• Is it possible to use the IE10 App without making Internet Explorer the default browser?

  Windows 8 comes with two versions of Internet Explorer: the normal desktop version, which looks just like IE9, and the Modern UI version, which is a full-screen tablet-style app. By default, links opened in desktop mode open in desktop IE, and links opened in Modern UI apps open in the full-screen app. When you set a new default browser (like Google Chrome, which has a Modern UI mode now), you can no longer access IE10 in the Modern UI at all - the tile disappears from the start screen, and there's no way to manually invoke it. I don't use IE10 much, but I'd like to have access to it in Metro mode, because it's handy for testing things out. I don't want to have IE be my default browser though. Is there any way to get the IE10 "App" to show up without setting IE to be the default browser everywhere?

• Does Chrome include ANGLE for WebGL?

  I would like to try out WebGL on a laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, WinXP/32, DirectX 9.0c. Some time ago I have gotten it to work with Firefox and software rendering. However, I heard about ANGLE and that some versions of Chrome support it. So I installed Chrome 11, canary build. Does that support ANGLE? Do I somehow need to activate it? Because, all WebGL pages that I tried with canary build say something like: "Failed to initialize WebGL"

• Is it possible to spoof the From: field in Outlook?

  I am wondering if it is possible to change the From: field (not just the reply-to) in Outlook (specifically in the 2010 beta, but also interested in other versions). I am just moving over from Linux and am used to being able to do this quite simply in some clients. At first I thought it was the option of "Other E-Mail address" on the From drop down menu in a compose window, but that seems to do... nothing! I want to be able to do this so I can have email look like it comes from a domain I own but do not wish to run an SMTP server on.

• Why does a Windows 7 installation grow so seriously and how to shring it?

  I store all my data and the most of applications (those legally available in "portable" versions) on drive D: and only use drive C: for the Windows system and some heavily integrated applications like MS Office, Visual Studio, Adobe Reader, Flash Player etc. When I was using Windows XP, 50 GiB drive C: was more than enough. Now, as I've mitigated to Windows 7, it hardly is. Yesterday as I've checked, 7 GiBs were free on drive C:. Then I've installed fresh Windows updates (which were just some tens of MiBs to download) and checked again: now there are only 2 GiBs free. Where have 5 GiBs gone? PS: Don't be surprised my system installation takes actually that much: I've got Visual Studio and SQL Server with complete offline documentation library, but that doesn't explain where does free space disappear on simple Windows updates. PPS: I use an augmented CCleaner version to clean my PC every day, so there are for sure no temporary internet files of recycle bin trash files taking the place.

• Updating PHP on a Plesk managed Server

  I just updated PHP and MySQl on my VPS with the current Versions from Atomic Repo. Everything worked out fine so far. From console I get the new PHP 5.3: [root@server phpMyAdmin]# php -v PHP 5.3.16 (cli) (built: Aug 20 2012 11:18:05) Copyright (c) 1997-2012 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies with the ionCube PHP Loader v4.0.5, Copyright (c) 2002-2011, by ionCube Ltd. But through Apache I still get the old version (5.1.6). The server is running some old version of crappy Plesk Panel. That gives me the option to choose between Apache Modul, fCGI and CGI-BIN. Any hints, how to update apache, so it will use the new PHP Version? EDIT: I just needed to restart httpd (/etc/init.d/httpd restart)

  The compare function in Word 2007 is very handy -- is there a similar capability in Excel 2007? I can't seem to find it... The documents I'm trying to compare are essentially two versions of the same content. Unfortunately, "Track Changes" has not been used. If file comparison not a built-in feature, what alternatives are out there for doing this?   It's unclear to me exactly how secure Remote Desktop access from OSX to a Windows Server 2003 machine is. Is the communication encrypted by default? What level of encryption? Are there best practices for making this as secure as possible? I found http://www.mobydisk.com/techres/securing_remote_desktop.html but it's unclear how much of that is still relevant for current versions of RDP and Windows Server. I know I can tunnel RDP over ssh, but is that overkill or redundant? Thanks...

• Why can't mplayer/libdvdcss/whatever play my DVDs?

  To put it bluntly, mplayer is unable to correctly play video DVDs. It seems to correctly find the title and everything, but the picture is broken or not displayed at all, with messages like: a52: CRC check failed! a52: error at resampling [mpeg1video @ 0xa8d840]sequence header damaged [mpeg1video @ 0xa8d840]Missing picture start code Now, this all is on amd64 Gentoo Linux system. I believe the problem is not in mplayer itself, since the playback also breaks in VLC or when i copy the VOBs via vobcopy and try to play them afterwards. I use libdvdcss-1.2.10 and libdvdread-4.1.3_p1168 (current stable in Gentoo), and tried previous versions of both libs, but it didn't change a thing. The DVDs I have tried play fine in regular DVD player or on a Windows laptop. I remember the playback used to work about a year ago and I don't know what to try next. Any hints would be welcome.

• Upgrade a legacy, expired RHEL 3.4.6 server to modern Centos/Scientific Linux

  I have a machine running a legacy J2EE app. The code is not Maven-ized and it works with pretty old Java and Postgres versions. I have converted it to a VM in ESXI and I'd like to try to upgrade it to a modern, binary-compatible version of RHEL (Centos or Scientific LInux) and see if things would still work. Where should I start? Am I being too optimistic with this one? It's more of an experiment and I'm not doing it on a production machine. • iptables: built-in INPUT chain in nat table?

  I have a Gentoo Linux system running linux 2.6.38-rc8. I also have a machine running Ubuntu with linux 2.6.35-27. I also have a virtual machine running Debian Unstable with linux 2.6.37-2. On the Gentoo and Debian systems I have an INPUT chain built into my nat table in addition to PREROUTING, OUTPUT, and POSTROUTING. On Ubuntu, I only have PREROUTING, OUTPUT, and POSTROUTING. I am able to use this INPUT chain to use SNAT to modify the source of a packet that is destined to the local machine (imagine simulating an incoming spoofed IP to a local application or just to test a virtual host configuration). This is possible with 2 firewall rules on Gentoo and Debian but seemingly not so on Ubuntu. I looked around for documentation on changes to the SNAT target and the INPUT chain of the nat table and I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know if this is a configuration issue or is it something that was just added in more recent versions of linux?

• How do I remove the Refresh button from the Address toolbar?

  I like being able to run commands straight from my Task Bar. So, I've enabled the Address toolbar on my new Windows 7 system - just like I had on my old XP system. However, the bar seems to have a mandatory minimum length (I've posted a separate question about that) that's a bit longer than I'd prefer. Additionally, a bit more horizontal space is consumed by a Refresh button at the end of it. This Refresh button appears similar to the Go button that used to show by default in older versions. That button was easily removed by changing a registry value that doesn't seem to exist in Windows 7. Is there a similar registry hack I can use to remove the new Refresh button?

• Intel VTune Performance Analyser 9.1 not working on Win 7 64

  Got the 32bit and 64 bit versions of the Intel VTune Performance Analyser. I installed the 64bit version (I think the installed was the "EMT" one) and when I go to create a new project, upon clicking the button to select an executable to profile, no file dialog popup shows. I got an old laptop and installed the 32bit on to Windows XP and it works fine. Regarding the 64 bit version, I did try changing the compatability to XP SP3 but it still didnt work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

  I just joined a small computer lab which basically uses all Windows boxes and a few Windows Sever 2003. Coming from a *nix background I am missing all the nice tools that we have for diagnosis and troubleshooting. My question is what are the safe, free (not terribly concerned if it is like beer or freedom -both acceptable) tools out there that Windows system admins use for their day to day troubleshooting (network, applications, servers etc). I am aware of the tools that come with Windows (and their limited capabilites) - so my query is with what do you fill in your arsenal? (may be a list of win versions of tools that come in standard linux distros)

• Is it really necessary to call /bin/sync twice before an unmanaged power-off?

  Hi all, My company sells an "embedded device" which is implemented as a headless Linux box with ext4 on an internal SSD. Some of our users have a habit of doing a "save current settings" on this box, and then cutting power to the unit as soon as the unit reports that the save completed (ie two seconds later). This was causing occasional corruption of the saved files, as the data wouldn't always get flushed to the SSD before the power went out. So I tweaked my software to run /bin/sync immediately after writing the file (after closing the file handle but before notifying the user that the save completed). This appears to fix the issue, but my coworker says that one call to /bin/sync isn't sufficient, and that to be really safe I ought to run /bin/sync twice in a row. That sounds like paranoia to me... Perhaps a habit from earlier versions of Linux or unix whose sync utility didn't work reliably. Does his advice have merit, or should one call to /bin/sync suffice?

• Is it possible to have non-English regional settings with English day/month names?

  I live in Estonia where most regional settings (number, currency and date formats) differ from those used in English-speaking countries. For instance, decimal symbol is comma, thousands separator is space, date format is day-month-year, etc. However, if I set my regional settings to Estonian, then day and month names are also shown in Estonian everywhere: This is slightly annoying since the language used for the rest of Windows is English and I'd like the day and month names to be consistent with it. Is this possible while still keeping the local regional settings? One workaround I've tried is to set regional settings to, say, English (UK) and then customise them to match Estonian settings, but that messes up alphabetic sorting - accented letters like "ö" and "ä" are no longer distinguished from their non-accented versions, and "z" is sorted as last rather than at its correct position in the Estonian alphabet (between "s" and "t"). OS is Windows 7 Professional, in case that matters. Edit: alternatively, if there's no built-in way to accomplish what I want, is it possible to create a custom set of regional settings (like one can create custom keyboard layouts)?

Would you like to suggest any software which can carry out compression so that I can reduce the size and send it via email, and decompress it at the other end .. opensource or freeware are more preferred .. paid-versions are appreciated too Edit: I am seeking an alternative software for winrar and 7-zip which is more efficient in compressing .. but still not losing any data ..

• How much RAM on a windows VPS (2003, 2008, 2008R2)

  Right now I'm running Windows Server 2003 on a VPS with 640mb RAM and it works fine. I would like to upgrade OS to Windows Web Server 2008 or Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I understand that it is difficult to say how much RAM is needed, but can you make a comparison between 2003 and the two new 2008 versions? RAM on VPS is by far the most expensive item, so I wonder if I can get similar performances with 1GB and 2008 or 2008R2 compared to 640MB and 2003. Basically I run IIS, SQL Server and MailEnable.

• HP ML150 G6 upgrading RAM/CPU beyond specs?

  I am being told that some limits on some HP servers can be crossed. Do any of you have any experience with that? A ML150/G6 is limited to 48GB RAM but I have been talking to a German company that guaranties me that this server will be able to be upgraded to 384GB RAM (using 32GB memory modules and 2 CPUs) http://www.compuram.de/en/memory,HP+%28-Compaq%29,Server,Proliant,ML150+G6.htm Can this really be true? The server that I have is using E5504 CPUs but will I be able to upgrade to any CPU that is using a LGA1366 socket? • ATI Radeon Drivers works with which linux distribution and version?

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. Almost every new linux distribution seems to have an issue with it, when i install the drivers. Working without utilizing the graphics card leaves me so unproductive. So i made a plan to use older versions of linux, any distribution suitable as a desktop distribution. UPDATE: The kind of problems that i am facing are, 1) After installing drivers the system boots and hangs, 2) There are unusual lines over the screen 3) After upgrade system doesn't start properly(hangs the usual old way) The kind of answers i am looking for is, distribution X(the newer the version the better) doesn't have the above problem after installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card.   What is the easiest way to setup an PXE server (i.e. a DHCP server + TFTP server) on MacOSX? Is there maybe some easy-to-use tool which just comes with both servers builtin? I have done that in the past but I remember that it took me several hours of editing some config files of tftpd (I think) and different versions of dhcpd, many trials and errors until I got it working (mostly). Now I have a fresh MacOSX installation and I want to avoid any complicated setup.

• Getting iTunes to play third party AAC files

  I have a library filled with some old MP3 files and I'm in the process of changing them all to AAC for the better sound quality. Obviously I can't just create AAC versions of the files I already have because they would sound worse (lossy compression to converted to more lossy compression), so I'm going to their source and downloading them in a lossless form and using a third party to make them into AAC. Apparently iTunes will not handle AAC files that aren't made with iTunes. Is there a way around this? I've looked at third party programs and would be willing to use them, but since they all require the iTunes/iPod/iEverything driver, I don't know if they would still prevent my files or not. Also before you jump on my back about pirating, these files are from old CDs that I lost years ago. I paid for them. Thanks.

• Run non-interactive script in single user mode

  Is it possible to run a "startup" script when booting into single user mode? I need to be able to boot into single user mode, run my script, then reboot into multiuser mode without any human interaction. I've done a bunch of research and can't find anything that is clear on the topic, although of course I could replace something else that does run with a wrapper that also launches my script, but I'd prefer to do it in some official way. Ideally, the solution will work in FreeBSD 6 and up, but I'm willing to accept only new versions if it just doesn't exist in the older revs.

• NAT Error Message - Usage limit exceeded

  Trying to configure a port to use for Vuze. Using the NAT/server port test, I was getting a message saying the connection timed out, the port was probably closed. I went back and made sure to open the specific port on my router, firewall, etc, but now I'm getting "NAT Error - Usage limit exceeded (173.32.41.24:0). I'm on a mac pro running leopard, trial versions of intego netbarrier and virusbarrier. Network utilities and netbarrier both claim the port is open. I've tested a bunch of other ports, but all give the same message.

• Cannot Login To phpMyAdmin

  I'm running a simple LAMP server at home from which I host a personal blog. The server is running Arch Linux, with the latest-and-greatest versions of Apache, MySQL, and PHP. In order to easily maintain the databases, I installed phpMyAdmin. However, I cannot login. If I were to SSH into the server and run mysql -u <user> -p <password>, no errors show up and I'm immediately placed into the MySQL prompt. No problem. However, when I try to log in with phpMyAdmin, using those exact same credentials, nothing happens. No errors, no nothing, I'm just redirected back to the login page. Did I do something wrong? • Audio splitting and noise removal on Windows

  My mother has about 100 hours of audio in a mix of MP3 and WAV files, the digitized versions of her vinyl records. Each file contains about 5 songs with a few seconds of (noisy) pause between them. My mother needs software for Windows XP with which she can listen to the files, find the gaps manually, split the files at the gaps found, reduce noise on each song, and export the songs to individual MP3 files. My mother has very limited software user skills and affinity, and she doesn't speak English. The simpler the software, the better for her, even if noise reduction is worse than with a more sophisticated, but more complicated software. I'd prefer free software, freeware or shareware (which can do all above). Please recommend something much simpler than Audacity. The software should guide the user through the process, always showing the next few available steps, and being intuitive in the sense that there are only a few allowed actions and it's obvious what they are and how to activate them. Which software would you recommend?
