• Windows XP failing to set theme correctly on auto-login

  On several testing machines we have, when automatic login (as Administrator) is activated, Windows fails to set theme (Display properties - Themes) correctly. Particularly, even if theme is set to "Windows Classic", visually it's obvious that "Windows XP" is applied (the one with blue title bars and red "X" butons). I have only seen this happen when Auto-login is set--we always use Administrator on XP. Even if I log out and back in manually, theme is set correctly. Apart from logging out and in, it's also possible to reset theme in "Display properties". It does not happen in 100% of the cases, but it's way over 50%. Definitely it's often enough to be annoying. I believe this is a bug in Windows XP. I have never encountered it on other Windows versions. Does anybody know how to avoid this issue once forever? (Or can anybody provide explanation, relevant links, etc.?)

• how to create a simple radio station [on hold]

  I've been digging around for ages but not getting very far so any links or tips would be massively appreciated. I want to create a central "radio station" in my home to stream one playlist to any computers pointing their browser to the ip within my internal network. I have an old mini slave mac mini running ubuntu and was originally thinking I could get php and apache to handle this but then quickly realised that of course, php will serve out streaming independently per connection ie no radio station. Are there any servers already built for this sort of behaviour? is shoutcast one of the only versions Thanks, John

• Yahoo toolbar and local sites (e.g. Intranet)

  We have local sites running on IIS in regular MS Windows network. User base has IE, FireFox and Chrome. Local sites are isolated by host headers and DNS record created for the common IP accordingly. This is a regular set-up. Users without Yahoo Toolbar type http://intranet and the sites resolves. Users with Yahoo toolbar type http://intranet and the toolbar goes off to search for this site in public domain. This is irrespective to whether the address is typed into the browser address bar or the toolbar. All versions of toolbar and IE are affected. I cannot see a setting on the toolbar to switch this "irritating" behaviour off and simply un-installing the toolbar is not an option. Any ideas?

• Quake 3 won't install on Windows 7

  Today I tried to install Quake 3 from my original 1999 CD on a Windows 7 laptop. Windows 7 resolutely refused to run the installer, helpfully explaining that I might need a 32- or 64-bit version, depending on what my OS is (you have to love those Windows error messages: absolutely correct, but as unhelpful as humanly possible). In any case, of course the 1999 software is 32-bit, and the laptop is 64-bit. But I was pretty sure that 64-bit Windows versions could handle running 32-bit software. What gives?

• Are there ways to write php/python code to run as hooks in the Apache Request Processing pipeline?

  Does anybody know of any modules that provide the functionality to write python or PHP code to run as hooks in the Apache request processing pipeline? For instance, mod_perl lets me write PerlModules, which can contain handlers for the header parsing phase, content delivery, and even filters. I would like to do something similar in other scripting languages. I could write it in C, but the goal is to deploy a module that would work across a number of systems. If I deliver it as binary in C, then it would require 64/32-bit versions and some other issues. With perl, I can just require certain modules installed and mod_perl2.

• .VBS scripts have stopped running... No idea why!

  We have two .vbs scripts that are run by our Task Scheduler that have suddenly stopped working for no reason we can fathom. We haven't significantly altered our system configuration in the last 24 hours, and the scripts have run without a hitch for months. According to the Task Scheduler the scripts just keep running and never stop, which is never the case. I stopped all running versions through the Scheduler and manually attempted to run one of the .vbs scripts. I got the following error message: Line: 15 Error: The system cannot locate the resource specified. Code: 800C0005 Source: msxml3.dll Line 15 (or 16 to be more accurate - line 15 itself is blank, but so is line 1) is: xml.Send Would could have suddenly caused this? Looking in system32\ and sysWOW64\ shows that msxml3.dll exists. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks a lot!

This overloading of functions makes it difficult for users to handle the complexity.   Hi. I really need help debugging an error I'm getting with Passenger on Apache. I've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.4 and have Apache, Ruby and Passenger installed. • Have apache choose a php version based on the extension in the url, but with a single file on the filesystem

  I want to configure a local apache server to serve php files with different php versions. In my document root I have phpinfo.php, now if I go to http://localhost/phpinfo.php4, I want to see the phpinfo.php file processed with php4, if I go to http://localhost/phpinfo.php5 I want to see the same file processed with php5. Note: both php 4 and 5 are already installed side by side, I have no problem configuring apache to treat files that have a .php4 or .php5 extension on the filesystem with the correct php version. What I want is for apache to do the following: If the url-path ends in .php5, serve the file which has a .php extension on the filesystem using the application/x-httpd-php5 handler. If the url-path ends in .php4, serve the same file with the .php extension on the filesystem using the application/x-httpd-php4 handler.

• Norton Ghost usage, Linux? ISO? Server? MBR?

  Before evaluating Symantec/Norton Ghost to image partitions, I have a couple of questions about using this tool: In the product page, it only mentions Windows: Can Norton image Linux partitions as well? Can I burn an ISO to create/recover images? The ISO's I found seem only able to restore an image but not create one. Does it mean that images can only be created from within a running Windows? For Windows partitions: Does it support both regular and Server versions? Acronis doesn't image Server partitions in the regular version When restoring an image, does Norton give the option of including/excluding the MBR? Thank you.

  People entering college today have never known a world without an Internet. HTML was invented 1980, that's more than thirty years ago or 1.5 generations. But plain text mails are still common despite all their problems: Encoding issues Wrapped code segments No links No way to use the "a picture says more than a thousand words" lore Most of the security risks are now handled by the underlying browser engine and smart settings like: Don't allow JavaScript in mails Don't execute attachments Don't download external resources (like web bugs) On top of that, only very few people still read mail only in command line tools like Mutt. Knowing Mutt myself, I'm pretty sure you can configure it to display HTML mail with, say, w3m. On top of that, most HTML mail capable clients send two versions of the mail (pure text with an HTML attachment). I'm not sure if there are any people left on the planet which still use a 56kbit modem to access their mail accounts. So what reasons are left to stick with plain text mails in 2011?

I'd like to encrypt part of one partition, leaving the rest of the partition accessible. I would very much like to avoid programs like Norton partition magic (which resize/split partitions), because every time I used them I had problems with the data stored. Question Is there any way/builtin alternative/3rd party app that integrates with windows login to encrypt one subset of a partition? EDIT I heard horror stories about EFS, which is why I don't want to use it, unless there have been improvements on reliability with windows 8. Some highlights from that article: In fact I’ve only used EFS twice in the last ten years on my own computers and on both occasions I’ve lost files and documents. I therefore cannot recommend you ever encrypt your files with this Windows feature. Unfortunately, because of incompatibilities with some differing versions of EFS files can end up scrambled and unrecoverable.

• if a usb pen drive has 64349 cylinders, is it damaged?

  I have a 4Gb USB pen drive that I'm trying to format with FAT32. When I run fdisk, it gives me this message: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 64349. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) I've tried deleting the partition table, creating new partitions, etc, but they never work. Sometimes I can write to the drive the first time I use it after formatting it, but then it becomes read-only in both Windows and Linux. I've tried this on multiple computers. Am I doing something wrong, or is the drive reporting an incorrect number of cylinders? Is the drive itself likely to be corrupted, and is there anyway to fix this under Windows Vista or Linux? • Minimum size of a boot partition on debian

  I'm setting up an old box with Debian. First etch (4.0), because this is the last version that still had boot floppies, then the box is to be upgraded to lenny (5.0) and squeeze (6.0). Therefore, I will end up having a a couple of different kernel versions in the boot partition. If I don't want to be wasteful and if I end up needing a separate boot partition, how large should it be? I've used 10 MB long ago, but that was woody, and only one kernel in the boot partition, and this seems to be too small for what I want to do now.

I already know that Microsoft now requires you to enter a key before even starting the installation process, and that it tries to connect to the Internet and activate this key as soon as possible. Sometimes, though, you don't have Internet connection when installing Windows 8. What then? Can you install Windows? Can you use it? What are the limitations?   I've recently upgraded from XP Pro to Windows7 Pro - In XP Pro (and previous OS versions) you could move Thumbnails around in a window and they would snap/shuffle up/re-order themselves and be viewable as a slide show - it was unbelievably useful - I used it EVERY day, Windows 7 doesn't do this? Is there some setting I can change or is it just not there anymore? I use it for organising photo libraries for archiving - I haven't found any other way of doing this that suits my work. • Multiple SSH private keys for the same host

  How can I store 2 different private SSH keys for the same host? I have tried 2 entries in /etc/ssh/ssh_config for the same host with the different keys, and I've also tried to put both keys in the same file and referencing it from one hosts setting, however both do not work. More detail: I'm running Ubuntu server (12.04) and I want to connect to GitHub via SSH to download the latest source for my projects. There are multiple projects running on the same server and each project has a GitHub repo with it's own unique deloyment key-pair. So the host is always the same (github.com) but the keys need to be different depending on which repo I'm using. Different /etc/ssh/ssh_config versions I have tried: Host github.com IdentityFile /etc/ssh/my_project_1_github_deploy_key StrictHostKeyChecking no Host github.com IdentityFile /etc/ssh/my_project_2_github_deploy_key StrictHostKeyChecking no and this with both keys in the same file: Host github.com IdentityFile /etc/ssh/my_project_github_deploy_keys StrictHostKeyChecking no I've had no luck with either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Amazon Linux AMI release 2010.11.1 corresponds to which RHEL version (4/5/6)?

  I am using the default Amazon Linux AMI in an EC2 instance - Amazon Linux AMI release 2010.11.1. I can see that it's a Redhat based system, but after trying many tools (/etc/issues, uname -a, lsb_release), I cannot tell which version of RHEL or CentOS is it based on. I need to get some packages that are not available in Amazon's package repos. I have list of custom yum repos that I can use, but since I don't know which RHEL version is the Amazon AMI based on, I cannot choose from different versions of repos. How can I find whether it's running RHEL 4/5/6 (or their CentOS counterparts)?

• Which SATA controller is better to use with Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit?

  We're preforming some hardware upgrade on our server machines. As a part of this process, we have to install some additional disk drives. Unfortunately, total number of drives will become 7 or 8, while all of our motherboards have only 6 SATA ports. Obviously, we need additional disk controllers. For now, we've tested Silicon Image (actually, no-name) and Adaptec controllers, both on SiI3132 chip, and got some problems with drivers for them: Silicon Image drivers are not installing at all, and Adaptec ones are installing, but the system says they're not signed and becomes unbootable. We're tryed both drivers from controllers' CD's and latest versions from manufacturers' websites, and no luck. So, can you recommend some SATA controllers that will really work without tambourine dances on mentioned OS (we need just 2 SATA ports and PCI-E, while RAID and any other features are no-matter)? • CPU clock scales down so computer is unusable after switching to battery

  When I am plugged in my laptop runs great however when I unplug it and I'm on battery power my CPU clock speed scales down pretty much all the way. I know this is happening by monitoring the clock speed. When plugged in it will usually stay between 1000MHz and 3000MHz but when I unplug it it quickly scales down to less than 500MHz and will get as low as 100MHz and it will NEVER scale up at all on battery power. After I plug the power back in it will then begin operating normally in about a minute. I have tried setting the MIN and MAX CPU performance in power options to 100% and have tried messing around with cooling settings which seemed to be a problem with HP laptops. I have a Toshiba Satellite M500-ST6444 running Windows 7. The BIOS is up to date. I have tried two versions.

• USB MFP print server that works with Windows x64?

  Right now, we are using the Longshine LCS-MFP101-2 to connect to our MFP device (printer/scanner combo) over LAN. However, the required driver (RMVUSB, Remote Virtual USB) cannot be installed on 64 bit Windows operating systems such as Windows XP x64 or Windows 7 x64. Since the distributor lists the product as "phased out", I do not expect any updated 64 bit drivers any time soon. :/ Because of that, I am searching for a relatively cheap SOHO MFP print server (1 USB port should be enough) which can be used with 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows. Do you have any ideas or recommendations? Thanks!
