• Upgrading Visio 2000 to Visio 2007

  I have Microsoft Visio 2000 SR 1, and recently purchased Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2007 with the understanding (supported by the product info and some other research) that I'd be able to upgrade. However, when I install 2007, it tells me it can't find a previous install of Visio, but... it's right there! Here's the exact message: "Setup can't find a version of Microsoft Office on your computer. If Office is installed on a disk or network share, click the browse button to select the appropriate disk or share... (etc.)" No matter which directory or drive I pick (various Office installs, the old Visio install, various subdirectories) it gives the following message: "The path you have chosen does not point at a qualifying upgradeable product. Click 'Retry' to try again or 'Cancel' to quit setup." Any ideas? This is a legit copy of Visio 2007 (purchased from Amazon) and the copy of Visio 2000 is legit as well. I'm not sure what exactly the installer is looking for that it would consider a "qualifying upgradeable product". A specific file?

• SQL Server 2005 SP3 on Windows 7 - No Management Studio

  I've been trying for a day and a half now to get SQL Server 2005, DEV edition, to work on Windows 7, 64 bit prof. I install from the disk, then run SP 3. I get a failure on the Client Components section of the Installation Progress along with this vague message - Product : Client Components Product Version (Previous): 1399 Product Version (Final) : Status : Failure Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_tools.msp.log Error Number : 1712 Error Description : MSP Error: 1712 One or more of the files required to restore your computer to its previous state could not be found. Restoration will not be possible. I've uninstalled all Visual Studio and tried to make this as clean as possible, and have read a lot of the blog posts, but am really at my wits end about this. I am not a DBA, but I use SQL Server all the time when coding and testing apps. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can get this sorted out? I've been ati this for a long time and have never encountered an installation as bad as this one. Thanks Mike Thomas

• Re-configure Office 2007 installation unattended: Advertised components --> Local

  On our Citrix farm, I just found out that some sub-components are "Installed on 1st Use" (Advertised), which does play well on terminal servers. Not only that, but you also get a rather non-descriptive error message, when a document tried to use a component, which is "Installed on 1st Use" (described on Plan to deploy Office 2010 in a Remote Desktop Services environment): Microsoft Office cannot run this add-in. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning correctly. Please contact your system administrator.   Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free... • File corruption after copying files in Windows 7 64 bit using two methods

  I have 5000 pictures and other files in a directory taking up 35 GB. I want to duplicate this directory. Method 1: I do a simple copy and paste of the directory in explorer. I have the habit of checking the checksums after copying important files. In this case I noticed that around 2000 files failed the MD5 test. At a closer inspection of a randomly chosen JPEG with different checksums it turns out that some XMP metadata had changed. In particular, the tag <MicrosoftPhoto:DateAcquired> had changed the date from 2009 to today (possibly around the time I was copying the files). I have no idea what triggered this XMP data to be changed and exactly when it was changed and why for these particular files, but at least it seems to explain the checksum discrepancy. Method 2: As I want the exact files to be duplicated, I tried the program FreeFileSync to mirror the directory, hoping no XMP metadata would mysteriously change. A checksum test in addition to a thorough file comparison test in FreeFileSync lead to two similar but yet different results: 31 files fail the checksum test, 23 files fail the file comparison test. The smaller set is not entirely contained in the bigger set, although many files occur in both. What is alarming here is that not only JPEGs are flagged as altered but also som AVIs, MPGs and a large 7-zip file. Closer inspection of a JPEG indicates that it is indeed corrupt: the bottom half of the picture is simply plain gray. Due to the size of the 7-zip file, I have not been able to pin down the discrepancy. Note, in both methods, every file has its correct file size after being copied. Question: Any thoughts on what is possibly going on here? I have never had this problem before, and I am now terrified that files get corrupted after simple actions like copy/paste and file sync. Even if I manage to successfully copy the files somehow, I would still like an explanation to this.

• Very uneven CPU utilization with SQL Server 2012 on 2 processor computer with 16 cores / processor

  After installing SQL Server Enterprise 2012 with the Server + Cal license model, on a computer with 2 processors each with 16 cores (and no hyperthreading involved) and putting the server under extremely heavy load the 16 cores on the first processor were very underutilized, the first 4 cores on the 2nd CPU were heavily utilized, and the last 12 cores were not used at all (because of the 20 core limit for this sql server version). Total CPU utilization was displaying as around 25%. Unfortunately, the server suffered from extremely poor performance even though if the tasks were evenly distributed across the 20 cores it wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad. The Windows Server was running on a VMWare virtual image under ESX Server, but all of the CPU was allocated to the windows server. We tried changing affinity settings (e.g., allocating most cores to CPU and the others to I/O), but that didn't help solve the performance problems. Upgrading the product edition to SQL Server Enterprise Core 2012 not only allowed the SQL Server to utilize the 12 previously unused cores on the 2nd processor, but it also resulted in a much more even distribution of tasks across all of the processors. To get through the backlog of requests cpU utilization jumped to around 90%, and then came down to around 33% once it was caught up, but performance improved dramatically since we failed over to the newly updated version And the performance issues went away. I was wondering if anyone knows what might cause SQL Server to unevenly distribute the load, relying almost exclusively on the first 4 cores of the 2nd processor that had 12 cores idle, and allocate only a few tasks to each of the 16 cores on the first processor. Also, is there any way we could have more evenly distributed the load across the 20 cores that were being used without the product edition upgrade? The flip side of that question is what did the product upgrade do that caused SQL Server to start evenly distributing the load across all of the cores that it recognized? Thanks to any insight to answer these questions and/or links that might help me better understand how to make sense of what was happenings.

• Java web app deployment and ControlTier adoption

  I've been searching for a configuration and deployment manager tool for my java-linux based web service and have been looking mainly at ControlTier (http://controltier.org). We operate at a medium scale (100's of hosts, multi-DC, dozens of services). There seem to be be plenty of lower level system admin tools such as chef, puppet, cfengine, bcfg2 and more and my understanding and the reason I'm calling them "low level" is that they are great for system level administration tasks such as setting up a mount, file permissions, users etc but aren't designed, for example for java deployments, which usually come with a build process and special java semantics. In many cases any tool can be used to do anything but if it was not designed for the task it can get uncomfortable. OTOH control-tier seem to have been designed just for that - java application deployments, at least that's what all the tutorials on their site demonstrate but here's the problem - The wiki at http://controltier.org/wiki/ is pretty good and stuffed with examples and the company behind the open source CT product is very responsive (pushy...) however, I'm yet to have seen any material from 3rd party users on the net. No success stories, no detailed blog posts, no best practices, no cheat sheets, not even hate letters, nothing. This plays badly for DTO solutions, CT's sponsor for two reasons, one is that it makes me suspicious what's the reason for the poor adoption? and second, what do I do if I get stuck and there's no help page on CT's wiki page and the mailing list is too slow to answer. I'm stuck with a "free" product that a consultancy company is pushing. So my question here - I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had real world experience with CT for java based web app deployments and if he'd thumb up the product? Any other comments that may enlighten me are welcome of course...

• sharing a folder between linux and windows over the internet

  Hello Currently my job is to make websites with Django. I use many things like virtualenv, PIL, etc. The problem is, I can't stand Linux on my desktop. I like it on servers, It's greate to use it over the SSH. But for desktop? No way. But for the development Linux is quite essential. Of course almost everything is ported to Windows, but it's not as simple to use as in Linux. For example, Windows shell is awful in comparison with Linux. So I've tried Cygwin, but it's too damn slow. Every time django dev server reloads, it tooks almost 20-30 seconds. In comparison, then using "native" python on Windows or Linux, it reloads instantly. Even worse, Cygwin makes all my system very slow. I've been thinking about it and have thought up a way to go. I can share a folder with my application with some Linux box. The devserver and everything will run on that box, while I'll be happy editing files and running the browser on my Windows 7. SSH shell is much quickier and handy than Cygwin. Currently there are no Linux boxes in my home network (except for my android phone :) but I have several VDS boxes with Debian. So, how do I share a Windows folder with VDS box? I can't rely on my desktop IP but I can rely on the VDS's one. I need sharing to be as quick as possible (well, 2-3 seconds ping is OK) and "native" for both systems, so I could use a folder like a normal folder in both Windows and Linux.

• Question About mk-table-checksum Results

  Hello, I have 1 master and 2 slaves. I am using MySQL 5.1.42 on all servers. I am attempting to use mk-table-checksum to verify that their data is in sync, but I am getting unexpected results on one of the slaves. First, I generate the checksums on the master like this: mk-table-checksum h=localhost --databases MYDB --tables {$table_list} --replicate=MYDB.mk_checksum --chunk-size=10M My understanding is that this runs the checksum queries on the master which then propagate via normal replication to the slaves. So, no locking is needed because the slaves will be at the same logical point in time when they run the checksum queries on themselves. Is this correct? Next, to verify that the checksums match, I run this on the master: mk-table-checksum --databases MYDB --replicate=IRC.mk_checksum --replicate-check 1 h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx If there are any differences, I repair the slaves like this: mk-table-sync --execute --verbose --replicate IRC.mk_checksum h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx After doing all of this, I repaired both slaves with mk-table-sync. However, everytime I run this sequence (after everything has already been repaired), one slave is perfectly in sync but one slave always has a few tables out of sync. I am 99.999% sure that the data on the slaves matches, since I repaired everything and the tables were not even updated on the master between runs of the checksum script. What would cause a few tables to always show out of sync on only one of the slaves? I am stuck.   I am using Windows 7 and Ubuntu on the same machine. Earlier I had 3 GB of RAM,but now the Windows is displaying just 1 GB of RAM. • What's next for all of these Microsoft "overlapping" and "enhanced" products ?

  Recently I attended a road show, organised by MS Gold Partner company in the UK. The products discussed were: SharePoint server (2010 and 2007), Exchange server, Office Communication Server 2007, Exchange hosted services Office Live meeting, Office Communicator, System Center Configuration Manager and Operation Manager, VMware, Windows 7 etc. As Microsoft claims the enhancement in the each product against higher version, I felt that clients are not much interested in all these details. For example Office Communicator, surely they have improved a lot the product and first site all said 'WOW' great product, but nobody wish to pay money for all these extra features. Some argued, they are bogged down by all these increased number of menus. They don't need soft call feature included with mobile call. It apply for all other products as well such as MS office (next what 2 ribbons ?), windows OS and many more. Indeed there must be good features in all these products, but is it worth to spend money and time to update the older system ? Also sometimes these feature will decrease the productivity instead increase it. *So do you think what ever enhancement MS is doing in the products is only for selling purpose, not a real use ?? and I think also keep the developer busy learning the new tools and features. * I am sure some some people here will argue that some people need this sort of features. But I am not talking about NASA or MI5 guys. I am talking of usual businesses and joe public. Any ideas welcome.

• Restoring Windows 2008 Server X86 and X64

  Restoring Windows 2008 Server (Domain Controller) We are using Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 to Image our DC. Now this software has a feature to convert the backup into a vmware or hyper-v VM I have also used disk2vhd to convert one of our dc's to a vhd and when I connected it into Hyper-V, it booted fine, I can login - BUT :-) As soon as I login, I get the activation error, that change product key, this product key isn't good for this machine etc. Question is : When in a real recovery situation, what would be the procedure to restore it either virtual or onto a physical box but be able to login and change product key etc ? In this scenario its just locked down and I cant' do anything, if this is the case, how would I replicate my production environment via these tools ? Any Ideas ? Will be grateful for some real world examples here. Same thing happens with our exchange backup / test restore either physical or virtual, can login but nothing else. Now we don't have the keys as they are OEM keys and just wondering what will happen in a real scenario, would we be purchasing another KEY or using the OEM key on our new server ? This is a test environment I am trying to create by restoring our backups either into hyper-v or physical test machines. Also, If I build up a machine (Server 2008) in a VM (Hyper-V), How can I restore just the system state backup of my DC into it ? will that give me the activation error too ? even though I would use the TRIAL ISOs provided by Microsoft ? • How can I find a list of all SSE instructions? What happens if a CPU doesn't support SSE?

  So I've been reading about how processors work. Now I'm on the instructions (SSE, SSE2, etc) stuff. (Which is pretty interesting). I have lot of questions (I've been reading this stuff on Wikipedia): I've saw the names of some instructions that were added on SSE, however there's no explanation about any of them (Maybe SSE4? They're not even listed on Wikipedia). Where can I read about what they do? How do I know which of these instructions are being used? If we do know which are being used, let's say I'm doing a comparison, (This may be the most stupid question I've ever asked, I don't know about assembly, though) Is it possible to directly use the instruction on an assembly code? (I've been looking at this: http://asm.inightmare.org/opcodelst/index.php?op=CMP) How does the processor interpret the instructions? What would happen if I had a processor without any of the SSE instructions? (I suppose in the case we want to do a comparison, we wouldn't be able to, right?)

  I am using Fedora 8 and Oracle 10g Express Edition. Every time I start my fedora I have to click on start database. How can I add startdb.sh to startup so that it automatically executes when Fedora starts?   I have a e-commerce store. When I get a sale, I receive an order confirmation email which contains the name of the product sold. When the email comes through, I would like to run a script that replaces the product name eg. "red widget", with a picture of that product. Is that possible? I have found a similar code to replace text (set of numbers in this case) with a link, but I need it to replace with a picture instead. • Correct MySQL username/password, but getting Access Denied error when run from script

  I'm currently trying to run the following command from within a shell script. /usr/bin/mysql -u username -ppassword -h localhost database It works perfectly fine when executed manually, and not from within a script. When I try to execute a script that contains that command, I get the following error: ERROR 1045 (28000) at line 3: Access denied for user 'username'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I literally copied and pasted the working command into the script. Why the error? As a sidenote: the ultimate intent is to run the script with cron. EDIT: Here is a stripped down version of my script that I'm trying to run. You can ignore most of it up until the point where it connects to MySQL around line 19. #!/bin/sh #Run download script to download product data cd /home/dir/Scripts/Linux /bin/sh script1.sh #Run import script to import product data to MySQL cd /home/dir/Mysql /bin/sh script2.sh #Download inventory stats spreadsheet and rename it cd /home/dir /usr/bin/wget http://www.url.com/file1.txt mv file1.txt sheet1.csv #Remove existing export spreadsheet rm /tmp/sheet2.csv #Run MySQL queries in "here document" format /usr/bin/mysql -u username -ppassword -h localhost database << EOF --Drop old inventory stats table truncate table table_name1; --Load new inventory stats into table Load data local infile '/home/dir/sheet1.csv' into table table_name1 fields terminated by ',' optionally enclosed by '"' lines terminated by '\r\n'; --MySQL queries to combine product data and inventory stats here --Export combined data in spreadsheet format group by p.value into outfile '/tmp/sheet2.csv' fields terminated by ',' optionally enclosed by '"' lines terminated by '\r\n'; EOF EDIT 2: After some more testing, the issue is with the << EOF that is at the end of the command. This is there for the "here document". When removed, the command works fine. The problem is that I need << EOF there so that the MySQL queries will run.

• A few tables are still out of sync after running mk-table-sync

  I have 1 master and 2 slaves. I am using MySQL 5.1.42 on all servers. I am attempting to use mk-table-checksum to verify that their data is in sync, but I am getting unexpected results on one of the slaves. First, I generate the checksums on the master like this: mk-table-checksum h=localhost --databases MYDB --tables {$table_list} --replicate=MYDB.mk_checksum --chunk-size=10M My understanding is that this runs the checksum queries on the master which then propagate via normal replication to the slaves. So, no locking is needed because the slaves will be at the same logical point in time when they run the checksum queries on themselves. Is this correct? Next, to verify that the checksums match, I run this on the master: mk-table-checksum --databases MYDB --replicate=IRC.mk_checksum --replicate-check 1 h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx If there are any differences, I repair the slaves like this: mk-table-sync --execute --verbose --replicate IRC.mk_checksum h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx After doing all of this, I repaired both slaves with mk-table-sync. However, everytime I run this sequence (after everything has already been repaired), one slave is perfectly in sync but one slave always has a few tables out of sync. I am 99.999% sure that the data on the slaves matches, since I repaired everything and the tables were not even updated on the master between runs of the checksum script. What would cause a few tables to always show out of sync on only one of the slaves? I am stuck. • DVI splitter not working as expected/confusion between DVI-D and -I

  Hey guys, thanks for looking. I have an ATI FirePro™ V3700 in my desktop machine, and I have been running a dual-monitor setup quite effortlessly, thanks to the two DVI ports on the card. I came upon a third monitor, and wanted to extend my desktop to 3 screens, so I purchased a DVI splitter from Amazon. Now, I can only duplicate the second monitor onto the third, not extend it. I've tried all possible combinations of input to no avail. Here's the setup: The ATI FirePro™ V3700 has two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs The splitter splits a single Dual-Link DVI-I port into two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs Two of the monitors are NEC E222W, and the third monitor is a Dell 2001FP. Each monitor has one D-Sub and one Dual-Link DVI-D input. Cables going from the video card to the monitors are two Dual-Link DVI-D to the NECs and one Single-Link DVI-D to the Dell. Is the problem likely with the DVI-D/DVI-I mismatch? Or is it with the cable on the Dell that is only a Single-Link? The cables are easily replaceable, the monitors not so much. • Recommended drive encryption solution

  Hello, I will soon be purchasing a number of laptops running Windows 7 for our mobile staff. Due to the nature of our business I will need drive encryption. Windows BitLocker seems the obvious choice, but it looks like I need to purchase either Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate editions to get it. Can anyone offer suggestions on the best course of action: a) Use BitLocker, bite the bullet and pay to upgrade to Enterprise/Ultimate b) Pay for another 3rd party drive encryption product that is cheaper (suggestions appreciated) c) Use a free drive encryption product such as TrueCrypt Ideally I am also interested in 'real world' experience from people who are using drive encryption software and any pitfalls to look out for. Many thanks in advance... UPDATE Decided to go with TrueCrypt for the following reasons: a) The product has a good track record b) I am not managing a large quantity of laptops so integration with Active Directory, Management consoles etc is not a huge benefit c) Although eks did make a good point about Evil Maid (EM) attacks, our data is not that desirable to consider it a major factor d) The cost (free) is a big plus but not the primary motivator The next problem I face is imaging (Acronis/Ghost/..) encrypted drives will not work unless I perform sector-by-sector imaging. That means an 80Gb encrypted partition creates an 80Gb image file :(

• Platform to allow users to suggest and vote for ideas

  I head up a support team for a software product. I am in the process of setting up a blog (Wordpress.org), a forum (PHPBB or maybe Vanilla), a means to view bugs (probably expose Jira), but would also like to allow our customers to suggest enhancement requests. Currently we have this as a 'contact form' via the blog, which feeds into a dedicated inbox, which the product manager reviews and may include some of these ideas into the product. However, I would like to give the clients more power/visibility over this. Have a look at ideas.arcgis.com. There are plenty of other similar sites as well. Users can suggest new ideas Other users can vote these ideas up or down (similar to Stack Exchange sites) Ideas that are voted highly will be given a higher priority over lower ones. We can report back on the # of ideas we implement, and potentially reject ideas with reasoning. Has anyone seen any platforms (ideally free) which would replicate something similar to this? I was half thinking of embedding Vanilla within a wordpress page, but need to look into it more.

• Is it a good Idea to switch to a SSD to use less battery?

  I am thinking of buying a SSD for my laptop, mainly for the purpose of extended operating time when running on battery. At the moment I use a Hitachi HTS545032B9A300 (320GB) (Datasheet) as main drive and a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 120GB as secondary drive. I dualboot Windows and Linux but I don't need the windows partition any longer, a 120GB SDD would be more than sufficient space-wise. Speed is not an issue for me, I make heavy use of tmpfs (ramdrive) within Linux and transfers of bigger files are mainly through some network filesystem anyways, thus a cheaper SSD should do. For the purpose of comparison I chose the OCZ Vertex Plus 120GB. Power consumption always is a big promotional thing the industry uses to make me want to buy their SSDs, some sheet on the OCZ page provides an astonishing comparison of desktop HDDS and SSDs. The numbers I got comparing my laptop HDD and their SSD were not really astonishing any longer. Hitachi 320GB HDD: Startup (W, peak, max.) 4.5 Seek (W, avg.) 1.7 Read / Write (W, avg.) 1.4 Performance idle (W, avg.) 1.3 Active idle (W, avg.) 0.8 Low power idle (W, avg.) 0.5 Standby (W, avg.) 0.2 Sleep 0.1 OCZ 120GB SSD: 1.5W active 0.3W standby I see that there are differences, but actually they don't seem that high as I though they were. And compared to the power consuption of the rest of my system I wonder if it makes a difference at all. Have I just taken the wrong look at the whole thing or may I be better off to buy another battery for my laptop?

• Euro character messed up during FTP transfer

  My customer is using a very outdated ecommerce management system on my hosting service. For that product, no support is being provided anymore by the vendor. Brief explanation: the shop website, that claims to run under LAMP stack, is built by an old Visual Basic Windows application running on MS Access. The user constructs the shop, defines the HTML template, adds products and categories, etc. Then the VB exe builds the PHP pages (one for each template page) and the SQL script to run on MySQL. It also uploads everything via FTP and runs the installation/upgrade script on its own. The problem Browsing the website, many products' descriptions are cut before the euro sign. For example, what was supposed to be "Product price €1000" becomes "Product price" The analysis MySQL contains a cutted description until the € sign, so it's not PHP fault The Access databases contain full description with € sign, so it's not fault of the webmaster writing bad description or eDisplay cutting them The SQL that will run once the site gets uploaded, stored on my local machine before upload, contains the € sign The same script, after being FTPed by eDisplay and opened with nano from SSH, shows the € sign messed up like this: ^À vsftpd log reports (obfuscated for privacy) Sat Dec 15 11:16:57 2012 22 xxx.xxx.128.13 1112727 /srv/www/domains/xxxxxx.it/htdocs/db.sql b _ i r xxxxxxx ftp 0 * c which seems to be a binary transfer (and also a huge security vulnerability because you can download the whole database from unauthenticated HTTP) The eDisplay internal FTP client provides no option for ascii/binary transfer modes [Add] Trying to manually upload the SQL file via SFTP shows messing up euro [Add2] Trying to manually upload using Xftp client with explicit ASCII mode doesn't fix too It looks like the file gets uploaded as binary. Perhaps on the customer's previous host it all worked fine because that was a Windows host. The server It's an Azure virtual machine running openSUSE 12.2 with both vsftpd and openSSH The question Without asking the customer to manually upload files using FileZilla or replacing € with &euro;, because he refuses, what can I do on server side to prevent vsftpd to screw up euro sign?
