PublishingWeb.ExcludeFromNavigation Missing

So recently I have had to make the transition from the SharePoint 2007 codebase to SharePoint 2010 codebase. Needless to say there hasn't been much difficulty in the changeover. However in a set of code that I was playing around with and transitioning I did find one change that might cause some pain to others out there that have been programming against the PublishingWeb object in the Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing namespace. The 2007 snippet of code that work just fine in 2007 looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) { PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web); publishingWeb.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID); publishingWeb.Update(); } The 2010 update to the code looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) { PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web); publishingWeb.Navigation.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID); //--Had to reference the Navigation object. publishingWeb.Update(); } The purpose of the code is to keep a page from showing up on the global or current navigation when it is added to the pages library. However you see that the update to the 2010 codebase actually makes more "object" sense. It specifies that you are technically affecting the Navigation of the Publishing Web, instead of the Publishing Web itself. I know that this isn't a difficult problem to fix, but I thought it would be something quick to help out the general public. Michael

SQL query. An unusual join. DB implemented in sqlite-3

This is essentially a question about constructing an SQL query. The db is implemented with sqlite3. I am a relatively new user of SQL. I have two tables and want to join them in an unusual way. The following is an example to explain the problem. Table 1 (t1): id year name ------------------------- 297 2010 Charles 298 2011 David 300 2010 Peter 301 2011 Richard Table 2 (t2) id year food --------------------------- 296 2009 Bananas 296 2011 Bananas 297 2009 Melon 297 2010 Coffee 297 2012 Cheese 298 2007 Sugar 298 2008 Cereal 298 2012 Chocolate 299 2000 Peas 300 2007 Barley 300 2011 Beans 300 2012 Chickpeas 301 2010 Watermelon I want to join the tables on id and year. The catch is that (1) id must match exactly, but if there is no exact match in Table 2 for the year in Table 1, then I want to choose the year that is the next (lower) available. A selection of the kind that I want to produce would give the following result id year matchyr name food ------------------------------------------------- 297 2010 2010 Charles Coffee 298 2011 2008 David Cereal 300 2010 2007 Peter Barley 301 2011 2010 Richard Watermelon To summarise, id=297 had an exact match for year=2010 given in Table 1, so the corresponding line for id=297, year=2010 is chosen from Table 2. id=298, year=2011 did not have a matching year in Table 2, so the next available year (less than 2011) is chosen. As you can see, I would also like to know what that matched year (whether exactly , or inexactly) actually was. I would very much appreciate (1) an indication (yes/no answer) of whether this is possible to do in SQL alone, or whether I need to look outside SQL, and (2) a solution, if that is not too onerous.

What is a long-term strategy to deal with CPU fan dust in my home office?

There are numerous discussions of CPU overheating and how sometimes this can be corrected by removing the dust from the CPU fan. I have read many of these, but I can't find anyone expressing a long-term strategy to deal with this problem. There are some suggestions here, for example, about how often the inside of the computer should be dusted. But I find this generally unsatisfactory. As it stands, in my rather dusty house (heated by a wood stove, with no central air circulation), I need to vacuum out the CPU fan every 3 to 4 months. At high CPU load, this can make a difference between 65C and 100C. I'm tired of hauling out the vacuum every time I anticipate high CPU load. What steps can I take to deal with this systematically in the long-term? Moving my high CPU load computing to the cloud is not a realistic option. Neither is vacuuming my home office more than once a week! (Details: my computer is on the floor in a Cooler Master HAF922 case, and uses an Intel CPU fan on an i7 chip) EDIT: While this would definitely solve the problem (submerging motherboard in mineral oil), it is a bit of an expensive solution.

Bogus InvalidOperationException (in a DataServiceRequestException)

I am having a hard time with ADO.NET Data Services (formerly code-named Astoria) as it gives me a bogus exception when I try to insert a new entity from the silverlight client and trying in a clean project (the same code) doesn't. In both cases, however, data is correctly inserted into the database. Using Fiddler (an HTTP debugger I could see that there is no problem in the HTTP communication as I will show later in this question. RTS Game Style Application [closed]

My question may seem somewhat odd, but I hope that my specifications will clarify EXACTLY what it is that I am after. I need some help choosing the right tooling for a particular endeavour. My background is in desktop application development and large back-end systems. I have worked primarily on the Microsoft stack using C# and the .Net framework. My goal is to develop a 2D, RTS style, interactive office simulation. The simulation will model various office spaces, office equipment, employees and their interactions with one another. The idea is to abstract the concept of an office completely. Under the hood the application will do many things that are nothing like a game. This includes P2P networking, VPN tunnelling, streaming video, instant messaging, document collaboration, remote screen sharing, file-sharing, virus scanning, VOIP, document scanning, faxing, emailing, distributed computing, content management and much more! A somewhat similar thing has been attempted by IBM, where they created a virtual office in second life. If their attempt was a game, the game-play would be notably horrible, to say the least! The users/players will drive and control my application through the various objects modelled in the simulation. A single application capable of performing all of these various tasks would be a nightmare to navigate for even the most expert user. Using the concept of a game, I can easily separate functionality by assigning them to objects that relate 1-1 with their real world counter-parts. This can greatly simplify computing for novice users, with many added benefits in terms of visibility, transparency of process and centralized configuration. My hope is to make complex computing tasks accessible to all kinds of users and to greatly reduce the cognitive load associated with using the many different utilities and applications inside office settings. The complexity is therefore limited to the complexity of the space in which you find yourself. I want the application to target as many platforms as possible and run on computers that have no accelerated graphics capabilities. The simulation won't contain any of the fancy eye-candy you find in modern games, to the contrary, my "game" will purposefully be clean and simple. The closest thing I could imagine would be an old game like "Theme Hospital" or the first instalment of "The Sims". All the content will be pre-created and not user-generated like Second Life. New functionality will be added via a plugin system. Given my background and nature of my "game", I would like to spend most of my time writing code that does not have to do with the simulated office, as the "game" is really just a glorified application menu. I have done much reading about existing engines, frameworks and tools. I need the help of an experienced game developer who has tried and tested various products over the years who can guide me in the right direction given my very particular needs. I would appreciate any help I can get!

CNAME to another domain fails on some office networks, why?

Our domain "aspenfasteners.com" is hosted by Volusion. We have CNAME records "find" and "search" which point to site indexing accounts on www.picosearch.com. These addresses fail on SOME private office networks which have their own DNS. We suspect the problem comes from Volusion's own name servers, n2.volusion.com and n3.volusion.com. Volusion support on problems this technical is non-existant. We have tried an NSLOOKUP on find.aspenfasteners.com with level 2 debugging info, and we got the results below. Is it possible that the local DNS is recursing to Volusion's name servers, and that while Volusion DOES return the canonical name, they do NOT resolve the address? Can anybody with expertise in this sort of stuff PLEASE look at the NSLOOKUP below and tell me if we are right, because Volusion is giving me absolutely NO support on this topic. SharePoint 2010 release date - is it that important?

There has been lots of excitement in the SharePoint community over the last few days as Microsoft have announced the official release date of SharePoint 2010. May 12th is the date for your diaries (RTM in April.) The twittersphere has been telling everyone for the last few days about this news and there is much excitement. The major conferences this year all seem to have a SharePoint 2010 focus and some are entirely focussed on the new product (e.g. SharePoint Evolution Conference.) Now by all accounts Microsoft have plugged some significant functionality gaps that exist in WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 and provided some exciting new functionality. You don't need me to tell you about these as the MVPs (and other community members) are doing a sterling job, after all that is why Microsoft has MVPs in the first place. Lets get real for a second though as there is a significant investment involved in moving to SharePoint 2010: Firstly you need 64 bit architecture across the board, now for some environments that is no inconsequential hurdle, that's a pretty significant roadblock. The development farm, test farm and UAT farm are all going to require the same infrastructure upgrades. To take advantage of the tooling for SP2010 you will need to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 and your development team is going to require 64 bit hardware/OS too. I would not recommend installing SP 2010 in client installation mode (i.e. for Windows 7) on your developer machines, I would use this for demo machines only. Something that lots of people seem to forget in all their whooping and hollering about the new release is that there is a large amount of end user training going to be required as the browser UI has now adopted the omnipotent ribbon interface and there are other new and more complicated features. SharePoint Designer has also entirely changed in both look and feel and some significant feature changes have taken place. Lest we should forget that some companies have not long upgraded to MOSS 2007 and are yet to see a significant ROI for that project. And the reticence that most companies feel about implementing v1 Microsoft products. This is only the surface of the deeper issues which would be involved in any upgrade process, so I guess I share a small part of the concern voiced by Mark Miller of EndUserSharePoint.com. Is SharePoint 2010 relevant? I don't share this sentiment in its entirety as I firmly believe that all companies should be looking at SharePoint 2010 from day one, however most large scale existing implementations of MOSS 2007 are going to be several years away from a serious upgrade project. So should the conference organisers and the SharePoint community as a whole be a little more understanding of the real world issues? It's easy to get carried away in the excitement of a new product and new tools to play with but there needs to be a focus on the real world issues that most people are facing day to day and at the moment and for the short term future (at the very least the next 12 months) that is fairly and squarely in the WSS 2.0/3.0 and SPS 2003/MOSS 2007 camps. Don't get me wrong, I am very very excited about getting to grips with SharePoint 2010 in the real world and I cannot wait for my first real project to come along, but for now I am just being realistic about the reality for most people who work with SharePoint. I have been spending a lot of time on www.sharepointoverflow.com recently as there is a community of people building up who are committed to answering the real world questions that folks are dealing with every day. I urge you to take a look and either ask or answer some questions direct from the front line of the SharePoint world.

What I've Gained from being a Presenter at Tech Events

I like the message she has stated in this post and I want to share something personal.It was around 2007 that I was seriously looking into leaving the technology field altogether and going back to school. I was calling places like Washington University in Saint Louis and University of Missouri Kansas City asking them how I could go about getting into some type of post graduate medical school program. My entire high school career was based on Medical Explorers and somehow becoming a doctor. I did not want to take my hobby and continue using it as a career mechanism. I was unhappy, but I didn't realize why I was unhappy at the time. It was really a lot of bad things involving the lack of self confidence and self esteem. Overall I was not in a good place and it took me until 2011 to realize that I still was not in a good place in life.So in about April 2007 or so I started this blog that you guys have been reading or occasionally read. I kind of started passively stalking people by reading their blogs in the SharePoint and .Net communities. I also started listening to .Net Rocks & watching videos on their corresponding training for SharePoint, WCF, WF, and a bunch of other technologies. I wanted more knowledge, so someone suggested I go to a user group. I've told this story before about how I met Jeff Julian & John Alexander, so that point I will spare you the details. You know how I got to my first user group presentation and how I started getting involved with events, so I'll also spare those details.The point I want to touch on is that I went out I started speaking and that path I took helped me gain the self confidence and self respect I needed. When I first moved to NYC I couldn't even ride a subway by myself or walk alone without getting lost. Now I feel like I can go out and solve any problem someone throws at me. So you see what Alison states in her blog post is true and I am a great example to that point. I stood in front of 800 or so people at SharePoint Conference in 2011 and spoke about a topic. In 2007 I would have hidden or stuttered the entire time. I have now spoken at over 70 events and user groups. I am a top 25 influencer in my technology. I was a most valued professional for years in a row in Microsoft SharePoint. People are constantly trying to gain my time, so that they can pick my brain for solutions and other life problems. I went from maybe five or six friends to over hundreds of friends in various cities across the globe. I'm not saying it's an instant fame and it doesn't take a ton of work, but I have never looked back once at my life and regretted the choice I made in 2007. It has lead me to a lot of other things in my life, including more positivity and happiness. If anyone ever wants to contact me and pick my brain on a presentation go ahead. If you want me to help you find the best meetup that suits you for that presentation I can try to help too (I might be a little more helpful in the Microsoft or iOS arenas though). The best thing I can state is don't be scared just do it. If you need an audience I can try to pencil it in my schedule. I can't promise anything, but if you are in NYC I can at least try.

Today I had a little spare time during the morning hours and I decided that after checking MVA that I'm going to query the available course material over at Pluralsight. Wow, thanks to fantastic corporations and acquisitions there are lots of courses available. Nicely split by SharePoint version as well as particular interest group. Additionally, I found a couple of online blogs and community sites that I'm going to visit regularly during the next couple of weeks. Takeaway First contact with the 'real stuff' in order to get an idea about software development in Microsoft SharePoint and beyond. Unfortunately and as already expected, the marketing department over at Microsoft seemed to have nothing better to do than to invent new names and baptise literally the same product with every release. Luckily, the release cycles between versions have been three years (roughly) - 2007, 2010, and 2013. Nonetheless, there will be a lot of version-specfic issues to tackle during this learning phase. Especially, when it's about historical expressions like 'WSS'* like I had it yesterday... It's going to be exciting and demanding to catch up with roughly 6-7 years of development and changes. Okay, let's face it. * WSS stands for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 which forms the 'core engine' of SharePoint 2007. Part 1 of Andrew Connell's series on SharePoint 2013 for developers provides a brief history and overview of the various product names and their relation to the actual SharePoint version. Most probably the client development in C# will be using CSOM but of course I'll keep an eye on the REST API, too. JavaScript has quite a momentum since a while and it would a shame to ignore this type of opportunity and possibilities.

The error: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' cannot be used for distributed queries because the provider is configured to run in single-threaded apartment mode. And the answers I'm seeing is a conflict between 64 bit Sql Server and 32 bit Office. Is there a way to run an openrowset on Excel into Sql Server? insert into dbo.FiscalCalendar select * from openrowset('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', 'Excel 12.0 Xml;Database=C:\Users\v-chrha\Desktop\fy11.xlsx;', 'Select * from [Sheet1]')

Can I turn off inline syntax checking in the Office 2003 VBA editor?

As anybody who uses VBA in Office 2003 will know, it has the extremely frustrating tendency to do a syntax check every time you click off a line. For example, if I start writing a line of code, I might go > For Each application In And then think "crap, what's the application collection called?" So I'll hit "page up" to find it, and get (in this case) a "Compile Error". Can I turn this off?

The table (call it A_TABLE) looks like this: ID, Year, Val The idea behind the query is this: for each ID/Year in the table, LEFT JOIN with Year-1, Year-2, and Year-3 (to get 4 years of data) and then return Val for each year. Here's the SQL: SELECT a.ID, a.year AS [Year], a.Val AS VAL, a1.year AS [Year-1], a1.Val AS [VAL-1], a2.year AS [Year-2], a2.Val AS [VAL-2], a3.year AS [Year-3], a3.Val AS [VAL-3] FROM ( ([A_TABLE] AS a LEFT JOIN [A_TABLE] AS a1 ON (a.ID = a1.ID) AND (a.year = a1.year+1)) LEFT JOIN [A_TABLE] AS a2 ON (a.ID = a2.ID) AND (a.year = a2.year+2)) LEFT JOIN [A_TABLE] AS a3 ON (a.ID = a3.ID) AND (a.year = a3.year+3) The problem is that, for past years where there is no data (eg, Year-1), I see "#Error" in the appropriate VAL column (eg, [VAL-1]). The weird thing is, I see the expected "null" in the Year column (eg, [YEAR-1]). Some sample data: ID YEAR VAL Dave 2004 1 Dave 2006 2 Dave 2007 3 Dave 2008 5 Dave 2009 0 outputs like this: ID YEAR VAL YEAR-1 VAL-1 YEAR-2 VAL-2 YEAR-3 VAL-3 Dave 2004 1 #Error #Error #Error Dave 2006 2 #Error 2004 1 #Error Dave 2007 3 2006 2 #Error 2004 1 Dave 2008 5 2007 3 2006 2 #Error Dave 2009 0 2008 5 2007 3 2006 2 Does that make sense? Why am I getting the appropriate NULL val for the non-existent YEARs, but an #Error for the non-existent VALs? (This is Access 2000. Conditional statements like "IIf(a1.val is null, -999, a1.val)" do not seem to do anything.) EDIT: It turns out that the errors are somehow caused by the fact that A_TABLE is actually a query. When I put all the data into an actual table and run the same query, everything shows up as it should. Thanks for the help, everyone.

Updating Windows DNS records from a remote windows DNS server

Does anyone know if it is possible for a windows 2003 DNS server to update the records for a domain so that it contains all the records of a domain of of a remotely based DNS server? Im almost certain that doesn't quite explain the problem so I shall illustrate with an example: We have two offices, both are based about 100 miles apart. One deals with IT (Intranet development etc.) while the other is a call centre that uses the Intranet systems. Currently each office has its own DNS server, with the IT office's and call centre's DNS servers containing entries for intranet site. The difference is that the IT DNS server records point to the various servers that host the Intranet sites (e.g. intranetsite1 - 192.168.1.10, intranetsite2 - 192.168.1.11) while all of the entries in the call centre's DNS point to the IT office's DNS server (intranetsite1 - [it office ip address], intranetsite2 - [it office ip address]). Is there any way that the call centre's DNS server could automatically add all DNS records hosted by the IT office's DNS, translating the IP addresses to the IP address of the IT office?

Can't log in using second domain controller when first DC is unreachable

Hi, We're a small web development company. Our domain has two DCs: a main one (BEEHIVE, 192.168.3.20) in the datacenter and a second one (SPHERE2, 10.0.66.19) in the office. The office is connected to the datacenter via a VPN. We recently had a brief network outage in the office. During this outage, we weren't able to access the domain from our office machines. I had hoped that they would fail over to the DC in the office, but that didn't happen. So I'm trying to figure out why. I'm not an expert on Active Directory so maybe I'm missing something obvious. Both domain controllers are running a DNS server. Each office workstation is configured to use the datacenter DC as its primary DNS server, and the office DC as its secondary: DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.3.20 10.0.66.19 Both DNS servers are working, and both domain controllers are working (at least, I can connect to them both using AD Users + Computers). Resolve another domain from current AD domain

We have 2 AD domain setup in our office. First is the primary domain for our office and exchange. The 2nd one is for development use to simulate production environment of our clients. Both domain are hosted on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise. We, the development team has no access to the office domain other than login and email purpose. DNS is running on PDC of both domain. Both domain does not use public domain name. Now, our machines are joined to the development domain and we use outlook to access our office's exchange. We've added DNS entries for both the domain. From time to time we are having problem resolving our office domain (i.e. during outlook login), which we need to edit our NIC's DNS to have only DNS server from our office and then flush DNS. After that switch back once it's able to resolve. Is there a permanent solution for this scenario like specifying that the office domain be resolve with another DNS server when requested from the development domain? Thanks

Microsoft.Office.Interop.MSProject - why are my files always locked (by me!) when I try to open them

Hi all, I'm trying to use Interop to manipulate MS Project 2003 (MPP) files. My problem is that MS Project reports that the files is already opened by another user (me!) and that I can open it only as read-only. Obviously, I've tried to restart studio, then windows (xp) but with no effect. The file attribute for Readonly is cleared on the file. Any suggestions for what I might try?! alert to back office personnel on client side trigerring?

I am building a ruby on rails project. it is a portal. I have a situation as follows: the user browses around. Suddenly he gets a doubt. I want to keep a small text box and a button that says "call me". To clarify the doubt the user can enter his phone number in the "call me" box. now the back office personnel should get an alert or a notification about this. I tried implementing juggernaut, but became a nightmare since the site is in a shared host and i couldn't configure the port. Kindly suggest a solution.

Produce high-quality, custom-size thumbnails from Office documents on Windows?

Hi, What do you think would be the best way to produce custom size image thumbnail from MS Office documents (doc, xls and ppt) on Windows with native code (means all means besides .NET/JAVA)? My current research result: IExtractImage COM. Problem: The size of the generated result is fixed and low quality, and you can't be sure all the source documents contain the thumbnails. Use a programmable virtual printer to print the specified page, and the printer must support image output, any good suggestion for this? What else would you suggest? thanks!

how can I write a script for Open Office writer?

Hi, not sure if this is the best forum or if there's someplace better...but I need to write a script/macro for Open Office. I am sending a letter to 4-6 different people (A,B,C,D). The format for, say, four people would be: Dear A, I'm writing to B,C, and D. Dear B, I am writing to A,C, and D. etc. Sometimes it may be 4. Sometimes 6. Sometimes 10. But it needs to cycle through all and do so listing the ones not in the "dear" header.

Unable to install ExchangeCdo with Outlook 2010

We recently got the Blackberry Express Server for our small home business and linked it in with our Exchange 2010 server. All is well except for calendar syncing. From what I can tell I require the ExchangeCdo patch. Except when I go to install it, it errors saying I require Outlook 2007. I have Outlook 2010 on the server and have no real way of getting 2007 on instead. Any suggestions?
