  • Windows 7: Don't combine Taskbar Icons, but only display Icons

    I've never really liked this feature about Win7, but I guess I just got used to it. The feature I don't like is mousing over the win7 icons when there are multiple windows of the same type open. You have to waste that extra time choosing the window after it pops up and it's just clunky. The XP taskbar was nice, because you didn't have to go through any of this, but it had the problem where you ran out of taskbar space fast. I often resized my taskbar to take care of this. However, on Windows 7, I don't use up even 1/3 of my taskbar. I have all this space I can use, and instead it's all squished to the left, making me take extra steps. Are there any applications I can use to get this desired behavior, or else what route would you recommend to take to write this behavior myself? My first thought would be C# and the Windows taskbar apis. PS. If it's not clear what I'm asking for, please let me know, I'll try to be more specific.

    I first launch cheese and my webcam turns on. However I find it curious as video4linux states: In general, V4L2 devices can be opened more than once. When this is supported by the driver, users can for example start a "panel" application to change controls like brightness or audio volume, while another application captures video and audio. My webcam is seen in lspci as 058f:a014 Alcor Micro Corp. Asus Integrated Webcam, but I don’t even know what the underlying driver is, so I can’t check whether my problem is driver-related or not. Any input would be more than welcome!

  • How to auto-mount encfs volume on login in ubuntu 9.10

    Hi, Previously, in 9.04, I was using pam mount in conjunction with encfs to mount an encrypted volume at login. This worked perfectly and since the password was the same as my user password, none was entered besides the initial login one. Now in 9.10, using the same setup and the same volume line in pam's config file, the volume will not mount. The folder does not even get created for the mount point. I am thinking this might be caused by the fact that I now switched to using an encrypted /home directory (previously left unencrypted on 9.04). To encrypt it, i used the standard /home encrypt setup from the 9.10 fresh install. I am thinking that perhaps, pam tries to mount the volume before /home is mounted and fails. Is there a log file I could look into/post here? Note that mounting manually works fine using the same paths, writing full paths does not help, nor is removing the options attribute.     I have forwarded the port 5900 for TightVNC. I have TightVNC 2.0 Beta4 installed on my Windows Vista machine. I then try to connect from an Arch Linux box: [earlz@earlzarch ~]$ vncviewer somehost::5900 Connected to RFB server, using protocol version 3.8 Performing standard VNC authentication Password: Authentication successful vncviewer: VNC server closed connection [earlz@earlzarch ~]$ vncviewer --help TightVNC Viewer version 1.3.10 What is wrong here? I thought that TightVNC 2.0 fixed the Vista bug with VNC servers? Is there any additional configuration I needed?

  • Laptop Hard Drive Cable

    I am about to have to dig into my wifes laptop to pull the hard drive out to pull the data off since the rest of it is close to dieing. I am curious what I should expect to have to deal with to get data off the hard drive. I am assuming its a SATA drive. Do I need a special cable to connect a laptop SATA hard drive to the computer or should I be able to connect it to my desktop computer without issue? Thanks Josh Pennington

    I have to different ISPs, each on each own network. The main connects via ethernet and the secondary via wifi. The two networks have no relation at all. I just connect to them simultaneously. The reason I want to load balance between them is to achieve higher Internet speeds. Note: I have no advanced network hardware.   • HP Compaq nc8230 hackintosh?

    I have an HP Compaq nc8230 with a Pentium M (1.86GHz, SSE2) 1.5GB RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon x600 (64MB dedicated, 596MB shared). I'm trying to install Mac OS X Leopard on it. I have a legal copy of Leopard from apple, so I tried using the generic.iso and putting in the Leo DVD when it tells me to. It gets to the Apple logo with the spinny thing for maybe 5 minutes, but then the computer just restarts. I don't get past the apple logo. Then I tried using iDeneb 1.3 (10.5.5) but it doesn't boot into the DVD. My computer just ignores it and moves onto the hard drive. I would appreciate some help with either methods (moat prefferably the more legal one), I really need an intel Mac, my PowerBook G4 just doesn't cut it.

For example, I have an octagon or a heptagon and I want it to be transformed into something resembling a circle. if you know such software, please, let me know. Thank You!     I have installed Office 2010 Professional Plus Beta trial (x64 version) from MSFT site. Every thing worked fine initially. But after I rebooted machine (Win7 x64), and started Outlook 2010, i see an error dialog that I am not in a "corporate network" and the product could not be activated. I am not in a corporate network. I would like to use Office 2010 on my home network. How do I get around the Product Activation issue?

  • What is causing random hard freezes on my system? Kaspersky?

    The last few weeks I experienced a new strange behavior of my computer. Sometimes Windows 7 just freezes with no real reason at all. While listening to music for example the playback hangs and you can hear a very nasty sound. Neither mouse nor keyboard input is handled and everything is just stuck. Using Ubuntu this does not happen, so I think it is just a matter of driver issues or a Windows 7 bug. Furthermore I am really suspicious about Kaspersky (Internet Security 11) and so I let it perform a complete virus scan while no other app is running. At about 50% it happened again and I needed to restart the computer by holding the power button the bad way... A really weird thing is that playing Skyrim this happened once, however music playback did not stop. Only the framerate dropped to 0 and sometimes for a few seconds I am able to move. Therefore I am really confused as furthermore no bluescreen pops up. Memtest told me that everything seems to be alright... Can anyone explain me which data you need about my hardware and software (and which tools tools to use to gather the informatik) to be able to provide any help on my problem?

    I know it has been asked before, but I would like it to happen in real time and transparently (without the need to open a separate FTP client such as FileZilla). For example, if I edit a text file in the local folder and then save it, it should immediately detect it and push the changes to the remote folder. It can be unidirectional (changes made on the local folder has to be pushed to the remote folder but the reverse is not necessary). It should also be able to specify some excluded files/folders which do not need to be in sync. Is there such an application that you know of?

  • Create firewall "profiles" for Windows 7

    Is there any way to configure a couple of firewall profiles in Windows 7? As I use mobile broadband on when traveling, I don't want virus scanner/windows updates etc running and chewing up my mobile data allocation. So would love to find a way to block everything except email ports and perhaps http. The kicker though is that when I'm back in the office, I want to just click a button to get my original firewall settings back. In the office I use WiFi and on the road tether to my android phone, also via WiFi, so can't restrict via network interface. Any ideas?

    I bought a Samsung SA550 monitor as a second monitor for my 2009 MacBook Pro that is running OSX 10.7 Lion. The monitor has 2 outputs, VGA and HDMI. If I connect using VGA everything is fine. If I connect using HDMI-DVI cable, and DVI-to-mini display converter I get static and flickering: The DVI-to-mini display converter that I use: I have used this converter with a different monitor that had a DVI output port a while ago, so at least it used to work once upon a time. I am not sure if this problem is because of that converter or not. I have never used a monitor with an HDMI output before. Appreciate your help. Thank you!

  • Destination host unreachable - Windows Server 2008

    Hi There, I'm working with a windows 2008 domain controller, which I'm having issues connecting to internet resources. A small bit of background, this is a 2008 domain controller that has been added into an existing Win 2k domain, with a goal of replacing the older computers. Both of the older controllers can still access internet resources, and so can all the clients. When I ping Google.ca from the new server, it does resolve to an ip address, but then says "Reply from 192.168.123.20: Destination host unreachable." I'm really at a lost now, I've checked and rechecked my ip configuration, the default gateway is my router, the primary DNS server is the my DC, and the secondary DNS is also my router. The DNS server on the domain has a forwarder added for the router as well. Everything on my local network works just fine, all my internal resources can be resolved. For the time being, I've stopped the Firewall service. I'm not 100% used to Server 2008 yet, but it might be a case of just missing something simple. Thanks for your time.

    This one is driving me nuts. Hoping someone can shed some light. I'm running windows 7 using onboard audio. It's been fine for over 2 years but lately there's a problem every time I play audio. I hear a small soft burst of static and the volume turns itself down from 50% to 23%. Once at 23%, it plays fine. No related events logged in viewer. No reported problems with the device. Different headphones, same problem. I played around with audio settings for hours but the problem persists. EDIT: ok more info: Motherboard: ECS G31T-M LGA775 System info displays this: Name High Definition Audio Device Manufacturer Microsoft Status OK PNP Device ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_1106&DEV_E721&SUBSYS_10192683&REV_1001\4&3D4E739&0&0001 Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\hdaudio.sys (6.1.7600.16385, 297.00 KB (304,128 bytes), 14/07/2009 9:51 AM) I'll keep adding info as I find it. The question I want resolved is; Is it faulty hardware? If so, I can buy a sound card. I can't imagine software is responsible since I haven't installed anything new for weeks. Virus scans are clear as well. The static burst is irritating to say the least. Tried 2 different headphones and separate speakers. Same problem. I know it's not an easy problem but I was hoping someone had encountered the same thing.

  • can't find phpdoc binary?

    i've downloaded the phpdoc from their site, extracted it and put it in apache's documentroot for access through the web browser. however, i cant access the "phpdoc" tool from the command line. i have to add it to a Path but i cant find it in the extracted folder. where is it?
