firefox running on the old proxy and i use IE for testing the new one. But i'll get all the time Access-Denited and to be honest i'm quite a beginner, so please don't be to prude. I'll interested in improving, i'll get the information we need to fix this but i started working 2 month ago and got only 1 1/2 year's training and not a single sec. in linux ;)

  • SQLAuthority Book Review – DBA Survivor: Become a Rock Star DBA

    - by pinaldave
    DBA Survivor: Become a Rock Star DBA – Thomas LaRock Link to Amazon Link to Flipkart First of all, I thank all my readers when I wrote that I could not get this book in any local book stores, because they offered me to send a copy of this good book. A very special mention goes to Sripada and Jayesh for they gave so much effort in finding my home address and sending me the hard copy. Before, I did not have the copy of the book, but now I have two of it already! It surprises me how my readers were able to find my home address, which I have not publicly shared. Quick Review: This is indeed a one easy-to-read and fun book. We all work day and night with technology yet we should not forget to show our love and care for our family at home. For our souls that starve for peace and guidance, this one book is the “it” book for all the technology enthusiasts. Though this book was specifically written for DBAs, the reach is not limited to DBAs only because the lessons incorporated in it actually applies to all. This is one of the most motivating technical books I have read. Detailed Review: Let us go over a few questions first: Who wants to be as famous as rockstars in the field of Database Administration? How can one learn what it takes to become a top notch software developer? If you are a beginner in your field, how will you go to next level? Your boss may be very kind or like Dilbert’s Boss, what will you do? How do you keep growing when Eco-system around you does not support you? You are almost at top but there is someone else at the TOP, what do you do and how do you avoid office politics? As a database developer what should be your basic responsibility? and many more… I was able to completely read book in one sitting and I loved it. Before I continue with my opinion, I want to echo the opinion of Kevin Kline who has written the Forward of the book. He has truly suggested that “You hold in your hands a collection of insights and wisdom on the topic of database administration gained through many years of hard-won experience, long nights of study, and direct mentorship under some of the industry’s most talented database professionals and information technology (IT) experts.” Today, IT field is getting bigger and better, while talking about terabytes of the database becomes “more” normal every single day. The gods and demigods of database professionals are taking care of these large scale databases and are carefully maintaining them. In this world, there are only a few beginnings on the first step. There are many experts in different technology fields who are asked to address the issues with databases. There is YOU and ME, who is just new to this work. So we ask ourselves WHERE to begin and HOW to begin. We adore and follow the religion of our rockstars, but oftentimes we really have no idea about their background and their struggles. Every rockstar has his success story which needs to be digested before learning his tricks and tips. This book starts with the same note and teaches the two most important lessons for anybody who wants to be a DBA Rockstar –  to focus on their single goal of learning and to excel the technology. The story starts with three simple guidelines – Get Prepared, Get Trained, Get Certified. Once a person learns the skills, and then, it would be about time that he needs to enrich or to improve those skills you have learned. I am sure that the right opportunity will come finding themselves and they will not have to go run behind it. However, the real challenge for any person is the first day or first week. A new employee, no matter how much experienced he is, sometimes has no clue about what should one do at new job. Chapter 2 and chapter 3 precisely talk about what one should do as soon as the new job begins. It is also written with keeping the fact in focus that each job can be very much different but there are few infrastructure setups and programming concepts are the same. Learning basics of database was really interesting. I like to focus on the roots of any technology. It is important to understand the structure of the database before suggesting what indexes needs to be created, the same way this book covers the most essential knowledge one must learn by most database developers. I think the title of the fourth chapter is my favorite sentence in this book. I can see that I will be saying this again and again in the future – “A Development Server Is a Production Server to a Developer“. I have worked in the software industry for almost 8 years now and I have seen so many developers sitting on their chairs and waiting for instructions from their lead about how to improve the code or what to do the next. When I talk to them, I suggest that the experiment with their server and try various techniques. I think they all should understand that for them, a development server is their production server and needs to pay proper attention to the code from the beginning. There should be NO any inappropriate code from the beginning. One has to fully focus and give their best, if they are not sure they should ask but should do something and stay active. Chapter 5 and 6 talks about two essential skills for any developer and database administration – what are the ethics of developers when they are working with production server and how to support software which is running on the production server. I have met many people who know the theory by heart but when put in front of keyboard they do not know where to start. The first thing they do opening the browser and searching online, instead of opening SQL Server Management Studio. This can very well happen to anybody who is experienced as well. Chapter 5 and 6 addresses that situation as well includes the handy scripts which can solve almost all the basic trouble shooting issues. “Where’s the Buffet?” By far, this is the best chapter in this book. If you have ever met me, you would know that I love food. I think after reading this chapter, I felt Thomas has written this just keeping me in mind. I think there will be many other people who feel the same way, too. Even my wife who read this chapter thought this was specifically written for me. I will not talk any more about this chapter as this is one must read chapter. And of course this is about real ‘FOOD‘. I am an SQL Server Trainer and Consultant and I totally agree with the point made in the chapter 8 of this book. Yes, it says here that what is necessary to train employees and people. Millions of dollars worth the labor is continuously done in the world which has faults and incorrect. Once something goes wrong, very expensive consultant comes in and fixes the problem. This whole cycle which can be stopped and improved if proper training is done. There is plenty of free trainings available as well, if one cannot afford paid training. “Connect. Learn. Share” – I think this is a great summary and bird’s eye view of this book. Networking is the key. Everything which is discussed in this book can be taken to next level if one properly uses this tips and continuously grow with it. Connecting with others, helping learn each other and building the good knowledge sharing environment should be the goal of everyone. Before I end the review I want to share a real experience. I have personally met one DBA who has worked in a single department in a company for so long that when he was put in a different department in his company due to closing that department, he could not adjust and quit the job despite the same people and company around him. Adjusting in the new environment gets much tougher as one person gets more and more experienced. This book precisely addresses the same issue along with their solutions. I just cannot stop comparing the book with my personal journey. I found so many things which are coincidently in the book is written as how we developer and DBA think. I must express special thanks to Thomas for taking time in his personal life and write this book for us. This book is indeed a book for everybody who wants to grow healthy in the tough and competitive environment. - by rizzo0917
    I am a beginner at c++ and figured the only way I am going to learn is to get dirty with some code. I am trying to build a program that connects to a mysql database. I am using g++, on linux. With no ide. I run "make" and this is my error: hello.cpp:38: error: ‘get_driver_instance’ is not a member of ‘sql::mysql’ make: *** [hello.o] Error 1 Here is my code including makefile. Any Help would be great! Thanks in advance ###BEGIN hello.cpp### #include <stdlib.h> #include <iostream> #include <sstream> #include <stdexcept> #include "mysql_connection.h" #include <cppconn/driver.h> #include <cppconn/exception.h> #include <cppconn/resultset.h> #include <cppconn/statement.h> #include <cppconn/prepared_statement.h> #define EXAMPLE_HOST "localhost" #define EXAMPLE_USER "root" #define EXAMPLE_PASS "" #define EXAMPLE_DB "world" using namespace std; using namespace sql::mysql; int main(int argc, const char **argv) { string url(argc >= 2 ? argv[1] : EXAMPLE_HOST); const string user(argc >= 3 ? argv[2] : EXAMPLE_USER); const string pass(argc >= 4 ? argv[3] : EXAMPLE_PASS); const string database(argc >= 5 ? argv[4] : EXAMPLE_DB); cout << "Connector/C++ tutorial framework..." << endl; cout << endl; try { sql::Driver *driver; sql::Connection *con; sql::Statement *stmt; driver = sql::mysql::get_driver_instance(); con = driver->connect("tcp://127.0.0.1:3306", "user", "password"); stmt = con->createStatement(); stmt->execute("USE " EXAMPLE_DB); stmt->execute("DROP TABLE IF EXISTS test"); stmt->execute("CREATE TABLE test(id INT, label CHAR(1))"); stmt->execute("INSERT INTO test(id, label) VALUES (1, 'a')"); delete stmt; delete con; } catch (sql::SQLException &e) { /* The MySQL Connector/C++ throws three different exceptions: - sql::MethodNotImplementedException (derived from sql::SQLException) - sql::InvalidArgumentException (derived from sql::SQLException) - sql::SQLException (derived from std::runtime_error) */ cout << "# ERR: SQLException in " << __FILE__; cout << "(" << __FUNCTION__ << ") on line " << __LINE__ << endl; /* Use what() (derived from std::runtime_error) to fetch the error message */ cout << "# ERR: " << e.what(); cout << " (MySQL error code: " << e.getErrorCode(); cout << ", SQLState: " << e.getSQLState() << " )" << endl; return EXIT_FAILURE; } cout << "Done." << endl; return EXIT_SUCCESS; } ###END hello.cpp### ###BEGIN Make File### SRCS := hello.cpp OBJS := $(SRCS:.cpp=.o) CXXFLAGS := -Wall -pedantic INCPATHS := -I/home/user/mysql-connector/include/ LIBPATHS := -L/home/user/mysql-connector/lib/ -L/home/user/mysql-connector-c/lib/ LIBS := -static -lmysqlclient -mysqlcppconn-static EXE := MyExecutable $(EXE): $(OBJS) $(CXX) $(OBJS) $(LIBPATHS) $(LIBS) -o $@ .cpp.o: $(CXX) $(CXXFLAGS) $(INCPATHS) -c $< -o $@ ###End Makefile###
