• Versioning files in Windows XP

  I would like to set up an archive folder in Windows XP that would allow me to drop several different versions of the same file, and have it store each version. I would envision this to work similar to the recycle bin, where you can drop the same file 10 times and it stores each version. Anybody know how I can do this? Thanks! Edit: Using a Version Control System is complete overkill for this situation. I may just write a script that appends a date/time stamp to the file when added to the folder.

• DAW with realtime pitchshifting

  I'm very happy with Renoise but it has a problem, it can't do realtime pitchshifting. For example, consider a breakbreat which I want to trigger at different pitches sometimes. Like I keep 'Q' pressed for a 'C' pitch, but then I press 'B' for a lower pitch. In Renoise the resulting beat is not only lower pitch, but also longer/slower. I want it to be the same speed, just a different pitch. I've been doing this externally in Audacity, then keeping a couple of different pitched versions in Renoise but that's tedious. Or consider a melodic segment snipped from a song into a sample. Say I want to play it simultaneously in its real pitch and 5 semitones higher, so it forms a sort of chord effect. Again, no easy way to do this in renoise. Is there a DAW app that does that kind of thing? I've heard of ableton live, it has 'live' in the name so maybe it can do it?

• Gentoo+urxvt+terminus: How do I change font version?

  In my Debian installation I can type extended ASCII characters such as åäö by default using the terminus font, however in Gentoo I can't get it to work so far. Nothing happens when I hit those keys, like in this thread: Missing glyphs in Terminus font, how to setup a fallback font ? But in this case I know terminus supports those characters in at least some of its versions, since it's works in Debian. So what I want is to find out how to see and choose which of the many different terminus font files is being used. I set the font in the same way on both Debian and Gentoo, using URxvt*font: xft:terminus:size=xx in .Xdefaults. Both systems use en_US.UTF-8 as default locale.

• Workgroup connection: You may not have permission

  I have two Windows XP computers connected through an Ad-Hoc network, computer A creates the network and B connects to it. Both computers are on the Mshome network and have file and printer sharing enabled, and they can ping one another through the adhoc network. The result is that computer A can see computer B, but B cannot see A in the workgroup. But when A tries to access B I get a "you might not have permission to access" error telling me to contact the administrator. I tries to google the error, but most posts talk about problems connecting different versions of Windows to each other. I tried turning off the firewalls on both machines and checking if the required services are running. Nothing helped. Please excuse my ignorance on Windows networking, I haven't used Windows in around 10 years.

  What are some good books or resources for learning automate virtual PCs on Windows DataCenter? I want to be able to build VPCs with both automated installs and from images, preferably via powershell. I would like to be able to setup an IIS environment for automated testing, and configure end user installs of different versions of Windows. I am not interested in corpnet type scenarios (active directory, domains, etc) so much for now. I'm comfortable with powershell and programming in general. I haven't yet installed Windows DataCenter, maybe once I install it will be clear enough. But looking for resources on how to managed virtual PCs programmatically I haven't found anything.

• How can Yum tell me the version of depencencies?

  I've installed a package with Yum (Varnish 3.0.2). However, a feature I need has been removed so I need to roll back. According to the documentation, the feature was removed in 3.0-Beta, so I wanted to revert to the latest version prior to that. (This is 2.1.5) This is installed now, but there were three RPMs to install for it (from http://users.linpro.no/ingvar/varnish/2.1.5/2.1.5-1/el5/x86_64/). After some faffing about with missing dependencies these got installed. However, the feature I need is still not there. I'm wondering if one of the dependencies is actually from a newer build. Do you know how I can see the versions of all the dependencies of a Yum installed package?

• Equalizer for Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop (Windows 7) (has Realtek sound)

  Hi, I've been trying to find a way to have a real equalizer for my Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop. I don't know much about computers but the guys in the store seem to know less than I do! From what I've been able to glean through friends, Windows 7 no longer supports a real equalizer function with Realtek, and the result is a fake "equalizer" that does nothing. I have hearing issues so not being able properly adjust the higher frequencies is causing me physical pain and ringing in my ears. I've tried to decipher the threads I find online but am quite confused by them. Basically I need an equalizer that will work with Windows 7 (with everything, internet, skype, music, etc). The current drivers offered by Realtek do nothing except make the sound inaudible. The one that may possibly work and provide an actual equalizer is a few versions back and can't be found anywhere. Thanks! And sorry if this is a duplicate question but I am confused a bit by the threads online.

• I think I disabled IE8's compatibility view

  I have an install of IE8 that doesn't have the compatibility view button next to the url bar. I vaguely remember during install that there was a question about whether it was to be available or not, I may have clicked no. Or maybe that was a dream. There are no options that I can see about it being available or not. Anyone know how to enable it? I'm about to try re-install but I'm hoping I can fix it without re-installing. • Clicking on a link in Chrome opens up Notepad

  I'm currently using Chrome 21.0.1180.89 on Windows 7, but I have noticed this behavior in other versions before. Probably about one time in a hundred, I will click on a link on a website and an instance of Notepad will open up with a blank page rather than the browser going to the link. To my knowledge, I have no malware or viruses on the machine that could be causing this. It's a minor annoyance, so I'm not very concerned about it, but I'm wondering if there could be a MIME type that's set wrong by default in the browser?

• Multi-monitor resolution and position settings lost after reboot

  I've had two 1280x1024 monitors running for years on an nVidia 8800GT card with no problems. I've now replaced one monitor with a new 2560x1440 one. The card seems to support both fine, however every time I reboot the resolutions and monitor positions revert to the old settings. I've tried upgrading, downgrading, stripping out and reinstalling many versions of the nvidia drivers to no avail. Logging in as another user doesn't help - same problem. Booting into another another OS (Win7 64) works OK, so it is just this OS installation. During boot up everything looks fine (ie native 2450x1440 res) until the nVidia control panel or something is loaded which flips it back into the old mode. I have no old saved nvidia profiles. I can't find anything in the registry relating to these old settings. Its driving me crazy having to set resolutions and realign monitors on every reboot! Can anybody help?

• Can I move a copy of Windows 7 from one machine to another?

  This is a pretty basic question sorry but I've looked in the 'related questions' and couldn't find an answer. When Windows 7 came out I bought a copy of Home Premium, the retail box with both 32 and 64 bit versions, to install via Boot Camp on my macbook. I've just got a retail (32 and 64 bit) copy of Windows 7 Ultimate that I'd like to install instead-of/over the Home Premium version and it struck me that I should, at least in principal be able to install the Home Premium version on my son's machine - is this the case and if so is there anything I should do first or once they're installed to let MS know I'm being a good guy about this? Sorry it's such a dim question but I'm a serverfault guy really and know very little about Windows. Thanks.

• How do I fully clear Firefox's cache of CSS and JS files?

  I work on a website at my work. The issue is that if I visit the site, which uses the cached versions of the CSS and JS files, and then upload an updated copy of a CSS/JS file, Firefox will still use the cached version. I can go to 'Tools-Clear Recent History' and clear the Cache of "Everything" and it still uses the cached version of the files. It will eventually updated and use the new files, but it can takes hours for this change to occur. So, how do I completely clear Firefox's cache of these files?

• How can I move a window that cannot be moved by mouse?

  I have downloaded a version of Finale Notepad on Windows 7. When I first used it it functioned perfectly. Every time I opened it a popup asking me about downloading a different version would show up that I could just click out of. When the pop up appeared I was unable to quit out of the window or move it at all, but it posed no issue. Apparently, though, the last time I quit out of the program, the screen must have been dragged down below my taskbar. Now, I am unable to quit out of the popup when I reopen the program, meaning I can't access it at all. I tried restarting my computer, uninstalling the program, downloading different versions of the program, and even using alternate methods of moving it, such as Alt+Tab, but nothing works.

  I have some modifications I want to make WITHOUT installing extensions. eg: max width of tab and height of menu, In previous versions you could have it done via: about:config ->browser.tabs.tab.maxWidth Since FF4 it should be done with CSS. Now I searched the default theme: C:\Users\wetcat\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\feriz.default and C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox In the second I could find the extension - theme but without any CSS. In the AppData I couldn't find any CSS or theme folder. WHERE is the file to create or alter the CSS?? I'm using Firefox 11.

I have found some information regarding the existence of a "Windows 8 pro system builder" which will allow clean installs in blank disks without any pre-requisites for prior Windows versions, but all information is very vague and without references.   I was attempting to install Visual Studio 2012 Express Version on windows 7, but got the following error. The error talks about some Interop Assem, which I believe is related to Microsoft Office. I tried to install the Interop Assem, but it seems that they cannot be installed for Starter Versions of the Microsoft Office. So, how do I go about installing Visual Studio 2012 on my Windows 7 machine, without full version of Microsoft Office installed, Or the error is related to something else. • Weblogic Class-Path Dependencies EAR

  I am deploying an EAR in a WebLogic node with many jars defined in the bootstrap (startWeblogicServer.bat) class-path. The problem is that my ear and the bootstrap contain different versions of the same jars, not only that but certain jars contain extracted third party libraries which also differ in version from the WebLogic bootstrap jars causing all kinds of classpath errors. I know you can set preferred jars in the EAR application xml but, this can be very tedious to resolve with regards to jars which include extracted third party libraries in terms of understanding all the dependencies.. Is there a correct approach that i need to be taking here? Am i thinking about this in the wrong way? Any help would be greatly appreciated! So far prefer-web-inf-classes has been recommended but wont work because i'm not deploying a WAR, also prefer-application-packages is what we are currently using but still has the issue described above... Anymore advice out there?? Thanks!

• How to batch rename files based on file header/metadata in Windows?

  I have a directory full of randomly named files of different types, all with no file extensions. Most are images, with some videos, and some plaintext. I've used one of the Windows versions of file to confirm the files can all be identified by their headers/metadata, but would like to automate the naming as there are roughly 2400 files. I don't care so much about the filename as much as just having the appropriate extension for it's type. Is anyone aware of a program or script that can do this?

• OS Isolation: Virtualization or Dual-Boot Duplication, a General How To?

  I want to isolate my windows 7 operating system and I have looked into virtualization. This should work with Linux, however, I do want to still have a way to run windows 7 securely, but without significant performance loss, thus eliminating virtualization for that. I know that you can dual boot because I currently do so with my XP/Linux system. Is there a way that I can duplicate my windows 7 system so I can select one at bootup? This way I can ensure that each OS is isolated and not worry about performance loss. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a solid method for OS duplication?! Is this even possible or must I buy two versions of win7 and somehow install them separately? Any information regarding this would be helpful, thanks! Essentially I want, Two instances of win7 (not necessarily simultaneously running) Each are isolated from one another so that a security breach in one doesn't affect the other. • setreg.exe for Windows 7

  I want to use setreg.exe (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387700(VS.85).aspx) to disable the certificate revocation check. However, it's based on an older version of .NET than what I have. Microsoft says it's shipped with the older .net SDK, and when I download that, try to install, it says something like 'can't install SDK without .net 1.1'. In the article linked it says for newer versions I should use SignTool, but SignTool does not appear to have the function I need . Is it possible to either - a) find a tool that can perform the function I need that doesn't need me to install the older .NET b) get setreg.exe without downloading the SDK or do I need to install the older .NET on my machine? And if the latter is the case, what do I need to do to install an older .NET? Will it overwrite my current .NET? Thanks,

• Virtualise Excel in a browser

  Is it possible to give users access to a virtualised instance of Excel - I don't want to give them access to a full OS (although this will clearly be running in the background, all they can access is Excel - they don't even see any other screens)? Secondly, if it is possible, is it possible to do within a browser? Edit I am building a system which is designed to test candidates skills in Excel and for this reason needs to use the full desktop version and not a web app. I don't want to have to ensure Excel is installed on the client machine as there will be issues around differing versions and security as the workbook(s) that are used in the test use VBA extensively to customise and mark the exercises. Ideally my web app would be able to open a session to the server which then just puts the user into an instance of Excel without ever seeing a desktop. I would also need to be able to pass in command line parameters in order to define which workbook to open and also pass in a unique token to identify the user

• Excel file has disappeared from sharepoint document library

  Two days ago an excel came up missing from a document library. This document library only had this file and nows it's gone. When I go to All Site Content-Document Librarys it shows that there is still one file in the library. Seems like there is something screwy. Is there anything I can do to get this item to reappear?   Windows 8's Blue Screen of Death is different from the previous Windows versions' one: In order to find out what caused the problem you need to write down or remember the search term it presents you with. The two search terms I have seen suggested so far are SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. Both of them are quite generic terms. While it’s nice not to have to look at a blue screen full of text, the previous BSoD was more informative than the Windows 8 BSoD, since it contained a detailed error code (information for diagnostic purposes that was collected as the operating system performed a bug check), which could get you closer to tracking down the root of the problem. How can I get more information about the error Windows 8 has encountered, in order to track down the root of the problem?

• How do I stop Mac OS X Snow Leopard from losing the keyboard shortcuts I create in System Preferences?

  I can't explain it. In OS X 10.6.6 (but also in previous versions; nothing to do w/ latest update), I create some keyboard shortcuts both for individual applications and for "all applications." I use them for a while. Later, sometimes after restart sometimes not, they're gone. Where'd they go?!?! (More importantly, how do I make them stop disappearing? Less ideal solution: how do I back them up and quickly restore them?) Thanks!

• I suspect that my HDD is causing hardlocks, as all other components have been replaced. How can I check this theory and solve the potential cause?

  I have had this problem over quite a while now, thorough multiple Linux kernel versions and distributions, as well as replacement of all components, aside from my main HDD - RAM, GPU(twice), mother board, CPU, power supply. What happens is, at one point during the operation of the PC, it will hardlock - everything stops working, external HDD is not shut down correctly and continues to spin until I plug it out and in, there are no system/kernel logs of any kind, and no otherwise nothing that would suggest a cause. Another reason for my suspicion is that the failures happen almost exclusively during HDD read/write activity - shutdown(happens nearly 1/3 of the time so far, it's only been few days though), launching programs, and once during operation of apt. I hope the post is descriptive enough, if you need any additional info, ask(and tell me how to prepare/obtain it), and I will provide. If I'm wrong, point me in the right direction.
