  • Is the "message" of an exception culturally independent?

    - by Ray Hayes
    In an application I'm developing, I have the need to handle a socket-timeout differently from a general socket exception. The problem is that many different issues result in a SocketException and I need to know what the cause was. There is no inner exception reported, so the only information I have to work with is the message: "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond" This question has a general and specific part: is it acceptable to write conditional logic based upon the textual representation of an exception? Is there a way to avoid needing exception handling? Example code below... try { IPEndPoint endPoint = null; client.Client.ReceiveTimeout = 1000; bytes = client.Receive(ref endPoint); } catch( SocketException se ) { if ( se.Message.Contains("did not properly respond after a period of time") ) { // Handle timeout differently.. } }

  • Design patter for extending Android's activities?

    - by Carl
    While programming on Android, I end up writing a parent activity which is extended by several others. A bit like ListActivity. My parent activity extends Activity. if I intend to use a Map or a List, I can't use my parent activity as superclass - the child activity can only extend one activity obviously. As such I end up writing my parent activities with the same logic for Activity, ListActivity, MapActivity and so forth. What am I looking for is some sort of trait functionality/design pattern which would help in this case. Any suggestions?

  • textFieldShouldBeginEditing + UIKeyboardWillShowNotification + OS 3.2

    - by user193545
    I have multiple textfields on a UIView. I resign for a previous textField in textFieldShouldBeginEditing method, where following sequence of events are performed UIKeyboardWillHideNotification is received corresponding to that field where the keyboard for the previous field is hidden. the method textFieldShouldBeginEditing returns a YES and then UIKeyboardWillShowNotification is received where the keyboard for the current field is displayed. However, in OS 3.2 even though textFieldShouldBeginEditing returns a YES, UIKeyboardWillShowNotification for the current field is not received. The logic works for OS < 3.2 Any ideas where I might be doing wrong?

  • Rendering Views as String with Spring MVC and Apache Tiles

    - by lynxforest
    I am trying to reuse some of my tiles in a controller which is returning a json response to the client. I would like to return a json response similar to the following format: { 'success': <true or false>, 'response': <the contents of an apache tile> } In my controller I would like to perform logic similar to this pseudocode: boolean valid = validator.validate(modelObj) String response = "" if(valid){ response = successView.render() // im looking for a way to actually accomplish // this, where the successView is the apache tiles view. // I would also need to pass a model map to the view somehow. }else{ response = errorView.render() } writeJsonResponse(httpResponse, /* a Map whose json representation looks like the one I described above. */)

  • Mixing expressions and expression language (<%= %> inside of c:if)

    - by Jack
    I need to access some constants in my jsp, and sadly the EL does not offer any functionality for it. There are some options like the unstandard tag library, but I'd like to keep it a bit more standard. I tried: <%@ page import = "com.jackdane.Constants"%> <c:if test="${object.display == '<%=com.jackdane.Constants.YES %>}'"> //some display logic </c:if> But that doesn't appear to do the trick. It's been a while since I've used an expression so I might have made an error. Any input is appreciated. Edit: To clarify, the constants class is not in my control. It's inside a jar file that I recieved. It contains no getters/setters. Just private static final Strings.

  • Redirecting before POST upload has been completed

    - by vartec
    I have form with file upload. The files to be uploaded actually are pictures and videos, so they can be quite big. I have logic which based on headers and first 1KB can determine if the rest will be processed or immediately rejected. In the later case I'd like to redirect client to error page without having to wait for upload to finish. The case is, that just sending response before POST is complete doesn't seem to work. The redirect get's ignored and if I close connection, browser complains with "Connection reset by peer" error. So the question is: is it even possible to do that in pure HTTP (without JavaScript on client-side), and if so, how?

  • Class architecture, no friends allowed

    - by Captain Comic
    The question of why there are no friends in C# has been extensively discussed. I have the following design problems. I have a class that has only one public function AddOrder(Order ord). Clients are allowed to call only this function. All other logic must be hidden. Order class is listening to market events and must call other other function of TradingSystem ExecuteOrder, so I have to make it public as well. Doing that I will allow clients of Trading system to call this function and I don't want that. class TradingSystem { // Trading system stores list of orders List<Order> _orders; // this function is made public so that Order can call ir public ExecuteOrder(Order ord) { } // this function is made public for external clients public AddOrder(OrderRequest ordreq) { // create order and pass it this order.OnOrderAdded(this); } } class Order { TradingSystem _ts; public void OnOrderAdded(TradingSystem ts) { _ts = ts; } void OnMarketEvent() { _ts.ExecuteOrder() } }

  • How to stop a Timer-X timer (jQuery)

    - by Damien K.
    I'm using Timer-X's timerDelayCall function in order to have a repeating rotator on my page, which starts automatically as the page loads: jQuery.timerDelayCall({ interval: 2000, repeat: true, callback: function(timer) { ... (my rotator logic here) } } }); The problem is that I'm trying to make a function that includes stopping that timer: function signUp() { ... (timer stop code here) } The documentation stats that timer.stop() does that, but however I format it, I get errors about it not being declared. I have tried every variation I can think of, such as: timer.stop(); jQuery.timer.stop(); $(document).timer.stop(); jQuery.timerDelayCall({ callback: function(timer) { timer.stop() } }); I'm sure I'm missing something simple - I come from a PHP background yet I'm new to javascript - but can't see what it is exactly. Help is much appreciated!

  • Determine outer boundries of polygon from lat/lng point array

    - by DustinDavis
    I have a large array of lat/lng points. Could be up to 20k points. I'm plotting them using KML. What I want to do is to take only the outter most points and use them to draw a polygon instead. I already know how to draw a polygon in kml, I just need to figure out how to select only the outer most points of the group. Any ideas? I'd like to have at least 5 points to the polygon but no more than 25 points total. So far i've come up with checking for top most and bottom most points (basically crearing a square) using < & logic. The points will be in america & canada only if that matters. Thanks for any help.

  • Keeping Computer Science Writing Accessible and Eloquent

    - by Federer
    This question is particularly aimed at descriptions and explanations of what is happening in a computer program, as well as any general advice or approaches for undertaking technical reports in Computer Science at both undergraduate and graduate levels. You see, I am having particular difficulty in the best way to explain what is happening. As in, given any given program from a multi-agent system to a standard webservice, the best and most eloquent way to say exactly what is going on, the logic behind it and it's respective justifications. Should I avoid saying class names? Avoid specifying methods? Keep referring to class variables and any particular references? I'm banging my head against the wall at trying to keep a solid technical foundation and making it accessible to people of all backgrounds. Apologies for the rather vague question. Cheers.

  • Interview Question: What are the characteristics of a good programmer?

    - by froadie
    I was asked this question on an interview a few months ago - "What would you say are the characteristics of a good programmer?" What would you answer to this? What, as a hiring manager, would you be looking for in an answer? I did get the job and am currently working with this company, although I don't know if that means I answered what they wanted to hear, but here were a couple of the points I mentioned: Passion PATIENCE Logic Teamwork etc. I'm especially curious to hear from the hiring side of things what would impress as an answer...

  • Good way to fetch XML from a remote URL, convert it to HTML and display it in a ASP.NET-page

    - by Binary255
    Hi, The use case I want to achive is. 1. Fetch XML from a remote URL. 2. Convert it to HTML using XSLT 3. Insert the generated HTML at a position in my ASP.NET web forms page. Alternative on the above, if 1 returns a 404: 2. Generate HTML which display an error message to the user. Only step 3 is left as I've completed 1-2. As there are logic for handling the two execution paths and performing the XSLT-transformation I thought it would be suitable to keep it in the code-behind file. What's a good, clean way of inserting generated HTML at a position in my ASP.NET web forms page?

  • Display local image in iPhone HTML mail

    - by Sjakelien
    Hello there, In my app, I am composing an HMTL email message with the 3.0+ MFMailComposeViewController. To do this, I created an HTML file, with some placeholders. In my code, I read the HTML file, and with replaceOccurrencesOfString, I replace the placeholders with data from the app. In that way, I compose the body of the email I want to send out. This is all working very nicely, except for the fact, that in my HTML file, I have an <img src='imageplaceholderpath' /> tag. Somehow, I cannot figure out, with what I should replace this imageplaceholderpath, in order to refer to an image that resides in my app. Is this a valid approach at all, and if so, what would be the syntax/logic behind the path I should put there? I do appreciate your insights! Regards Sjakelien

  • JavaScript pack("d") - binary strings

    - by Tim Whitlock
    I'm trying to replicate the Perl and PHP style pack and unpack functions in JavaScript. Unsigned integers were easy enough, so my pack('n') and pack('N') are ok. But my lack of a computer science background is a hurdle now and I don't know where to start with pack('d') for packing JavaScript's standard floating point. Is there a JavaScript library for this out there? If not, is there a good resource where I can learn how to do this? I am fine with bitwise and binary level operations in JS, I just don't know where to start with the logic. Thanks.

  • What features do you expect from a Java (Rich) Client Framework?

    - by Peter Walser
    I'm intending to design (and provide a reference implementation for) a new Swing Rich Client Framework. My job and personal experience covers many project-specific Swing client frameworks as well as the Eclipse RCP, and every one of them had some original and clever concepts, but also drawbacks and rigid realizations. My plan is to incorporate the best of those concepts and features into a new framework whose core is very open and extendable. For my must-have-features list, I'm counting on your input and hope you can share some concept pearls & diamonds you've encountered in other frameworks, or features you always wanted to have or have in a better way. The framework is intended for very simple to very complex and sophisticated projects for clients that need full i18n for richt clients that execute some or all of the non-presentation logic on the server to be very lightweight to be easy to learn and use Thanks in advance for sharing your insights :)

  • Python Terminated Thread Cannot Restart

    - by Mel Kaye
    Hello, I have a thread that gets executed when some action occurs. Given the logic of the program, the thread cannot possibly be started while another instance of it is still running. Yet when I call it a second time, I get a "RuntimeError: thread already started" error. I added a check to see if it is actually alive using the Thread.is_alive() function, and it is actually dead. What am I doing wrong? I can provide more details as are needed.

  • Convert Yes/No/Null from SQL to True/False in a DataTable

    - by Scott Chamberlain
    I have a Sql Database (which I have no control over the schema) that has a Column that will have the varchar value of "Yes", "No", or it will be null. For the purpose of what I am doing null will be handled as No. I am programming in c# net 3.5 using a data table and table adapter to pull the data down. I would like to directly bind the column using a binding source to a check box I have in my program however I do not know how or where to put the logic to convert the string Yes/No/null to boolean True/False; Reading a null from the SQL server and writing back a No on a update is acceptable behavior. Any help is greatly appreciated. EDIT -- This is being developed for windows.

  • Disable the Go button in the Keyboard for a UITextfield in iphone app.

    - by coder net
    Hi, My app has a screen where keyboard is always visible. The main element of the screen is a UITextfield. For easy data entering, keyboard is always made visible. When the user finishes entering data and hits Go, the app performs a 4,5 seconds action which is done in the background thread in order to show UIActivityIndicatorView. My problem is that the Go button on the keyboard still shows as enabled since the logic is performed in the background. The user could potentially hit the Go again causing it to run again. I am not able to set editable/userinteraction properties to No because then the keyboard disappears. Is there anyway just to disable the Go button or freeze the keyboard until the background thread returns?

  • Is there anything like Zope Page Templates for Ruby on Rails?

    - by dan
    I have a Ruby on Rails app that I built myself, but which needs a redesign by a professional designer. I know most designers just give you Photoshop mockups and slices, but I would like to hire someone to implement the design as well, which means rewriting the css style sheets and the erb and haml templates. The problem is that I want someone else to implement the redesign without exposing my business logic code to the redesign implementer. Also, I wish there was a way to allow a designer to implement a redesign on a Ruby on Rails site without having to know anything about Ruby on Rails. Are either of these scenarios possible using any combination of software tools? I guess I'm looking for something like Zope Page Templates, but for Ruby on Rails. http://quintagroup.com/cms/zpthttp://quintagroup.com/cms/zpt

  • Using TDD: "top down" vs. "bottom up"

    - by Christian Mustica
    Since I'm a TDD newbie, I'm currently developing a tiny C# console application in order to practice (because practice makes perfect, right?). I started by making a simple sketchup of how the application could be organized (class-wise) and started developing all domain classes that I could identify, one by one (test first, of course). In the end, the classes have to be integrated together in order to make the application runnable, i.e. placing necessary code in the Main method which calls the necessary logic. However, I don't see how I can do this last integration step in a "test first" manner. I suppose I wouldn't be having these issues had I used a "top down" approach. The question is: how would I do that? Should I have started by testing the Main() method? If anyone could give me some pointers, it will be much appreciated.

  • How to inherit from the main class in java

    - by user225269
    I have two java classes. One is NewFrame.java where the forms(buttons, textfields) are located. And the other one is Main.java where I have put the connection string for mysql: Main.java looks like this: public class Main { /** * @param args the command line arguments */ public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { // TODO code application logic here Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"); Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/employee_record", "root", "password"); PreparedStatement statement = con.prepareStatement("select * from employee"); ResultSet result = statement.executeQuery(); } } How do I inherit from the main.java so that the declarations in it would be universally accessible to the forms in NewFrame.java? Please help. Thanks

  • C++ DLLs newer version

    - by koumides
    All, I have a C++ COM DLL written using Visual Studio. All the interfaces have GUIDs in idl and rgs files. We want to create a new DLL with brand new GUIDs as we want it to co-exist on the same machine with the old one but with different logic. The number of GUIDs is more than 200. Is there a tool that finds the GUIDs and replaces them ? I noticed for every GUID in idl file there are 3 same ones in the rgs files. I am not really into C++ COM but I have to get this done : Rgds, MK

  • Android game goes blank after pressing home and restarting

    - by sirconnorstack
    I am making an Android game with an Activity called Game, a SurfaceView called GameView and a Thread called GameThread. The Game's onCreate(), I make a new GameView, which makes a new GameThread, where all the game logic and canvas drawing is carried out. However, I'm having some lifecycle difficulties. When I press back and restart it, it works fine, but when I press home and restart it, all I see is a blank screen. Here are the GameView's onSurfaceCreated() and onSurfaceDestroyed(): @Override public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) { mThread.mRunning = true; mThread.mWidth = getWidth(); if(mThread.mWidth > 550) mThread.mWidth = 550; mThread.mHeight = getHeight(); try { mThread.start(); } catch(IllegalThreadStateException e) { } } @Override public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) { // Wait for the secondary thread to end before finishing boolean retry = true; mThread.mRunning = false; while (retry) { try { mThread.join(); retry = false; } catch (InterruptedException e) { } } }
