  • Looking for a NTP Server Software for Windows

    I'm looking for a, preferably free, NTP Server for Windows Server 2003/2008. We have already tried the built in Windows Time Server, but our tests did show that it is not very accurate, we see time differences up to 500ms. The max time difference we can allow for our application is ~100ms. Now we have already used the Meinberg NTPd for Windows. It works great except we have one big issue with it: If there is a network connection problem between the client and server, the ntp server is in a panic state It won't give the client a new time until we restart the ntp service. This is a big issue which has caused us some trouble. It was working fine for months until there was a network problem we didn't notice, we only noticed it after a week when the time difference was already 30 sec. on the clients. So please suggest some alternative NTP Server for windows. I did Google but I get a lot of unrelated search results. Edit: So far the ntpd windows version was very accurate and I'd like to stick with it. The only problem is the "panic state" after a network disconnect. Maybe some knows here what the cause of this is and how to fix it. Also, I forgot to mention that we have a server/client setup like this: Server1 -- Server2 -- Server3 -- Client1 -- Client2 -- Client3 So Server2 gets its time from Server1, Server3 gets its time from Server2, and the Clients get their time from Server3. Also, there are clients connected directly to Server2. It is important that all Servers and Clients have the exact same time (within ~100ms) Now there was a network problem with Server3 and its clients. The servers run the ntpd port for Windows, which acts as NTP server and client. The clients have Dimension4 as NTP client. After the network problem, the error message in D4 was something like this (out the top of my head, don't have the exact error message): Server response: The server is in a panic state (could not sync clock) I read through the ntpd docs, and the only mention of "panic" is when the time difference is 10000 seconds which will cause to exit the ntpd server but this was not the case. Also there is a "-g" command line switch to disable the panic exit, but it is already set by default. Any ideas what could cause the panic state and how to get rid of it next time?

  • Windows iScsi software initiator automatic reconnect

    I am using sofware iscsi initiator in windows server 2008 r2 to connect to a san. Everything works fine. But issue is if at time of boot san is not available it's not adding drives. It stays in reconnecting status when san is available. I have to manually disconnect and connect to get it working. How can i make it automatically connect when san is available.

    I have 2 windows vista computers on a lan, can i set them up with a program so that they replicate the data written in one partition to another and the other way around. basically replicating data across 2 partitions whenever each is modified. Making that data is available on the network when either of the computers are turned on, when both are, data is synchronized. Is this posible?

    My company has over service through Verizon, and AT&T Service in the area is "shoddy" at its best, so I haven't been able to join the "iPhone party" like so many of my fellow system administrators have been able to. That being said, this week finally a phone I like has hit Verizon, the HTC Incredible. (I've been waiting for the Desire or Nexus One, but after seeing spec sheets and reviews, HTC Incredible comes out ahead anyway).     I am running Windows 7 and have adjusted something which has caused all of my shortcuts and program icons to show the same program namely Adobe Reader and when I click on any of the icon or shortcuts they only open Adobe reader, I have reinstalled Windows 7 But this has made no change, I posted this question yesterday but apparently with not enough information I hope this is better and someone can help.

  • Software/FakeRAID: Windows 8 Disk Mirroring vs Intel Onboard

    So Windows 8 is out and I have a new motherboard. I wish to create a RAID 1 coupling between two HDDs -- for storage purposes only (my OS is on an SSD) -- but I don't know which is the best route to take. My motherboard (Z77 chipset) comes with the age old Intel Fake RAID, but since I only wish to use my RAID for storage, I wondered if I might be better to use Windows 8 Disk Mirroring. Can anyone advise which is better? Or perhaps the pros and cons of each, if that's too contentious? I just can't see the benefit of FakeRAID.     I'm trying to gather some ammunition about my ISP and it's aggressive traffic shaping of particular websites. So I'm looking for an application that will allow me to see what speeds I get to particular websites. I want to open a browser connection to a particular video streaming website for example and see the speed of the connection that gets made, be it http or plain tcp. I'm after something along the lines of TCPView but unfortunately this doesn't include transfer speeds. I'm half tempted to write one myself but hopefully something will already be out there that does the job.

  • Laptop Backup Software (Corporate)?

    I wondered if any of you who have a fleet of laptops are using anything to back them up, and if so what? In particular I'm looking for a solution that is totally hands-off once installed i.e. the user doesn't have to do anything, press anything, remember to change something when their domain password changes etc. Right now we use Druva Insync which I have to say is pretty damned good, however our license is up for renewal in a couple of months so I want to be sure it's the best solution before renewing - the only other vaguely comparable product that I know of is from Atempo but the cost of a SQL Server license is a big problem there.     I have a Dell All-in-One 810 printer from years ago and only recently installed it (a few months ago). Later I had reason to uninstall and re-install the printer but whenever I connect the printer Windows installs the printer drivers from its cache without the CD. How can I remove all traces of the drivers from the cache so that it will install only from the CD and not from the Windows driver cache?

    Have a few people working in an office and then a few more people working from home. We would all like to video chat skype-style, but for the people in the office, everything that is said by someone in the same room "echos". The echo is because the hear it one time through the actual air, and then again through their headphones or speakers: Unsure of the best way to solve this problem, but one way seems to be to use an application that enables the user to mute audio from another participant. Then the people in the office could mute all audio from other people in the same room, thus removing the echo effect. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks so much!

    A few years back, I saw an open-source application that created fault-tolerant, multi-CD backup sets. The thought was that if a few sectors went bad on one CD, the data could be reconstructed from others similar to a RAID 5 hard-drive setup. I did some searching and I could not find the application again. Does anyone know of a application that works in this manner. It needs to work with both CDs & DVDs. Linux or Windows will be OK.

    I sometimes get .mp4 and other video formats whose aspect ratio is clearly off What apps do you use to reconvert such videos to an aspect ratio better suited to to fit either a regular desktop or LCD screen size? Hopefully with little or no loss of audio/video quality Any instructions on best settings to use would be very welcome. I have so far mostly used vlc which came off with less-than-ideal results.   • Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

    Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.
