• What is the minimum delay between two consecutive RS232 frames?

  I have been working on creating a UART on an FPGA. I can successfully transmit and receive single characters typed on PuTTY. However, when I set my FPGA to constantly write a large sequences of "A", sometimes I end up with a sequences of "@" or some other characters until I reset the FPGA a few times. I believe the UART on the computer looses track of the difference between the start bit and a zero. The delay between the two "A" is ~ 30us (measured with a logic analyzer) and the baud rate is 115200 8N1. Is there a minimum delay that must be maintained between two consecutive RS232 frames?

• Is there any software or hardware which lets you stop, slow down, speed up or even reverse time?

  Obviously I'm talking about time in terms of the PC clock rather than real time. We were testing an application we've developed at work by setting the clock forward and back to simulate different scenarios and I started thinking how useful it would be if you could adjust the rate(?) of the system clock with finer control. So you could make a minute pass in a second or a day pass in 30 seconds and watch how the program you're developing copes with changes in date and time. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows of any software or hardware which can let you do some or all of the above.

• Avoid cache overflow in Atempo LiveBackup

  When attempting the initial backup of a new client, Atempo LiveBackup seems to require a very large cache. For instance, a 20 GB cache is not enough to back up a computer that has 100 GB of data. It appears that LiveBackup is adding new files to the cache at a faster rate than it can send them to the server. When the cache fills up, the backup fails. Aside from removing most data from the computer and then add them back gradually after the initial backup, is there a good workaround? Is it possible to make LiveBackup slow down its scan so as to not fill the cache? Or is it possible to place the cache on an external drive?

  I own a server that it's costantly being attacked by scripts (that try to access to phpMyAdmin's setup file's and stuff like this). I've heard that many people get this kinds of attacks, but I'm starting to worry since they are getting more common (last month I got 2 attacks, and on november 7th there are 3 attempts already (1st, 4th and 6th of nov). I'm not really concerned about it, since I don't have any database. All the info i have on that server is absolutely public, but I'm worried about that attacking-rate increase. So I thought I could -temporarily- block the IPs that come from those attackers, or something that could make my server ignore requests that ask for phpMyAdmin, pma, xamp, etc. Is there something like that? my server is Linux+Apache+Php

• Help accessing Beagle over serial with Minicom/GTKTerm

  I am trying to access a brand new Beagle Board from Ubuntu or Mac over serial using the setup seen here: http://specialcomp.com/beagleboard/RevC1.htm I got Minicom and GTKTerm installed on the Ubuntu box. I set up the correct baud rate, turned off flow control, and have tried ttyUSB0 and ttyS0. Once minicom is configured properly, I should just see the init text from the board appear if I have minicom open in terminal while I plug in the board, correct? dmesg shows ttyUSB0 on the computer has been connected to ttyS0 on the beagle.

• Poor quality when trying to stream a 720p video to XBox 360 using Media Center Extender

  I have my XBox 360 set up as a Media Center Extender for my Windows 7 desktop. SD quality avi videos stream fine to my XBox, either though the video library or through Media Center Extender, but when I try a 720p mkv file, the frame rate plummets and the A/V sync is completely lost. I don't want to transcode or switch container formats (mkv isn't supported by the 360), but still want to stream. Both my desktop and 360 are plugged into the same gigabit switch, which is plugged into my ISP supplied modem/router. The video plays fine on my machine in a number of programs. Considering that I should have more than enough bandwidth to accommodate this video, why won't it play back properly?

• Improve performance on Lync desktop sharing

  I'm using Lync 2010 server to handle some clients communication and screen sharing. The biggest issue is the performance with screen sharing, it is of rather high quality but the frame rate is very poor. I have been reading and searching a lot on the subject and 95% of all topics is about bandwidth, we have a 200/200 MBit Internet connection solely for this application. Also my test machines runs on an internal gigabit lan. The speeds between all boxes is hysterically fast. Next step was to ensure that there where some profiles for different bandwidths, so i registered some New-CsNetworkBandwidthPolicyProfile -Identity 50Mb_Link -Description "BW profile for 50Mb links" -AudioBWLimit 20000 -AudioBWSessionLimit 200 -VideoBWLimit 14000 -VideoBWSessionLimit 700 New-CsNetworkBandwidthPolicyProfile -Identity 100Mb_Link -Description "BW profile for 100Mb links" -AudioBWLimit 30000 -AudioBWSessionLimit 300 -VideoBWLimit 25000 -VideoBWSessionLimit 1500 Nothing fancy happend here either. Non of the test boxes have anything from Norton installed, they doesn't have any firewalls running (nor does the Lync server), all fences are down in this environment just for the testing. Is there any thing that I may have missed to improve the quality of this? Thanks

• How do I hookup a dual video card Crossfire rig to a single monitor?

  I just received a new Alienware box preinstalled with two nice shiny ATI 6950 graphics cards. My goal is to use both of them to give me really good resolution and frame rate on my single monitor. There's zero documentation with the Alienware box and nothing I can find online. Do I just plug the monitor into one of the cards, and expect the two cards to do magic internally? The ATI Crossfire website indicates a need for an "external crossfirex connection cable". Do I need to buy one of these? If so, what kind of cable is it? The AMD Catalyst Control Center shows the second card as "Linked" but when I go to the AMD Overdrive section, the second card is at zero temperature, and clock, suggesting it's not actually doing anything. What do I need to do to make use of both cards? Is it something that doesn't kick in until I do something graphically intensive?

Approaches I'm aware of: Turn Prisoner numbers into text by having ="24601" and ="0.50" Only select rows 2 onwards as data, and then add in the labels once the graph has been created? Approaches that don't appear to work: Ask Excel to format the first row's numbers as text.

• joining text files with 600M+ lines

  I have two files huge.txt and small.txt. Huge has around 600M rows and it's 14Gigs, each line has four space separated words (tokens) and finally another space separated column with a number. Small has 150K rows with a size of ~3M, a space separated word and a number. Both Files are sorted using the sort command, with no extra options. The words in both files may include apostrophes (') and dashes (-). The deisred output would contain all columns from the huge.txt and the second column (the number) from small txt where the first word of huge.txt and the first word of small.txt match. My attemtpts below failed miserably with the following error: cat huge.txt|join -o 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 2.2 - small.txt > output.txt join: memory exhausted What I suspect is that the sorting order isn't right somehow even though the files are pre-sorted using: sort -k1 huge.unsorted.txt > huge.txt sort -k1 small.unsorted.txt > small.txt Problems seem to appear around words that have apostrophes (') or dashes (-). I also tried dictinoary sorting using the -d option bumping into the same error at the end. I see two ways out of this but don't know how to implement any of them. 1) Any tips how to sort the files in a way that the join command considers them to be sorted properly? 2) I was thinking of calculating MD5 or some other hashes of the strings to get rid of the apostrophes and dashes, and do the sorting and joining with the hashes instead of the strings themselves an dat the "translate" back the hashes to strings, but leave the numbers intact at the end of the lines. Since there would be only 150K hashes it's not that bad. What would be a good way to calculate individual hashes for each of the strings? Some AWK magic? See file samples at the end. • Terminal Server 2003 Gaining Time when Windows 7 Client Connects

  A Windows 2003 Terminal Server keeps time perfectly until a Windows 7 Home client connects. Then it gains time at a rate of several seconds per minute. The client connects through a firewall with only the RDP port open. The client runs the same apps on the terminal server that XP clients run with no issues. Using the Microsoft Terminal Server Client application copied to the W7 computer from an XPsp3 computer gives the same results. Current workaround is to sync time every 5 minutes. Any better ideas?

• Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. And the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

  Right now I have an excel spreadsheet. In Cells A1 and down I have cities listed. In Cells B1 and down I have some generic information with the word CITY in it. What I want to know if there is a formula to replace the word CITY that is in the contents of Cell B1 with the contents in Cell A1. For instance... Cell A1 has "Daytona Beach, FL" Cell B1 has "Compare mortgage & refinance rates from different mortgage lenders and brokers in CITY. Find the home refinance rate you were looking for in CITY."   I hope I phrased this correctly. lshw gives: description: DIMM Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns) product: M378B5773CH0-CH9 vendor: Samsung physical id: 0 slot: DIMM0 size: 2GiB width: 64 bits clock: 400MHz (2.5ns) And indeed the memory speed is set is set to 800MHz in the BIOS, which I think makes sense since it is a double rate. On the other hand, Googling strongly suggests that to this product number corresponds the PC3-10600 type, which is 1333MHz, not 800MHz. And this seems to be confirmed in the BIOS, where if I select Auto for memory bus speed, 1333MHz is selected "based on SPD settings". However in the latter case, the computer does not boot, i.e. the kernel panics, complaining that something attempted to kill the Idle process. So, I am I am beginning to suspect that I have been given defective memory, the technician that installed saw this, and lowered the bus speed. Is this a possibility?

When you play some games, sometimes happens situations like "press quickly the X key to escape from ropes" or "press quickly the X key to fill the rage gauge", etc. Of course, that kind of game destroy keyboards, joysticks, mouses, etc. I would like to know about programs (preferentially free) that, by example, will press the 'x' key in intervals of, by example, 300ms. Remember that the built in Windows "keyboard repeat rate" doesn't works for games. When you press (and hold) somekey in the game, the key is not repeated as in default Windows Applications. Thanks!
