• Adding behaviour to a set of classes

  I have defined an Event class: Event and all the following classes inherit from Event: SportEventType1 SportEventType2 SportEventType3 SportEventType4 Right now I will only have SportEvents but I don't know if in the future I'll want some other kind of events that doesn't even have anything to do with Sports. Later, I will want to draw some graphics with info taken from Events, and the drawing logic can be a bit complex. But, for the moment, I think I shouldn't think of how the drawing will be done and I believe that maybe it'd be better if that drawing part was not put as an integral part of the Event/SportEventX class chain. I am looking for solutions for this problem. I know I could just make Event have an instance variable(attribute, for the java crowds) pointing to something as an IDrawInterface, but that would make the Event class "assume" it will be later used for drawing. I would like to make the Event class oblivious to this if possible. Thanks!

  I set the width of a textarea to 100%, but now I need to know how many characters can fit in one row. I'm trying to write a javascript function to auto-grow/shrink a textarea. I'm trying to keep from using jquery since I just need this one function. My logic is to rows = textarea.value.split('\n'), iterate through rows and count += rows[i].length/textarea.cols, then count += rows.length, and finally textarea.rows = count. The only problem is that count is too large because textarea.cols is too small.

• Refactoring thick client legacy application

  I am working on a fat client legacy C++ application which has a lot of business logic mixed in with the presentation side of things. I want to clean things out and refactor the code out completely, so there is a clear seperation of concerns. I am looking at MVC or some other suitable design pattern in order to achieve this. I would like to get recommendations from people who have walked this road before - Do I use MVP or MVC (or another pattern)? • Weblogic server: Why response sent prior to post completion

  When analyzing traffic with a packet sniffer, we are seeing an http response from a weblogic server prior to the completion of the http post to that server. In this case, the jsp page on the server is basically a static page, no logic to do anything with the contents of the post at this time. But why would the server send the response prior to completion of the post? I found Weblogic documentation about how to configure the server to ignore a denial-of-service attack using Http post. Maybe that is what is happening? No one I know has seen this behaviour before. Maybe some weblogic-savvy person will know what is going on. Thanks

• How to deal with multiple Facebook requests simultaneously

  I'm using the Facebook SDK for my app. I have created a singleton class FacebookHelper to deal with all Facebook related logic. Whenever I make a Facebook request (i.e download friends) I set an enum i.e FacebookRequestDownloadFriends so that FacebookHelper knows how to handle errors and success for that request (since handling can be different between the different requests) This solution has worked out fine until now, because now I'm doing 2 Facebook Requests at the same time so when I set the enum for the first request i.e FacebookRequestDownloadFriends and then it will be overwritten just shortly with another request FacebookRequestDownloadEvents, so there will be confusion obviously. How can I deal with this issue without having to refactor too much code?

  Hi all, I'm not sure if this question has been answered elsewhere and I can't seem to find anything through google that isn't a "Hello World" example... I'm coding in C# .NET 4.0. I'm trying to develop a console application that will open, display text, and then wait for the user to input commands, where the commands will run particular business logic. For example: If the user opens the application and types "help", I want to display a number of statements etc etc. I'm not sure how to code the 'event handler' for user input though. • Why isn't the eigenclass equivalent to self.class, when it looks so similar?

  I've missed the memo somewhere, and I hope you'll explain this to me. Why is the eigenclass of an object different from self.class? class Foo def initialize(symbol) eigenclass = class << self self end eigenclass.class_eval do attr_accessor symbol end end end My train of logic that equates the eigenclass with class.self is rather simple: class << self is a way of declaring class methods, rather than instance methods. It's a shortcut to def Foo.bar. So within the reference to the class object, returning self should be identical to self.class. This is because class << self would set self to Foo.class for definition of class methods/attributes. Am I just confused? Or, is this a sneaky trick of Ruby meta-programming?

I want to select the FundingCancellationReason corrersponding to minimum date for each funding. I wrote a query as follows.   Linux Assembly Tutorial states: there is one very important thing to remember: If you are planning to return from a procedure (with the RET instruction), don't jump to it! As in "never!" Doing that will cause a segmentation fault on Linux (which is OK – all your program does is terminate), but in DOS it may blow up in your face with various degrees of terribleness. But I cannot understand why does it causes a segmentation fault. it sounds just like returning from a function. I have a situation where I need to implement the logic "If X happens, call procedure A. Otherwise, call procedure B." Is there any other way than jumping around like a kangaroo weaving spaghetti code?

• View / ViewModel - what is the sense (in a WPF control)?

  Not as funny as it sounds. Normally the View / ViewModel should decouple the presentation from the business logic. Good. Now, a Control in WPF is basically invisible unless made different (with the exceptions of UserControl and Window that have XAML directly attached). The Style is putting in the "visual presentation" - which basically means a Control does not need a view mechanism as WPF already has one? In addition. the ViewModel is actually part of the Control, or? Just fighting with that stuff. I know in ASP.NET, WinForms the separation makes a lot of sense - but there, basically, controls HAVE an intrinsic look. In WPF, I have some where it makes sense (derived from UserControl), but for the majority of the controls I write, the View & ViewModel look like pretty much totally superflous thanks to the already presenting view mechanism.

  I got a class like this which gets returned from an ASP webservice: class Data { public int A { get; set; } public int B { get; set; } public int Sum { get { return A + B; } } } When I try to consume the webservice on the client side using Silverlight I only get the properties A and B but I also need Sum. I know I can't return any logic from a webservice, so the expected behavior was it will return the the Sum as a fixed/precalculated property in the client which is what I need. Any ideas except for redesigning my class? Thanks ...

• Account for cancelling an update process

  I'm trying to develop the logic of updating my (Java) application but I'm stuck on a particular problem. The user can, at any time, be it on purpose (by clicking the Cancel button) or unwillingly (system/power failure) cancel the update process. If the updater was busy downloading files or unpacking files and thus didn't make any changes to the main application yet, this can be easily recovered by re-downloading the files and continuing the update process like normally. But, how can i account for changes made to the main application (i.e. a file was only partially replaced, some files were corrupted, etc.) that result in a main application that can't be launched anymore? Is it possible to rollback the changes made during the update without having to keep a full backup of my application or without doing a full reinstall? Are there any standards for updating an application that can help me with this?

  Hi all, the business logic in my application requires me to insert a row in table X when a row is inserted in table Y. Furthermore, it should only do it between specific times(which I have to query another table for). I have considered running a script every 5 minutes or so to check this, but I stumbled upon triggers and figured this might be a better way to do it. But I find the syntax for procedures a little bewildering and I keep getting an error I have no idea how to fix. • Image as a background of a form in Delphi

  I'm using Delphi 2006. I have a few PNG images with transparencies and I have to create a GUI using them (top bar, left panel...). The images have different aligns properties. One of the images is the background of the form. The problem here is that I can't align it as alClient because it only occupies the rectangular zone that the other images have left, showing the naked canvas in their transparent zones. What I need is that the background image is put behind all the other images and taking all the canvas size. Is there anyway to do this? I know I can do this writting some logic in the OnResize event of the form but I was just curious if I was missing something. Thanks.

  We are tasked with migrating an existing set of entities (currently POCOs persisted with NHibernate against an MSSQL database) to now persist to some kind of web service (yet to be built, either RESTful or SOAP-based, and that we control). I like how NHibernate encapsulates the persistence concerns and lets us maintain a logic-rich, persistence-agnostic domain model. Is there any way to make NHibernate talk to a web service at the back end instead of a SQL database directly? In other words, can "service instead of SQL database" be treated as a persistence implementation detail and allow us to continue to use NHibernate? Am I asking the right question? :)

• jQuery: Listen to changes within a DIV and act accordingly

  I have a function that grabs an XML document and transforms it according to an XSL document. It then places the result into a div with the id laneconfigdisplay. What I want to do is, separate to the transformation logic, setup a jQuery change event for that div so I can tell when it has changed, and run some jQuery code. • How can I write faster JavaScript?

  I'm writing an HTML5 canvas visualization. According to the Chrome Developer Tools profiler, 90% of the work is being done in (program), which I assume is the V8 interpreter at work calling functions and switching contexts and whatnot. Other than logic optimizations (e.g., only redrawing parts of the visualization that have changed), what can I do to optimize the CPU usage of my JavaScript? I'm willing to sacrifice some amount of readability and extensibility for performance. Is there a big list I'm missing because my Google skills suck? I have some ideas but I'm not sure if they're worth it: Limit function calls When possible, use arrays instead of objects and properties Use variables for math operation results as much as possible Cache common math operations such as Math.PI / 180 Use sin and cos approximation functions instead of Math.sin() and Math.cos() Reuse objects when passing around data instead of creating new ones Replace Math.abs() with ~~ Study jsperf.com until my eyes bleed Use a preprocessor on my JavaScript to do some of the above operations
