is it good "form" to declare new classes in the same file ?

I code in Python a lot, and I frequently create classes. Now, I'm not sure if this is good Python form, but I just declare a class in the same file as my main(). class foo { ... } I'm wondering if it's good form in Java to do the same? For example, class foo { public static int name; public static int numPoints; public static int[] points; } public class bar { public static void main(String[] args) { ... } } Does not throw errors in Eclipse, so it must be allowed. But is it okay to do? Would it be better to just declare this class in a separate file..? Edit: I just want to emphasize that my new class literally is just a container to hold the same type of data multiple times, and literally will only have like 3 values. So it's total about 5 lines of code. The question is - does this merit a new file?

Variable pre-fixes, Visual Studio 2010 onwards?

I'm a bit bewildered on this subject, as I relate variable prefixes to being a thing of the past now, but with Visual Studio 2010 onwards (I'm currently using 2012), do people still do this and why? I only ask because, these days, you can hover over any variable and it'll tell you the variable type and scope. There's literally no requirement for pre-fixing being there for readability. By this I mean: string strHello int intHello etc. And I'm being language/tool biased here - as Visual Studio takes a lot of the legwork out for you in terms of seeing exactly what type the variable is, including after conversions in the code. This is not a "general programming" question.

Are booleans as method arguments unacceptable?

A colleague of mine states that booleans as method arguments are not acceptable. They shall be replaced by enumerations. At first I did not see any benefit, but he gave me an example. What's easier to understand? file.writeData( data, true ); Or enum WriteMode { Append, Overwrite }; file.writeData( data, Append ); Now I got it! ;-) This is definitely an example where an enumeration as second parameter makes the code much more readable. So, what's your opinion on this topic?

What code commenting style should I use for both C++ and C# ?

Hi, I was recently hired in a company. They have a lot of C++ and C# code source files and almost one different commenting style per file. (Well this is exagerated, but you have the picture) This morning, I show my new collegues how my personnal code was commented and how easy it was to generate a documentation from it (I use Doxygen). I somehow convinced them to use a coherent commenting style. I would suggest using Doxygen for C++ source files and native C# style commenting style for C# files. However, I'm not sure that's the best solution here. Are you aware of a commenting style that would work for both C++ and C# allowing us to generate a documentation from it ? If so, what software/tool should we use ? Having a solution that would work on Linux platforms as well would be even better. Thank you very much.

Having an issue with overwriting an element of a file correctly (numeric)

This is an ATM style program, but currently it doesn't do exactly what I need it to do... I need to get the current balance, and when money is transferred from either checking or savings, it should add it to checking and subtract it from savings. which is does, but not correctly... 'Content' is NOT 'Text' in XAML

One of the key concepts in XAML is that the Content property of a XAML control like a Button or ComboBoxItem does not have to contain just textual data. In fact, Content can be almost any other XAML that you want. To illustrate here is a simple example of how to spruce up your Button controls in Silverlight. Here is some very simple XAML that consists of two Button controls within a StackPanel on a Silverlight User Control. <StackPanel> <Button Name="btnHome" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Content="Home" /> <Button Name="btnLog" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> The XAML listed above will produce a Silverlight control within a Browser that looks like Figure 1. Figure 1: Normal button controls are quite boring. With just a little bit of refactoring to move the button attributes into Styles, we can make the buttons look a little better. I am a big believer in Styles, so I typically create a Resources section within my user control where I can factor out the common attribute settings for a particular set of controls. Here is a Resources section that I added to my Silverlight user control. <UserControl.Resources> <Style TargetType="Button" x:Key="NormalButton"> <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment" Value="Left" /> <Setter Property="MinWidth" Value="50" /> <Setter Property="Margin" Value="10" /> </Style></UserControl.Resources> Now back in the XAML within the Grid control I update the Button controls to use the Style attribute and have each button use the Static Resource called NormalButton. <StackPanel> <Button Name="btnHome" Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}" Content="Home" /> <Button Name="btnLog" Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}" Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> With the additional attributes set in the Resources section on the Button, the above XAML will now display the two buttons as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Use Resources to Make Buttons More Consistent Now let’s re-design these buttons even more. Instead of using words for each button, let’s replace the Content property to use a picture. As they say… a picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s take advantage of that. Modify each of the Button controls and eliminate the Content attribute and instead, insert an <Image> control with the <Button> and the </Button> tags. Add a ToolTip to still display the words you had before in the Content and you will now have better looking buttons, as shown in Figure 3. (Actually, I think it make us more desirable as programmers and improves computer science) To improve, we read a lot of books; for example, programming style, how to solve problems, how to approach problems, software and algorithms, et al. Can I learn your technique? In other words, if someone gives you a problem, at first step, what are you doing to solve it? I want learn the style in which you approach, analyze, and solve a problem. EDIT: every programmer is a unique instance; each of us approach problems and converge on solutions in our own... idiomatic manner. This manner is sometimes a quirk of training, a bias of tools, but often it is an insightful nugget, a little golden hammer that cracks nuts just slightly faster then others. When answering, give your general approaches but also take a moment to identify how you look at things in ways that your peers do not. Let's call this your Unique Solving Perspective, or USP.

How to tell your boss that his programming style is really bad?

I'm a student and in my spare time I'm working for a big enterprise as Java developer. The job is good, but the problem is, my boss is writing very strange code. I don't want to complain, but some issues are in my opinion really strange. For example: he doesn't know any booleans. All boolean conditions are Strings called "YesOrNo" and then in the condition he uses if (YesOrNo == "Yes") there are a lot of very strange characters in method names and variables like é õ ô or è all loops are infinite loops in the style of for(;;). Then at the end of the loop the condition is tested and if the conditions is fulfilled break; is called. I don't now if I should tell him that I think this isn't a good practice, since he is my boss and decides how and what to do. On the other hand some of this examples are really very weird. Any hints how to cope with? And is this only me who thinks that's bad style?

'EditItem' is not allowed for this view - databinding issue

Hi, I am trying to do data binding in WPF on data grid using a cutom list. My custom list class contains a private data list of type List. I can not expose this list however the indexers are exposed for seeting and getting individual items. My custom class looks like this: public abstract class TestElementList<T> : IEnumerable where T : class { protected List<T> Data { get; set; } public virtual T Get(int index) { T item = Data[index]; return item; } public virtual void Set(int index, T item) { Data[index] = item; } ... } The data is binded but when I try to edit it, i get "'EditItem' is not allowed for this view." Error. On doing extensive searching over web, I found that i might need to implement IEditableCollectionView interface also. Can anybody please help me to either give pointers on how to implement this interface or any suggest any other better way to do databinding on custom list. Thanks in advance.

C# HttpListener Prefix issue with anything other than localhost

Hello, I'm trying to use C# and HttpListener with a prefix of anything other than localhost and it fails (i.e. if I give it "server1", i.e. h t t p : / / l o c a l h o s t : 1 2 3 4 works, but h t t p : / / s e r v e r 1 : 1 2 3 4 fails (sorry, but the site thinks I'm trying to spam... the spaces are there because of that...) The code is... HttpListener listener = new HttpListener(); String prefix = "h t t p : / / s e r v e r 1 : 1 2 3 4/"; listener.Prefixes.Add(prefix); listener.Start(); The failure occurs on listener.Start() with an exception of "Access is denied.". Any ideas? Thanks!

jQuery FullCalendar JSON date issue

I am integrating jQuery plugin FullCalendar, overall it has been really straightforward. I however have ran into a problem with adding events to the calendar. I am using ASP.NET MVC 1.0 and have found and followed this post. I am returning JSON to the FullCalendar and the events are getting bound, but they all show up as all day events. I am formatting the dates as ISO8601 format. Also, when I click on second row, firstly first row fires the event and then the second row fires it and shows the nested grid. Please help.

TTThumbsViewController + navigationController issue

Hi, .. 2 questions. I am only using Three20 for a gallery in my app. When I push my .. : TTThumbsViewController from another view, the navigation bar is not the color I want it to be (as per the rest of my app). I have set up a TTDefaultStyleSheet as per this stackoverflow QA. Is there something special I have to do as I am only using the TTThumbsViewController? The thumbs view is also created with extra space at the top, as though it is leaving room for a navigation controller, without knowing that one is already there. How can I tell the TTThumbsViewController to use the existing uinavigationcontroller? Or behave as though it is? Safari Extjs grid rendering issue

Hello: Here is a simple illustration of what I mean. It works in IE, and FF, but not in Safari. I have four panels which are dynamically added to a tabpanel item. Three are grid panels, and one is a form panel. I need to preserve the grids proportions or sizes. I tried several layout methods (table, column, absolute etc), and nothing seems work so far. For table layout, all sizes end up being the same width. It seems my best bet is column layout, and they seem to render properly in FF, IE, but not in Safari as shown in the image. (Here it seems that column goes to second row, when the item does not fit into the current row). Initially, the title bar, and several of the column headings does not show. Any suggestions. Thank you.

ASP.NET AJAX ToolkitScriptManager Issue With Combining Scripts

When I changed the CombineScripts property to true my ASP.NET AJAX control extenders are no longer working. What is the reason for this weired behavior and is there a fix for this?

WPF derived ComboBox SelectedValuePath issue

In our application we have a very large set of data that acts as our data dictionary for ComboBox lists, etc. This data is staticly cached and keyed off of 2 variables, so I thought it wise to write a control that derived from ComboBox and exposed the 2 keys as DPs. When those 2 keys have proper values I set the ItemsSource of the ComboBox automatically from the data dictionary list it corresponds to. I also automatically set the SelectedValuePath and DisplayMemberPath to Code and Description, respectively. Here's how an example of how an item in the ItemsSource from the data dictionary list always looks: public class DataDictionaryItem { public string Code { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public string Code3 { get { return this.Get.Substring(0, 3); } } } The value of Code is always 4 bytes long, but sometimes I only need to bind 3 bytes of it. Hence, the Code3 property. Here's how the code looks inside my custom combobox to set the ItemsSource: private static void SetItemsSource(CustomComboBox combo) { if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(combo.Key1) || string.IsNullOrEmpty(combo.Key2)) { combo.ItemsSource = null; return; } List<DataDictionaryItem> list = GetDataDictionaryList(combo.Key1, combo.Key2); combo.ItemsSource = list; } Now, my problem is, when I change the SelectedValuePath in the XAML to Code3, it doesn't work. What I bind to SelectedValue still gets the full 4 character Code from DataDictionaryItem. I even tried rerunning SetItemsSource when the SelectedValuePath was changed and no dice. Can anyone see what I need to do to get my custom combobox to wake up and use the SelectedValuePath provided if it's overridden in the XAML? Tweaking the value in the property setter in my SelectedValue bound business object is not an option.

AutoMapper Mapping IEnumerable to DataReader Issue

I am using AutoMapper to datareader using code as discussed below http://elegantcode.com/2009/10/16/mapping-from-idatareaderidatarecord-with-automapper/ I see it being very flakky...and unpredictable. 1) Same code with same datareader at times brings value back to the dto result set and at times doesnot. 2) I have an ID value coming from database as 100, 200. When it maps to the DTO that is of type integer this 100 is changed to a large value (like 234343211). Any ideas on why am I seeing this inconsitency. Should I be using the standard while (reader.Read())? and stop using automapper?
